Chapter 1: Battles and Thoughts
Inu Yasha was leading his pack to find the jewel shard that Kagome had sensed earlier that day. The shard kept moving around incredibly fast, but Kagome knew that it wasn’t Koga. She could always sense him. Inu Yasha kept his ears perked up listening for Koga; he knew just how close they were passing to his territory. The possibility that he would smell Kagome was quite high, especially since she was currently ending her heat cycle. Her smell was screaming ‘Last chance to come and get it! Hurry up!’ He was having problems ignoring it, but planned to beg if need be for Kagome to allow him to mate her after they had defeated Naraku.
For all he cared, the Shikon jewel could just stay in pieces if that meant that he could keep her. He had long ago set aside any feelings that he might have for Kikyo because he knew that Kagome was the only one that mattered to him. The only reason that the two of them fought constantly and he kept his foot permanently stuck inside of his mouth was frustration and anticipation.
“Feh, are you certain that you aren’t picking up that mangy wolf. He already promised you that he would give you his shards as soon as we defeat Naraku and find the other shards.” He looked back at Kagome who had taken on a very pissed off glare.
“Yes, I am quite sure,” she said in a very low and controlled voice.
“Inu Yasha, I smell cat demons,” Shippo piped up, trying to defend his momma.
Sango quickly threw up her harikotse (sp? let me know) at the trees up ahead. “There is something up there.” With that said, there was a loud crash head just on the other side of the tree line. Inu Yasha could hear the cussing coming from whatever had just landed. Sango caught her weapon and followed her comrade over to the fallen being.
Sure enough, Shippo had been right. It was a cat demon.
“It has the jewel shard. Right there in her top,” Kagome confirmed as she made her way around the trees. It appeared that the cat demon had been stalking them and running off to keep them off of her scent.
“You have a jewel shard that we will be taking now. You may either hand it over, or you may die. Your choice bitch.” Inu Yasha yelled at the now standing cat demon that began to make a laughing/purring sound.
“You are only a half breed with humans to back you up. Why should I even consider you a minor threat? You cannot even touch me, Mila of the Southern Cat Demon Clan. It will be you who die when I take that girl that sensed my shard. She even knew where I have it hidden,” Mila challenged.
Inu Yasha gave a single nod of his head before pulling out his Tetsusaiga. The fully transformed fang appeared and the battle began.
“You may not think much of us, but we are strong enough to have defeated many demons stronger and more powerful than you,” Inu Yasha bragged.
Mila just smirked and jumped to land just on the side of the hanyou and issue a harsh kick. Inu Yasha was a little too slow to react before he found himself hitting a tree from the force of the kick. He turned around and screamed, “You bitch!”
Sango got in a good hit with her weapon and Kilala hissed at the demon before Inu Yasha hit her with his attack. He then got between his pack and the offending Mila and used his wind scar. She succumbed to the powerful attack.
Sheathing his sword, Inu Yasha walked over to Kagome and placed his arm around her shoulders to guide her to the mess that had once been a very regal looking cat demon named Mila.
“Where’s the shard?” he asked in a demanding voice
“Right here,” Kagome responded, picking up the shard, which instantly purified at her touch.
Miroku, who had been approaching Sango, stated softly, “Well done. She seemed rather easy even with the shard to defeat. Kagome, you are a marvel, as are you my lovely Sango.” The echoing smack that was heard was so predictable. It really would have been weird if he did not try to be a pervert and receive a red handprint for his efforts. The group had noticed that Miroku had confined his hand to Sango exclusively, even while they were in a village.
Shippo took up his spot on Kagome’s should as she walked next to Inu Yasha. The group would wonder to the next village to try to get word on another jewel shard, Naraku or another demon causing trouble.
Kagome’s thoughts turned reflective as she traveled next to the object of her desire, Inu Yasha. ‘What will become of me when we do finish this. We have been working three years; I have graduated and now stay here in this time. I don’t know if I will ever be able to cope living in the future. This is my home now. I don’t even belong where I came from. I love to visit Mom, Souta and Gramps, but I feel that I leave my home and heart behind every time I leave. I know that Miroku and Sango will be getting married before we know it. Shippo and I overheard them making plans. I think that it just more reflex that she continues to smack him when he decides to cop a feel. She’s quit screaming pervert. Inu Yasha keeps looking at me. I’ve got to get inside that head. I have to know how he feels about me.’
Inu Yasha kept looking at his miko, who was in deep thought. ‘I wonder what she is thinking about. I know she probably misses her family and even friends from her time. She quit talking about them quite some time ago. Do I make her unhappy? Does she only stay with me because of this quest? Would she even consider staying here? I know she considers Miroku and Sango as family, kind of like a brother and sister, and Shippo seems to act like her child. He listens to her; she spoils and protects him, although that is mainly from me. She has brought each member of this pack under my protection with just words. She is the one that keeps us going with high spirits. So generous, loving and beautiful.’
“What is it, wench? You keep staring,” Inu Yasha grumbled at her direction. Kagome had been trying to keep from using the s-word, but his attitude was just begging for it.
“SIT!”
Once he had managed to get out of his crater, Inu Yasha growled. Sango defused his anger by letting him redirect it to his growling stomach.
“I think it is time to stop for tonight. This is a great spot to set up camp. There is a river near by and we are covered in this small clearing. Besides, I can hear everybody’s stomach telling us that we skipped stopping for lunch.”
