Chapter One
The young man leaned against the tree, at ease finally after a long day of training. His muscles protested from the vigorous excercises. His eyes closed while he enjoyed the gentle breeze coming in from the south. There was no other youkai around to intrude upon his solitude. None were foolish enough to annoy him. Shura had grown in the last two decades, due to his unnatural birth. He was just as tall and broad as his father and powerful. Only by luck had his father won against him in last year's tournament. Not that he minded, his father was a great ruler. The youkai seemed content with the blind man as their king. He believed that it had something to do with the fact that his father wasn't like the last two rulers. Enki had won twice, then another of Raizen's old friends after. Then Hiei had won the next one, he kept the same law; no invading the Ningenkai. Yomi had only made one law, they were to listen to him. No mention of the Ningenkai had been made. Shura knew that even while he sat there bathing in the evening sun, youkai were crossing over. Killing what humans they could while Yomi was king.
He'd never actually seen a human, not up close. One couldn't count Kurama since he was actually a youkai. A true human had never made it to his father's territory. From what he gathered most of them were weak, which was why youkai fed off them. For the last year since his father had been crowned he'd stayed near Gandara, where they had taken up residence once more. His father dealt with all of the political affairs leaving him alone to train. All his father would tell him was that it would take decades to get the Makai to the way it was meant to be. What he wouldn't give for some action or excitement. He contemplated of heading into the city and find himself a woman. He found it to be a good way to relieve stress, plus get experience of another kind. For the last five years his sights had centered on one female. Kichi, a tiger youkai that was beautiful had caught his attention. She was one of the ladies that worked for his father. The girl wanted his father's attention but that didn't phase him. One day he would surpass his father and Kichi would be his.
She had to be aware of his desires, the girl took every opportunity to tease him. Finding ways to flaunt herself in front of him, touching him lightly when the chance arose. The one time he'd gotten the nerve to make a move she had turned him down. He knew she would tire of holding out, his father would never lower himself to mate her. Until that time he would continue to see to his pleasure at a local establishment.
The sound of thunder was heard, odd there wasn't a dark cloud in the sky. He opened his eyes, looking up to see what was up. He swore and jumped away from the tree, it blew up as he landed on his feet. Shock filled him seeing another large bright blue orb heading towards the ground several yards away. It couldn't be an attack on himself, they aim was way off. He watched in horror as the sky opened up and several more showered down onto the Makai. The sounds were heard as the balls made contact with the surface.
"What the hell?" Another blast landed a mile away from his present location, the ground shook under the impact. He had no idea what was going on, who could be attacking from above? Violet eyes opened wide, something was begining to appear through the clouds. The shape had no distinctive features as of yet but whatever it was, it was several miles in length and width. "I have to get home to father."
Enma slammed his fist down, breaking off the arm of his chair. He'd been afraid this would happen, he should have known better. Everything he'd done to prevent this had been for nothing. How the hell was he going to fix this? If this wasn't stopped then all three worlds would be in total choas. All because youkai and humans were all too blind to see the important picture. Everyone believed he did things for his own selfish purposes but it wasn't the case. He'd been there over three thousand years ago, he wouldn't let history repeat itself. Even if it meant asking the Makai ruler and his son's former team for help. Things needed to be done and now. If the city of Tokuhon is able to fully re-emerge then they would be released upon the Makai. Humans and youkai will once again fall prey to beings that saw both as cattle.
The door opened and his son walked in head bowed. "Good, you sure took your time in coming here. We need to act quickly, I will need your help in this. I know we have had our differences in the past. It is time to put that aside or a tragedy will fall upon all three worlds. Youkai, humans and even myself will be in danger if this isn't dealt with."
Koenma knelt down on his knees paying proper respect to his father. It was true they had their differences in the past, most of it starting with Yusuke. Over twenty years had passed since the boy had been fired from his job as spirit detecitve. Since then him and his father had been trying to work things out, form some type of understanding. His father had blown his lid knowing about the Makai Tournaments. Until recently that plan of Yusuke's had worked out for the best. Now, humans were being killed more often than not. A patrol was still up along the border but some still happened to get through, making their way into the Ningenkai and slaying innocent people. He knew why his father had called him in, he'd gotten the report hours ago. Someone was attacking the Makai from the sky. Something was appearing over the clouds as well, what he didn't know. "I assume this has something to do with the report I recieved."
