The Moment I Saw You Cry

Hiei frowned once more to himself as he looked into the empty bedroom of the girl he had been watching for quite a while now. She was frequently gone, and truth be told, he missed her. And that was something that slightly upset the fire apparition. Never before had he been this attached to a female before, but this girl who even now seemed to be an enigma to him, held his attention unlike any before her.

He had met her a couple of months before, her tears being the first of the sounds coming from her slightly swollen face streaked with her sadness. She came from a building that was near the Shrine he was currently investigating, purely on Koenma’s orders of course. Supposedly there was a girl time traveling to the past to collect shards of a very powerful and ancient artifact, and he was here to confirm the reports. At the time, he was just glad he didn’t have to be near the rest of the Rekai Tantei, as with their recent attempts to set him up with females was making him extremely irritable towards the team in general. None of them could understand his need for solitude; except for Kurama, yet even he went behind the apparitions back and tried to set him up with a female.

He watched the raven haired girl with boredom until he smelled her fear. “Inuyasha, just go back and leave me alone! I know you slept with Kikyou, and I don’t want to hear your lame ass excuses! Just leave me alone! I’ll come back on my own!” he heard her shout out, as she lifted a large backpack that looked way too heavy for her tiny frame and headed for her home.

“But you have to help us find the shards, wench! What do you think, you can just come home every time you feel like it?!” a male voice replied, instantly getting Hiei’s attention as he placed a hand on the hilt of his katana.

The fire apparition waited until the owner of the male voice came forward and he suppressed a growl. The girl seemed to treat the inu-hanyou with much respect, yet he wouldn’t leave the girl to cry. Something beyond his knowledge had to have happened between these two, and Hiei found himself intrigued—so he continued his silent watch, as the hanyou came closer to the miko girl, before she turned around, tears still in her eyes and she shouted loudly, “SIT!”

Hiei hid his laughter as the boy in red plummeted to the ground, a string of curses coming from his mouth.

“Leave me alone! Go back to that corpse you love so much! I just want to cry in peace, so go home Inuyasha!” she shouted, turning back around to head towards her house.

The hanyou lifted himself from the crater he was in and went to approach her again. “Do you really want me to say it, Inuyasha? I could stand here and say it until bedtime!” she shouted, her tears leaving her only to be replaced with a deep anger. Hiei leaned back a bit at the difference in her stance. The female was extremely pissed, and the hanyou, he had a feeling, was going to feel her wrath.

“You can’t stay here forever, Kagome! You have to help find the shards! You’re the only one who can sense them!” the boy shouted, a fierce look upon his face. The girl hung her head slowly, and Hiei couldn’t believe that he felt…sorry…for the girl, and somewhere in his consciousness, he felt the need to protect her from the half demon in front of her. He swore mentally, before hearing her soft voice reply with deep betrayal and sadness, “That’s all I will ever be to you, won’t it? Just some fucking shard detector.” Her last statement ended with poison in her voice.

“Go away…I will come back on my own.” She said, before turning to leave him again.

The inu-hanyou reached out a hand that was quickly pushed away by an invisible force. “Kagome…” he said softly, his tone now filling with regret.

“Save it…I don’t want to hear it. Go back. I’ll return when I’m ready.” She said with a tone of finality. The hanyou kept his mouth shut for once, and he turned from her.

“I’ll see you tonight. Be there at the well or I’m coming for you.” He bit out harshly before jumping into the small building again. A wave of magic permeated the air around the fire apparition before he could no longer feel the demon’s presence.

“Inu no Baka!!” she shouted harshly, before a fresh wave of tears began to flow down her almost porcelain appearing face. Hiei could feel the raw betrayal and sadness permeate her aura almost entirely, and he found himself drawn to her for some reason. Even from first glance, the girl seemed…different…than other humans he had encountered. He watched as she ascended the steps to her home before disappearing from his sight. He had yet to confirm if she was in possession of the rumored artifact, so he did the only thing he could do, he continued his watch.

The girl was in her room in moments, and Hiei had a perfect view of her, and unfortunately, her tears. He cursed himself once more for feeling pity for the girl, yet he didn’t know why. She confused him, and the fire apparition hated feeling so strongly for a girl he hadn’t even met.
Not even Yukina had invoked these strong of feelings within him, and she was his only living relative.

He further masked his aura and scent as she opened her window to tempt the non-existent breeze into her room. “Inu no baka…” she whispered again, hanging her head. He felt once more the intense waves of sorrow and betrayal in the girl’s aura, and he couldn’t stop himself from identifying with her on some primitive level. Betrayal was one of the many things he understood unfortunately, and so he could understand the feeling, if not the situation behind the feelings the girl was showing.

Kagome could feel the aura of a demon near her, although she couldn’t see him, she felt somewhat comforted by his presence, even though she didn’t know who he was. She wiped her tears away, and took off her glass necklace with the shards and placed it on her desk.

That was the proof Hiei was looking for, but he didn’t feel the need to leave yet. This girl had secrets, and he wanted to know them. He waited for her to sleep before allowing the Jagan to be freed, freed to explore the miko girl’s mind.

He was surprised that her mind was so easy to delve into, but was shocked at what she had lived through. She was human and lived and done more than most demons he knew. She was burdened with repairing the ancient Shikon no Tama, and she was steady in her resolve to fix it. The team she traveled with seemed like a strong group, although the much abuse that the girl went through by the hanyou didn’t go unnoticed by Hiei. Her love for the hanyou shown bright in her minds eye, but there was much pain and sacrifice on her part for that love. The fire apparition was interested to say the least. Her loyalty to him and him alone shocked him—mainly for the reason that she was a human, and a miko at that. He watched her first adventure through the well, and held silent praise for the girl at her steadily growing strength and her abundant courage that she showed many times in her memories.

