No one heard it, the bone chilling wail nor the blood curdling roar. Had everyone suddenly become deaf, unable to hear the final cry of help from the poor victim? No one saw it, the bloody corpse nor the frightening creature that drank the blood like nectar. Also, no one smelt the beginnings of decay. Had everyone suddenly become hardened; would another death affect anyone as it used to?
The beast, on the other hand, could smell, hear, and see many other potential victims. It had no sense of remorse, no sense of fear; it ran simply on instinct keeping it from holding back. Unlike the humans it feasted on. That is what made them such an easy catch. It was pathetic that an unintelligent beast could bring down a human, who should have been able to think of how to escape. Instead they scream.
Only when the sun shone down on the decaying body would it be discovered. Questions would arise, wondering just how the poor victim was killed. However the case would not be solved. They could claim it as the body being mangled beyond recognition, but fear of the unknown could be the true reason. For this was the pity of mankind.
The curiosity of humans is great, sometimes it is their downfall. When something sparks that sense of curiosity there is a nagging need to sate it; sometimes a human doesn’t know when to leave the unknown be. That is what sometimes leads them to their imminent death.
Humans believed themselves to be the better of all species for they had yet to run across such a breed that surpassed them. Animals were below them for they could not comprehend the same way they do and were reduced to gut instinct. However, they would one day find they were simply cattle to something greater. Only a few among them could prove worth out of the millions from which they were bred, and only one would lead them.
She thundered down the stairs, pulling on her shoes as she went. The only thing running through her mind was to get out the door to ensure she would not be late. She was just barely out the door when her name was called. She spun around, her expression showing mild surprise. Her mother simply smiled as she held up her daughters yellow backpack, it had been forgotten in her rush.
“I think you’ll be needing this dear,” she said as she handed the needed item to her daughter.
“Thanks mom.”
“Remember Kagome, this is a new school with new people. Please, try to make new friends. Okay dear?” Worry shone in her mother’s eyes, she only wanted what was best for her.
“Hai, I’ll…try,” Kagome nodded. She couldn’t promise anything though, nor did she. “I’ll see you after school!” She smiled brightly before rushing off, this time with her bag on her back. Her fingers dug into the straps as she dodged everyone for fear of touching them; not once did she make contact with them as she dodged in, what could be considered, a graceful weave.
However, as the school came into view, she nearly ran into a boy clad in a green school uniform. She quickly dodged, but managed to trip and wound up sprawled on the ground. She groaned a bit as her backside protested to the hard landing. The young man had seen her ungraceful fall and was nearing her, probably to check if she were alright. Though, as she checked her watch, she’d have to deny him that. She was going to be late, the one thing she was trying to avoid.
“Sorry!” She called out to the boy as she scrambled to her feet and began running again. He watched after her for a moment with a somewhat confused expression before shrugging it off.
It figured, it was her first day and nothing was quite going right. Arriving at the school had been a whole new experience; almost the entire student body was outside chatting with their friends. Not only was getting into the school fun, but finding the office had been an absolute joy ride. Her mood wasn’t the best at the moment, all she wanted to do was get to class, sit down, and forget her morning mishaps.
Lucky for her, she was able to find her classroom without a problem. Though dodging the crowds to get into her class room had been another story. She hated it, hated it with a passion. She had to avoid contact with every living person, including her family! But now was not the time to dwell on such a thing, she would have to do so later.
Taking her mind away from her current thoughts she took a seat in the uncomfortably hard chairs the school funding provided and pulled out her materials.
As she prepared to take notes, the rest of the class began to file in slowly. Much to her dismay she was surrounded on all sides causing her exit to be hindered by possible contact. But once again she had no time to dwell on this seeing as how the teacher was begging the class.
"Hello class, we will be starting a new chapter today, and P.E. will be held at the pool. Yes I know its cold, but thats life. And your home economics teacher is out sick so you will be having a substitute. Now open your text books to page 234 so we can begin."
Kagome nearly sighed, this was the same as her old school, except the uniforms were navy blue and gold, and the skirts were longer.
Much to her relief things were going smoothly so far, but little did she know her clumsy feet and bad luck were about to turn this day into a disaster.
