~Betrayal of Friendship~

Chapter 1 – Truth Revealed

She knew in her heart that what she was about to do was the best no matter what she had thought before, it took her almost two years of being gone before she realized what she had to do. Her heart sped up as she looked at the village from the road she could see Goshinboku, the large tree swaying off to the back of the village near the old well that was barely visible from where she stood. She looked back her faithful companion Kirara who stood fully formed slightly bigger than a horse; the fire cat had two bags saddled on her and a basket.

Sango looked ahead again and sighed softly “ok Kirara lets go…” she hesitated for the briefest of seconds before beginning to walk.

~

Kaede, the old miko still lived in the village and was nearing her Sixty-third birthday, she looked over with her one good eye and was the first to notice the demon slayer walking into the village.

She smiled gently ‘it seems that she finally came back, the others will be thrilled!’

Sango reached the old miko and smiled “Grandmother Kaede it’s been a long time” she addressed her old friend and came in for a hug.

The old miko returned it letting a small tear come to her eye “Ye have grown dear Sango, how I’ve missed ye…and the others too.”

She saw Sango’s smile fade slightly “well they are one of the reasons I returned.”

Kaede nodded “please come inside I’ll put on some tea.”

Sango turned to Kirara and grabbed the basket and let the fire cat shrug the bags down next to the hut, the cat then transformed into her smaller form and jumped onto her masters shoulder. Sango followed Kaede into her hut and sat the basket down before sitting next to it, Kaede started to move the embers of the old fire and add some more wood to start tea and lunch “so what have ye been doing? If ye don’t mind me asking…”

Sango sighed softly “well I would like to see the others before beginning my tale.”

Kaede noticed her smile falter again but nodded “well it’s almost noon they should be by for lunch soon.
~

Kagome stood slowly as she saw Miroku finish the last of his shrine duties “come on Miroku it’s almost lunch time.”

He nodded and bowed to the shrine before walking over to her “Shippo should be playing nearby I’ll get him and meet you at Kaede’s” he said.

Kagome nodded and ran towards the village as Miroku walked into the woods to find the young kitsune. He heard Shippo come running towards him and caught him as he jumped up

“Miroku” said Shippo happily

“Come on its time for lunch…”Began the monk but he was abruptly cut off by Kagome’s scream “AAAAaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!”

He started running to the village jumping down the shrine steps almost stumbling as he landed, he held Shippo tight as he neared Kaede’s and jumped through the door “What’s wrong!” he shouted before seeing Sango and stumbling to his knees “S-Sango!?” he breathed.

Sango’s eyes watered slightly as Kagome was hugging her as hard as the young miko could, she saw the disbelief and longing in Miroku’s eyes, she then grunted to Kagome “I-I can’t breathe…”

Kagome pulled back some “I can’t believe you’re really back!”

Miroku regained his composure and looked at Sango “why…why did you leave?”

She sighed and her smile all but faded “I’ll tell you all about it, but where is Inuyasha?” she asked noticing the gruff hanyou was nowhere in sight.

Everyone looked down and Kagome let go of Sango as Kaede cleared her throat “it’s seems my child that Inuyasha has left us, he fled the village about a year ago.”

Sango look at Kagome her self-proclaimed sister as the miko sniffled, Sango touched her shoulder “Kagome…why’d he leave!?”

She shook her head “truthfully Sango I don’t know but I wish I did…I wish I at least knew if he was alive or not…”

“Whaaaa!” came a cry and Shippo jumped off of Miroku and onto the basket.

“What was that?” he asked curiously as he poked at it with a small clawed finger.

Sango sighed and braced herself “the reason I had to leave you all…”

The all looked intently as Sango opened the top and pulled out a bundle of blankets and everyone gasped as the saw a small infant now in the demon slayer’s arms. Miroku’s eyes went wide “but, but…. But I…you and I…”

She nodded “yes I’m sorry Miroku, I know I promised myself to you…and the last thing I wanted to do was hurt anyone so I left, it took me two years to realize I couldn’t go on in life running from what had to be done.”

