The Past That Haunts

Disclaimer: I don't own or profit from Inuyasha or Yuyu Hakusho or any of it's characters. This disclaimer will go for all future chapters contained within this story.

A/N: This is a Inuyasha/Yuyu Hakusho crossover. The pairings are Kagome/Yusuke and Sango/??? I will be taking a poll on who to pair Sango with. Just as long as it isn't Hiei, my muse won't allow it. Reviews are welcome and flames will be ignored. I'd also like to thank Misty for being there for me and listening to me drabble on about my newest plot bunnies.

Warnings: The story will contain angst, some character death, and possible rape.

Chapter One

A pleased sigh echoed in the small cave. No creatures stirred within miles of the distant mountain top. It was as if life had ceased in that small section of the woods. With good reason, inside lay something dark and evil. On first glance the child would appear harmless, yet emotionless. All would smile until their souls became lost to them. Over five centuries and the child's clothing hadn't changed, neither had her age. The long white hair swayed as she walked around the prone form laying upon the ground.

Over twenty years ago she'd finally found him in the city. Much to her despair he hadn't recognized her upon sight. Not that it had mattered then, it was just a tiny setback. Five centuries ago her master had been purified along with the Shikon Jewel. Fools hadn't realized what they were doing but she did. His soul had been purified, allowing it to enter the after life with a clean slate. All she needed to do was wait for the day he was reborn. What the hanyou and miko didn't realize that the power of the jewel fused with his soul upon death. Yes, it had made him stronger. From afar she'd watched him grow up through the use of her mirror. It gave her a small amount of pleasure to watch as youkai flocked to him. Some nights she would hear him speak to himself, asking why. Her master had been reborn but without his memories. It had caused problems when he'd been appointed dectective of the Ningenkai. Ironic that HE of all people would be it's protector. Naturally youkai would flock to him and that he'd be so powerful. What else was to be expected when his soul had fused with such an immense power?

For ten years she watched him plot his revenge on humans. A spark of her old master had returned finally. She didn't dare risk approaching him. She'd heard enough to know that he would die soon from illness. Then she would make her move upon him. Koenma's new lackey had somehow managed to kill him in the Makai. It made things difficult for her, that Itsuki made things hard for her. She should have killed him when she'd had the chance. That man had been lusting after her master. Though she should thank Itsuki for a few things; like keeping the soul and body attached. It made reviving him that much easier. Unlike that dead miko, Kikyou, he'd be flesh and blood.

Finding where the two had been holding up had cost her precious years. The fool had actually been holding onto the corpse in an alternate universe. The sad man had began to cry when her spell was cast, taking the body from his loving embrace. It had taken alot from her mirror, summoning a body from another realm. Hard work had paid off, he was with her once more. Another hour and he'd rise with all memory of his former glory. But this time he'd be perfect, thanks to that silly hanyou and his bitch.

"It took alot of effort to find you again. Master, soon you will rise and reign once more. Centuries I have waited for you to return. I knew this day would come. Come to me, my lord." She knealt down next to the corpse, feeling the magic working. His appearance was slightly altered but that couldn't be helped. His appearance was that of his original human form, that of Onigumo. He would arise human but with the power of a God. Immortal and beautiful to behold, all hers. "Rise once more, rise Naraku!"

"SANGO!!! We're going to be late. You're worse than Kagome, sheesh." Souta stomped his foot impatiently. After a year home Kagome had gotten lazier it seemed. Neither girl did much of anything but mope around the house. Mother said to give them time to adjust but how much time did they need? Even he was tired of hearing his sister crying late at night. A tear hadn't been shed in over two months, not that he'd heard or seen. There was a few details that he hadn't been told, just that everyone else was dead.

They were headed to do some shopping this morning. Summer vacation had started for him, Kagome had graduated a week ago. He was surprised she'd managed to pull it off with all the school she'd missed. Kagome was alot smarter than most people gave her credit for. There was also the thought of Inuyasha holding her down. The hanyou had died in the last battle, so had some guy named Miroku. Souta had never met him but seemed Sango had been in love with the guy.

"Hold your horses, the store isn't going anywhere." Kagome slipped on her sandals to match her blue sundress. The weather was already getting hot and steamy. To make matters worse the air conditioner was broken in the car. Yet Souta was demanding to go this morning for a few summer supplies. She nor Sango felt like going but they needed a few things also. Momma and Grandpa were gone for a month, up north visiting family. So if Souta wanted to go shopping it was her duty to take him. Sometimes it sucked being the elder child.

"Yeah well, you aren't getting any younger either. So if i was you I'd hurry it up or have you not noticed that new grey hair." Souta snatched a stray strand that'd been casually hanging out of the braid. He took off hearing her yelp of pain, then curse. That would get her moving some, now to just get Sango in gear.

