Chapter One

The ferry girls all stood around the small room, all unafraid to report to the young man sitting behind the desk. It wasn't their fault but they'd take the blunt of it just the same. For the past week they'd been failing to bring the souls of the dead to the Reikia. Ningen and youkai, it didn't matter; the souls ended up missing. Normally when one died the soul would leave the body almost immediately. Yet by the time they got there it wasn't there anymore. The soul had just vanished into thin air. It didn't make any sense to them but things weren't going to well. The ogres were blaming it on them and they swore it was the ogres fault. They had to be wrong about the time of death. It took some time before the soul wandered off. So the ogres had to be wrong about the time and place of death. That didn't explain why the souls had completely vanished. Nor the increase in deaths. Still it was nice to put the blame on someone besides themselves.

"Sir, I'm afraid we have more bad news. All five souls we'd been sent out to recieve have disappeared." Botan stepped forward being the head girl. She knew her boss wouldn't take the news that well. She'd done everything in her power to make sure the souls were found. There was only so much they could do. Their job was to transport souls not find them. That didn't stop the young man from glaring at them with anger. She cringed inwardly, please no more spankings. "It was just like the other time Koenma. By the time we got there they had departed."

"Yes, you may all calm down. I am well aware that it isn't your fault. You've done what you could so stop cowering behind Botan. Show some backbone. Now, I have an errand for each of you to carry out. My father has discovered the cause of the missing souls and I'm afraid we are about to face another crisis. It has been over two centuries since we've had to deal with any thing of this magnitude. I am handing each of you a name, you will deliver the summons to the proper party." Koenma put his seal on each one before handing them out to the seven ferry girls. "Do NOT come back until they have been placed directly in the hands of the parcipiant."

Botan took the envelope handed to her and frowned. She didn't want to deliver this letter. What the hell was Koenma thinking? How was she supposed to find him? Koenma must be angry with her! He'd likely kill her before asking what she wanted. Was he even alive? She'd thought for damn sure Kurama had killed the sadistic bastard. Why had Enma let the man continue living and for so long? He'd kill her. Would her soul go missing once he'd turned her into a pile of ash? "Koenma there must be some mistake. Are you trying to get me killed?"

"I assure you, it is necessary. Everything will be explained at a later time. Now, go. I don't have time to coddle you Botan. Do as you are told." He stamped another paper and sought the file on his desk. Was it finally time? It had come centuries early but he wasn't surprised with the way things had gone in the last two centuries. The last few detectives had done lousy jobs at maintaining the peace. He'd offered to bring Yusuke back under his employment but his father didn't even want to consider that option. He hardly ever went against his father, only when he thought it best for the future of the Ningenkai. He should have done so but had put hope in Enma. Now they were all paying for his father's hate and lack of control.

The girls left him alone, so his slender fingers opened the file. At least his father had gotten this part right. He'd gone about it a shitty way but it had to be done. The girl was the key to making all this work. Hopefully she'd have what it took to redeem those that had been selected. What shocked him was that his father had chosen three of his former team. Even if they did fit the parts. It showed just how desperate his father had become to get things under control. There wasn't much time left and there would be hell on earth; literally.

~~~~A week later~~~~
The seven men all sat around in the small room. Many feelings could be felt swirling around, the emotions raw. Many were thinking how long it would be before a fight broke out. A few sneers were passed along, mumbles of death and pain. Snickers were also heard as if they found the situation funny. The sky outside was just as ominous as the moods within the occupants. All were pissed at being summoned without so much as an explanation. A few didn't care to be called upon by the Reikai prince. Yet the summons said to come or death would be the penalty. The frustration floated off the walls as someone shifted.
