Disclaimer:I don't own or profit from Inuyasha or Yu Yu Hakusho nor any of the characters from it. This disclaimer will go for all the chapters contained in this story.
A/N: This is a xover and will be a Kagome/Kurama pairing. I got an idea of who Sango will be paired with but it's not concrete yet. Warning: My stories contain a lot of angst, hence the warning in the summary. I put it there for a reason. So please take it seriously. Other than that I hope you enjoy.
Chapter One
The ringing of the telepone echoed off the walls in the small office. Kurama stared at the cordless phone sitting on the desk. He'd come into his stepfather's office to retrieve some paperwork, since the man was out to lunch. He ignored it for the first twenty rings before the shrill sound soon got on his nerves. Maybe he'd just take a message, "Hello."
"Um hello. Did I dial the wrong number again? I'm looking for Mr. Hatanaka, is he in?"
Kurama looked out the door to see his step-father walking towards him. "Yes, please hold a moment." He waited for the man to come in and smiled. "Theres a lady on the phone for you." He watched the man sit down in his chair.
"Hello. It's been a long time. Yeah understandable, I can hear him in the background. Is he still upset? Sorry, I didn't call this weekend I got tied up."
Kurama lifted his brow not sure if he wanted to know who the woman was on the other end of the phone. They'd only been married for a few years, he didn't think the man was capable of cheating.
"How is she doing? Glad to hear it, I've been worried about her. Since that old man gave me a hard time the last time I called about not visiting. The time before that she was still in the hospital not allowed visitors. Sorry, I haven't been able to visit since getting married but things have been hectic." There was a long pause before he spoke again. "Nonsense, I won't even hear of it. I'm glad to hear that she wants to try and get out on her own. Let me take care of it, there's plenty of affordable places around here. It's the least I can do, yes I'm sure. Is she going to need a live-in nurse? That's great, atleast she won't be alone. I'll give you a call back tonight. Just make sure that old man doesn't answer the phone." He hung up the phone and looked at his stepson.
"Everything okay?"
"Yes, that was my sister. Seems her daughter wants to move out here, you'll be meeting her soon." He grabbed the telephone book flipping through the pages.
"I didn't realize you had a sister."
He looked up at Shuichi and frowned, "My sister is the only one I speak to anymore. My father's side of the family came from a long line of monks and priests. They owned a shrine, which I grew up on. Well when I got old enough, he wanted me to follow in his footsteps. Needless to say I didn't, I've always dreamed of being a business owner. In his own way he disowned me, not that it matters. When my sister eventually married he turned the shrine over to her and her new husband. They've lived at the Higurashi shrine ever since. I've went a few times to visit when the kids were younger. My father is still displeased with me, I try to ignore him for my sister's sake. The last time I went to visit was before your mother and I got married. I was hoping to see Kagome but I was informed that she was in the hospital and she wasn't allowing visitors. The poor girl has been sickly for many years."
"I see, guess I will see you at dinner tonight." Kurama saw him nod as he thumbed through the apartment section.
"Shuichi, can you hand me the plates please?"
"Of course mother." He dug into the cabinet pulling out four plates for dinner. Dialing was heard coming from the living room. Seemed his stepfather had already spoken to his mother about his plans. The man wanted to set his new cousin and her friend up in an apartment not far from here. He was also going to pay for the first lease in full.
Mr. Hatanaka dialed the number putting it on speaker as he thumbed through the paperwork in his hands. He'd stopped by a complex down the street and found the perfect place for the girls. Someone picked up the phone on the second ring.
"Hello." A young girl's voice came over the line.
"Hello Kagome, how are you feeling?" He spoke loud enough for the girl to hear.
"I'm great, oops Gramps is coming. Get off the line."
An old wiry voice came out the speaker, "Now you listen here, you ungrateful brat. You stay away from your sister and her children. They know the importance of our bloodline, don't make me put a ward on you."
"You know they don't work Gramps, why don't you just threaten to slap toilet paper on his forehead? Hang on, I'll get Mom." Kagome put her end down. "Mom!"
"Get off the phone father, I didn't call to speak to you."
"I know what you're trying to do. Trying to take Kagome away after we just got her back." The old man started screaming into the speaker. Causing Shiori to wince at the noise.
"Sorry about that, dad get off the phone please." Mrs. Higurashi's voice came on sounding displeased. "Sango dear, will you go get the phone from Gramps please. Thank you."
The old man could be heard screaming, "Give that back girl, how dare you." The connection was disconnected leaving just the siblings on the line.
"Was that the friend that's coming? I think I'll like her." His laughter echoed through the living room. "Tell Kagome that Shiori and I have everything taken care of. Just have them come by here first when they get into town. I can't wait to see her again, tell Souta he'll have to come visit soon also."
Kurama heard a few other words and finished helping his mother set the table. Dinner was full of conversation between his mother and stepbrother. The younger man told them all he could remember about his cousins. She was a year older than Shuuichi, which put her at nineteen. In his human form she was two years younger than him. They didn't know anything about the girl that would be coming along with her.
He finished up his dinner when he felt Hiei waiting for him in his room. He excused himself and put his dishes up. The small man was waiting for him sitting on the bed, "Evening Hiei."
"Hn. Whats all the excitement about? I could hear your family from up here."
"Seems my cousin is moving near that's all. So what brings you here?" Kurama leaned against the door.
"The next tournament will be in a year. Are you going to attend this one?"
"No, I don't think I will. I am happy here for now, I assume you will be though." Kurama saw him nod then leave. He sighed and went to close his window for the night. He was suppose to have lunch with Yusuke and Kuwabara tomorrow.
