Just a Little Rivalry

Nope, I do not own a thing. Well, this story is mine, so I guess I own that. Okay, Inu Yasha and anything else that is associated with the show is not mine.

On with the show.

Chapter 1

“Hey, Koga,” Kagome cheerfully greeted her friend.

“Yo, Kags! When are you going to finally put me out of misery and accept my offer of dinner and a movie? You know you’d enjoy it,” Koga teased. He started asking Kagome out since they first met as freshmen at Tam University. They were both Criminal Justice majors. Due to that fact, they managed to get several of their classes together. They were juniors now and the best of friends after several study get-togethers. He still asked her out, but it was different now-almost like an inside joke. Kagome knew that he wasn’t serious, and he was really great with helping her out with the more zealous guys who persisted with asking her out. "Come on, let's get to class. You know Sango is already there."

-----------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, across that particular clearing on campus, a hanyou’s dog-ears perked up to the tinkling laughter that floated across to him. He’d been making his way towards the student union to meet his friend Miroku for a game of foosball after class. He looked over at the girl walking with the wolf demon.

‘Wait a minute. I know him. That’s Koga! What’s he doing with her? He used to only hang out with Sesshomaru, Ginta and Hakaku. I guess that’s his new toy. She’s cute.’

Inu Yasha continued to watch the couple as they made their way towards McKinley hall.

‘I can give Koga hell and get a cute date for this weekend all at the same time. Let me see…where are they going…great, got them. I’ll meet up with them later.’

The hanyou followed the pair into the building that mostly hosted science classes. He continued until he saw them enter a classroom. He took care to note where they sat. After that he left and went onto his original destination with a new plan for his free time.

‘I should go get backup from Miroku. He wouldn’t want to miss this. He is always up for a little fun. Especially when that fun includes irritating one of Sesshomaru’s buddies. He’ll be perfect for getting Koga distracted and out of the way so that I can introduce myself to that chick. Yep, she’s mine.’

-----------------------------------------------------

Koga and Kagome took their seats in their 10:00. As they took their usual seats near the windows that they opened, Koga wondered why his friend’s younger brother would be following them. He decided to throw off his presence as just coincidental.

Koga sat down and pulled out his notebook and lead pen, preparing for the droning of professor Totosai. He remembered when he and Kagome first met. They were in the same prerequisite algebra class, and he had rushed when he first spotted her, grinning at his luck for the conveniently empty seat next to her. She turned and smiled what had to be the most innocently sexy smile that Koga had ever seen and started to talk to him.

--Flashback--

“Hey. I’m Kagome,” she simply introduced herself.

Koga smiled at his luck. ‘She’s outgoing and friendly.’ “I’m Koga. What’re you majoring in?”

“Criminal Justice. You?”

“Wow, same here. Got a boyfriend or anybody significant.”

“Nope, not really. Why?” she flirted slightly knowing that she wasn’t interested in dating at the moment. ‘My gosh. I am being such a tease. Why the hell not? He seems so friendly, and he is cute.’ Just starting college was enough without having to start a serious relationship with a guy.

“I want you to go out with me tonight, and I don’t want another guy hanging around making claims,” he bluntly replied. He flashed a big smile her way.

A light, sweet laughter came from Kagome. She smiled at him as she shook her head. “I know you’re nice and all, but I don’t think so. No offense or anything, I just don’t really want a boyfriend or a date right now.”

Koga nodded his head, all the more determined. He planned to talk her into it soon. Persistence is the key.

--End Flashback--

No matter however many times Koga had asked Kagome out on a date that semester, she always turned him down saying that she just didn’t want to really date. She had accepted his invitations to study for tests and do homework together. They had both walked out of that class with a solid A. After that, they had met together and tried to get as many classes together or at least keep the same professors. He still cared deeply for Kagome although it was the type of affection one would hold for a lifetime friend rather than a lover.

After Koga acknowledged his true feelings, he just fell into the role of protector because nobody ever messed with his friends and came out on top. Koga remembered one guy that turned persistence into a hobby. Miroku, who happened to be a friend of Inu Yasha’s, had Writing Composition with Koga and Kagome their spring semester, freshman year. His hand had religiously crept towards Kags’s bottom. He nearly lost that hand many times. He should thank Kami that Kagome was the one to handle him first.

Koga was snatched out of his reverie when Professor Totosai announced a pop quiz. The resounding groan made him giggle with glee-at least on inside.

-----------------------------------------------------

Inu Yasha spotted his friend sitting in the common area. Miroku jumped up when he spotted Inu Yasha heading his way with that look in his face that meant he was brewing trouble, or at least a little mischief.