"Yes. I have a lot to explain to you. Listen carefully, for you will need to recruit those we need and they will want to know what is going on as well. You will also need to ask assistance from the Makai King and you may wish to call in your former team. I can only hope that we are able to find the descendants that will be needed in case we can't stop this. I will leave finding them and bringing them to our side, while I try to stop the city." Enma saw that his son was very confused. "Forgive me, sometimes I forget that you are still very young and have seen only seven centuries. Let me start from the begining." Enma leaned in his chair ready to speak of the past and the horrible truth.
"Over three thousand years ago long before the borders were put up between the worlds. Before I became ruler of the Reikai, all three worlds were different. They were all ruled by one being that went by the name of Takakami, who thought himself to be a God. Some swore that he was indeed that, his origins were never known. In order to rule all three worlds he chose around five hundred humans to serve under him. To those chosen he granted them everlasting life and power beyond belief. Even greater than what we call class S youkai. These humans changed form as well, growing wings and becoming very beautiful in appearance. I'm sure you've heard of human legends of what they call angels. Some say it was started because of these followers. You would know one if you saw him. For countless centuries both youkai and humans were ruled by this being. While both species tried to survive they also fought against each other. Until one day seven humans rose from the ranks wanting to end the chaos. Everytime Takakami was challenged it was either by youkai or humans, not once had they worked together. These seven consisted of two married couples that had both found love with a youkai. Both couples found three other females that had taken a youkai as a mate only to live in the shadows. The seven humans were powerful and with words of much wisdom eventually united youkai and human. Together they launched an attack against the grand city of Tokuhon, the battle was amazing. Youkai and human fought along side each other, putting aside all differences."
Koenma found the concept hard to believe but knew his father wouldn't make up such a wild tale. He listened as the tale continued. Enma took a deep breath knowing his son would believe. "In order to stop Takakami they had to banish his city from which he drew his power. Destroying it wasn't possible so they decided to use their power to send it into another dimension. Six of them circled the large city all representing the elements found in our worlds. Fire, water, wind, earth, light and darkness, the seventh was chosen to serve as the key to open the portal. Using their strength and that of the youkai bound to them, both powers collided. A mixture of youkai and spirit energy was enough to force the city along with Takakami into this dimension. Once this was accomplished all three worlds found peace. It was said that as long as both youkai and humans could live together in harmony that the city would remained locked inside this dimension. For centuries after they both managed to live together well, then things changed. Youkai and humans began fighting once more. There was nothing that could be done, I tried after becoming ruler. It looked like they were destined to be at war with each other. The reason the border was placed between worlds was because I had no choice. Things were getting close, the seal was about to break on the spell. I thought seperating the two would solve the problem. For a few centuries that managed to keep the seal intact. Yomi allowing youkai to roam freely into the Ningenkai and the killing that came from that was enough to finish what I tried to stop. Now the seal is gone and the portal opening to allow the city to re-emerge once more."
"So what do we do now? Surely, there is a way for us to stop the city from descending into the Makai." Koenma stood up, fisting his hands. This wasn't good, it was worse than he'd thought. If that city came down then youkai would be the first to be enslaved then the humans. His father was sweating, worry was etched all over his usual calm face. Enma had always dealt with situations calmly, doing what he thought best. The large man looked afraid, which meant they were in deep shit.
"I will do what I can to stop the city. I doubt there is much I can do, I'm afraid. I will be putting my upmost trust in you this time, please don't fail me. You will need to get your team together then head to the Makai and inform Yomi of what is happening. Once that is done have him and your team deal with the chaos that is ensuing in the Makai. Then you will go find the descendants of the original seven. If the city is able to make it out, then they will be needed to seal it away once more. I have already formed the list, you only need to seek them out." Enma tossed the scroll down for him to catch. "You will see that one of them is an old friend of yours. In that regard you will understand her being on the list. You will also notice five of the lines are all wiped out, all the descendants dead now. Don't look like that, beside their names is the information needed to find them. We will be breaking a major rule but it is necessary."