Once camp was set up and everyone fed, Sango, Shippo and Kagome made their way to take their baths. This was their ritual now. The girls and Shippo get cleaned up while Inu Yasha holds Miroku back. When they finish, the guys get cleaned up. Kagome had taken to providing the whole group with their preference in soaps from her time. Sango and Kagome shared the fruity smelling one; Shippo had some fun looking ones with shapes and characters. They just smelled clean. Miroku preferred a musky one that Sango kept sniffing. She loved the smell. Inu Yasha picked his own out when he went to the store with Mrs. Higurashi. I had a very woodsy smell to it, a very clean smell that made him think of the God Tree that he curled up in every time that they were in the village, or he was in Kagome’s time.
While gathering their supplies, a whirlwind approached the group. Inu Yasha immediately started growling causing Kagome to pause and feel out for jewel shards. She figured out what had caused his irritation; Koga was on his way. A matter of seconds later, he showed up.
“Hello, my dearest. Is mutt face treating you well?” he flirted.
“What do you mean, just showing up and getting all over Kagome. She doesn’t like you!” Inu Yasha was incensed.
The two exchanged words that Kagome just blocked out as she finished helping Sango grab what they needed. A smile pulled at the corners of her lips. ‘Those two are so predictable. In about two seconds, they are going to start exchanging blows and I will have to sit Inu Yasha. Yep, here we go…’
“Inu Yasha, sit boy,” she said somewhat softly. There wasn’t the usual trace of annoyance or irritation in her command. As Inu Yasha got face planted, Koga ran up to Kagome to do his usual flirting, call her his woman, and promise to be back to claim her before running off to join the hunting party that he left.
Sango and Kagome finally made their way to the hot spring, leaving a very ticked Inu Yasha screaming obscenities at his miko.
“Ahhh, this is heaven,” Kagome said on a sigh as she slipped further into a reclining position, almost floating on her back.
Sango added to her agreement. The two were unaware of the danger that had befallen their comrades.
--With Inu Yasha and Miroku--
“Inu Yasha, watch out!” Miroku tried to warn his friend of the oncoming attack from the cat demon that they were currently engaged in battle with. The pair was attacked only a matter of moments after the other half of the group had left. Miroku couldn’t use his wind tunnel without causing serious damage because he couldn’t back away and could possibly suck Inu Yasha up.
Inu Yasha let his wind scar loose, but the cat demon, Lynx, dodged the attack by jumping out of its path. Lynx sent his own series of attacks toward Inu Yasha, the one who had destroyed his mate, which knocked Inu Yasha down.
The sounds of the progressively dangerous battle reached Sango and Kagome after Shippo panicked at the sounds of the wind scar. Sango jumped out grabbing her huge, bone boomerang while Kagome grabbed her bow and arrows. Kagome told Shippo to hide as she ran behind her ‘sister’. The girls were uncaring about their state of dress in their hurry to reach their friends and loved ones.
The girls ran up to the battle and were behind the cat demon. Kagome had pulled an arrow out of her quiver as she ran. She stopped and pulled back, letting the arrow fly.
The arrow turned a purifying pink and hit the demon straight in its heart from behind. Lynx turned to ash as he was purified in an instant. Kagome could sense no jewel shard, but ran closer to where the battle had taken place and their campground clearing. The first thing she saw was Miroku standing over a red patch on the ground.
As she got closer, her heart started pounding harder and harder. A broken cry could be heard coming from the sweet miko as she saw the shredded ears of her love. “No, not Inu Yasha. He can’t be gone…” Her words were muffled by her sobs as threw herself over her now dead friend.
Sango looked toward the tree line to see a small tornado approaching.
“Wow, babe. Already strutting around for me? I would prefer if I were the only one to see you naked. You know mutt face should not be allowed the privilege. Where is…” his questions trailed off as he saw what Kagome was hunched over.
Koga walked over to Kagome’s pack and pulled out a blanket to cover her with. He pulled her into his arms and emitted some low-pitched whines to try to calm the sobbing girl down.
Miroku had pulled out Sango’s kimono and held it out, allowing her to slip it on. He put his arms around her back while saying a short prayer to commemorate their fallen friend. “I am so sorry Inu Yasha; I couldn’t save you,” he apologized after he had finished.
A few minutes passed in silence. After a short period of time two of Koga’s comrades joined the group, his ever-present friends, Ginta and Hakkaku.
“We should get Kagome home. She needs to mourn and get her feelings back under control. Which way is her village,” Koga declared. He was assuming leadership of Inu Yasha’s pack. Even though they fought, he had felt like he could trust the hanyou. He, in fact, did trust him because he had allowed him to protect the one that he wished to mate.
Sango whispered, “Koga, there is something that you should know since it seems that you wish to join us. Kagome comes from the future. She travels through the well that is in Inu Yasha’s forest. We need to head that way, but it is still a few days travel. We need to turn around and head that way.”
The group turned toward the northwest and started the sad, stoic trek back. Neither male made a single move toward their chosen females; rather everything was odd and quiet. There was no butt grabbing, smacks, arguments or any of the normal, familiar routines that each had come to feel cocooned in.
A/N: I hope you like it. Let me know what you think. I am already working on more chapters, but I am considering doing a lot of things. Have a good day!