She sat down next to the fire and continued, “I realize I must have hurt you more running than telling the truth, and even now I don’t want to hurt you but I need everyone’s help…no matter what happens.”

Kagome kneeled next to her “you’re a sister to me of course I will help, I would have always helped.”

Sango nodded “I knew you’d say that but I know after what you hear you may change your mind.”

Everyone got quiet pondering her statement but Sango only braced herself as she pulled back the blankets, the baby was quiet now in her arms but everyone looked. It was a little girl with thick black hair but what really drew everyone’s attention where the two tiny black triangles on her head flicking gently.

Sango gulped quietly as her heart raced “I don’t know how to say this…”

Kaede moved in her seat and asked the question everyone wanted answered “Sango dear who is ye child’s father?”

All eyes went to Sango as her eyes began to tear “I’m so sorry, I never meant to burden you all more but her father is…I-Inuyasha.”

Kagome stood but couldn’t speak, while Miroku had the opposite effect as he fell to his butt and stammered “W-what!?”

Sango hung her head as the infant opened its eyes, its golden gaze glancing around before it cooed happily at the kitsune standing near the basket, Sango breathed in and looked back up “Kagome…I’m sorry…Inuyasha and me…we never meant to…”

Kagome cut her off “no I don’t want to hear it, I can’t be here right now” she answered barely holding in her anger as she turned and walked outside briskly towards the well.

Sango began crying softly and Miroku was now speechless and sat in the corner dazed ‘h-how did I not see this…my Sango with Inuyasha, why? When?’

Kaede who had sat silently by moved next to Sango and half embraced her “why did ye and Inuyasha do it?”

Sango sighed softly as she looked to Shippo who was now sniffing the baby as it reached out with small clawed hands trying to grab him, the demon slayer looked back to Kaede “we never meant for it to go so far…” she started.

~Flashback~

Inuyasha glared at Sango, she had been near a hot spring getting ready to bathe after she tried to kill herself and Kohaku, the hanyou growled softly “what the hell were you thinking?” he was so angry that he didn’t try to hide his emotions at this point.

Sango stuttered “I-I…my family…Kohaku…I can’t keep going without them” she started crying.

Inuyasha pulled back into his shell “Keh” he muttered turning to leave, but suddenly arms wrap around him and he froze. Sango squeezed him as she let her pent up emotions free, Inuyasha wasn’t sure what to do about the extreme close contact and tried to pull away not knowing what to say.

Sango turned him around “Inuyasha I’m sorry…I don’t have anyone please just hold me…”

He swallowed hard ‘Kagome’s in her time, and Miroku would take advantage of the situation probably…she needs comfort” he shook his head ‘I cant let her be alone now, I know what it’s like.’

He was unsure of how to say it but he nodded slightly and Sango hugged him harder, he hugged back as best he could but loosened his grip when he smelt Sango’s salty tears get stronger as she finally released all her emotions and broke down crying. She pulled Inuyasha down and he tumbled back onto his butt as she collapsed on him and her whole body shook violently with each sob.

~End Flashback~

Sango brushed her child’s bangs “that wasn’t when it happened but it was because of that event that this all started” she looked up to see Miroku listening but still somewhat dazed, Kaede nodded and waited for Sango to continue.

Shippo poked at the baby “what’s her name?”

Sango’s train of thought was interrupted and she smiled “her name is Kirei Yasha.”

Shippo grinned as Kirei grabbed his hand and gurgled incoherently at him, he looked up at Sango “can I play with her?”

Sango looked at him “I don’t know Shippo she’s only a little over a year old…”

He looked at her with puppy eyes “can you just put her on the floor? I’ll be gentle.”

She decided it would be okay and unwrapped Kirei and set her on the floor, the infant crawled towards Shippo and growled playfully giggling as the kitsune began playing with a toy top and growling back softly.