One of the many things he found most interesting about her was that she claimed a kitsune kit as her own. A miko onna taking care of a demon child was most perplexing to him, but it was not an unwelcome knowledge. He rather found calm in that piece of information.

He saw the timeline that brought her to her current pain and betrayal. The miko, Kikyou, whom the hanyou, Inuyasha, had loved in the past, was walking at an undead on the earth, and the girl, Kagome Higurashi, whom showed him much love and unconditional compassion, had witnessed the sight of said hanyou and miko together in the act of mating.

At that moment, when he saw what she did, he couldn’t help but feel his stomach churn and his blood boil simultaneously. The fact that the hanyou was rutting with a corpse made him want to vomit, and the fact that he cast this girl, who seemed to care for him with her very soul, away, to be with the undead one, made him want to growl in anger. He remembered calming himself very much so after witnessing that memory, as he was apt to go in search of the hanyou to dismember him.

The girl stirred in her sleep, tears coursing freely down her face once more. How he wished to offer her some form of comfort! But he held himself back, telling the demon within him to shut the hell up. He wasn’t about to become a puddle of emotion for one human onna. But he did one thing…he watched over her, and kept her safe from the hanyou, should he decide to come back early.

That night was full of strange contemplation that Hiei had never faced before. She intrigued him, and he debated whether or not he would show himself to the miko girl. The inu-hanyou didn’t return that night, and Hiei found himself calmed just by watching the girl sleep.

The fire apparition was brought forth out of his reverie at the sound of loud, almost animalistic sobs. A quick sniff and feel of the air told him that the girl had returned, and she was in pain. He was instantly down from the God’s Tree to go to the well house, her form shaking and her scent filled with despair.

He jumped down to the bottom of the well, and saw her figure limp in the darkness, more tears and sobs coming from her body. “Where are you hurt, Miko?” he asked quickly, smelling blood, but not being able to see the injury in the darkness of the well.

Dark, but slightly shining eyes looked to his red ones, and he refrained from kissing her senseless. The girl was indeed much more beautiful than what he had seen from a distance. She didn’t look surprised to see him, which slightly bothered the fire apparition. Silence filled the air around them before she said, “He marked me…”

Confusion swirled in Hiei’s mind before it clicked. The inu-hanyou. But…this left Hiei to be even more perplexed. He didn’t smell the scent of sex from her, just the hanyou. And even if he did, didn’t the miko love the hanyou? Why would she be despairing over him marking her?

“Explain, miko.” He asked, a bit of a growl in his voice. He hated feeling so much over one girl, and a human miko at that, but she was on his watch, and he would exact revenge for her, if only to sate his demon’s thirst for retribution at his honor.

“Kouga showed up…” she said softly, a few more tears leaking down her face, as her throat seized a bit. Hiei knew something terrible must have happened to her, as he had never seen her this upset before. Without realizing it, he had knelt down and picked the girl up in his arms, resting her on his lap, and her head instinctively went to his chest, as her tears intensified.

Moments only filled with Kagome’s sobs went on between the fire apparition and miko. Moments that Kagome took to release her fear and sadness in her tears. Before she was done, Hiei’s cloak was soaked through, but he found he didn’t mind it as much as he thought he would have.
“Continue, miko.” He said, increasing his grip on her as her tears drifted off into sniffles and hiccups.

She nodded, and kept her head buried in his chest, her hands clenching tightly on his shirt, her hands turning white slightly from the pressure she invoked on the cloth. “Kouga showed up…he wanted to give me a jewel shard that he had gotten from a demon his pack had killed.” She started, her voice soft.

“He began to do what he always does…call Inuyasha a dog-turd and me his woman. I didn’t pay any attention to him, just like I always do. I know I’ll never love him like he wants me to, but he’s my friend, and he helps protect me, just like…” she paused, as a few more tears leaked out of her eyes.

Hiei began to rub soothing circles in the raven haired girl’s lower back, calming the tense bundle of nerves that was centered there. He was being very patient, surprising even himself, as he waited for her to continue.

“…he got mad, madder than I’d ever seen him before. All over Kouga’s words…he…didn’t ignore him, like usual…and he didn’t yell back at him, like usual…he…started to growl…” she broke down in complete sobs again, before asking in an almost hushed whisper, “Is there any way to get rid of a mating mark once you’ve been bit?”

Hiei looked to her quickly, and then to the blood that was running down her shoulder. Now everything made sense. “He marked you without your consent?” he asked, his demon blood rising at the question, his heart increasing its beating as each second passed.

She just nodded into his chest before breaking down into sobs again as she choked out, “H-he b-b-bit m-m-e…he just came up b-behind m-me and b-bit me. He s-s-said that s-s-since he did, no one else w-would w-w-want me…and that he c-c-could be the only one w-who would have me…” her voice dropped off as she broke down into complete sobs, her heart tearing once again in her chest.

Hiei instinctively tightened his grip on the shaking girl. His demon blood was raging deep within him. He was contemplating taking the girl as a bedmate at some time, but now, with the mark, she would not be able to feel any pleasure, only pain that would come from the ‘betrayal’ to her so-called mate.

Her voice interrupted his thoughts as she asked again, “Is there any way at all I can be with anyone else? Is there any way to get rid of this mark?”

Hiei thought back to all the information he had learned from demons and their mating rituals and marks over the years. There was one thing they could try, if she was willing. The only thing that would mess it up, is the fact that a hanyou marked her; he didn’t know how adverse the over-marking would affect her human, not to mention, miko, body.

“There is one way, miko.” He said, before she quickly said, “Please, call me Kagome, and what do I have to do?”

“Kagome…” he liked the way that sounded coming from his mouth. “You’ll have to be remarked. You will not be able to take a human mate…if you did, you would feel only pain when you decided to mate with him.” She looked down from his face, and he felt a little part of his own body ache with her pain.

