Cherry Blossoms

Chapter One: Birthday

It was a beautiful spring day. There was not a single cloud in the sky and the wind blew the cherry blossoms ever so calmly. It was quiet and the forest seemed deprived of all inhabitants, except for one person.

It was a young lady, whom seemed to be in her late teens; her silky black hair flowed softly in the wind. If a simple passerby would have seen her they would have instantly thought they had spotted a goddess from the heavens above.

Despite all her beauty she was no goddess. To tell the truth she was a demon, daughter of the mighty wind sorceress and the proud ruler of the western lands.

She sat peacefully on a log, trying to clear her mind. She was turning seventeen today, and so far it had brought her nothing but grief. She was more or less a princess, and now that she was turning of age she would have to begin her studies, so that on her eighteenth birthday she would be able to take her place as lady of the western lands. That fact alone disquieted her.

She had never wanted to ruler, she just wanted to be free, to be herself. The life of a lord was no life for her, but her father would not listen to her pleas. The fact of the matter was she was the only heir to the land.

Well that was not entirely true. Her uncle, a hanyou, had a daughter a year younger than herself. Unfortunately her father would not allow the daughter of a hanyou and a human to run the land, no matter how strong and capable she maybe.

She sighed, for she saw no way out of her fate.

“Lady Mitsuki” She slowly turned her slender neck to see her father’s vassal, a toad like creature, come striding up to her out of breath.

“Jaken, what brings you?” She asked even though she already knew the answer.

“Your father summons you, Milady.” He piped out once her regained is breath.

Sighing, Mitsuki slowly stood and left before the toad could say anymore. She did not want to see her father, she wished she could just run away, but deep down she knew she could not. ‘After all, look where running got my mother.” She gave a weak laugh. Her mother was ultimately killed by her late master, an evil manipulative demon.

Kagura was her name, a beautiful wind sorceress. She had betrayed her master was killed for it soon after Mitsuki’s birth.

Mitsuki walked through the dense forest that lead to the large mansion of her fathers, but before she reached the front gates she had a change of heart. Why give into her fate so easily? Fate can always be changed. Making up her mind, she turned and took of at a full run towards the north, where her aunt and uncle lived. In times like these she always found comfort with them, and besides their daughter was her best friend. She could tell her anything.

It was about dusk by the time she reached their small house, which was situated near the sacred tree. By the smell of things they had just begun to eat dinner. She felt bad for barging in but she had no other choice. Slowly she walked to their door before knocking on the soft wood.

The sounds of chairs scrapping the floor and foots steps could be heard for within. Moments later the door opened to reveal a man in his early thirties with jet black hair, tied back neatly with a ridden. From the looks of him one would guess he was a monk.

“Oh, hello Miroku, are you visiting as well?” Inuyasha soon joined him at the door. “ Uncle!” Mitsuki flung herself at him, giving him a hug.
“What are you doing here?” He asked, smiling at his niece. Soon everyone was up from the table to greet her. “Hello Aunt Kagome, Hitomi…” She said as she caught sight of a lady with jet black hair, who was her aunt, and a girl not much younger than her with dark gray hair who could have only been Hitomi.

“Sorry if I am intruding on dinner…”

“O nonsense, feel free to come and join us.” Kagome said as she ushered her over to the table. Everyone soon followed, as plate of food was soon put in front of Mitsuki. The smell made her mouth water as she savored every bit of Kagome’s cooking.

“So how is everything been going?” Hitomi asked.

“Horrible, I can’t stand all the studying and work, daddies putting me through. Can’t he see I have no intention of becoming the ruler? I have no choice in the matter. Its no fair, why can’t Rin take over, she’s older and smarter than I am. Daddy lets her do anything she wants, I swear her favors her.”

“Hush Mitsuki, you father loves you, he just wants what’s best.” Kagome shook her finger disapprovingly.

She nodded her headed and looked around the table. That’s when she noticed it. “Where’s Sango?”

“Oh she had a job in a town close to here. She took Shori with her, so he could get some more experience.” Miroku explained.

“So is Shori becoming a demon slayer as well?” Shori was Miroku and Sango’s son. He was a year older than Mitsuki and had inherited his father’s good looks. Mitsuki fancied him, he had always been nice to her and they had grown quite closer. The only problem was her father. He greatly disliked humans and disapproved of her relationship with him, even if it was currently platonic.

Hitomi smiled knowingly. “Yeah, to bad he wasn’t here to see you. You know he always talks about you.”

This got Mitsuki’s attention. “He… He does… I mean not that I care or anything.”

Everyone laughed, they all knew she had a crush on him. They even knew that he harbored feeling for her as well. If only Sesshomaru could except it.

The rest of dinner was spent laughing and eating. Mitsuki felt as if she had returned home after a long trip, she really needed this. But in truth she knew that this was only the calm before the storm. He father would surly find her, and when he did she would have to face his wrath.
