Obieru

S/D: Yeah, I totally own Inuyasha. Which is why I’m posting on a fanfiction website. ‘Cause the real author’s a fan, ain’t she?

One-shot: What must it be like… to have only your nightmares to keep you company in the night?

Obieru: to have a bad dream

He slipped into the shower, naked as the day he was born. Sweat slicked his body, his muscles still screaming sweet release. Hot water flattened his hair, plastering the dark ends to his back, his hips. Soapy bubbles washed away the red staining his flesh, flaking it away like a layer of dirt on a statue of marble. In the darkness, he sighed. It was unreal, it was a mistake. In the darkness, he didn’t feel so bad, he wasn’t torn apart by his inner demons. Here, in the shower stall, water pouring upon him, he was alive, alone, nothing more. He owned nothing, feared nothing, and loved nothing. Time ceased to exist. The only reminder of his life was the fall of water on his flesh, the heat that steamed around him. He was himself, nothing more.

Silent footfalls were testament to his entrance. The door creaked as it opened.

Once upon my world was bright.
But back then I had you; you were my light.

A sliver of light fell upon her bed, exposing her to the violence of the world. The shaft skittered over her face, climbing across her bed like a lazy lover, licking her flesh heatedly before lying beside her in a wait for satisfaction. Jealousy tightened his chest. The light didn’t see anything except the lids of her beautiful eyes, once filled with smiles and joy, even tears, now just as dark as his soul. The light lazily wound its fingers through her dark hair, those silken locks that once waved in the wind, fluttering behind her as she giggled, laughed played. Here they looked so limp, so dead. Dead.

The word shot another pang through the cavity he called his heart.

Dreaming dreams of things to be.
Dreaming of when you’ll come back to me.

The light betrayed him. In the dark he could not see her stillness. He could close himself in, hide in the shadows. He could deny his senses – hearing silence, no breath – smelling the rotting decay of lifelessness – as long as he didn’t have to see it. He could not bear to take in the sight of her. His hands came unwillingly to his face; he would rid himself of this error in his moment of mortification. Claws. Stained a brilliant red. The blood he could not remove. He could not forget the reminder, the delicious sensation as they sunk into flesh, tearing life and limb. Stained for the night? He was tainted for life. His knees trembled and his eyes saved him the pain of suffering blindness as they blurred with a foreign liquid. It was hot, filling his eyes with a tempest. The drops fell down his face, cooling instantly, chilling him where he felt he could not get colder.

Kagome.
Forgive me.

He took in a breath, his chest heaving violently as his eyes snapped open wide. He sat up abruptly, flinging sweat from his face. Sweat? No. His hands raked his cheeks. Not sweat. He furiously rubbed at his weakness, those dastardly eyes that dared betray him. He fought to gain his feet, fighting the pain of his body as it argued to give into gravity.

“Inuyasha! Dinner!”

“…”

“It’s rraaaammmeeen!”

“Keh! Bribe me with noodles, will you, woman!?”

“I’ll give it to Shippo-chan!”

“I’m coming! And if you give as much as one scrap of my dinner to that worthless, scrawny little brat of a kitsune, I swear I’ll-“

“Owsari.”

“You realize I hate you…”

“And I adore you enough to make you eat dirt and ramen.”

Don’t you ever change that…

A/N: Written long ago… Seems like forever.