Her broken voice called to his soul as she asked, “Who on earth could ever learn to love me enough to remark me?” Her tears leaked from her swollen eyes once more, and Hiei couldn’t help but hold her closer as sobs wracked her tiny form once more. He could feel and smell the hopelessness in her scent, the betrayal, the sadness…it was something that sent his youkai into a frenzy. Her hurt was demanding retribution on his part, and he anticipated the day the hanyou would return to fetch her. Speaking of hanyou, he had yet to make an appearance, and this was making the fire apparition wary.

“Where is he now?” he asked, a slight growl in his voice.

“He’s probably trying to come back through the well…I’ve sealed it for the time being…I didn’t want him to follow me…” she said, her voice sounding weak and dejected.

“Don’t worry, Kagome…for as long as you live, I won’t leave you alone. I will stand by you, even if that hanyou won’t.” he said, not knowing why he was promising something so trivial to this human girl in his arms.

“Thank you…but I don’t even know your name…what is it?” she asked, stilling gently in his arms as her body went slightly lax, exhaustion overtaking her.

“Hiei…my name is Hiei.” He said, jumping up from the dark recesses of the well house to meet the sunlight once more.

“Hiei…thank you…for watching over…me…” she whispered out, before falling into the arms of darkness that was sleep.

He looked down at her still form and his eyes softened at her once more. There were tear streaks all across her face, but she looked slightly calmer than when she was at the bottom of the well. He jumped in her open bedroom window and gently set her down on the bed. He took off her shoes and socks, and then went to jump back out her window, when her whimper reached him.

“Don’t leave me…not yet…” she said, her sad, sapphire eyes locked onto his crimson ones once more.

He chose the lesser of two evils and unhooked his katana, before resting beside her on the bed. Her arms reached around him and within moments, she was fast asleep, a gentle smile breaking onto her weary face.

His own arms hesitantly went around her, and she scooted closer to him in her sleep, pressing her warm human flesh against his. Giving up trying to get out of this situation, he rested his head on top of hers and closed his eyes, and surprisingly felt quite relaxed in her embrace.

“I will protect you from him…I promise you with everything that I am…he will pay for hurting you…” Hiei whispered gently in her ear, and her smile grew slightly before he felt her lips kiss his neck, sending a shockwave through him.

“Arigatou…Hiei…” she whispered, before falling into sleep once more.

Time passed, and Kagome had gone back to the past, as she always did, this time though, with Hiei by her side. The fire apparition had promised her, and he would not fail her, his honor would not allow it. Inuyasha, of course, did not like this new turn of events.

“Wench, who the fuck is this?!” he cursed loudly, a growl escaping his lips. Just as it did, there was a blade at his throat.

“You will refrain from speaking to her in such a manner. Do it again, and I will not hesitate to kill you.” Hiei said in a deadly dark voice. He and Kagome had talked very much on the subject of the hanyou before his trip to the past with her. Koenma deemed it necessary as well, to assure that the hanyou would live to lend his support in the final battle with Naraku. Both the power of the Tetsuseiga and Kagome’s miko power would be needed to bring the evil hanyou down, and he did not want Hiei killing him prematurely.

Not to say he didn’t agree with the death of the hanyou, but it would do more harm than good at this point in time.

Kagome looked at him before turning her face away. Inuyasha seemed to become more enraged at her action. “Dammit, wench! Aren’t you supposed to back me up?! Call off your fucking watch dog!” he shouted, which earned him a deeper cut on his neck.

“I dare you, hanyou. Tempt me once more…” Hiei growled out, before a new voice interrupted.

“Would you kindly refrain from killing my brother, as that honor has been left to me, and me alone. He has disgraced my family name too much for me not to have that honor.” The Taiyoukai of the Western Lands, Sesshoumaru, said in a silky smooth voice.

Hiei looked to the lord and nodded slightly, showing his respect. The Aristocratic Assassin acknowledged the gesture and returned one of his own. “This Sesshoumaru wishes for your name.” he said, looking to Hiei with barely disguised interest.

“Hiei.” He said simply, sheathing his blade only to jump back in front of Kagome, who was looking to Sesshoumaru with curiosity.

“Well, Hiei, this Sesshoumaru knows of the actions of my half-brother, and would like no less than to allow you the honor of revenging the fair miko, but the pact of my forefathers name will not allow me such liberties. I will have his head before the end.” He said, giving a small nod to Kagome as he spoke.

Sango and Miroku looked dumbfounded at the Taiyoukai before narrowing their eyes at Inuyasha. They knew what he did, and they had found their trust lacking in the hanyou, where the Lord had not given them a reason to distrust them. Always, they had known him to have a problem with his brother, but not with them.

Shippou bounded into Kagome’s arms, breaking her stare on the demon lord. “I missed you, Momma!” he said, tears coming to his eyes. That got everyone’s attention. He hadn’t addressed her as such before, and even as the endearment fell from his lips, Kagome hugged him tightly and held her own tears in check.

“I missed you too, my son…” Sesshoumaru hid his surprise beneath his normal mask of indifference, but Hiei wasn’t so skilled at the Western Lord at such abilities, and he couldn’t hide his surprise and wonderment.

‘That is the kit I saw in her memories…and she really does love him as her own…’ he thought, amazed.

“Hiei.” Sesshoumaru spoke once more, getting his attention.

He looked to the stoic lord and received a look of pure trust, that also held a secret promise within their depths. ‘You will take care of the miko, until which time she must fulfill her destiny, will you not? You will protect her, especially from my half-brother?’ he thought, using his telepathic powers.

‘Hn. I won’t let him hurt her anymore. I promised, and my youkai will not stand for any less.’

“I take my leave, brother. Trust me when I say, do not tempt him again, or he will not hesitate to kill you where you stand. And I would hate to have to take his life in exchange of your pathetic one.” He said, his eyes once more locking with the fire apparitions.

Inuyasha could only try to sputter a response.

Kagome smiled softly to the Taiyoukai and then said, “Thank you, Sesshoumaru sama. Please take good care of Rin. I would like to see her next time you are near, if you wouldn’t mind.”

