Chapter One
The sun was sinking in the sky, painting the once blue expanse in shades of gold and crimson. The young priestess leaned on her broom and watched the colors wistfully. It made her heart ache to know that Inuyasha was out there somewhere. Was her injured? Was he thinking of her, of the promise he had made the day he all but gave her away? She hadn't been happy to know that he alone went to vanquish Naraku, but in time she had come to accept his decision. It was his duty and there were some things that he just had to do alone.
They had uncoverered the villian's plot too late, his intent to trap the girl in the fuedal era. He believed that her power came from the old wooden shaft. She of all of his enemies, he feared the most. She had the power to harm him, make him weak , make the dog demon stronger. She was the one he dealt with first. All of his efforts had proved fruitless in the past, attacking her person was far too difficult. He'd attack something of value to her, the one thing she seemed to have to return to. Then he woulod break her.
Inuyasha and Kagome had stood before the charred remains of the well and she had wept, unable to return home to her family and world. There was nothing left, the earthen shaft collapsed and lost to her. She was more afraid at that moment that she had ever been. She would be forced to make a life for herself here. Inuyasha felt lower than the dirt they stood on. He would help they all would.
She had trembled and sobbed and he did the only thing he could. He held her. He had held her as her tears had fallen, soothed and comforted as best he knew. Her pain lanced through him, as sharp and clear at his brother's poison claws. He would kill the culprit he would kill the bastard Naraku who had trapped her here. Although in some respects he was pleased that she could no longer leave him. It was what he had wanted in the end, true, but not like this. Never like this. She had fought him when he told her he would go alone, she had struck him with her tiny fists, singed his ears with all the words she had learned from him and then some.
In the end he had rolled to the ground with her, pinning her beneath the weight of his body. "Shhh, Kagome...don't cry. I'm sorry about the well. Don't worry, I'll take care of you." he had murmured to her. Her breathing still choppy from her tears she locked eyes with him, and he had closed the distance, capturing her lips in a kiss so gentle, so tender that fresh tears had pricked her eyes. Inuyasha knew what he had to do, it was a decision that left a bitter taste in his mouth. Be would go alone and protect his friends, in his absence there was only one who was strong enough to do that. Inuyasha moved away from her and helped her stand, "I will leave word with Sesshoumaru. You must obey him Kagome, he will keep you safe while I am gone." If he doesn't kill her first. I just have to get his word.
Then he had been gone. She didn't know where or for how long. The following day the demon lord had appeared at Kaede's hut. She regarded him warily and he seemed bored. "Inuyasha has told me that you can no longer go home." he said bluntly and she nodded, gritting her teeth against the tears. "You will gather your belongings and accompany me to the western palace.". Kagome stiffened. "I would rather stay here with Kaede." she said softly. He shot her an icy look, "Miko, I did not ask what you wanted. I have told you what will be done.". She forgot her fear for a moment and scowled at him. "Who do you think you are?" she demanded and for once a small smile graced his exquisite features. Before she could react he had clasped her chin in a clawed hand tilting her head back to hold his gaze, "I , Miko, am your lord and master... by my brother's insistence.".
Kagome's earth brown eyes widened at his words. No that couldn't be, Inuyasha would never! But in her heart she knew, knew that the stoic lord would never lie and the hanyou's words came back to her. You must obey Sesshoumaru, he will keep you safe while I am gone. She shook her head and he let his hand drop. "I appreciate your protection, but I am in training as a priestess and need to be here in the village. The Taiyoukai regarded her a moment in silence, he seemed to be pondering the weight of the universe. "Miko. I will allow you to spend some of your days here in the village but you will take your place in my house. You should be grateful that I am considering your feelings at all in the matter.". She swallowed tightly, he was right she supposed and she wouldn't argue. With a stiff nod she turned and entered the hut.
She emerged a moment later with her large yellow pack. He said nothing as he held his hand out to her. She reached for it hesitantly. How can I do this? This is Sesshoumaru! This is what Inuyasha wanted. This can't be, it has to be a trick..... it isn't. "Kagome!" came an alarmed female voice, jerking her out of her silent argument with herself. She turned to see Sango round the corner, hiraikotsu in her hand. "What is going on?" she demanded, pinning the demon with a hot glare. Sesshoumaru merely latched onto Kagome's wrist and drew her against him, his demon cloud beginning to swirl around them. "It's ok Sango." Kagome told her, though she wasn't sure it was. He finally spoke to Sango, "Slayer, so long as you cause no trouble in my house I will permit you to see the Miko." Sango could only watch dumbfounded as they rose high into the air.
Months had passed and still Inuyasha did not return. In that time many things had happened. Sesshoumaru had at first ignored her, acknowledging her presence only when he collected her from the village each night. She was certain that if rain hit him in that time that it would have frozen on contact. Then came the inevitable disputes. They started over everything and nothing, he demanded her submission, she refused to be cowed. He snarled at her, she shouted at him, he tackled her, she hit him in the nose. He towered over her, she glared up at him duly unimpressed. He chased her through his garden, she shot a sacred arrow at him! He tried a different approach, he coaxed, she accepted and he began to see how alike they were. They both hated to follow orders. He remembered a time when he ordered her to her room in aggravation and she defied him. He had growled quite menacingly and damned if the woman hadn't growled right back!
As time went on they had become accustomed to one another's presence. They ceased facing off over every issue and the overall stability of the house returned. They often spent evenings in his vast library speaking quietly of many things or sometimes he would listen as she told his human ward tales of magic and wonder. He liked the story of the beast the best, though he would never admit such a thing. It was also Rin's favorite and so he heard it often enough. A lovely maiden and a great hairy beast. Not that he was hairy outside of true form.
