What Storms may Bring

This is a different take on the episode "The Girl Sesshomaru Loved". Arena is another traveller from the future who joins Kagome and InuYasha's group, however, she also attracts the attention of a certain dog demon.

Disclaimer: Obviously I have no connection with any of the characters in InuYasha. I do not own any of the characters created by Rumiko Takahashi. Only Arena and her special powers are my own creation. As I've said I am not profitting from this story, rather just trying to get some writing experience.

Note: Arena is pronounced A-rey-na

Chapter I:

The sky was covered with dark and threatening clouds. As the tall figure stood breathing heavily in the humid air, his breath adding vapour to the already swirling mist, the clouds began to open up. The rain came down in torrents, like a cleansing storm after a grave battle. The figure breathed a shaken breath and limped towards a large and ancient tree. He slowly sank to the ground at the base leaning his wounded body against the trunk. The pain overcame him now. The blood that was pouring out seemed to carry with it his life’s energy. He closed his eyes as the mist enveloped him, wondering what the future might hold. His last thoughts before he passed out was the slow sound of the rain that fell around him, and the scent of roses.

The young woman watched the rain pour down. While staring out from the safe havens of a covered roof the rain washed away the topsoil with the newly planted crops. The villagers would have to seek a home elsewhere this year or they would starve. They were already packing up their meagre belongings. She didn’t want to go with them. She didn’t belong with them anyway. They never really treated her as one of their own, despite all the things she had done for them. They took advantage of her special talent and scorned her in return. She peered through the foggy glass. She stopped musing and focussed here eyes. She had seen something limping through the bush. It looked like someone was hurt quite badly. The girls heart went out to the poor rain drenched creature.

She scrambled through the brush looking for the footsteps of the injured creature. The woman was drenched from head to toe before she had taken two steps from the building, and now the rain was so thick it was impeding her vision. Then she saw it. The trail of blood. She followed it to a large tree and saw the figure at the base of the trunk. He looked as if he were about to pass out. As she looked at him the wind beat the rain about her. Even the thick canopy could not serve as a shelter.

“Are you alright?” she said to the man. “Are you the one I saw wandering the forest hurt?”

She was confused. She was expecting a creature not a man. The light was dim, such as the hour just before dawn. She could not see any of his features except that he had strangely regal clothes, and incredibly long white hair. In a flash of lightning she noticed that he had fainted. From what? He must be badly wounded. She needed to get him indoors so she could use a light to find out where he was hurt. She tried to put her arms around his chest and lug him away from the trunk.

“What the….?” she tore her arms back away from the hurt man.

“What is this sticky liquid? Could it be blood?” another flash of lightning showed her hands completely covered in the man’s blood.

The rain started to wash the blood away as she waited for another bolt of lightning so show his injury.

The bolt came. The girl was shocked to see that the man held in his right hand a severed arm, one that was obviously his own left arm.

“By Apollo,” she thought, “this will be a hard one to heal. But if I am to do any good we must be in a safe place. I need to get him indoors.”

“Sir, I am very sorry but I need to leave you for a few minutes. I cannot possibly carry you back to my hut by myself. I need to find help. But I promise I will return for you.” The girl dashed off through the bush to find one of the work animals left behind by the villagers. The villagers had deserted more than the girl. She quickly returned with a large donkey.

“How on earth am I going to do this” she muttered.

She put her shoulder under the man’s right arm and wrapped her arms around his waist and heaved up. Sacred gods, he was so heavy! Must have been all that armour. She noticed he had two swords. What kind of bloody maniac would need two swords? she thought to herself about the added weight they held as she struggled with him. She lowered him down onto the donkey and breathed a sigh of relief. She hadn’t thrown her back out yet.

The girl led the donkey back to the empty hut. The fire had gone out long ago, and so it was cool inside, but at least it was dry. Getting the man off the donkey proved to be slightly more difficult. Luckily the donkey was very obliging and came and stopped near the mat. The girl once again gritted her teeth and heaved him onto the floor and rolled him onto the mattress.

“Thank you kind donkey, you may go back to the barn if you like. I’m afraid I don’t have any good food for you here. Now I just need some light.”

She fished around the room and lit a small lamp. The hurt man was still unconscious and was deathly pale. The girl shook him.

“Sir, I need you to wake up. I cannot heal you if you are asleep” she said to him. “Damn, he’s out cold. I guess I will need to force him awake.” She started to light a fire and prepared a strong herbal tea made from wintergreen and eucalyptus.

“If this doesn’t wake him up, he might as well be dead” she muttered. “Hmm, I really need to stop talking to myself. Even I am starting to believe I am going crazy!” She tilted his head up and poured the liquid down his throat. Much of the tea dribbled down his chin, but enough went in his mouth. He woke up with a huge gasp and started coughing.