"When is that fool going to show? I've got better things to be doing than sitting here." Hiei folded his arms and huffed. What the hell was that baka thinking. Was he wanting to start a war in the damn conference room? He for one didn't care to waste his time on the few around but some of his former allies didn't feel the same. Two centuries hadn't softened the hate. Even for him he found it distasteful seeing the one youkai looking more than pleased with himself sitting on the floor. That sick bastard needed to die, why wasn't he dead? It was a good question in which he'd ask Koenma. Or Kurama for that matter. Didn't he know how to kill anyone right? He'd always known his human side had left him soft and weak. That plant should have sucked the life out of him. His eyes lingered over the two men he hadn't seen in almost two centuries. After the first Makai tournament he decided ruling wasn't to his liking. So, he'd stayed where he was; with Mukuro. The woman was one to understand his past and what he was. He'd never been foolish enough to consider himself in love with the woman but they had a relationship of convienance. It was better this way, no need to get emotionally attached to anyone. He preferred to live his life in solitary. The only person he sought out in all this time had been Yukina. The girl had married and mated with Kuwabara. The man was gone now but had given his sister two children. She still lived at the temple, raising her family and their children. She looked happy, so he was content to watch her from afar.
"Patience, I'm sure he'll come soon." Yomi crossed his legs and leaned back on the hard chair. He could understand the small man's impatience. At first he'd thought to ignore the summons. The idea of having a warrant out for his death would have interfered in his plans. Plus, his son had also recieved one. It had taken an intense beating to get his son off his ass. The last two centuries he'd been training and preparing to one day uniting the three realms. He'd gone on his trip of self discovery and he still wanted unification. He'd given up all his power to go along with Yusuke's plan. He didn't regret it. Now he saw that it had been for the best. He would never have won against Mukuro. That wasn't the way to unify the lands. A different method would be needed. Best to rule others out of respect than fear. He'd spent almost two centuries getting more powerful and obtaining more wealth. He'd been wealthy before but now he was the richest in the Makai. He wasn't the most powerful though, that irked him. As he got stronger so did those that would present a challenge to him. One of them being the woman that held the title as King. Mukuro had been the king for the last fifty years. He let her have the title, it meant little. Most of the youkai thought more highly of him than the bionic bitch. Yes, he'd keep obtaining more. The only person he cared for was his son. Even that had it's limits.
Yusuke wasn't sure how much more he could take. He didn't give a damn what Koenma had to say. Nothing was worth looking at those two for more than a minute. That bastard was lucky he hadn't gone over there to punch his face in. What was he looking at? Why wasn't he in limbo with the corpse anymore? He should have stayed there. Getting a letter from Koenma telling him to attend this meeting had been out of the blue and unwanted. He'd been perfectly happy spending his years staring out the window of Raizen's tower. Just like his father before him, he'd stared out that window and pined for a woman that had been taken from him. Unable to carry on, to live a life without her. He'd known it would happen one day since she was still human. His mind remembered telling Tuguro that he looked forward to growing old with Keiko. That had been denied him when he'd been killed by Sensui to be brought back as a youkai. After returning to the Ningenkai, he'd kept his promise and married Keiko. He'd gotten to spend thirty-three years of married bliss with the woman he loved. Then she'd been taken away from him. A fatal car accident had killed the woman along with their only child. He had a grandchild but didn't know where he'd ended up or what had become of his family line. After Keiko's death he'd gone to Raizen's home. It was better to live that way. Every day was sat thinking, remembering and missing her.
Pushing a strand of aqua hair behind his ear, Itsuki smiled again. If the detective glared any harder he'd catch afire. Did the man still hold that much of a grudge? He did help Sensui but that had been so long ago. Since the man's death he'd kept to himself. So why the open animosity? Not that he really cared what the others thought of him. He'd come because he was curious, nothing more. Death did not scare him, he'd welcome it. His Sensui was gone. The corpse had long since rotted away to almost nothing. What had been left? The soul had long since left to wander aimlessly, leaving him alone. Maybe it was his punishment for wanting the man. To be denied for all eternity. He pulled off a piece of lint and tossed it to the ground. He didn't recognize many in the room but that wasn't surprising. They'd come from the Makai, he'd never really cared for it except when Sensui had died. Then he'd wanted to help the man get to the place so he could die with a clean slate. What could the Reikai prince possibly want with all of them?
