Chapter 1
No one wanted to talk to him. He was the little boy who hated everyone and everything. If you talked to him, he would either ignore you and pretend that you did not exist, or glare at you with a stare that would send shivers down your spine. It was that simple. All the kids knew that. He was left to brood in his own little world of loneliness and pit of darkness. No one wanted to talk to him…
Except for her… But it was too late now. She was taken from him before he realized how much she meant to him… Before he realized how fortunate he was to have her in his life. As golden eyes were covered, images flooded into his mind.
=Flashback=
‘Catch!’. ‘Oof! Get ready! I’m going to throw the ball to you!’. The white-haired boy watched as the other played mindless games, running after balls, and then falling over giggling. It happened everyday.
‘No, don’t ask! He won’t want to!’, he heard them whisper. ‘Sesshomaru! Would you like to play with the building blocks with us?’.
It was her. She was the most friendly and popular girl of them all. She was also the only one who talked to him. Everyday, with the same cheerful, energetic voice, she would invite him to everything she did. Despite the number of times he ignore her, glared at her, or got mad at her, she would always ask him.
When mealtimes came, she would always sit next to him and talk to him about everything. Occasionally, she would even try to get him to say something, but since he just ignore her, she would just answer her own question, as if nothing had happened.
Then one day, she wasn’t there. And she didn’t come the day after either. Days, weeks, months, and years passed, and she never returned. At first, he thought that he was happy she was gone, but slowly, he began to feel a sense of emptiness, a sense of being incomplete… A sense of sadness.
=End of Flashback=
500 years had past, and he still felt the same about her. As time passed, pieces of his memory of her had disappeared, and now, the only things that remained were the feelings he had for her. Holding on to the emotions almost seemed pointless. After all, he hadn’t heard hide nor hair of her for 500 years.
It WAS time to let go of the dreams of finding her, but of all things… he wanted to remember what he felt like, being around her. He would remember THAT… for an eternity.
Green eyes snapped open as she woke up from her dream Kagome didn’t understand why, but on the first day of every month, she would have that dream The one with children playing gin a ‘preschool’ of some sort, but what was strange, was that there was one boy, who she would always see, the one with smooth white hair, and deep golden eyes.
‘How is that possible? Only elderly people have white hair… and NO ONE has golden eyes!’. Although Kagome knew that her natural green eyes and black hair was strange… It was nothing compared to white hair and golden eyes.
Sighing, Kagome got out of bed and started getting ready for school. The dream never bothered her as a child. In fact, she used to wait for the dream to come. It always gave her a sense of happiness, joy, and… belonging.
Kagome’s past was blur to her. Having been ‘adopted’, she tried to forget her childhood. In some strange way, Kagome knew that she depended on the dream to be there; to be there to remind her that there was somewhere she belonged. She just had to keep looking and wait for the day where she would find it.
‘Sesshomaru-sama! Your half-brother has arrived, and demands to see you’, the green toad squabbled. The elegant lord looked away from the window and made his way through his mansion corridors. ‘Sesshomaru! You wimp, get out here’, he heard the half-demon yell.
‘I’m assuming that you have had the dream as well, seeing as you are here’, Sesshomaru said to Inuyasha. ‘I’m surprised’, Inuyasha said mockingly, ‘For once in your miserable life, you’re actually correct!’. Sesshomaru merely replied, ‘And like the rest of your life, you continue to act like an idiot. Now, if you have nothing more to say, I will be leaving now’.
‘Wait, you bastard! I’m not done talking yet!’, Inuyasha said furiously as he saw Sesshomaru begin to walk away. ‘Hmph, well maybe next time you’ll get to the point instead of wasting my time and sounding like the fool that you are. Come back here at the next full moon, along with your mate’. Without saying another word, Sesshomaru left, leaving the half demon to wonder how he had known.
Sesshomaru paced around in his study, his mind caught in a whirlwind of names. He could come up with many demonesses, none of which he would ever want to spend the rest of his life with. He had a month’s time to find a mate, or else…
‘Why did you do this… Father…’.
Kagome ran down the stairs as quickly as she could, knowing that if she didn’t hurry, she would be late. Seeing that her mother had already prepared breakfast for her, she sat down and began to stuff her mouth full of food.
‘Kagome… Would you mind coming directly home from school today?’, her mother asked. ‘Sure mom… Is something special going to happen?’. ‘Well… there’s someone I would like you to meet, but it’s a surprise, so you’ll have to wait and see’.
Kagome gave her mother a questioning look before shrugging it off and grabbing her backpack. ‘Okay mom, I’m going to school now!’, Kagome said. ‘Be safe and have fun’.
On her way to school, Kagome couldn’t help but wonder who it was that her mother wanted her to meet. ‘I wonder why mother is keeping it a secret for now… Could it be because she wants me to meet with a famous actor!?!’, Kagome thought dreamily to herself. ‘Then again, she might just want to introduce me to friend like she said… Hmph, guess I’ll just have to wait until school ends’.
Pushing that aside, the black haired girl looked up into the blue sky andsmiled, looking forward to a new day. For the millionth time in her life, Kagome said to herself, ‘Maybe today… I’ll find the place where I belong…’.
There was a brief knock on the door, and a slight creak as it opened. ‘Higurashi-san…?’, a majestic voice called out. ‘Ah… Takemoto-sama… It’s been a while since we’ve last seen each other…’. ‘Yes… Quite a while…’.
