Apocalyptic Meltdown
“Hey, Miroku. Your hand feeling alright?”
The monk had been flexing his hands since they’d returned from that fight with the giant grasshopper Miroku sucked up into his void. If Miroku hadn’t been there, they would’ve been in some serious trouble. Of course Inuyasha would never admit that. It would be too hurtful to his over inflated ego. Of course, Kagome and Shippo would probably never let him live it down.
“I am not sure, Inuyasha. I hope so.” The soft sound of worry in Miroku’s own voice didn’t help to soothe Inuyasha’s qualms.
Getting into his usual upright sitting position, Inuyasha’s eyes closed. However, his one eye left open watched Miroku continue to flex his hands, and remove the cloth from around his hands and stare at his hand tentatively. It wasn’t until then Inuyasha saw the tiny slits expanding outwards from the void; seemingly stretching it. The soft escape of a sigh from Miroku’s lips didn’t miss Inuyasha either, and uneasily, Inuyasha fell into a light sleep.
“Miroku? Miroku! Where are ya?”
The sunset spanned ahead of them as the tints of orange and peach painted the sky above them towards the far horizon. Inuyasha had woken up to find Miroku gone, and had arisen in search of him. He didn’t bother to wake up Kagome and the others, because they went to sleep late, and would probably start whining about it. Especially Kagome.
“tch. Women.”
Walking through the forest, Inuyasha continued his search for Miroku when he suddenly heard a scream from further within the forest, and followed it.
“Miroku!?”
Hopping through and above the trees, Inuyasha neared a rounded clearing near the center of the forest, and beheld a sight that sent a jumpstart to his heart. The air around the clearing warped and shifted sporadically as Miroku sitting in the middle clutched at his hand in agonizing pain.
“MIROKU!”
Panic set into Inuyasha’s soul when Miroku didn’t hear him. The air warping at faster more constant moments, Inuyasha screamed out to Miroku hoping he would be heard.
“MIROKU!”
He wasn’t, and just as he was about to jump into the clearing and grab Miroku, there was a blood curdling scream that sent throughout the entire fores, and a black void of nothingness with strips and slithers of light encircling it. The black hole grew larger and larger to an impossible size, and Inuyasha jumping towards it trying to get through, was pushed backwards and away left to hear the soul evaporating screams of his best friend.
Swiftly, in one cataclysmic flash, the black hole exploded into a black vacuum void that dragged with it nearly everything surrounding. To keep himself just from being sucked up, Inuyasha was forced to grab persistently onto the tree that he stood on, and he stared into the blurred vision in front of him as the void slowly grew smaller and smaller till it shrunk to reach nonexistence. No longer was there Miroku’s screams, and no longer was there Miroku. In his place was an enormous hole that spanned out to where some of the trees used to be.
Jumping into the crater, Inuyasha saw not a bead, not a cloth…nothing to remember Miroku by. Only the heartless crater of his ending.
“M-Miroku…”
Silent tears slid from Inuyasha’s eyes and grew to wrack his entire body with ferocity as he sat there on his knees in the same position Miroku was in before his semi-masochistic demise.
“Miroku!”
Inuyasha’s eyes flew open in fear and panic. It only grew at the sight of Miroku’s body not lying in front of him, and the sheets neatly made as if he’d left to go somewhere.
Running out of their hut, he searched around with frantic eyes and running nearly bumped into the priestess as she held her laundry in one hand, and an apple in another. The apple dropped to the floor and rolled across the dirt floor presently ignored.
“Inuyasha…what is the matter with you?”
“Have you seen Miroku!?”
“Inuyasha…calm down first before…”
For a brief moment, Inuyasha lost it, and grabbed Kagome by her shirt, and bringing her to his face, allowed her to see the terror and alarm set openly within them. Allowed to see her to see his eyes searching frenetically.
“Where is he!? TELL ME!”
“I don’t know! Inuyasha! Let me go!”
Quickly, he let her go, and she dropped to the floor with a thump watching him run off quickly in search, screaming. Inuyasha’s heart beat stronger than any fight could ever cause it to. He leaped from tree to tree feeling anxiety as his nightmare came back to him in a long pause as if a movie passing before is eyes in harsh evocation.
“Miroku! MIROKU!”
More than anything, he hoped the crater didn’t exist. He hoped he wouldn’t find the nightmarish sight of Miroku on the floor screaming. He hoped he wasn’t too late. The more familiar the trees grew, the more frightened his heart became. So great was his fear, nausea began to settle in, but he persevered in search of Miroku.
“MIROKU!!”
“Yes, Inuyasha…?”
The unfamiliar response made him happier than anything in the world. He never knew it possible for one voice to make you so relieved.
“Miroku!?”
“Inuyasha…why are you yelling? I am right here…”
More replies. Even though he knew exactly where Miroku was, he needed to once again hear a reply just to know that he wasn’t once again dreaming. Once again having a separate ending to his nightmare.
“Where!?”
“Inuyasha…I’m right beneath you…Why are you still yelling?”
Jumping downwards, Miroku had to backup lest he risk being squished. The look on Inuyasha’s face…was most definitely not what he’d expected. There was a look of fear, panic, relief, elation…it was all there. Never has Inuyasha looked so vulnerable before someone, and…it confused Miroku making him wonder what must have happened while he was gone. Surely it must’ve been an apocalyptic experience for Inuyasha to look so open before him.
“Miroku…”
“Yes? Inuyasha, what’s wrong?”
The arms thrown around him made him freeze in fear of the unfamiliar gesture. This must not be Inuyasha. Death must be upon him before Inuyasha would ever give a hug to anyone. Let alone Miroku.
Is Inuyasha hugging me!?
Post haste did Miroku pull Inuyasha away from him, and reach out his arm in threatening stance and stare long and hard at the Inuyasha laying on the floor staring at him with innocence.
“Who are you, and what have you done with Inuyasha vile demon?”
The words broke a smile across Inuyasha’s face, and what followed was another unexpected action. A laugh. A laugh that rumbled from the pits of Inuyasha’s soul happy and resounding throughout the forest till the birds afraid themselves flew away to find a safe haven away from the perplexity of such a laugh in relation to the laugher.
“…Inuyasha……..? Are you okay….?”
The even harder laugh made Miroku fear for his own life, and prepare himself to bolt in case the not quite Inuyasha Inuyasha decided to attack.
O.O YATA! Ah...Yokatta. I'm so happy I finished this first chapter. I haven't written a fanfiction in a REALLY long time. Almost 2 years now. O.O I was afraid I was out of practice or something. <(^_^)> FREE COOKIES FOR REVIEWERS!
