A Nightmare?
The scene was misty and dark, a sinister howl rolled through the countryside. There was a beautiful woman with long flowing dark hair and piercing light brown eyes and a very tall strong-featured man with long silver hair and golden eyes, standing near, but reaching out for each other. There was distress shrouding them, among the mist a voice breaks through. The beautiful woman stared longingly at her beloved with tears in her eyes, and as she was being pulled farther away by an unseen force, she spoke,
“Goodbye my Lord Sesshomaru, my love.”
Sesshomaru suddenly awakens in a cold sweat, and looks around the now dead fire pit to see his two companions who were sleeping peacefully. He calmed his racing heart. As he thought to himself.
“How could such an image cause so much pain in my soul, and haunt my dreams.” He relit the fire and stared at his female companion. He had known Rin since she was a child. He resurrected her, when bandits had attacked her village. He saved her life with his sword Tensenga, a sword that was forged to bring back the dead. He did so because she had helped nurse him back to health after a battle left him wounded. Since the young mortal was alone he allowed her to travel with him and his servant Jakken. Now she had blossomed in to a young woman, whom has been described breathtakingly beautiful. To Sesshomaru, whom had distaste for all mortals, did find her easy on the eyes. She has also grown on him over the last 10 years; he delighted in her presence and found her antics amusing.
He had been thinking for sometime that he should let Rin settle. Was that the source of his nightmare? He shrugged that thought off “No” he thought to himself. He had expressed his need to rid himself of Rin to his faithful servant Jakken, a small older green org-ish demon. Sesshomaru wasn’t sure if he was ready to have his young ward leave his side, but understood that it had to be done and sooner than later. Sesshomaru knew that Rin would eventually want to mate and start a family, and he knew that she would have to leave before than. So she could find someone to settle with, but to Sesshomaru no one could ever be good enough for his ward. He thought again to his nightmare and wondered if he had feelings for her, paternal or even more. He shrugged off that thought as well, “No” he thought silently, “ I have no place in my heart for love or compassion.”
The woman that Sesshomaru had been staring at, stirred and awoken. “Is…there something wrong…my Lord” she asked sleepily, as she stretched, sat up and warmed herself by the newly lit fire.
“No, there’s nothing wrong. I apologize if I woke you. But you should rest, you know that I don’t need much rest.” He said
“Yes, I know.” She said lowering her glance at her lord. “Lord Sesshomaru, I have had some troubling thoughts recently. Can I ask you a question?”
Rin wrapped herself in her blanket and strolled over toward Sesshomaru and sat next to him.
Unsure of why she was troubled he asked, “What is it Rin, what has you troubled?”
“I know that you wish me to find a village, a place that I can make a home in, but would you considered letting me stay with you on your journeys? I have no family except you and Jakken. I cannot see myself without you in my life.”
“But don’t you wish to find a mate and start a family of your own?” He thought to himself, why did he feel the need to comfort her, he continued, “If so you must leave my side and start your life.” He said with a small unfamiliar twang of hurt in his heart. “But why?” He thought. “She was just another mortal, why did it matter whether she left or not?”
There was a small silence from Rin, trying to find the right words to respond to her lord. Sesshomaru saw her eyes flicker with thought. Then she started to tear up. He thought to himself, “did I say something wrong?”
“I have thought about a family and finding a mate, as you have put it. But I have always secretly hoped it would be with… you.” She paused to gage his expression, she noticed that her lord was in a small state of shock by her words in his eyes and was that pain? She continued, “Over the years I have embraced you as a father figure and a protector. But I have grown to notice that I still want you as my protector, but I also wish for more.”
Sesshomaru knew that she would eventually fall in love with him, which was why he had asked her to find a village, so she could find mortal man to be with. He couldn’t do that; he couldn’t end up like his father.
“Rin, you don’t want that. Trust me, you have experienced what my life consists of and I don’t feel that is the place for a mortal woman to spend her life like. I cannot always protect you, you need to settle somewhere.”
Rin stung by his words, left his side and back to her spot on the other side of the fire pit. She pulled her blanket over herself and turned her back to her lord with tears stinging her eyes. She knew what she wanted and it was Sesshomaru. She just needed to figure out how melt his tough exterior and enter his heart.