Sango leaned back on her hands “I came back to tell Inuyasha I needed him to be by my side to raise our child…I hadn’t expected him to leave.”

She sighed “anyway at the time when he held me…”

~Flashback~

Sango had cried for what seemed like hours before she fell asleep on the hanyou, he couldn’t be too angry at the situation it wasn’t like he minded contact, but he would rather Kagome be here to help Sango, because he wasn’t sure what else to do. Sango moaned as she opened her swollen eyes, it felt good crying, she felt some relief in letting herself go she maneuvered her head and saw Inuyasha’s golden eyes staring at her, she blushed “oh kami! I’m sorry Inuyasha I didn’t mean to fall asleep!”

“Keh” came his only reply as he looked at the sky.

Sango made no move to get off him and followed his gaze “Inuyasha?”

He grunted in response so she continued “why did you save Kohaku…and me?”

He looked down at her “I couldn’t…well you see…” he blushed slightly but she didn’t notice, he then brushed her off with a growl “forget it.”

She didn’t want to but let it go, and as she realized that she was in a position that was somewhat intimate she blushed ‘I never expected Inuyasha to be the one to comfort me when I needed it most.’ She couldn’t stay to embarrassed as she didn’t think of Inuyasha as more than a friend, and there was nothing wrong with her laying on him.

He made a move to get up but Sango stopped him “Inuyasha…if I…if I need you…”

He sighed “I’ll be here” he said in a whisper he then stood her up and got up also “but don’t expect much, I’m just keeping my pack together…err…I mean I just…forget it!” he said gruffly and walked back towards the village.

Sango smiled ‘thank you Inuyasha’ and with that thought she followed quietly behind him.

One week later as she went down the spiral of depression again she got drunk at the inn the group was staying at, she threw up in the bushes outside her and Kagome’s room.

“Sango” came a low voice.

She turned around and saw Inuyasha on the roof looking at her “Inuyasha…I’m sorry…”

He growled softly “it’s none of my business if you can’t handle your stupid emotions”

She sniffled “I miss them…I’m alone…”

Inuyasha growled ‘why the hell should I care’ and he was about to leave but as he stood he could smell Sango’s tears ‘damn…damn it all!’

He hopped down and she ran to him hugging his form as she had done a week ago, he held her as he jumped back to the roof and sat her on his lap ‘idiot I’m only making this harder on myself…and as much as I don’t want to show I care, if any of the pack members cried I would do the same…’

He had thought of them as a pack for almost a year now but tried not to admit it, he was a hanyou and no matter how much Kagome had opened him up he still felt that he deserved loneliness.

He was brought out of his thoughts when he felt Sango’s tears touch the skin on his chest; she had managed to accidentally pull his haori open and was crying directly on his chest. He would normally be embarrassed by such contact but he knew that if Sango was not then he certainly wouldn’t interrupt her. Besides he didn’t know what to do to help, he sighed, “Sango, Kagome is here now why not talk to her?”

She didn’t move but spoke into his chest “please I don’t want to have to talk, you already know what it’s like to be alone you can understand me best” she replied half drunk no inhibitions to shield her as she spilled her soul to him “no one can ever understand the abandonment, the sadness I feel…except you…”

He definitely didn’t know what to say to that and looked at the sky still bottling his emotions and thoughts but let the demon slayer have her relief in her tears as she continued crying into his chest.

~End Flashback~

Miroku looked at her “so you didn’t think Kagome or I would be able to help?”

Sango shook her head “you could’ve helped probably but I didn’t want help exactly…just someone who understood and at the time only Inuyasha could understand fully.”

She looked to Kirei who was pulling on Shippo’s tail as he feigned it hurting, and the baby laughed as the kitsune rolled on the floor playing dead. Sango looked back up “please I don’t wish too speak anymore, my travel has been long and I was expecting to find Inuyasha here…I need time to think.”

