Irreversible Psychological Damage

Tia: Hello! This was a little something I thought up while on the subway. It was a long ride and I didn’t have any paper! I had to write the whole thing in my head and try to remember it!

I don’t own Rin or Inuyasha or Sesshomaru or Koga or Kagome but I do own the Komotoko’s!

Inuyasha growled deep in his throat. Koga was really starting to piss him off. The stench of blood all around him was starting to make his head spin. Twitching his nose in irritation, he lunged at Koga. From behind him he heard Kagome scream, and saw Sango slicing a wolf in half from the corner of his eye. The two momentarily distracted him, and he faltered in his charge, stumbling while Koga stepped gracefully out of harms way.

“Fight me if you can, mutt!” Koga challenged, laughing all the while at Inuyasha’s clumsiness. All around bodies lay dead; the huts shot up in flames. It was a hideous sight, even for a half demon. But it was utterly soul destroying for a young human girl.

Rin remembered being so happy, just a moment ago. She had been skipping gaily (A/N minds OUT of the gutter, it means ‘happily’!) down the dirt path, thinking of the beautiful creature she had found. He looked like an angle. And he was hers. She had found him and nursed him, and it had made her so very happy. Now she wasn’t thinking of him. She couldn’t think at all. All she could do was stand there, starring at the mangled bodies and ruined homes of her village. She made no noise, even as the tears fell from her eyes. She was so still. Like a lone poplar tree in winter, obtruding against heaps of spruces. A growling sound reached her ears, shattering the stillness of the approaching evening. A wolf with dripping jaws was stalking slowly towards her. Rin backed away, her breathing beginning to quicken. She starred at the wolf, straight in the eye, striking dumb. All was strangely calm, the wolfs menacing growl the only sound besides the rustling trees, and wooden huts crackling in the flames.

The deep breathe before the plunge.

She whimpered softly. And then, all the pain churning inside her broke and she ran. In blind, uncontrollable fear brought on by passion, she fled, the animal hunting her with a howl. Rin chanced a look back, and her eyes widened at the sight. Three wolves were behind her, coming up fast. The forest rushed by her in a blur of green, the path before her looking long and unforgiving. Why hadn’t she run into the village? She realized her mistake now, but there was no way to turn around. All she could do was run…

It was no use, she was to slow. In a last attempt to save herself, she reached her arm up high, and felt the rough bark of an oak meet her fingers. She grabbed hold, pulling herself up over the branch. She clung to the tree. She moved to swing her leg up, when the wolves finally caught her. A sharp pain seared though her left leg, where a wolf had bitten down on her ankle. The beast pulled, and she felt the tree slipping away. The rough haven of safety being torn from her grip. She landed hard on her stomached, and she twisted around onto her back. No sooner had she raised her arms in defense, two wolves bore down on her. Rin screamed in protest and pain. She struggled wildly, kicking anything within reach. But the animals were stronger then ordinary wolves, enhanced by some form of demon power, and she was but a little girl. She was bleeding now; she could feel it’s warmth on her. Though she did not know where the wound lay, for she was throbbing in agony everywhere. A muddied paw hit her face, and she gasped for air. As she thrashed violently, a wolf pounced, tearing the young girl’s throat out.

Rin remembered screaming. Screaming so hard she thought for sure her voice would break. The image of blood and fur, teeth and jowls was imprinted on her mind. She opened heavy lids, and found herself in a black void. Empty save for the white wisps of clouds that hung in the air. But wasn’t she in the forest? She thought of the wolves and shuttered. Where was she? Rin took a cautious step forward, feeling about with her foot, before placing it down firmly. She took another step, and bumped into something warm and soft. Falling back onto the ground, Rin looked up, straining rto see in the dark. A figure melted out fro the shadows, into the eerie glow from the clouds. Brown eyes, brown hair, and a milky smooth face. Rin was looking at a mirror image of herself.

“Ahhhhhhh!” Rin screamed, more out of surprise then fear, and her mirror image cringed.

“Rin!” Said the rather irate double, with strange familiarity, and hands on her hips, “Don’t scream so! You’re giving me such a headache!”

Rin clamped her mouth shut, wondering if she ought to truly feel sorry. But the only emotion she could muster was a dazed, confused feeling. ‘Other Rin’ smiled at her, a warm look, used to try and make Rin feel more comfortable, although she made no effort to help Rin of the ground.