Youko felt the man's stare on him and stiffened. Even after centuries the man unnerved him. It angered him to see the man still alive. He'd thought for sure his death plant had killed the bastard. Thinking back he remembered it slowly draining the man's precious blood. The blossom devouring his body, covering him up. The tournament employees had been the ones to remove the corpse. Had someone healed him or had he managed to survive on his own? Figures, he'd been too weak at the time to make a clean kill. A mistake that wouldn't happen again as soon as they left the room. This time the man would die. If he kept oggling him then it would be sooner. He knew the man didn't lust after him. No, the obsession went much deeper than that. The man had once been obsessed because of his beauty and power. Was it because the man didn't see it in himself? What he wouldn't give to take that smirk off his face. He had nothing to lose. His human family were all gone, death having claiming his human mother long ago. After the death of his step-brother he'd resumed his life as Youko. He wasn't the same bandit as before but had seen fit to become Youko Kurama. Going off on his own, away from all those he knew. It meant leaving his friends behind but it had been a choice he'd made without remorse.
Karasu could feel he was getting to the kitsune. It brought a small amount of amusement to him. The man had nothing to worry about as far as he was concerned. Taunting him with it was still enjoyable and helped to pass the time. The man had beaten him fairly and almost killed him in the process. Yes, Kurama was indeed a very special and bright youkai. Even greater than himself. Looking around he could feel that he was actually one of the weaker ones in the room. The thought didn't bother him. He might be weaker in power but they all were below him in one way or another. For a whole century after waking up nearly dead with a plant embedded on his chest, he'd been pissed. It had taken time to recover from the blow. In his anger he'd began killing those weaker than himself. Anger at the knowledge that he'd been outsmarted, that the man had gotten away. Knowing that he'd never get a change to redeem himself by defeating Tuguro. That had all been taken away from him.
The youngest one there stared out the window and was ready to get going. This was a waste of time but his father had made him comply. He had better things to do with his time. Like enjoy his life. As much as his father lusted for power and riches, he wanted other things. He still trained and became stronger but that wasn't all there was to life. He was over two hundred and a man by all rights. Why was he still having to follow his father's orders? What gave Enma the right to order them around and threaten them with death if they didn't obey? Just because he was the ruler of the Reikai didn't make him the boss. He'd grown up to resemble his father in most ways, minus the many horns and ears. The horn on his forehead was the only thing that marked his features. His hair was kept shoulder length, never understanding why his father preferred it long. Yomi's was all the way to his hips, while Shura liked his shorter. His violet eyes landed on the ex-detective and smiled. Seemed he wasn't the only one slacking on the training.
Koenma finally showed up and had a stack of files in his arms. Botan was quick on his heels looking very unhappy. Both had straight faces, worry lines creased the man's forehead. His eyes roamed over the occupants. At least none of them were dead yet. He'd hate to find replacements for any of them. Time was too short and this was nerve wrecking. His father had appointed him with this task. Pulling up one of the empty chairs he cleared his throat. "Before I start I will tell you now. I will NOT put up with any nonsense from any of you. Don't make me punish you because you can't behave civilized for a few minutes. I am not in the mood to put up with bullshit today. I know you are all wondering why I have summoned you here. In time I will get to that but I need to bring you up to speed to our current situation."
"Ten thousand years ago before any of you were born there was actually another deminsion that ran parallel with these four. To put it simply there is the Ningenkai or human world, the Makai or demon world, the Reikai or spirit world and there was the Netherworld which no longer exists as far as we are concerned. Back then there was another world, The Heru. This world was completely different from the other four. Our four existed together while this one was apart. Call it Hell if you may. It is where the darkest souls dwelled. Those that thrived on pain and hate. Souls that would make even Karasu there look like an angel. The ruler was known as Sendo, a ruthless god that thrived on suffering. There was no barrier then, so there was a problem of them consuming souls from the other four realms. You see Sendo got his power from the evil deeds of others. To make it simple you can think of him as the mythical being known as the devil, Satan, and there's a few other choice names for him. Only the Ningenkai still have tales of him and believe in his extistance. My father and a few others put up a barrier and banished him and his."