Sango already had her shoes on before coming downstairs. Maybe shopping would help take their minds off a few things. A year had gone past since their return. She accepted that Miroku was now dead and forever lost to her. Same as Kagome was trying to do with Inuyasha. Both men had died for them and to save countless others. Mrs. Higurashi kept telling her that it was better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Sango knew she was speaking from experience since Kagome's father had died, yet it didn't help the ache in her heart. Nothing she did would bring her houshi back. Remembering him was all she had left to cling to. Why should she move on?

Everyday was much like the one before, a day without him. Kagome seemed to be holding up better on the surface. Yet Sango knew that the miko was in more pain. Even if the whole group had known Inuyasha loved the girl, he'd never spoken the words. It should have been the same but it had left a hole nothing could fill. Knowing and hearing it was two different things. She believed if Inuyasha had just spoken the words then Kagome would be able to heal faster. Knowing someone loved you gave a certain amount of comfort. Hearing meant that the person speaking the words not only knew it themselves but accepted it as well. Miroku had only told her once of his love, it was enough. He'd proposed to her, she had known his feelings without doubt. Deep down Kagome still carried the smallest amount of doubt about how Inuyasha had truelly felt.

She was just glad that the well had accepted her for some reason. The final battle had passed leaving just the two of them and Keade alive to mourn the dead. After the burial service Kagome had stated she was going to try and go home. Sango had pleaded with her to stay, having no one left. Keade had been the one to suggest using the now released beads from around Inuyasha's neck. Kagome wanted to take them as a rememberance anyways. They spoke for several hours debating on what to do then said their goodbyes. Inuyasha had gone through the well many times without a jewel shard in his possession. Even Kagome had passed through without shards before. Keade's belief was that it was Kagome's soul that had allowed her to pass through. With Inuyasha it was the one thing that connected him to Kagome's soul.

Now that she was here in the future, she was still adjusting. Kagome was talking about getting a place of their own soon, away from annoying little brothers. When the miko turned eighteen some kind of money had been left to her from her father. They'd have to get a job not long after moving in, which bothered her. She didn't know how to 'work' in this day and age. How was she going to be able to mingle? But that was a worry left for another day. Yells could be heard from outside, Souta was being punished.

"You really shouldn't eat that sis." Souta leaned back in his chair smiling. He had actually enjoyed their morning out, now it was time for lunch. He'd conned them into buying him some extra clothes and two music cds. Only a slight guilt remained knowing they were both in a gloomy mood. Seeing him smile gave them a small amount of happiness, which meant giving him what he wanted. Like his meal, nothing but junk food. He was about to munch down on french fries and a greasy hamburger. Sango had ordered a salad to eat while Kagome had went the total opposite with a large banana split. "That's going to go straight to your ass."

"Watch your mouth, you little brat. I'll eat what I want!" Kagome grabbed her spoon and dug into the high calorie treat. Sango eyed her from the side with a grimace. She was craving something sweet while shopping and now was going to endulge herself. Why care if she put on five pounds or even a hundred? There was no one she wanted to impress, not here atleast. She'd just have Sango go on a run with her later to burn it off. Looks weren't everything, that much she knew. She'd been at her prime and she wasn't bad looking, yet it hadn't won her the man she wanted. No matter the ending she would never have had a future with Inuyasha.

The hanyou had always given her a hard time. All the name calling, put-downs and being made to feel inadequate but she still loved him. It had been his way of showing his emotions. The time she'd spent with him she'd cherish forever. It didn't matter if he would have chosen Kikyou in the end. Knowing that he loved her helped some but she wished for once she could have heard it. To hear those three words pass his lips. She knew Sango felt the same as herself. No matter how mean and irratiting Inuyasha had been or how leacherous and horny Miroku had been; they'd both give anything to have them back. After all no one was perfect.

Sango felt her stomach pitch as Kagome started eating the mess. Every once in a while Kagome got in a mood where she'd eat alot. Sango wasn't sure where the girl put it all. She wouldn't be able to fit back into her tiajiya outfit if she ate that much. Which reminded her of the suit Kagome was wanting her to wear tomorrow. Souta said it was called a bikini, to her it looked like the designer got into a fight with Kouga. The color was the only thing she'd recommend, a bright red. The rest of it barely covered her breasts and only them. The bottom piece covered the important things but was held together by strings tied on the sides. Kagome swore that all the girls wore clothing just like it. Kagome's bikini was just as bad but came in a dark blue color. Sango would make sure to keep one of those long shirts on tomorrow.