"Yes, I see that but how do you propose I bring people that have been dead for centuries? Do I look through the records and find their souls?" Koenma eyed the two names he recognized, he wasn't suprised by either. Three of them were to be brought from the same year, the other two only three years apart from each other.
"No, it is their blood that will be needed not their souls. There are two things that must be followed and that is why I chose those. They must be in their original bodies and must have been reborn. Let me explain, their ancestors also were reborn which gave them the ablity to combine youkai and spiritual energy through the link created by the bonds shared with their youkai mates. The descendants I have chosen have all died and been brought back. Some by outside forces, others by their own willpower and the desire to live. Now go, I will fill you in on the rest upon your return."
Yusuke heard the door slam and he reached for the remote. He pushed the button to increase the volume not wanting to hear the bitching coming from the other room. Once again he was being yelled at for something he couldn't control. Earlier he'd gone shopping with Keiko to make her happy, he hated it. It wasn't so bad when they went for food, then he could get what he wanted. Yet Keiko insisted that he tag along while she shopped for new clothes. Like he wanted to watch her try on twenty different outfits before deciding on one. Today hadn't been as boring as usual, Kuwabara had been shopping along with Yukina. The two men had talked while the females looked over all the new trends. Kieko had already been in a bad mood from the week before because he'd been fired. He'd managed to keep the job for two months before someone went and pissed him off. It landed him unemployed and the man in the hospital.
To end the long drab day, he'd been casually leaning against the changing stall. Kuwabara had been discussing Shizuru when two young girls had come out from changing and began flirting with him. They couldn't have been no more than fifteen or sixteen years old. Keiko had come out to stand beside him looking pissed. One girl had made the comment about how she thought it was sweet that he'd go shopping with his mother. Kuwabara almost fell over and Keiko began screaming at the girl that she was his wife not his mother.
The first few years hadn't been bad for them. He'd been happy and content with living a normal life. Then she had begun to age, the years began to catch up to her while he still looked the same as the day he'd returned from the Makai. He believed it made her finally realize what he was, a youkai that wouldn't age for a long time to come. So after coming home she went on a tirade about him messing with younger women because she was growing old. He hadn't flirted it had all been onesided but she didn't seem to care.
Their age difference was becoming a gap in their marriage, one he feared would tear them apart. He still loved her, always would but things were different somehow. After returning from the Makai he had sensed it and chose to ignore it. Now everything he tried to make her happy seemed to backfire in his face. If it weren't for Kuwabara his life would be too much to bear.
He hadn't seen Hiei since returning or any of his other youkai friends. His plan had been to spend the remainer of Keiko's life with her. Kurama had stuck around for about a year then moved a few cities over. He often visited about once a year and those were short. Even Shizuru had moved, still in the city but far enough away. Yusuke hadn't seen her in over ten years, her being busy with her own life. His close friends and old teammates had drifted apart from him. It left a hole deep inside that couldn't be filled.
The most painful loss was that of Genkai because he hadn't gotten a chance to say goodbye. In two years he'd went to visit her three times after returning, then he'd gotten married. Before he knew it a lawyer had showed up at his door telling him of Genkai's death. No one had been informed until the services had already been taken care of. He didn't have any means of contacting anyone from the Reikai. He was told that her body had been cremated and then scattered. It angered him that things turned out that way.
Kuwabara being the big moron he was tried to appease Keiko's anger and made it worse. He suggested that Keiko call Shizuru and ask her about the cream she was using. Bragging that his sister didn't look a day over twenty. It only made Keiko angrier, taking it as an insult. She made the comment that not everyone could age gracefully.
Yusuke also knew that one problem was they never had children. Kuwabara and Yukina had four of their own, while Keiko had never gotten pregnant. Yusuke wasn't sure if the fault lay with him or her. She refused to talk about it after their tenth year of marriage, saying the topic was closed. Now their friendship was suffering along with their sex life. At first it had been enough to appease him, Keiko had been receptive to his touch. As the years went by it slowed down. By the fifth year it was down to once a week and planned. Then it had turned to a month and only when he got lucky. He couldn't remember the last time they had done anything but sleep in bed. He was sure it was over three years since they'd been intimate.
