Hitokatanaranu Kaihou - Special Key
Prologue - Flight or Fight?
Flight or Fight, such instinctual responses really after all it was either stand your ground and defend it or run away to live to fight another day. Presently one Kagome Higurashi was running. When faced with Naraku’s evil and accessing the damage to her friends she chose flight.
So there she was running through the forest with branches, twigs and vines catching at her face, hands and clothing. She had lost count of how many times her clothing had torn or snagged and the amount of times that she tripped and fell to the ground.
Why hadn’t Naraku caught the little miko from the future you may ask? The simple answer was the evil hanyou bastard got off on playing with her as a cat will toy with a mouse. And both the mouse and Kagome knew they were doomed. Therefore she ran crying tears of frustration and anger. Three and half years of searching and fighting were going to end like this? She wasn’t naïve or unrealistic, she just supposed they had a better fighting chance.
Kagome thought of all the things she missed. There hadn’t really been a first kiss. After all snapping InuYasha out of a demonic rage did NOT count. Dating hadn’t happened; after all why bother to cultivate a relationship when you were only going to have to lie to explain the long absences. Truthfully she’s never been in love. What she had with Inu Yasha had been more of a puppy love, hero worship and lust all rolled into one. As was the case with such things when confronted with the reality of like it could not stand up. The illusion crumbled.
But Kags had much more serious problems on hand. Namely her poor body had been battling and now running for more than two hours. Even for a person as fit as she it was close to the limit. Now with lungs burning and legs screaming in agony she knew there was not much time or energy left for her escape. Just as Kagome made that determination philosophically, out stepped Naraku into her path; directly in front of her forcing her to stop. Fuck!
“Ah Kikyo’s reincarnation are you going somewhere? And after all the trouble I took so we could be alone?” With that his tentacles grabbed her none too gently and brought them close together. “Finally! The last of the Shikon jewel Shards!” In his hand appeared the fully formed jewel. Most of the jewel was blackened but for the pieces Kagome had previously around her neck. And even those were slowly losing their purity. “It seems Miko that I no longer have use for you as you have found the last of my jewel shards, unless you are willing to become a concubine?”
With that our gently reared Kagome looked him straight in the eyes are spit in his face. Not the best move, certainly the bravest and foolhardiest move she could make. “Insolent wench, I was going to be lenient with you. But now you have left me no choice” and with that his tentacles began to squeeze our heroine some of them drawing blood. As a final insult his clawed hand stabbed her in the stomach.
Her eyes rolling back from the pain and dangerously close to passing out from the blood lost Kagome’s Miko powers came on line. If you were to compare prior manifestations with today’s power it would have been comparing a trickle of waters to a deluged flood. Naraku screamed in agony and prepared to fling Kagome. Our little miko had enough presence of mind to grab the completed jewel before she became airborne.
Fortunately for Kagome she was now free of Naraku’s grasp. Unfortunately her confrontation with him took place by a cliff with over a fifty foot drop onto a dry river bed. There she was holding the completed jewel falling to her death. Deep in her heart she wished that she had been strong enough to protect her friends and the world they lived in. She felt deeply despair over her failure in protecting the Shikon, a task that she had literally been born to do. A flash of red and white caught her peripheral vision and a strong arm caught her around the waist turning her body so that she was on top.
In her tired and wounded state she did not recognize her savior. Second’s ticked away feeling more like minutes or hours as they free fell. She closed her eyes in preparation of impact. Landing was by no means pretty. Bones broke, blood squirted and organs protested the hard contact with the dry river bed. Kagome lifted her head as much as she was able and looked into the golden eyes of her savior.
“Why” she gasped out “why would you save me?” looking earnestly into his eyes for a reason, for a clue even a hint of his intentions. She certainly didn’t expect him to answer. She even would have bet that she was going to die with a bona fide mystery on her hands. Almost so softly she had to strain to hear it came the answer. “Because Miko you are the key.”