Sesshomaru watched as the demonesses battled, though he had a strong suspicion of who would win. Suddenly, he felt the scar on his chest burn, and cause him to clutch his chest and hiss in pain.
=Flashback=
‘Sesshomaru… Sesshomaru…’.
The white-haired man looked around frantically for the source of the voice, though it yielded no result. Despite being spoken quietly, the voice had a certain quality to it, that demanded all attention to it instantly, and it was the only one he had ever submitted to.
‘It is time for you to claim a mate… The one destined to you, is the strongest of them all, and will bring you eternal joy and happiness. But, you must fine her soon, and you cannot delay this for much longer. The scar that I have branded you with, will consume your flesh and eventually kill you unless you have found the one… You may remove the scar… But that would mean to sacrifice your dearest possession, be it a memory or object… Now, go, go and find her…’.
=End of Flashback=
He was brought back to reality when there was a knock on his study door, and judging by the aura, he knew it to be the winner of the battle. ‘Sesshomaru-sama, it is I, Sara, and I have come to tell you that the battle is over, and I have been declared as the winner. To be given the chance to be the mate of someone of such high rank and power as you, would be…’.
‘I have heard enough. You will be expected to arrive here by the next full moon, and a messenger will send further details and information to you. Now, you may leave’. Hearing a small shuffle of armor and cloth, he felt her presence leave. The Lord sank down into his chair and closed his eyes, not knowing what he was getting himself into.
‘Is she really the one who will bring me eternal ‘happiness’… Is she the one who is ‘destined’ to be with me? Will the scar really disappear once I have found the right person?’, Sesshomaru questioned himself. ‘Nothing to do but wait now…’.
‘I’m home!’, Kagome called out from the door. Instead of seeing her mother, Kagome found herself staring at a beautiful and elegant lady. She had raven black hair that reached the middle of her back, and the most incredible blue-gray eyes that seemed to be a world of its own.
Kagome snapped back to reality when she heard her mother say, ‘Kagome, I would like you to meet Takemoto-san. She is one of my friends from a long time ago…’. Bowing down, Kagome quickly said, ‘Takemoto-san, it’s a pleasure to meet you’.
‘No, no, the pleasure is all mine, and please, Reiko is fine’. ‘So, shall we go to the lounge for some tea first?’, Kagome asked.
‘Actually, I had something else in mind. The best way to start this meeting is for you to come with me, and we shall go outside for a while…’, Reiko replied.
Reiko led Kagome to the large empty area in the far end of the shrine, and asked, ‘So… Higurashi-san has not yet told you of why I am here, or who I am, has she?’. Kagome shook her head and looked back up at Reiko, who merely smiled back. ‘We might as well start from the beginning then…’.
She gripped Kagome’s neck and began to tighten her hold. Kagome screamed with fear, desperately trying to break free. ‘Fight, Kagome… Let your true strength break through’. Tears ran down the young girl’s face as she struggled to breathe.
Pain erupted from every part of her back as Reiko threw her against a tree. Seeing Kagome sob and crumple up on the ground, Reiko closed her eyes and sighed. ‘Stand up, Kagome… Kagome. I said, stand up!’. Reiko whipped the girl continuously, her heart breaking at the scene.
Suddenly, the whip stopped as Kagome grabbed on to it, head still bent down. ‘Please… Stop…’, she heard the girl whisper. Kagome shut her eyes and wrenched the whip from Reiko. Power coursed through her veins as her body began to change from a mere human, to a powerful demoness. Reiko pulled out a mirror from her kimono, and faced it towards Kagome.
‘This is your true form, Kagome… You are a black leopard demoness, like myself… You have a demon form, and this is it.’, Reiko said slowly. Kagome stared at her reflection, not believing anything that was happening. ‘This… must all be a dream…’, Kagome whispered before fainting.
As the darkness slowly left Kagome’s view, she woke up, not quite knowing what to expect. Greeted by blue gray orbs, Kagome tried to sit up, hoping that she didn’t look too disrespectful. ‘I’m sorry… I don’t know what just happened…’, Kagome muttered, her cheeks burning red.
‘No, I’m the one who should be apologizing. I knew that having you transform back to your original demon self would take a lot of energy, and should have done it later. There are a few things I need to tell you of, so I hope you have strength to keep up’.
Kagome nodded and smiled reassuringly, ‘I’m fine now, just a bit tired. But please, go on, I think it’s about time I learned about all this…’.
‘Hm… Where to start… Where we are now, is actually few hundred years into the future of where you and I first came from. There, it is what you would know as the Feudal era. When you were still a young child, there was a war, so Takeshi and I thought that it would be best if we brought you here instead… And that’s how it has been ever since’.
Kagome felt butterflies fluttering inside her stomach as she looked back at Reiko, realizing what she had just said. ‘So… You’re… you’re… my mother?’, Kagome whispered. Reiko gave a small smile and nodded. ‘I would understand if your feelings of a mother figure went to Higurashi-san… After all, she is the one who raised you’, Reiko said, laughing slightly.
The blue gray eyes widened as she felt the girl hug her and call her mother. Reiko felt all the wounds in her heart heal up, just from the single moment. ‘Oh… Kagome… It’s great to have you here with me again…’. Kagome just nodded and sobbed, barely managing to say, ‘And it’s great to be back at your side… Mother…’.