The doorbell rang, he looked at the clock. It was after six already, probably Kuwabara since they were suppose to come over for dinner. "I'm coming already." He walked over to the door wearing only a tshirt and boxers. Why didn't they just let themselves in instead of making him get up. His hand turned the knob and swung the door open. His jaw dropped seeing his former boss and friend standing in the doorway. "Koenma?"
Shuichi Minamino sat on the ground infront of the stone marker, a rose was placed next on the ground. The wind blew his long redhair, exposing the wind to the wet cheeks. He didn't care if anyone passed by while he mourned. The tears came freely as he thought of the woman that had changed his life. He never regretted his decision of staying in the Ningenkai to live with his human family. His mother had meant everything to him up until the day she had died.
His stepfather had passed on over five years ago, his stepbrother had moved away with his new wife. So he had remained at his mother's side until three months ago. Being a human she'd reached an age where her body began to fail. Shortly after losing her husband she'd fallen ill and been bedridden. Instead of putting her in a home to be seen to, he'd brought her to live with him. He'd hired someone to see to the family business and stayed home with her. Everyday had been spent with the woman he loved. Now she was gone and he had no reason to stay.
He'd lost touch with almost everyone over the years. Hiei came to visit him once after he'd returned then hadn't come back. He visited Yusuke and Kuwabara a few times but it had been brief. He hadn't been there when Genkai had passed on or for the birth of any children by Yukina. His mother had been his main concern. He hadn't seen Shizuru in twenty years but spoke to her twice on the phone over fifteen years ago.
His mother had been grateful to him for giving up most of his life to be with her. She yelled at him many times for wasting his life on her. Told him on occasion to find a nice girl to marry and settle down. He couldn't tell her why he had chosen to remain single. He still looked the same, so it hadn't been a matter of looks or being too old. Sharing his attention wasn't something he wanted. Not to mention finding someone who he could share what he really was with. A human wife had been out of the question and a youkai mate had been also. So his life had been devoted to Shiori, making sure that her life was a happy one.
Now with her gone, he knew it was only a matter of time before he had to disappear and return to the Makai. He wouldn't resume his life as Youko but planned to find a home. Maybe help out with the situation of youkai coming into the Ningenkai. The first place he planned to go is Gandara and speak to Yomi. He stood up when he felt a presence behind him he hadn't felt in years. "Koenma?"
Hiei walked beside Mukuro feeling tense, his nerves on edge and for good reason. Youkai were scattered everywhere, thousands of them all ran for safety days ago. As soon as the sky opened up with it's onslaught a barrier had been placed around Gandara keeping the energy out. It was now a safe place to be. He'd been sleeping peacefully when Mukuro had woken him up with the news. Both had tried to see what was causing the disturbence but got nothing when looking at the large shape in the clouds. A messenger had come from Yomi stating that Koenma was calling a meeting and that he was to be there.
He'd hoped never to see that toddler again until he'd finally met his end in battle. After ruling the Makai for a term he found that it wasn't to his liking. He enjoyed fighting to see who was better but laying down rules and messing with politics wasn't his cup of tea. Let Mukuro and Yomi deal with ruling, while he improved his skills. To rule meant worrying and taking care of those under you. He didn't have the patience or concern to do either.
The only thing that concerned him was Yukina and wondering if she'd ever called off her search for him. He still hadn't returned her stone, not being able to close that door himself. His days were spent fighting and sleeping, he was content with his lot. Now someone had to get their ass bent out of shape and cause trouble. He didn't feel like playing the hero once more or helping that toddler out. Everytime he did he'd end up in some kind of jam, where he'd come close to dying for people that meant nothing to him.
The doors opened for them, he followed behind Mukuro and entered the large conference room. He was surprised to see not only Yomi and Koenma standing there but Shura, Kurama and Yusuke as well. None of them looked happy, what was going on? "Why aren't I surprised to see you two here?" He walked over to one of the chairs and sat down. He saw Yomi's shoulders bristle when he threw his feet up on the table.