Kaede nodded and although she knew Miroku had more questions as well as herself, she let it go for now letting the information sink in.

~

Kagome lay in her bed crying into her pillow ‘not only have I lost Inuyasha last year but to find out he had done…done…that! W-with Sango. So why had kissed me before? Even the day before he left, was that his goodbye? But how could they, we were friends and worst of all Sango knew how I felt towards him so why!?’

She pounded her fists into the pillow “Why!?” she screamed “Why Inuyasha!?”

Her mother looked up the stairs with worry ‘what has happened between those two now?’

Kagome hadn’t told her family that Inuyasha had been missing for a year, she couldn’t admit it to herself she always expected for him to show up any minute and yell at her and she would sit him, it would be like it was supposed to be. But he never came back he left abruptly in the night telling no one why or where he was going, Kagome rolled over, her red puffy eyes blinking away the tears “what do I do now?”

~

Sesshomaru stared at Inuyasha intently “are you leaving now?”

Inuyasha nodded solemnly “I have thought it over and now I know what I must do…” he set tetsaiga in front of his brother “goodbye.”

“I never thought you would take the cowards way out” said Sesshomaru “but if your going to kill yourself I won’t stop you.”

Sesshomaru could tolerate his brother but that didn’t mean he had a revelation and magically saw Inuyasha in a new light and was all buddy-buddy with him. He still hated him for tainting his family’s bloodline.

Inuyasha was unfazed by the demon lord’s words and only turned away and left without looking back, Sesshomaru watched and showed no emotion as his only brother left to take his life.

Inuyasha had walked for three days into the western mountains and now stood on an icy slope freezing ‘I deserve this…I know why Sango left me…she was disgusted that she had let a half breed touch her in such a way…no good can come from a hanyou like me.’ He had let these feelings root into his very soul for the two years Sango was gone, he searched but had never found her, but he held on for two years before deciding to let despair win, his broken heart also feeling betrayed only added to his years of depression.

He stared at the setting sun as the cold harsh wind whipped against his freezing body, but he ignored the cold and only thought back on the worst parts of his life ignoring the good times. He let depression and sadness eat away at his soul as his body gave way to the cold and collapsed unable to take any more abuse. The demon inside fought to stay alive only thinking of self-preservation his eyes bled red but his body was to weak to do much as he tried to crawl.

~

Sango looked over as Kirei sat up and her eyes bled red, Sango’s eyes widened “Kirei!?”

The infant growled in its little voice and Shippo’s hair stood on end “Sango! She’s speaking in inu youkai tongue…how does she know that!?”

Sango stammered, “I-I don’t know! Can you understand her?”

Shippo shook his head “not entirely…just something about Inuyasha.”

Kirara mewled to Sango and the demon slayer looked to her “you know?”

Kirara nodded and stood up walking to the door mewing loudly and walked outside transforming, Sango grabbed Kirei and went after Kirara and Miroku couldn’t help but follow. The cat urged them on its back and took off as Sango held Kirei tightly while Shippo had barely managed to grab Miroku’s robes.

~

Kagome felt her heart give a pull and she felt like crying all over again, she stood and looked at the well from her window “Inuyasha?”

~

Sesshomaru looked at Tetsaiga as it rattled in his grip pulling towards the mountains, he sighed silently ‘even now I can’t keep the sword from Inuyasha,’ he started walking leaving Jaken and Rin in a small field where they slept quietly ‘what has that half breed done now? Can he not even kill himself right?’

~

Kikyo stopped in her tracks as she felt her soul pull to the western lands, she raised a delicate eyebrow “what have you done Inuyasha?”

~

Minutes Earlier

The hanyou stood where he had once laid his eyes fully bled over he wavered slightly as he held on with his last bit of strength, staring at the figure before him “Naraku!” his demon side growled vaguely recognizing the evil hanyou before him.