He nodded and filed away that piece of information. He would remember to bring Rin to see the miko…it was good for her to have an influence other than his toad servant, Jaken.

He was gone in an instant, and there was a collective sigh of relief from Miroku and Sango. “Kagome-chan…how are you doing?” Sango asked, walking up to her and placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Fine, but let’s go back to Kaede’s. I’d like her to meet Hiei.” She replied, smiling. Sango nodded mutely, shock on her face. Just then, Miroku decided to stroke her backside once more, earning a resounding fist to the back of his head.

“HENTAI!” she screamed, into which Hiei just smirked. The houshi was amusing, but Inuyasha was anything but amused.

“Fuck! What the hell was that about?!” he shouted, glaring back and forth from Hiei to Kagome.

“Hiei will be with us until we defeat Naraku, and then he’s going back home with me. Deal with it, Inuyasha.” Kagome said, turning around and heading back to the village with Hiei following behind her, his smirk ever-growing.

“The fuck he is!!” Inuyasha shouted before Kagome said, “SIT BOY!”

“He’s staying and that’s final, besides, this isn’t your decision! It’s Koenma’s, and, more importantly, MINE! So you can stop yelling anytime now, it won’t do you any good!” she added, petting Shippou’s head affectionately as she walked away.

By the time they had reached the outskirts of the village, they realized that he was gone. ‘Fine with me…he can go back to that clay-pot if he wants.’ Kagome thought, as she sat down in Kaede’s hut, earning a surprised look from the older miko at the new addition to the little group.

“Who might ye be, child?” Kaede asked, looking to Hiei.

“Hiei.” He said, recalling Kagome’s description of the old woman. She had told him about her and the tone of her voice was one of pure love and admiration. Apparently, the woman had helped her deal with her broken heart more than once, and she had a bountiful amount of wise knowledge that she willingly parted with in order to help Kagome in any way she could. He would regard her with the same respect he gave Genkai. Older age was not necessarily a bad thing. Plus, she had helped Kagome develop her powers in any way she could, and shared her knowledge of healing with the girl. The woman was worthy of his respect.

She nodded and handed out bowls of stew to the travelers, which was received gratefully.

“Inuyasha be with Kikyou once more, would he not? I am sorry, child, but for part human, he shows not any smarts, and for demon he shows not any backbone nor instincts.” She said, making Hiei smirk once more, but his smirk fell when he saw sadness flash across the raven haired girl’s face.

He placed a gentle hand on her back and she looked to him, giving him a small, reassuring smile before going back to her food. A gesture and look not lost on Miroku or Sango.

“So…Lady Kagome…how are you faring? Seems to me you and Hiei…” before he finished his thought, he was sporting another rather large lump upon his forehead, and Kagome was sporting a tomato red blush.

“Hentai houshi!” Sango cursed under her breath, before looking apologetically to Hiei. “Sorry for him…he’s always like this.”

“Hn.” He replied, before trying the human food. It wasn’t bad, but Kagome’s cooking was better. Then again, maybe it was just that Kagome was there that made everything around her better. He shook off the thoughts and finished his meal quickly. He knew that the hanyou would return, and he wanted to be fully prepared to defend Kagome from him.

“Sango…bath?” Kagome asked, a smile on her face. Nodding profusely, she looked back to Miroku and said in a loud voice, “Don’t harass Hiei like you do me, or I will knock you into next year, hentai houshi.” She threatened.

She whispered into Hiei’s ear, “Try not to kill him before we get back. Humor him, he’s not such a bad guy. Besides, Sango loves him more than anything, and he’s like a brother to me.” She smiled gently before standing back up and heading out the door. Hiei swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat, as a strange feeling coursed through him, making his body warm considerably.

They went out to the hot springs and slid into the nice, hot water, allowing it to work it’s magic.
“So, Kagome…how did you meet Hiei?” Sango asked nonchalantly, washing the grim and sweat from her body.

“He’s been watching over me since about, four or five months ago…at first, he was watching me to find out if I was a time traveler and if I had the Shikon.” She began, but at Sango’s alarmed look said quickly, “…but it wasn’t his orders. It was Koenma’s. Koenma is leader of the spirit realm, and he wanted to make sure it was in good hands, and not in demon hands.” She elaborated.

“So what now?” Sango asked, calming slightly at Kagome’s explanation.

“Now? He’s protecting me from someone else…” she said, her face turning soft and sad.

“I’m sorry Kagome. I wish I would have seen him sooner, I could have stopped him from hurting you like he did.” The slayer said, regret and guilt in her voice.

“Iie, Sango chan…he would have done it no matter if you had tried to stop him or not…he might have killed you to get to me…and I would not allow him to do that!” she shouted softly, placing a gentle hand on the taijya’s shoulder.

“So…” Sango began softly, after a few moments silence.

“So what?” Kagome replied, looking quizzically to her almost sister.

“So? I’ve seen that look you give him, Kagome chan. Do you care for him?” she asked.

~*~

Hiei had abandoned the monk soon after the girls went to bathe. The man was just too lecherous for his tastes. Almost as bad as Youko, and that was saying something.

He found a comfy spot on a branch just outside the human village and was contemplating a certain miko before he heard the slayers voice say, “So Kagome, how did you meet Hiei?”

Intrigued, he moved closer to the edge of the branch he was occupying and listened in on their conversation. ‘Look at me! Spying on a couple of human onna’s!’ he growled mentally to himself before hearing Kagome tell the taijya about their meeting, and then he heard her voice turn sad as she explained his new reason for staying by her side. He bit back a growl before silence filled the air around him and the slayer said, “So? I’ve seen that look you give him, Kagome chan. Do you care for him?”

~*~

Kagome looked startled at first before smiling softly to herself. “I do care for him. Very much so. More than I ever did for Inuyasha.”