As she entered the girls locker room, whispers filled her ears. Most about boys and things every teenage girl had circulating in her mind.
But she ignored this, instead favoring to change as quick as possible. In her haste she nearly bumped a passing girl, but her quick reflexes fond her against the lockers. Soon all eyes were on her in inquiry, but she just smiled nervously.
"I-I slipped, sorry." She hastily made a plausible excuse. After attention was off herself she grabbed her towel and water shoes and ran for the door.
When safely out the door, she slowed her pace to a walk. She disliked school very much, it just provided too much stress. It was a routine, she went to school for a few months and everything went dandy until someone decides they want to touch her in some way or form, and then the trouble unleashes.
She was an almost normal girl, if it weren't for her inability to make any contact with living things. Whenever she did (without some sort of barrier) she passed out or began coughing up lots of blood.
She never knew why.
She was pulled out of her thoughts by a loud whistle. The couch was lining up the students for groups. She was in group 'A' which was the first group to hit the water. They were diving, meaning they had to practice performing stunts in mid air. She hated it, she was ungraceful and unlucky! she was sure to crack her head open!
Closing her eyes she took a large breath before she steeled herself for what was to come.
The first of their group stepped onto the diving board and performed a backwards somersault. This continued until she was up. Her palms were already slick with sweat and she was shaking like a leaf.
Bouncing lightly on the board, she performed a somersault trying to mimic the first performer. She succeeded, but she swore she would never do such again.
After a hour it was time to head to the last class, Home Ec. She showered and dressed in record time, leaving the rest of the class lagging behind as she sped toward Home Ec.
She was good at cooking, but that wasn't the reason she like it. It was usually an opted course but it was apparently required here, and that was fine with her.
She knew her way around a kitchen, her mother worked constantly leaving her brother and her to fend for themselves. She wasn't a master chef, but she made tasty meals.
As she stepped into the class the smells hit her in immense waves leaving her in a peaceful state.
"Everyone take your stations!" The substitute shouted over the scrapping stools and chatter. She personally took a seat in the far back. "Alright class! Today since I am a substitute I would like it if you each worked on one dish with your group. I will be assigning you your projects by way of lotto! now come up and get a slip."
She now didn't like this so much anymore, this was a potential danger, so she opted to go last. For now she put on the smock and apron and tied her hair back messily.
When she was done everyone, but her was assigned a dish. She went up and got the slip assigning her to her work.
Back at her station she opened the crumpled piece of paper revealing the words 'egg drop soup'.
Grabbing the text book she began to read the ingredients.
It was going to be her first, but she was having fun.
Finally she completed the soup and was left with time on her hands so she sat down and set her dish back in the oven to keep warm. Her peace was soon interrupted by the teacher.
"Instead of sitting and doing nothing why don't you go see if some of your class mates need help?" Kagome was nodded, but she was reluctant to do so.
She made her way to a group of three who were trying to restart the stove fire, but not getting anywhere. She smiled and offered a hand. They couldn't get the switch to move from off to on.
She tried, but the switch wouldn't budge, so she tried harder and it finally let lose. But what happened made her regret finally getting the damnable thing to move.
A huge flame exploded from the stove causing many startled screams. She quickly covered her face in time, but her hands became burned and hair, slightly singed.
It happened so fast it didn't register fully in her brain. She stared unblinkingly at her appendages.
Her hands were red and blistering, blood rushed down her palms. The pain only numbly registered in her mind, but she ignored her bodies signals and protests. She moved her fingers slightly sending a rush of pain up her arms. Her bad luck just never seemed to leave. Just as someone reached to touch her she ducked away.
That was the last thing she needed. "I am fine." She hastily said avoiding the hands of the teacher.
"You aren't fine! you took the brunt of the blow! Your hands have third degree burns!" The teacher was hysterical as she spoke stating her lack of accidents.
"I-I'll just go to the nurse." She said backing further away from the approaching teacher.
"No we need..." Kagome left before she could finish. She didn't want this! Running down the halls she made her way out of the building and into the open where they wouldn't be able to fallow her.
Well so much for having a good day at her new school.