Souta saw he wasn't going to get another word out of either one. They were being silent as usual. He went back to his meal for now. The french fries were great but someone had put onions on his burger. He hated onions! While he was in the process of picking the offending things off he noticed the two couples sitting down at the table next to them. One of the girls was really cute but short. Shame she was seated next to a real ugly dude. The other couple was seated almost behind his sister looking non too happy. Hopefully they wouldn't get too loud. Trying to fix his food he pretended to ignore the strange couple.

"Leave it to you to make us late and miss the movie Yusuke! For once would it kill you to get to one of our dates on time? Not only did you leave me waiting but Yukina as well. Try to be more considerate, think of someone but yourself for once."

"I already told you I was sorry. I had to run an errand for my mother okay. She was too wasted to make it to the store herself. Next time just plan a later movie."

Kagome cringed hearing the arguement begin. Of course, her and Sango had noticed the boy sit down, he had youkai energy. She sensed it along with the ex-taijiya. He seemed to be harmless enough, out on a date with a human girl. The other male wasn't an ordinary human and his date was also youkai. Nothing for her to concern herself over. Definitely not worth quiting her fine meal. Her ears picked up the guy telling the girl once more that he was sorry for being late. 'Okay, he's sorry now please shut up already.' The girl obviously wasn't a mind reader because she continued to nag at the guy. Soon Kagome knew of every date he'd been late to within the last two months. Atleast the guy had shown up and not ran off with another girl. His apology sounded sincere enough, why wouldn't she shut the hell up already? Seriously, people were trying to enjoy lunch around them.

Sango was listening as well but wasn't letting it bother her. She knew exactly what was going through her best friend's mind. That girl was lucky she had someone. Not only did he seem truelly sorry for being late but one could hear the love in his voice. Besides constantly yelling wasn't going to help the situation any. The girl could be stuck with a man that ran around on her or someone abusive. Being a few minutes late was nothing to get pissy over.

"Look Keiko I'm sorry. We can see the movie this weekend, I'll take off work just so we can hit an early show. How does that sound? You know I love you."

"You can't keep doing this. Once again I am always waiting on you. When are you going to stop putting yourself above others?"

Kagome slammed her spoon down on the table. The girl was still ranting on about it after he was trying to make it up to her and claimed how he felt. Where was a muzzle when you needed one? The girl was lucky she had a man that loved her, she should appreciate it. Instead of getting upset over something silly like a movie. The guy could be running around with his dead girlfriend. Thoughts of Inuyasha flooded her mind. She'd still loved him and forgiven him for doing those things. Souta jumped at the noise and Sango shook her head. Kagome stood up fast enough to shove her chair back. It landed with a loud wham against the tile. "Would you shut up already?!" She turned towards the now silent couple and spoke loud enough for them and a few other tables to hear. "You should be ashamed of yourself. First off you are in a public place. NONE of us give a rat's ass about your problems. Second, who gives a damn if he's a few minutes late. With all the bitching you do, you're lucky he shows up at all. I sure the hell wouldn't. He said he was sorry and meant it. You should count your blessings that you even have someone that loves you. Some of us aren't that lucky. So stop being such a bitch and shut up so we can enjoy our meal."

"You tell em Sis, we don't wanna hear that shit!" Souta smiled seeing some of Kagome's old spark back. He tried to ignore the cursing she'd just done. So she had needed to relieve some pent of anger and the bitchy girl had provided her with an opportunity. Her head spun around to glare at him. "Oops, I mean yeah we don't wanna hear that stuff." He bowed his head knowing he'd be eating soap later.

Sango saw the other girl's face begin to turn red with embarrasment and anger from Kagome's outburst. If a fight broke out her bet was on Kagome. True she wasn't a skilled warrior but the girl was tough and had been through alot. Lunch was ruined now, Kagome wouldn't sit down again much less eat. She had to get them out of there before all hell broke loose. "Come on Kagome, let's get out of here. I've lost my appetite." She could see the tears welling up in the miko's eyes. Thoughts of Inuyasha had to be bothering her. She grabbed the bags, hurrying the best she could. "Come on Souta, we are leaving."

Souta groaned when Sango escorted his shaking sister away from the table and couple. Great now they would be going home instead of by the movie store. He'd been hoping to rent the new scary movie tonight. So much for his plans of staying up, vegging out on junk food while being scared out of his wits. He wouldn't blame his sister for it. No, she was hurting and had gotten upset because some people have no manners. Airing their problems out in the open, reminding others of their own. He turned to the girl staring at Kagome's departing back. "Thanks alot! I hope you're happy now. You made my sister upset and you've ruined my day."

Next Chapter: A day at the beach and someone wakes.....

Plus, an evil Naraku in Sensui's body, what else could a girl ask for??? Please read and review.