At Sango’s shocked look she blushed and said, “Well, why not?! He’s always protected me, never once degraded me for being a human, and he sees ME when he looks at me. Not some incarnation, not some jewel detector, ME, Sango. Kagome Higurashi.” She shouted out, before clamping a hand over her mouth and casting her eyes down to the water.

“That’s good, Kagome chan. I am very happy you’ve found someone new to give your heart to. Inuyasha certainly didn’t deserve your attentions, and I’m glad, because I think he likes you too, otherwise, why would he still be here?” she said, looking with a small smile to her best friend.

“He’s here on Koenma’s orders. I don’t know how he feels for me. He’s hard to read, you know? I don’t THINK he hates me, but then again, I’m not the best judge on feelings, I thought that Inuyasha would care for me enough not to hurt me in the worst way possible…” Kagome grumbled, scrubing furiously on the skin marred by the hanyou’s mark, willing it away for not the first time since she had unfairly received it.

Sango placed a gentle hand over her sister’s, stopping the scrubbing for the moment. “It’s not your fault you loved him, Kagome. I love him, just as you do, although the love I have for him is more brotherly than anything. It is not your fault he is a stupid male that thinks with the wrong brain.”

Kagome giggled a bit before saying, “Thanks, Sango.”

“Anytime, sis.”

~*~

Hiei heard her response and about fell out of the tree. Then he heard her explanation, and smiled to himself. The girl had feelings for him. Him, the forbidden child. She knew of his complete past, and she never condemned him for all the lives he took. It was a consequence of Koenma’s doing, one that he had threatened to behead the demi god for profusely, thinking that Kagome wouldn’t want anything to do with him ever again. She surprised him by hugging him and smiling, assuring him that his past didn’t bother her. She had blood upon her hands as well. She could understand the will and instinct to live.

He heard her hesitation at his feelings, and felt a small ache in his chest. Then he heard her subconsciously blaming herself for Inuyasha’s actions and Sango’s reassurance, and he was very glad for the slayer’s kind words towards his miko. ‘His?’ he thought quickly. ‘Yes, ours…’ a familiar voice called out from the depths of his subconscious.

Apparently, his youkai didn’t have a problem with this particular female either.

Kagome and Sango walked back to the village, small smiles on their faces as they enjoyed the fall leaves swirling around them. The air chilled around them a bit and they walked faster to get back to the hut, welcoming the fire’s heat.

Hiei was sitting against the wall and Kagome took a seat beside him, into which Shippou hopped into her lap once more, earning a soft pat from Kagome.

“Want to color some, Shippou?” she asked, earning a nod from the tiny kit. She set him up with the supplies and she sat back next to Hiei, a content smile on her face as she watched her son play happily.

“There’s not enough moments like this…” she said softly, her eyes gentling.

Hiei looked to her and caught her faraway glance, as if she was in her own sweet paradise. He could identify. Moments of peace and tranquility were far and few between for him, too.

Before he realized it, her hand was intertwined with his own, and their hands weren’t the only ones connected, so were Sango’s and Miroku’s. Peace rarely lasts, and it was about to be disrupted once more.

Inuyasha stomped into the hut, eyes narrowed as he stuck his nose up into the air. “I see that outsider is still here. I thought I told you to get rid of him, Kagome?” he shouted, glaring at her once more.

“And I see you have been rutting with the dead one once more.” Hiei said, eyes narrowed. He felt Kagome tense and he squeezed her hand tighter.

The hanyou’s face turned the color of flour before turning red as a beet. “How dare you, outsider?! It’s none of your business what I do?! And get your filthy hands away from my Kagome!” he shouted, brandishing Tetsuseiga.

“Your Kagome, hanyou?” Hiei said, a deadly glint in his eye as they narrowed at him menacingly.

“YEAH! I believe I marked her, not you, hybrid, so that makes her mine!” he shouted back, earning a sharp growl from Hiei. His youkai was fighting to be released, even though he knew that Sesshoumaru had warned him against killing the hanyou, that did not mean he could not beat him within an inch of his life.

Kagome’s sob broke through the tension, earning many sets of eyes on her person. Shippou jumped to her shoulder and rubbed her hair soothingly, while the blood lust gentled in Hiei. His inner demon was pissed, but he would not see her hurt, and her tears made him extremely uneasy.

“Out of my house, Inuyasha. Ye are no longer welcome.” Kaede said, her eyes narrowing. Everyone looked to the old miko, mouths open with shock, all except Kagome, who was still silently crying.

Inuyasha looked incredulously to her before saying, “Huh?”

“Ye heard me, Inuyasha. Ye are not fit to be called a man, let alone a hanyou. Ye are a monster. Had I heard that ye had done the despicable to mine child, I would have banished ye months ago when ye returned without her. I had no idea ye had hurt her in such a way. Out, Inuyasha.” She said, malice lacing her rough voice, and anger flashing in her eyes. Pink energy swirled about her, calling forth her powers so like Kagome’s.

Inuyasha ‘feh’d’ and narrowed his eyes. But before anything else could be said, everyone felt the familiar demon energies that were associated with Kikyou. Narrowing his eyes spitefully, he turned and walked away, following the demon soul-stealers to Kikyou.

Hiei looked to Kagome and pulled her over to his lap.

“I’ll never escape him…will I? I’ll always be marked by someone who doesn’t want anything to do with me…” she said softly, tears coursing their way down her somewhat pale face.

“I will stay by your side. I will not leave you, Kagome.” Hiei said again, but he knew it would not be enough. Just promising to be there for her would not be enough. She needed more. She was a human, and he recognized the need humans had for companionship, and even more so, a strong emotional and physical relationship. Shippou jumped down to her lap, leaving Hiei’s hand free to bring her head into his chest, as her tears intensified.

He looked to the slayer and monk, both who sported sorrowful looks upon their faces. The both wished to take away her pain, but nothing could be done. They didn’t have the means to take away her pain, and that hurt more than anything.