“Now Rin, you must listen.” The copy’s smile faded, to be replaced with a look of utmost importance, “We haven’t much time, and I’ve a good deal to explain.” With a sigh the copy continued, “When you die Rin, after the heart has stopped, the mind continues for about sixty seconds.” She puckered her face in a sour expression, “We’ve already wasted around twenty.” She knelt down to meet Rin’s eyes, and smiled lightly, “I am your mind Rin. Not a copy, but a part.”

Rin looked the ‘part’ up and down. She had on a Victorian style, navy blue jumper, with a white fanny apron over top. Her legs were covered in lace stockings of intricate design, and her feet were swathed in black ankle boots, tied up like skates. Her shoulder length hair was pulled back into a single French braid. The clothing was alien to Rin, but she liked them none the less.

“My name is Kokoro. And this…” She motioned with her head, “Is Heart.” Rin glanced over to see a figure emerge from the darkness. Her attention was drawn back to Kokoro at the sound of her voice.

“That,” She was saying, “Is Soul.”

Rin looked over to the left, and saw the third and final girl.

Soul’s hair was long, falling in curls around her heart shaped face. Her eyes were white, her lips a crimson red. She wore a flowing white silk gown that clung gracefully to her slender form, like pearls of mist hanging onto the harbor mornings. She was bare footed and sleeveless; her skin pale and smooth as velvet. She looked mysterious and full of danger. While at the same time, warm and free.

Heart’s fresh face and blushing cheeks were framed with two brown braids, ending at either shoulder, on the sides of her head. She wore a baby pink kimono that reached down to her ankles; where upon loose fitting, tan leather sandals adorned her feet. The kimono was decorated with Sakura blossoms of a slightly darker pink, and a wide pale pink ribbon lay wound her waist, ending in a big beautiful bow at the small of her back.

All three girls were identical to Rin, and yet so different.

Heart, mind and soul, Rin thought. They were her Komotokos.

“We have to tell you what’s coming Rin, dearest.” Mind said solemnly. “For you have a journey before you.”

Rin looked up into her face, with a look that asked for her to say more. Kotoko seated herself in front of Rin.

“When you leave us, you must find your way to Coven. It is a beautiful place, where all souls must go. Once there, you will be safe from wandering spirits, demons and all necromancers. But it’s a perilous road, you may not succeed.”

Rin listened intently, realizing all the while what had happened. She was dead.

Dead.

“Rin,” Kotoko leaned forward, touching Rins hand. “Can you do this?”

Rin felt her nose tingle, and hastily blinked away coming tears. She nodded once. Kotoko smiled slightly.

“Good. There is a tunnel, Haven Cove lies just beyond that. But you have to leave the tunnel at the right place. Let the wind take you, don’t fight it.”

Rin was nodding with wide eyes, trying to take it all in. She couldn’t be dead, she was still so young! It wasn’t right…

Kotoko gripped her arm, “Rin, dearest, we will not be able to help you. When you leave your body, we will be left behind to fade out of existence. But if you arrive at Haven safely, you can wait there to be reborn, with new Komotoko’s. Alright?” She smiled then, an encouraging look, then let go of her arm. She stood up and took a step back away from Rin. Rin sniffed and struggled up onto her own feet. She shivered as a passing wind hit her. She noticed Heart and Soul looking skyward, and looked up as well. She couldn’t see anything but for a pale, pulsing light. But the light had not been there before.

“Time’s up.” Soul said, gazing up into the dark abyss.

“Good bye.” Heart smiled sadly, and Rin felt a stab of guilt for leaving them, and another wave of nausea from knowing they would no longer be with her. Although she had only known of there existence for the last minute of her life, she knew she would feel incomplete without them. Rin thought about it, and opened her mouth to ask them to stay, to tell them she wanted them to be with her, but the sound never left her throat, as a massive updraft erupted from below, grabbing her frail form and whipping it away from the ground.