“Hey, Miroku. You remember Koga, right?”

“Yeah. He hangs out with that stuck up prick that is supposed to be your brother. What about him?”

“Yep. I just saw him with this really cute girl. None of the others were even in sight. How about trying to irritate the ass?”

“Whatcha got in mind?”

“I think I should have a date this weekend. What about you? In?”

“Duh! Let’s go.”

-----------------------------------------------------

Kagome waved a friend down after class. She and Sango had been friends-sisters really-ever since nursery school. The two had brothers that were same age that also had a close friendship thanks to the constant contact between the families. Because of their close relationship, the Taiji’s and the Higarashi’s had been have really become more like family to each other rather than just very close friends.

The group decided to go study outside in The Grove. All three sat down in the grass under a huge shade tree and pulled out their work for their 12:30. While getting situated, they talked about Professor Hakitaki, the clumsiest person any of them had seen. That really meant a lot too considering most had seen Kagome who constantly had scraped knees, elbows and bruises from tripping and bumping into almost anything.

“I hope he doesn’t trip again going up the stairs. That poor guy is going to get seriously hurt one day. I almost wonder how he has not been already,” commented Sango.

“I don’t know how, but he always seems to make it out of all his slip ups unscathed. I would love to be able to do that. I bruised my thigh this morning just getting out of the shower. It is nice to see that I am not the only klutz around, though,” Kagome mused.

Koga burst out laughing at the memory of the professor knocking the podium over and landing on top of it. “You know, he is just vertically challenged. I think that he has gotten so…”he trailed off as a shadow fell over the group. He knew who it belonged to just by the smell permeating around them.

“Hey, Koga. Whatcha been up to?” inquired a gruff voice. The owner was smiling, but the smile looked more like a smirk than a genuine smile.

“What the hell do you want, mangy mutt? Whoever said you could come over and start talking to me and my friends?” Koga growled and snapped out at the silver haired stranger.

“Koga! What is your problem? All he did was ask what you’ve been up to! I swear, I have never seen this attitude of yours to a simple question!” a surprised Kagome yelled at her friend. “The only reason I have ever seen you be mean was if someone was coming onto me or Sango.”

Her glare could have killed if the wolf demon had been susceptible to die from such means.

“Hey. My name is Kagome, and this is Sango. You are?” Kagome said as she turned to the guy that she had yet to really acknowledge.

“Inu Yasha. Don’t worry about Koga. I have always been very good at getting under his skin. Aren’t I boy?” Inu Yasha smirked at Koga.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. What do you want? Can’t you see we’re studying?” Koga continued to glare at Inu Yasha.

“Just came over to say hi and find out the names of these two beautiful women that you had with you. Can’t believe you’re keeping two girlfriends. Wonder what Sesshy will think about that?”

“They aren’t my girlfriends; they’re my friends. And Sesshomaru has no right to think anything about my love life. He’s been swapping between Yura and Kagura for years now.”

“Well, then. Kagome, would you like to go see the game on Saturday with me? There’s a killer party afterwards. You could bring Sango, and I’ll bring Miroku. He’s over there,” Inu Yasha gestured over at his friend who got distracted on the way by talking to a red headed woman that he apparently knew.

“I don’t know. Sango and I’ll have to talk about it. How about you give me your number, so that I can call you later.”

“Sure…here you go.” Inu Yasha wrote his name and number on a scrap piece of paper, hastily torn from his notebook. Kagome accepted it and sent a look towards Sango that indicated they were going and have fun causing trouble.

A pissed off growl broke the semi-silence from Koga’s direction as Inu Yasha made his way toward his friend. “What the fuck? You want to date that dick head?”

“It’s none of your business if I do want to go out on a date or not. We’re friends, but you are not my boss. On top of that, I did not accept. I said that I would talk to Sango about it and give him an answer later.” Turning toward Sango, she looked as if she were about to blow more than a mere fuse. “Well, what do you think? Up to a party after the game on Saturday? I think I could use the distraction.”

Sango just nodded her head and tried to get the others’ attention back to the work at hand. After bringing up a few questions, she managed to get a response and stop the growling. ‘Oh, boy. I hope that this does not escalate any further between Kagome and Koga. Maybe I should talk them into ordering the Thursday Night Pizza Special and renting a movie. Hmm, yeah. I’ll talk them into after class. We only have our 2:00 after this class, so we have plenty of time this evening-even with doing homework.’

A/N This is my first fanfiction-EVER. I did check this over for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. (Some of them are intentional, though, to mimic a casual college dialect pattern.) Please read and review. I would really appreciate feedback.