The fire apparition sighed silently and looked to the older miko, seeing her look of anger and disappointment turn into one of sadness.

She clutched onto him with her tiny hands, and he wrapped his free hand around them, stroking the backs of them with his thumb. He was her strength, and he would not leave her. Her thoughts went off in his mind, and he smiled to himself.

‘I don’t know what I’d do without him…I love him so much…damn Inuyasha and all his fucking games with my heart!’ she cursed, another couple of tears coming down her face. After a few moments, her tears subsided, and she leaned up to wipe them away with the backs of her hands, sniffling a couple of times.

“Are you alright, Kagome?” Sango asked tentatively, holding onto Miroku’s hand tightly, as her own anxiety came out. He gently returned her gesture as Kagome said, “I’ll be fine. Until the day I die, I won’t let him see my tears anymore…I will not give him that satisfaction.” She said hardly, making everyone glance up with nervous looks.

“What?” the raven haired miko asked, looking to everyone with a confused face.

Shaking away her shock, Sango said, “That’s the way, Kagome chan. Don’t give that bastard the satisfaction! Just like Naraku!”

Miroku and Shippou nodded to her and she looked to Hiei, who only gave her a very tiny smile, and a look that was encouraging.

Waking from her slumber, Kagome headed out to take a bathroom break, but stopped as she came to the hut again. Looking up into the sky, she smiled. There was a full moon out tonight, and it was very beautiful. She let out a peaceful sigh and enjoyed the view a little longer before turning to go back to the hut, only to be intercepted by Hiei. He didn’t look happy.

“You shouldn’t be out here on your own, Kagome.” He said, his voice flat, but Kagome had learned to decipher his words, and heard his disappointment.

“I was just going to the bathroom. Don’t worry…I wasn’t going to stay out here.” She said, lowering her head.

“I know, but that hanyou can’t be trusted. I don’t want you to get hurt again, Kagome.” He said, his voice still monotone, but again, she heard the concern deep beneath his voice.

She nodded and walked beside him, clasping his hand as she had done earlier in the night and giving it a gentle squeeze. “Thanks for caring about me, Hiei.” She said, smiling softly.

“Hn.” He replied, before allowing himself to be pulled back inside the hut.

The next morning the group headed out on Kagome’s lead, her sensing a jewel shard not far off. They ended up defeating the bear youkai easily, Hiei’s speed slashing it down before anyone else could do anything. Kagome picked up the shard, and the taint was gone instantly. Hiei looked amazed at the motion a moment before shaking it off. ‘She really is a powerful priestess…’ he thought, and his youkai growled in approval.

They decided to have a picnic out, and set up the spread in the field. Just as they did, a familiar aura was felt. “The Taiyoukai is here.” Hiei said, looking to the sky as everyone saw the demon lord upon his cloud and the small girl Rin and Jaken upon Ah-Un, the dragon demon that served Sesshoumaru.

Happy squeals could be heard from the girl as she bounced off the creature to run into the open arms of Shippou. Instantly, a game of tag was formed, and they were off and running. Kagome smiled gently to them, before offering Sesshoumaru a seat next to her.

“It’s good to see you again, Sesshoumaru sama. Thank you for bringing Rin with you.” Kagome said, earning a look from Hiei, one not un-noticed by the stoic lord.

‘So the little hybrid is jealous…interesting…’ Sesshoumaru thought. He had no interest in the miko, but he would have some fun with the fire apparition. He placed a hand upon Kagome’s, but didn’t look at her. She, however, blushed a deep red, and her confusion spiked.

‘What in the HELL is he DOING?!’ she thought wildly, the stray thought reaching Hiei easily. Just as he went to step in, she pulled her hand away gently, reaching into the picnic basket as if that was the only reason for extracting her hand from underneath the demon lord’s.

‘Calm, Kagome…cool, calm, collected thoughts…calm…Hiei…yes, Hiei…my source of calm…’ she thought, bringing forth an image of him quickly. Almost instantly, her heartbeat evened out, and she began to breath easier, and the fire apparition was calmed himself at her actions. Knowing she didn’t warrant the advances of the Taiyoukai was a comforting thought.

Sesshoumaru, however, was beside himself. ‘She refused to take the bait of this, Sesshoumaru?! How does one reject this Sesshoumaru so easily?!’ he thought, surprise and shock filling him.

Kagome handed out food, and called the children over to fix them food as well. The sunshine and cool breeze were enjoyed by the little group, while the stoic demon lord tried to get a response out of Kagome the entire time. Response was still non-forthcoming from said miko. She just politely pulled away from his touch, and ended up very close to Hiei, who was angered each time the lord tried to touch what was ‘his’.

At the end of the day, Rin and Shippou were exhausted, and Kagome ended up carrying Shippou back to the village, and Sesshoumaru carried Rin.

“We had a very fun time, Sesshoumaru sama. We should picnic together again.” Kagome said, smiling gently. Then she patted Rin’s head and kissed her on the forehead.

“Sleep well, Rin, and be good for Sesshoumaru sama, ne?” she said, just as Shippou waved weakly to her.

“I agree, miko, this day was not as bad as this Sesshoumaru thought it would be. It was also good for Rin.” He said, looking to his now sleeping ward.

“See you later, Sesshoumaru sama.” Kagome said, before the stoic lord added, “Should you be in any danger, miko, you and yours are welcome in the Western Lands.”

She turned back to him and he was surprised to find tears in her eyes. She walked up to him and hugged him tightly, smiling into his royal kimono. “Thank you. Thank you so much.” She said, and Hiei hid his growl deep within his throat.

‘Take care of her, Hiei. Should I find you have hurt her as my brother has done in the past…I will kill you.’ He sent the message telepathically, earning a stiff look from the fire apparition.

‘Hn.’ He replied, before they parted ways.

