Chapter one: Firelight

The fire grew dim, casting a dim light across Sango’s sleeping form. InuYasha watched her sleep with a content smile on his face. His ears twitched around, keeping alert to his surroundings and he sniffed the air every few minutes. They were relatively safe here in the forrest. InuYasha, Sango, and her demon cat Kilala had just slain a demon terrorizing a nearby town. Kagome had returned to her time for finals just before they left three days ago. It was odd without her around, but at the same time refreshing. InuYasha felt a little lonely, but his fights with Kagome were growing more frequent. He was glad for the quiet. Sango seemed to be enjoying the quiet too. Miroku had taken gone to visit his master, Miatsu, and shippou had gone with him. Naraku, Sesshomaru, and Kikyo had dissappeared. It was like a vacation to the three friends gathered around the fire. Kilala stirred in Sango’s arms and meweled at InuYasha.

“It’s nothing, just thinking.” He said to the demon quietly guessing what it had said. She cocked her head to the side and gave him an innocent look. “Come here.” He said, beckoning the fire cat over.

The small demon squeeked hapily and curled up in the hanyou’s lap. He pet the warm creature absentmindedly as he thought out loud. “I don’t get it Kilala. Ikeep trying to get closer to Kagome and it always breaks out into a fight.”

Kilala wimpered sympathetically. InuYasha scratched begind it’s ears earning a low purr from the cat. “Maybe things werent supposed to work out between me an her. Maybe she was right. Maybe it’s just because she looks like Kikyo.”

Sango stirred at InuYasha’s voice. She looked up at him with sleep filled eyes. InuYasha was suddenly captured by her eyes the depth of her dark hazel eyes portrayed wisdom far beyond her age. The staredown lasted a moment too long and InuYasha regained his ability to think. ‘what was that all about?’ he thought to himself.

Sango looked from his face, down to Kilala who he was still petting, back up to his face. She smiled brightly. “Aww…” she sat up. “That’s cute.” InuYasha and Kilala both cocked their heads in the same direction. Sango giggled at the confused looks from her companions.

“She’s sure warmed up to you since we first met hasn’t she.” InuYasha looked down to the fire cat as she nuzzled his hand. “I like her better when she’s not trying to bite me…” he said with a chuckle. Then his face grew very serious as his thoughts returned to their previous track.

Sango watched the firelight dance over his features. She had always thought that he looked sad and lonely, and now in the shadows, he looked even more so. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Nothing…” He said quickly, forcing his face back into it’s usual expression. His eyes told a different story, thought and Sango could see it. She crossed her arms. “It’s Kagome… isn’t it.”

InuYasha closed his eyes and made his bottled up look that he always made when someone else figured him out. “Keh…” he said under his breath.

“Shell be back before you know it.” she said trying to cheer him up. InuYasha shook his head. “It isn’t that…” he said hesitantly. “It’s… just… I don’t know about her.”

Sango’s full focus was now in the serious conversation. “What? I thought you two were practically together.” InuYahsa look at the ground. “I thought so too… but I think it would have happened by now if it was going to. And every time I try to tell her how I feel we end up fighting.” Sango frowned. “I’m sorry InuYasha.” She said softly, watching the usually bottled up emotions dance behind his amber eyes.

Sango crawled around the fire to sit next to InuYasha. “I can understand how you feel. I can’t stand how she treats you sometimes. She always acts like you’re trying to piss her off when you’re only trying to help.”

InuYasha didn’t know what to say. He and Sango hadn’t talked like this since she was faced with her brother. He knew he could trust Sango with anything. She was like a sister to him, and probably understood him better than anyone else. “I’m glad the others are gone for a time. It’s nice to just relax with you and Kilala, sister…”

“What? Sister?” Sango’s face was unreadable. You think of me as a sister?”

InuYasha sighed. “You and I, sango… we’ve been through a lot. You’re the only one I know who understands me sometimes. And I think I understand some of your problems as well. To tell you the truth, you’re more of a family to me than my real family.” He trailed off.

Sango practically tackled InuYasha in a tight hug. He didn’t know what to do for a few moments untill he felt sango crying into his chest. “Thank you Inu-Kun.” She said softly between sobs. InuYasha allowed himself to soften, confident that Sango wouldn’t tell the others that he was capible of compassion. He wrapped his arms around Sango and held her while she emptied herself of stored up emotiuon. He rocked her slowly and every now and then planted a reassuring kiss on the top ofher head. “everything will turn out right in the end, Sango. As long as this ragtag band of a family sticks together, we’ll all survive anything Naraku can throw at us.”

Sango lifted her head and looked up into InuYasha’s eyes. They were the same old Amber eyes that he always had, but they held understanding and compassion that InuYasha never outwardly showed. Sango realized the full profoundness of InuYasha’s opening up to her. She instantly realized that she had become much closer to her hanyou friend in that moment. “InuYasha…” her eyes teared up again.

InuYasha shushed her. “Both of our families are all but dead to us, Sango. My only living relative tries to kill me every time we meet, and yours is being used by Naraku.”

Sango flinched at the mension of Kohaku. “I’m sorry.” InuYasha said, seeing the shif in Sango’s mood at the mension of her brother. Sango shook her head. “it’s alright…” InuYasha could tell that it wasn’t. he uncrossed his legs and laid back, his head at Sango’s crossed legs.

“Sango, I’v been alive for 200 years. I spent the first hundred being Shuned by the entire world, save my mother. And then she died. Leaving my brother in charge of my father’s legacy. And leaving me alone to fend for myself. I spent the next fifty years teaching myself to conceal everything because it allowed me to survive. Then… “ he paused. Sango looked at him expectantly. “Then Kikyo happened. You already know that story” Sango nodded.

“Naraku tore you two apart and bound you for the next 50 years. Maraku made my innocen brother kill the hole village…” InuYasha nodded. “We both have our scars and know being alone more than having someone there for us…” InuYasha said softly into the fire. “That’s why I can be open with you, sister…”