Rin didn’t scream, she couldn’t, so beyond fear was she. All around her was blackness. The speed she was rising at combined with the powerful wind prevented her from even opening her eyes. She pulled her legs into her chest, rolling herself into a ball as she was wrenched about. Something hard and brittle hit her shoulder, and she felt warm liquid leaking from the wound. She flung her head upwards, and pried her eyes open. She was in the tunnel, she was certain of it. It was horizontal and she was being dragged through, the wind pushing her from below, swelling around her. It was almost impossible to see the black granite wall; it blended into the darkness so perfectly. But the cut in her shoulder told her that the wall was there. Rin couldn’t see an end to the tunnel, and a sudden panic gripped her. She couldn’t keep going, she had to stop, she just had to. She reached out desperately, and grabbed hold of the wall. She screamed in frustration and dismay as the wall was torn from her grip, the wind and thrust tilting her at an odd angle. Sobbing now, she tried again, grabbed the wall, and held fast! Both small hands clasped the rock, her delicate fingers growing white from strain. The current of air continued to hold her, pulling and pushing with ferocious tugs. She was upside down, but she would. Not. Let. Go. A coil of air hit her, then winded off to the side. In that instant, Rin lowered herself onto the rock. She hooked her legs around a ledge that jutted out, and clutched her body to it. Her eyes were watering and her hair whipped about her dizzy head. She didn’t know how long she stayed there, gasping, crying in distress. Other spirits were being pulled around in the same fashion as her, some letting the wind take them, others fighting it as she had done. Rin remembered her mind telling her to let go, but she couldn’t, she was too frightened. Instead, she felt around numbly, and gasped when her fingers touched an opening in the wall. It was a small crevice, and she could tell it widened out further down. Slowly and carefully she pulled herself into the opening, pressing against the wall. She crawled inside, and tumbled through. She felt herself land, felt the wind ebb away. She lay there for some time, not moving or opening her eyes.

Thud

Rin stiffened at the sound of shuffling feet. She strained her ears for more sound, realizing how vulnerable she was laying there. Slowly, she rolled over, and sat back on her haunches. She lost her balance and fell back. As she fell, she caught a blur of movement out of the corner of her eye. She sucked in her breath. Something was there.

Thud

There it was again, this time behind her. Rin twisted her torso around, still sitting on the cold floor.

“What are you doing here?”

Rin jumped and bit her lip to quell the scream she knew was coming. Slowly, she turned back towards the voice.

A beautiful lady was standing before her. She was dressed in a raw silk blood red gown. Rin gawked at the lady; she was breath-taken. The lady smiled at her and held out her hand. Rin felt herself being drawn to her smooth face and blue eyes. Rin waited as the lady glided over to her. When she reached Rin, the lady bend down on one knee. Rin saw small white toes peak out from beneath the many thin layers of silk. Rin was dazed. She leaned forward, pressing her forehead against the lady’s. Blonde curls engulfed her and Rin felt content to stay there forever. Then she felt something cold bite her leg.

“Ow!” Rin gave a muffled cry and jumped back from the lady. She felt her leg and felt no bite mark. The lady was still smiling, but it’s charm and dazing effect had leaked away. Rin saw more beautiful women behind the lady’s shoulder. She watched them come closer and closer. She felt no fear then, they were too beautiful to be terrifying. Rin stared into the first lady’s blue eyes. The lady smiled and moved her lips to form the silent word ‘come’. She beckened with her fingers and moved her lips over and over to the word. Rin struggled to her feet, whipping away old tears. She followed the lady over to the others, and they formed a circle around her.

Rin took a deep breath and smelt the scent of wild roses. She giggled and breathed deeply, squeezing her eyes shut so all she was aware of was the gorgous smell. Then she felt the cold sting on her arm. Rin’s eyes flew open and she screamed in horror. The beautiful women’s faces had morphed into hideous snarls. Rin watched in utter terror as they lovely creatures melted into squat, slimy toads. They were disgusting, and she was trapped. The circle tightened as the stalked towards her. In a single motion they lunged at her. Rin screamed and screamed and screamed. They ripped at her hair and clawed her face. Rin no longer saw them as they were. She saw furred animals. To her they were all wolves, sweaty and strong. She felt her ankle swell and the warm blood on her again. She was dying again…

A blinding white light blasted out from somewhere behind the craxed mob. The toads shrieked in pain and fear. Rin struggled to push the creatures away from her, and she felt them go. They ran now, and she knew not why. Then the light flared up again on Rin saw the blade of a tremendous sword slice down upon the toad creatures. Rin squinted threw the light, trying to see her savior. An invisible force tugged at Rins waist. She was being pulled back, away from the light. No! she thought. She had to see who he was before she…

Rin flew back through the walls, flying back into the black tunnel.

“Wait!” Rin cried out indesperation, and then…

Rin groggily opened her eyes. She heard the twiter if birds above her head. Sloely, she rolled over, groaning at the pain in her side. She was in the forest, where she had been when the wolves attacked. Someone put their arms around her and haled her upwards. Rin starred into an emotionless face.

“Lord Sesshomaru!” A squeaky voiced toad demon was talking to the emotionless man. Rin blinked. Then she wiggled her fingers. The movement felt different, stiff, like she hadn’t moved her fingers in a while. A realization shot through Rins mind. She looked skyward and saw swirls of smoke emitting from a village. Her village

Alive. Rin thought, I’m alive.

Very strange I know. But my imagination was in a random frame of mind.