Koenma cleared his throat trying to get everyone's attention, time was of the essence. "Thank you all for coming. I didn't want to repeat myself several times so I waited until we were all here to explain matters. As everyone here is now aware there is something descending from the sky and an attack has begun on the Makai. My father called me to his chambers and explained the situation. I will tell everyone what I was told and where we stand." Koenma saw everyone was listening then repeated everything his father had told him. Disbelief crossed everyone's face, some looked doubtful of what was being told. "I assure you that all you've just been told is true. I will know more upon my return. My father has asked that I retrieve the ones that will be needed to help if things turn bad."
"But didn't you just say that some of the lines have died out. How are you going to bring a dead people to help? Not like humans would come here to help us to begin with." Shura smirked seeing many flaws in the tale. It was unbelievable that it had happened, why would youkai feed off people that were once their allies. Koenma was grasping at straws wanting to believe it, because they didn't know what was really going on.
"Yeah, the kid has a point. What are you going to do? Not like you can travel back in time to get these people before they die again." Yusuke threw his hands behind his head, not sure if he liked the explanation. If these people were already dead then what could they do since Koenma said they needed to have thier original bodies.
"Actually, thats exactly what I intend to do Yusuke. You don't need to know how I plan to accomplish this. I'll just say that it is possible and I will retrieve them as soon as I leave here. Now, I will leave it up to Yomi to see to the panic being caused by this. I hope everyone here will do what they can to help. Let me make this clear, if this city is allowed into the Makai things will not bode well. Even all of you will be no match for what is to come. The Makai will be the first to fall under Takakami's rule. Also let me mention that him and his followers had a certain diet. I'll just say it wasn't humans, if you get my drift." Koenma knew that none of them liked being heard that they'd be served as lunch. They needed to understand how dire the situation was before they would take it seriously and stop being hardasses. "Yomi, I am leaving everything up to you until my return."
"Very well." Yomi sighed accepting responsibility. Just his luck something like this would happen during his reign as king. Maybe it was for the best, he'd rise to the challenge and make sure nothing destroyed the Makai. He sure wasn't going to let some evolved human threaten his home. He'd done his best to make sure that he'd win and become ruler. Enma said that him allowing youkai to cause mischief and kill had been the final straw to cause the seal to break. He hadn't enforced that law not having the same beliefs that Raizen and his friends had. Youkai had eaten humans for centuries why should he care if they still wanted to? Was he now being punished for his mistake?
Whatever had caused this to happen he would see to clearing things up. If fighting with humans is what caused it, then he'd deal with that after. First, they had to save all three worlds before trying to bridge that gap. Could it be possible that Raizen had been right all along in his belief that eating humans was wrong? It had been their way of life for so long, could it be changed? He would have to put his trust in Enma and Koenma for now. This team would do whatever it took to stop this from happening, he'd make sure if it.
Koenma stood in the empty shrine yard, feeling the loss that surrounded the place. The Higurashi Shrine had been abandoned ten years ago after the death of the old man. The woman and son had moved out of town not being able to maintain the place on their own. He knew it also had to do with the fact that the woman's daughter hadn't returned. Kagome Higurashi, one of the names on his list. He would have to find her in the past where she'd been doomed to remain after completing her journey. It was better this way, she hadn't been seen in seventeen years. He knew it was because during the final battle of the hanyou called Naraku much had been lost. Kagome had even lost her life, that was when she had been reborn. Then remained there, having no way to return home.
Fate was indeed a strange thing, it led her to the Descendants of Satsuki and Hashigawa. Both females ending up with the miko, the final line for all three ancestors. It made his job that much easier and he wouldn't have to repeat himself more than once. Now it was time to go fetch them. He stood in front of the Goshinboku tree, wand in hand. Enma had given him the Wand of Doors, an acient relic that had been tucked away. The power of it combined with the power of the tree would be enough to take him to the years he desired. The portal opened up, he jumped through leaving it to close behind him.

Enma saw that his son was very confused.