Before they reached the village, Hiei stopped Kagome and said, “Hand the kit over to your friends. I must speak with you privately.”

She nodded, a worried look coming to her face. “I’ll be back soon, Sango. Take Shippou for me, please.”

‘Hn, that’s what you think…’ Hiei thought, grinning mentally. He had made a decision since he had seen the Taiyoukai touch his Kagome. She would be his. He would ask her, and if she was willing to take the risks in the re-marking process, then he would gladly remark her as his.

As her friends disappeared into the trees, she looked back worriedly to Hiei. “What’s wrong? What did you need to talk to me about?”

“Kagome…I must speak with you of important things. Things only you can decide.” He said, as she visibly stiffened.

“…are you going to leave me?” she asked, crushing despair lingering on the edge of her voice.

“Never, Kagome. I will never leave you. But, I wish…for something stronger. My word, while unbreakable except by death, is not enough for me any longer.” He said, his voice becoming deeper, as the emotions began to fly, emotions he had kept under lock and key for years.

“…what are you saying, Hiei?” Kagome asked, her voice taking on a slight quiver. Before she could look back to him, his lips were upon hers, those gentle caressing lips that instinctively had Kagome pressing back against, her body recognizing her pillar of strength as the owner of those lips.

She pressed against him, and their bodies touched, sending shockwaves through each of them. Hiei’s tongue came out to brush against her bottom lip, and instinctively, she opened up her mouth, letting him in to explore her as he wished.

Hiei didn’t know how his advances would be treated. He knew of her feelings for him, but this was beyond anything he had imagined, and his youkai was pleased that he was finally acting upon his given instinct to mate this girl who had accepted him unconditionally and who was remarkably powerful.

Kagome’s arms wrapped around Hiei’s shoulders, bringing him closer to her as he probed deeper into her mouth, engaging her own into a dual. His hands slipped under her shirt, tracing up her bare back before rotating to her front, clasping her clothed breasts within them. Her nipples hardened under the somewhat rough treatment. Kagome moaned into the kiss he was still giving her, and Hiei was glad that she was the first to receive his kiss.

To him, a kiss was personal, and anytime he rutted with females, it was simply a way to relieve the tension, so therefore, he never kissed them. If he had his way, he would never kiss another, and neither would she. Nor would he be with another. This female would be his, and no one else’s, least of all that hanyou that had hurt her so much.

They broke apart for some much needed air, and Kagome could still feel tremors pooling down to her stomach as he continued to press his thumbs against her nipples.

“Kagome…will you allow me to remark you? Will you allow me to try and claim you as my own?” he asked, stopping his ministrations to her breasts so that she could make this decision clearly.

“What is the risk, Hiei?” she asked honestly, resting her forehead against his, awakening his Jagan.

“Our traits would mix, turning you into an unknown youkai species. He is hanyou, and I am hybrid…I don’t know what would happen. Plus, you’re a miko…” he said, that underlying concern ever present.

“Do you love me, Hiei?” she asked. Confusion filled him. ‘She is not worried for the consequences? Only of my feelings for her?’ he thought, before he said, “Yes. I love you, Kagome.”

She smiled before whispering in his ear, “Then, yes. I give you my permission to remark me.”

Before she could lean up, her clothes were gone, torn to shreds on the meadow floor. Her gentle cry and wide eyes, caught his eye and he smirked at her modesty. “Kagome…I’ll be much more intimate with you by the time we’re done here…why do you hide yourself from me?”

“No one’s ever seen me this naked before except my mom…” she muttered out, still trying to hide herself from him.

He stepped forward and grasped at her hands, pulling them to the sides of her body so he could look upon her body unadorned.

“Beautiful…” he murmured before latching his mouth upon one of her breasts, bringing the stiffened nipple of her right breast to his teeth. She moaned, the so gentle touch sending more crashing heat to the center of her body. Then he bit it, making her cry out gently before moaning again as he soothed it. Before she knew it, she was on the ground, her legs slightly spread as Hiei lavished his now growingly rough attentions upon her breasts.

He grinned at each shiver that passed across her skin, and each throaty sound that issued itself past her swollen lips.

He let one of her hands go and it went straight to his hair, so he felt certain that she wouldn’t try to cover herself anymore. Letting the other one go, he let his hand trail over the smooth flesh of her stomach and he traced the outline of the scar where the Shikon had been ripped from her body before questing his way further to the moist heat of her womanhood. He cupped it gently, and Kagome arched up, a sound a cross between a squeak and moan emitting itself from her.

The way she responded to each and every one of his touches was amazing to him, and he couldn’t wait to see what other responses he could get from his little miko.

Grinning ferally, he began to gently stroke her inner folds with his index finger, feeling the wetness pour over his hand. She was ready for him anytime, but he wasn’t done playing. He knew the initial mating process would hurt her, and he was not leaving this encounter without bringing her pleasure.

Removing his mouth from her breasts, he began to nip and kiss at her stomach. He let his tongue delve into her naval, earning a gasp from her, before situating himself just above her nest of curls. Her arousal attempted to suffocate him, and it would have if he would have let it. Her scent was so powerful now, that everyone within a ten mile radius could have smelt it, but they would have also detected Hiei’s powerful aura and special scent, telling others that the woman was busy, and they are not to interfere. Kagome stared at him with clouded over eyes, her lust for him present in those sapphire orbs. Watching her, he licked once at her, tasting her essence for the first time.

Kagome was lost in a sea of feeling. She didn’t think anymore, she just felt. Never before had anything felt so wonderful, and when he touched her most private area, she lost all conscious processes.

Hiei began to lick the tiny nub that was just begging for attention, as Kagome’s moans dropped in tone and her breathing became extremely labored and harsh. She began to buck against his face, her hands tangled hopelessly into his hair. His claws dug into her flesh gently, only making her moan louder, just before her muscles tightened, and she emitted a loud and deep cry as her peak hit, releasing her womanly nectar to Hiei’s awaiting mouth. He didn’t care what men said about their mates orgasmic fluid, his woman’s tasted sweeter than honey.