"Now that barrier is down but thanks to the long banishment, Sendo is weaker than a newborn babe. Which brings us to our current situation. There have many unplanned deaths with the souls missing. His minions are harvesting souls. Not just any souls either, those that match a specific profile. I'll just say those souls taken wouldn't have gotten a peaceful sentence. He is gathering souls of the damned in a matter of speaking. Now I'm sure half of you are wondering why you should give a damn. I'll be happy to give you that answer. Every one in this room is on that list. Each of you has commited a deadly sin." Koenma held up his hand when Yusuke was about to speak and silenced him. He didn't have time for arguements. No one in this room was a saint, least of all Yusuke.
"I got the files here and please pay attention." He opened the first one and looked over towards the boy in question. "Yusuke Urameshi, you have comitted the sin known as Sloth. If you aren't familiar with it then I'll explain it. As I will for all of you. I understand that you are upset over the loss of Keiko but time moves on. You have done nothing for the last century and half. Nothing but sit on your keister and have a pity party. You've become really lazy and pathetic. Your passion for living is gone, like I said pathetic, really. I'm ashamed that I had once thought you to be special."
"Shura, I'm surprised you are even still alive. If a Ningen endulged as much as you then they'd be obese or dead. You over indulge in many things; women, food and the list goes on. You take everything for granted. No doubt a side effect of Yomi spoiling you. You take without appreciating anything. You should be grateful that Yomi took the time to ejaculate in a jar instead of thinking the world owes you a living. You have comitted the sin known as Gluttony."
"Yomi, where to begin with you. I'm sure you are well aware of your sin. You once lost our eyesight and have gained more than most men could have ever accomplished with such a handicap. Still even though you thrived, you were unhappy. You wanted more then and you still do. Just this morning you were plotting on how to obtain more land and wealth. Never realizing that you already have a hundred men's share. Your sin is Greed."
"Itsuki, I find your sin the most distateful of all. During your run with Sensui you became infatuated with the man and hoped to become his lover. Even when it was obvious he'd never let you bend him over a table you kept that desire. Your sin was so strong that you even kept the man's corpse with you for years. Keeping him in your embrace, which in my opinion is disturbing. Your sin is Lust. Next time take a hint from Yomi and find a jar."
"Next, we have Youko Kurama. Well, what can I say about you besides you need to get your head out your ass. One would hope that after your human mother you'd have repented but the sin didn't leave you. Don't get me wrong you have reason to be proud of your accomplishments, everyone does. But you take it too far. If someone so much as downs your abilities you get angry. Believing in yourself is a good thing but you are too prideful. Needless to say your sin is Pride." The kitsune glared at him, he ignored it.
"Now on to Hiei. Don't dare glare at me, everyone gets a turn in this room. Your sin is Envy, let me explain why. All your life you have looked for a place to belong because of your birth. You envy those around you. You envied Kurama when he found a home with his human family, something you never had. You envied Kuwabara the love of a sister, since you were too frightened to tell Yukina the truth. You envied Yusuke because he had a woman that loved him regardless of what he was. You envied Mukuro of her power. Should I go on?" When no answer came he shut the file. "Good, I didn't think so. Now, you should have been happy with what you did have. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Unless you live in Yusuke's territory, the bastard lives in a sandbox."
"Last but not least Karasu. You are a walking sin and very disappointing. I'm not sure where you went wrong. I have looked through your file intensely. I would just say the hell with it and call you a sadistic bastard but I don't have the heart. You kill without remorse, hell you do it without thinking. Are you even capable of such a task? Or have you accidently combusted all your brain cells? The only thing I can say about you is that you hate. You are angry at the world for who knows what reason. Maybe your mother didn't breast feed you. Didn't get a tit as a child? You strike out at all with your anger. Either you have a serious complex problem or you need to get laid. Your sin is Wrath."
