Chapter 1
Shadows jumped around the firelight as the group of shard hunters settled in for the night. Finishing off the remains of their meal in the fading remainder of the sunset, the group discussed the day’s events. There was a rumor going around the in villages they had passed through that the western lands were at war. Concluding their talk they nestled in for a well-earned nights sleep. Curling up in her sleeping bag with an already inert Shippo, Kagome fell into a deep slumber.
----------------------
Blazing purple light streamed from her fingertips as she loosed an arrow from her bow. In a speeding tentacle on a path aimed directly for her friends, the miko’s power filled arrow hit home. Naraku screamed in inconceivable agony as the purification arrow ripped through his limb.
As she attempted to nock another arrow she felt a clammy tentacle wrap itself around her ankle and yank her feet out from under her. Momentarily unable to focus her eyes she struggled to free her confined extremity. She heard a scream and instantly realized it was Sango’s. Eyes focusing she could now see her best friend impaled on a broken tree branch and the lecherous hoshi crumpled on the ground below.
Still fighting the grip on her leg, she felt herself lifted into the air. Hanging upside down, she flailed helplessly as she was carried closed to the one she had fought for so long. Currently eyeing her with a sadistic grin, she was now close enough to feel his fetid breath against her skin. Her mind was racing as he ever so slowly dragged his tongue across her battle worn cheek; only one thought came to her mind.
‘Where is Inu Yasha?’
-------------------------
She awoke with a start, sweating profusely, the sheer terror of her nightmare gradually evaporated from her waking mind. She looked at the sky and judged that it was early morning maybe about 5am. Unable to shake the lasting effects of her bad dream, she decided that a bath was in order. Quietly and carefully she rose as to not wake the sleeping fox youkai, then padded away from the camp on silent feet.
Walking through the almost dark, looking for a place to bathe Kagome thought she heard hushed voices. Straining to hear she wandered on in the direction of the perceived voices. Creeping from behind a tree she stopped dead in her tracks as she happened on two individuals sharing a lovers embrace. The enormity of what she was viewing finally claimed her when she realized the persons she was seeing were none other than her beloved Inu Yasha and the former bearer of her soul, Kikyou.
Kagome ran, she ran as fast as her legs could carry her. The surrounding forest passed by in an indistinct blur, possibly because of her speed, mostly because of her tears. She sobbed her way through brightening forest spurred on by what she had witnessed. The end of her dream came back to her, with her words ‘Where is Inu Yasha?’ Sobbing harder she could guess where he was, being held in Kikyou’s embrace, while she met her end. She wouldn’t allow that to happen. She wouldn’t give him the chance, on she ran.
The sky was darkening overhead; she didn’t know how long she had been running for. She groped her way in the blackness, walking now too exhausted to run any longer. She bore scrapes from her trials, mostly superficial, one particularly deep cut on her forearm. She didn’t remember when it happened, how long ago; she was numb now her tears had long been dried.
Struggling through the darkness and brush she took a step and tumbled forward as her foot connected with nothing but air. Searing pain in her left arm and right leg, blurred her vision as she reached the bottom of the steep ravine.
Several sharp intakes of breath later, she tried to right herself. Pain shot through her left arm almost causing her to blackout, but she managed to get to her feet. Her right leg now displayed a gash from her right knee to her inner thigh, the wound bleed freely.
She swayed like a tree in a breeze and managed to continue on. Stumbling frequently she only managed to make it slightly father before collapsing to her knees. A flash of scarlet crossed her vision as she slipped into unconsciousness and her last thoughts were of only one person. “Inu Yasha”
Kagome awoke to the sound of raspy voices. Where her eyes focused she was shocked to realize she was lying near a fire surrounded by what appeared to be snake demons. Dressed in all scarlet battle garb, they had the physical shape of a human but she could see their rough scaled hands and smooth hairless heads reflecting in the firelight. They had no noses that she could make out and their eyes shone with the predatory yellow seen in reptiles.
Her staring was quickly interrupted, “Ssswoman your awakesss,” one of the snakemen purred. Suddenly all eyes were on her, a predatory gaze that chilled her to the core. Struggling to get to her feet the broken arm hanging limply at her side, a chain wrapped around her ankle prevented her from rising. Looking back at the owners of the gaze that had frightened her she now saw something else in their eyes, hunger.