He lapped up all she gave him before freeing himself from his confines. Ignoring his little friend wasn’t wise, as he was now hard as a rock, and aching to be buried within his female, but first, he had to mark her, otherwise, she would never find pleasure in their coupling.

Kagome’s eyes cleared as she saw Hiei standing over her in all his glory. Her eyes widened at his member, staring proudly at her. ‘How is that thing going to fit inside me?!’ she thought quickly before Hiei’s voice interrupted her thoughts.

“We will fit, Kagome, but I must mark you now, before we join together.” He said, leaning down beside her. She nodded, and leaned up to meet him. He drew a claw against his wrist, bringing forth blood. Confusion filled her face before he said, “First, you drink my blood, then…I remark you.”

She fought down the urge to gag as she took his blood into her body. Instantly, she started to hurt all over, and cried out in pain. Then, she felt Hiei pierce her neck where Inuyasha had, making tears roll down her face. Pain wracked her body, and Hiei pulled her into his lap, regret on his normally emotionless face.

“I’m sorry…tell me when it recedes…” he said, holding her closely to his warm body as her own began to fluctuate wildly in temperature.

Spasms of cold and hot rushed through her body as her own miko powers fought against the hybrid mark as well as the effects of the hanyou mark. Sweat formed in thick sheets on her body as the pain spasmed throughout her. Hiei began to gently nuzzle his mark, attempting to calm her, and as he did, everything stopped, leaving her numb.

She looked up into his crimson eyes, and placed a hand to his cheek. Leaning up, she kissed him gently, nibbling at his bottom lip affectionately. The action worked to get the feeling back in her body, and the warm, coiling sensations were restarted and intensified at the kiss turned passionate.

Kagome then broke the kiss only to trail it down his neck and onto his chest as she flicked his tiny nubs before biting them, only to soothe them, just as he had done to her. The response was instantaneous, and made her smirk against him, now that the danger and pain had passed.

Her tiny, inexperienced hands began to explore him with soft touches, and soon, soft, deep moans began to float to her ears.

This was pure torture on Hiei’s part. His body was a raging volcano and he didn’t want to hurt her or frighten her with his demon side, but her gentle touches and kisses were almost too much to take. Before a couple of minutes was up, he couldn’t take it anymore, and flipped her onto her back once more, him resting between her legs. She let out a surprised cry, but didn’t tear her eyes away from his.

By the look in his eye, she knew what was coming, and she prepared herself, mentally willing herself to relax. He positioned himself at her entrance and then began to nibble at her ear, distracting her from what he was about to do, at her gentle moans, he slammed himself fully within her soaking sheath, making her cry out in pain.

He nuzzled at her neck, his tongue licking away her tears as he awaited her signal that she was ready to continue.

Kagome felt like she was being ripped in two, but she waited for it to pass. She would not leave this encounter without experiencing all Hiei had to offer her. After a few crucial moments, she moved, and didn’t feel any pain this time. That was what the fire apparition had been waiting for.

He started a steady rhythm, but it was too slow for Kagome. Using the back of her heels, she pressed him further into her, closing the proximity even further between them. He pressed into her faster, making her cry out, but still, Kagome felt...she felt he was holding back, it seemed as if he was straining against something. She placed her hands to his shoulders, which were extremely tense.

Then she looked into his eyes, and got her answer. She saw the flash of blood red within those eyes, and she recognized it as his youkai, and he was trying to restrain it. Smiling gently, she leaned up to his ear and whispered, “Let go.”

The tension in his body snapped, and a growl escaped his lips as his body turned a dark green shade and eyes began to emerge all over his body. He pounded into her with god like speed, making her cry out in pure bliss.

Somewhere in the back of Hiei’s consciousness, he was afraid he was hurting her, but the look upon her face was anything but that of pain. Her walls contracted around him, and she screamed out her release, just as Hiei flipped her over onto her hands and knees, wanting to take her in the true demon style.

She rested her head against her hands, unable to do much else as he pounded furiously into her, quickly drawing forth another orgasm from the depths of her body. Hiei felt his own climax quickly approaching, and placed his fingers on her hidden nub, bringing her closer and closer to her release once more. As her walls clamped down a third time, Hiei growled his pleasure and let go of his seed as it went deep within Kagome’s cavern, while leaning over her shoulder and biting deep into her fleshy neck, earning a scream of, “HIEI!” from his mate as she threw her head back.

The two stayed like that a moment before Hiei let Kagome down on their shed clothes, extracting himself from her sweaty body. She somehow found the energy to turn to face him, her eyes moist with happiness.

“I love you, Hiei.” She said, her mouth dry so it only came out as a mere whisper.

He smiled, a true smile, and whispered back into her rapidly fading consciousness, “I love you, too.”

~*~

The next morning, Kagome awoke to find herself in the arms of her mate, who was awake and watching over her. She leaned up and captured his lips with her own, rekindling the fire that she had experienced last night, only to be interrupted by a voice saying, “Momma?”

Her eyes snapped open and a blush that could rival Hiei’s blood red eyes took over as she shot up from her place beside Hiei. “Shippou…” she laughed nervously, trying to get her furious blush under control, but didn’t have to, as a familiar slap was heard echoing in the hut, along with a woman’s angry voice saying, “Just because we were together last night, doesn’t give you the right to fondle me when you want!”

Kagome’s eyes widened, before she was distracted by Hiei’s lips again.

As they broke apart, she had a thought. “Hiei…when did you fall in love with me? Was it that first day I met you, when Inuyasha marked me?” she asked, looking to him curiously.

“No…that wasn’t when I fell in love with you.” He said honestly, pulling her closer at her confused look, and he whispered into her ear, “I fell in love with you, the moment I saw you cry.”