Botan, placed her hand over her mouth and bit her bottom lip. Koenma was sure in a mood today. Probably came from him being tensed and angry. She couldn't take her eyes off the faces around her. Everyone was in shock of the man's tirade and was just as speechless. The mirth of it all began bubbling up her throat and the first giggle came up as a hiccup. Eyes turned to her as she began to laugh.
"Shut up Botan. Your sin is stupidity. Now go find me the girl's file, I've seem to have left it on my desk." He handed each their files, he doubted he'd get them back. His suspicion was confirmed when Karasu set his ablaze, Yomi tossed his over his shoulder, Yusuke slapped his to the floor, Hiei threw his up in the air and sliced it in half with his katana, Shura handed his to Itsuki, Itsuki threw them back at Koenma and Kurama started flipping through his. "Truth hurts doesn't it."
"Now that you each know and can't argue. I'd like to continue. You are all prime targets of being soul-less. Don't even think for a minute you are too powerful to meet such a fate. These things are gods that have the power to absorb the soul if it has commited the sin in which it was born. You won't stand a chance as a empty shell. So, I've brought you all here to help me. You can either help fight against it or hope you don't die. If this isn't stopped then Sendo will become stronger and eventually cross over. With these sins still on your souls, you will be the first to perish. So either fight it now or die an agonizing death later. You aren't shit without your soul. Besides being allowed to live, my father is willing to reward you all."
"So what do we have to do?" Yusuke asked. Maybe he was guilty of it. He hadn't done anything lately. He'd help out if things were going to hell. Had he been wrong to mourn Keiko for so long? The last thing she said to him was that she wanted him to be happy. Yet he'd given up and hadn't cared anymore what he did.
"Well, we need to defeat the demi-gods first off. The only way they can be defeated is by someone that has commited the sin in which they are born and that person has to repent. That person in a matter of speaking defeats that sin. When the time comes for the confrontation the repentence must be geniune or there is no hope for victory. You must all know the virtue that opposes the sin in which you've commited. Now, when it comes time to destroy Sendo for good. That can only be done by a person that has not been tainted by these sins and has all of the opposing virtues. This person must have Humulity, Generosity, Love, Kindness, Self-control, Self-temperance and Zeal."
"Then we may as well kiss our asses goodbye. There is no such person in existance." Hiei wanted to kill the man for wasting their time. Why bother repenting if there was no one to kill the bastard behind it all? Did he think himself amusing?
"I beg to differ Hiei, just because you have faults doesn't mean everyone does. We have someone that actually is virtueous and pure. Give me a few more minutes and you will all be joining me for her revival. Almost two centuries ago a girl did exist that had a pure soul. Sad to say she gave her life for another. Before her family could have her creamated my father took her body. Her soul came here upon her death. We offered to revive her then, it would have been fair considering everything she'd done. Which is a long story I won't get into. The girl refused and said there was nothing left there for her. In a matter of speaking we put her on ice until she'd be needed again. So some of you will understand, it is the Guardian of the Shikon no Tama. It is a human miko with incredible purifaction powers. Soon, we will be placing her soul back in her body. Unlike you asshats she will no doubt be glad to help others."
Botan came back in the room. The men all turned to glare at her. She almost ran from the room. A few of them she knew wouldn't hurt her but then again how could she trust Karasu not to send a bomb her way. He wouldn't care if she was forced to walk around without an arm or leg. She handed him the file he'd requested, "Your father said to inform you that the girl's body is ready. So whenever you are ready."
"Very well, before we head to the chamber. I will ask now if any of you are not willing to aid us?" He knew his normal three would help out but the other four he had doubt about. Shockingly, none of them said they wanted out. Probably wanted to prove their strength. They weren't juming into it to save anyone but themselves. He sighed, they had to start somewhere. If they were capable of caring about themselves maybe they could care about others.
Next Chapter: Kagome is revived and introductions all around.... Please read and review.
