CHAPTER ONE
Inuyasha watched Kagome as she and Sango prepared their measly dinner. They were all going to starve if things didn’t change course, and soon. The farmers’ harvests were small, because of a late frost that damn near ruined all the crops. Add to that a recent drought, and you had a recipe for disaster. They, the village included, were all surviving on small rations of rice, and whatever meat they could catch. It wasn’t much, but it would have to do.
Inuyasha was pulled from his melancholy thoughts, as he saw Kagome straighten, and wipe her hands on her hakama. A wave of guilt flashed over him, although Kagome never blamed him, he still felt responsible. It happened two years ago now, but it seemed like yesterday.
Kagome was going home to get supplies, and take her finals. She said she would be finished school, then they could finish the jewel and destroy Naraku. They were having one of their usual arguments over Kagome returning to her time. Inuyasha was complaining that she just got back, and Kagome was trying to patiently explain that she’d be able to spend longer periods of time in the feudal era. So, naturally, Inuyasha ate dirt, and Kagome jumped in the well, only this time…it didn’t work. There was no swirling light, no floating sensation…
Kagome landed on the hard ground, and felt her right ankle snap. Inuyasha was brushing the dirt off his clothes when he heard Kagome scream in pain. Panic seized him, and within seconds he was at the bottom of the well. His gaze locked with hers, terror quickly replacing pain.
“W…why didn’t it work?” She whispered.
“I…I don’t know!”
“Inuyasha. The well…it’s…closed!” Tears welled up in her eyes. “I can’t go home.”
His heart clinched at her words, he drew her into his embrace. Trying to reassure her everything would be
fine…they would find a way to make the well work again.
“Kagome. I’m sorry. I promise I will do everything I can to get you back to your family.”
Two years. And still they had found no explanation as to why the well wouldn’t let Kagome go home. Inuyasha sighed, rose to his feet and joined his friends around the fire. Kagome smiled at Inuyasha as she handed him his rice. He gave her a little half-smile, graciously accepting his meal.
They talked as they ate, and laughed. Inuyasha admired Kagome’s strength, her ability to adapt and her accepting nature. But he knew…he knew her. She hid her pain well. Tonight, though, he had news for her, about the well, but he didn’t want to get her hopes up. It had been too long, he figured she must have resigned herself to making a new life in his time.
When they were finished dinner, Inuyasha approached Kagome as she was rolling out her well worn sleeping bag. He stood there watching her for a second., then shook his head clearing is thoughts.
“Kagome?”
“Yes, Inuyasha?”
“Can I talk to you for a second?”
She looked nervously at Inuyasha. It was usually not a good thing when Inuyasha was patient, and civil.
“Uhh…sure.”
“Well, I was talking with one of the leaders in the next village, and he told me about this legend of the bone-eaters well…a theory really”
Kagome shook her head.
“Don’t…”
“Kagome…”
“Inuyasha.” She said sharply. “It’s been two years. We’ve tried everything. Maybe someday it will open again…but I rather not think about it…”
“Listen!”
Her brow furrowed, and her left eyebrow rose in irritation.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered as his whole body sagged. “I really am.”
She took a deep breath, and sighed. “I know. Stop apologizing. It wasn’t your fault.”
“I know!”
He looked at her for a brief moment. Realizing for the first time that she was not the same frightened little girl he met four years ago. No longer naïve. She was still very kind, and cared for others, trying to take care of everyone. But her years in the feudal era, battling the cruelty of demons and humans, and being away from her family…well, it seemed to turn her bitter, and less forgiving. She was a very lethal shot, and usually if a demon crossed her it meant death. Not surprising, she was also becoming proficient with a sword, thanks to Inuyasha.
“Look, it’s been a long day…” She began.
“Dammit, Kagome, listen to me!”
“No! You listen Inuyasha! I told you I DIDN’T want to hear it! Leave me the hell alone!” She took off towards the river.
He stood there looking after her, then looked over at Sango, Miroku and Shippou…who looked away as soon as they were caught.
“What?” He growled. He stomped away after Kagome.
Kagome sat on the bank of the river, watching the moonlight move in ripples across the water. She heard a twig snap, and looked over her shoulder as Inuyasha approached. He sat down beside her.
“I’m…”
“Don’t say it… I’ll sit you into next week.” She teased. She bumped against him with her shoulder. “No. I’m sorry, Inuyasha. You were only trying to help.”
He shook his head. “I just want you to be happy.”
She laughed. “Aww, Inuyasha, you’re not going all soft on me, are you?” She glanced over to see he was smirking.
“Cut it out, wench.”
She quickly reached up and tweaked his ear.
“Oi! What was that for!”
“For the wench comment!” She playfully punched him in the arm.
“And that?!”
“For asking!”
They stared at each other for a second, then broke out laughing. They continued giggling for a few minutes. Then fell silent.
Kagome stared at the moon. “Do you know what today is?”
“No.”
“It’s Souta’s 14th birthday.” She sighed. "I miss them."
He looked down at her hands folded in her lap. He reached over and took one of her hands, squeezing it lightly. Their eyes met, and he could see the tears burning her eyes. But he knew she wouldn’t let them fall. She was much too strong, and stubborn. He put his arm around her shoulders and kissed her temple.
They sat there in the silence and looked up at the Milky Way. Inuyasha was furious at the way fate had used this…woman…his best friend. It wasn’t fair to ask so much from one person. Inuyasha promised himself that he would do anything to protect Kagome, and keep her happy.