It has been only recently that he began to let his eyes trail over her slim fingers and they stroked the child's hair or the way her eyes were infinitely soft when they were together. His mate, his human mate. The same weakness of his father, of his brother, of his bloodline. It did not sit well with him, but he was not about to give up anything that belonged to him.
To say that the transition into his home was easy would not be true and the explanation of her circumstances hadn't helped. For several weeks after that, it seemed that they constantly battled for authority. She was unwilling to bend to his orders and he was unwilling to stop giving them. She had been hurt and angry over the decisions that had been made without her and she let him know it. He began to wonder just what it was that kept Inuyasha from gagging her for a moment's peace. Slowly, they had learned to compromise and true colors began to peek through. It was not long after, that a grudging respect had formed between them, followed by polite concern and that had blossomed into friendship of a type. It was more now. And masked beneath it all, remained the hidden desire to possess that lurked in his heart.
As a dog demon he was instinctively protective of those near him, it was his duty to protect and guard, the fact that he was a lord only added the contrast of refinement to his animal actions. As an Inu youkai he was dominant, a leader and he commanded respect and obedience of those he regarded as his pack. For Kagome it was somewhat different. As his mate, his bitch she was allowed dominance of her own so long as she didn't try to override his own. He would command and she would submit, it was the way of things. Every creature in nature knew this... all but one and the fates had seen fit to drop her at his feet.
She had hissed and spat and hurled bawdy insults at him more than a few times. Those times when she considered him to be overbearing and controlling. She failed to understand that he was designed to behave so....as was her precious hanyou. He supposed in time she would learn and adapt her habits to theirs. He enjoyed the fire in her soul, the spice that she brought to his life, the heat she raised in his blood...now if only he could temper that. Still, they had come a very long way, though he often wondered who had changed more.
She had been at his side on many occasions, working in his garden, taking correspondence, nursing a sick Rin, social events when demon lords and ladies gathered. She had never failed to amaze him with her versatility and her warmth. She had very few critics left in the demon noble circle. In fact the old dragon lord and his ancient wife had taken such a liking to her that they demanded he mark her! His guards fawned over her, making him jealous and Rin was at her side, where he longed to spend his days. It seemed to him that they went out of their way to point out her appeal. Meddlesome... every last one of them. He had finally given into his desire to touch when he had gone patrolling. She chased him into the courtyard bellowing her displeasure at being left behind. The servants wisely made themselves scarce for Sesshoumaru was legend for his temper. After the day's display, his little lady was a force to reckoned with as well. "Why can't I go?" she demanded of him. He continued walking, "I have told you, you may not go.". His voice was cool, emotionless like his expression and it pissed her off.
Kagome had clenched her fists at her sides, "I am not your servant to order around! You can't keep me locked up here! You are no better than Inuyasha, always bossing me around. Boy I wish I could sit you!". At her words he spun faster than she could react and he almost smirked at her wide eyes when she found herself pinned between the hard length of the courtyard pillar and the equally hard length of a very angry demon. The impact drew a small "Eep!" from her lips. Did he have to be so tall and well... so big? His golden eyes narrowed to dangerous slits, his clawed hands buried in the wood on either side of her head. She was caged by striped wrists and flashing fangs. "I know who I am Kagome, it seems that it is you who have forgotten your place. Perhaps I should remind you ne?".
He pressed his hips against hers as he spoke and her eyes went impossibly wide. Her scent carried anger and a hint of fear, but what was this.... faint arousal as well? Dropping his lips to mere inches from hers he spoke again, "I am your lord, you are to be my mate. It is your duty to obey me and it is mine to see you safe. I will not explain these things to you again Miko. You will go inside and see to my house and our ward in my absence.". Kagome opened her mouth to speak but he silenced her, slashing his lips against hers. Kagome gasped at the contact and he used the action to his advantage slipping his tongue between her lips in what was her first kiss of the kind. His tongue slid against hers and she felt her knees go to jelly, he wrapped his arm around her to steady her and pull her closer. She whimpered against his lips, her scent spiking and he abruptly released her.
Kagome sagged against the pillar, her lips rosy and swollen. Sesshoumaru grunted in purely male satisfaction at his handywork. Her fingers moved to her lips and he watched confusion light in her eyes. "What is it now Miko? Have I overwhelmed you?" he asked half teasing. She took a deep steadying breath, "That - that was my first true kiss." she stammered out defensively. His brow raised, "Is that right? It won't be your last I am certain." Then he strode away to patrol, his final thought on the matter....Inuyasha is an idiot.
He recalled the deal that had been struck between brothers that fateful night. I haven't claimed her.... but I want her to be mine. I have nothing to offer her, and now her world is gone as well. I have to make this right, I don't care if you understand or not. Will you take her for me? Will you keep her safe? If anything happens and I don't return you must keep her, keep her happy, keep her safe. She won't make it here without someone strong beside her. Will you do this for me? The lord had said nothing at first, the miko had tempted many things from him, death, desire, and now protection. At last he answered his sibling, I will bring her into my house and extend my protection to her Inuyasha. She will belong to this house. As the alpha and the heir of this clan I have the right to take her as wholly mine for doing these things.
Inuyasha knew that, understood it. I know. I will fight you for her if I must upon my return but you cannot be my priority right now, neither can she. Sesshoumaru had taken no offense to the comment but held his brother's stare unwaveringly, at last he finally offered the solution. You will not fight me Inuyasha, should you die I will mark and mate her as mine alone, should you survive the duty will fall to both of us. Inuyasha's head shot up and he mouthed silent questions. Sesshoumaru chuckled darkly, Why the surprise little brother, surely you recall demon lords of the same house sharing a mate. It is not so very uncommon.
Inuyasha nodded, he knew of the practice but for two inu youkai to attempt it was not likely to succeed. Won't work. Our kind are too dominant, we will end up killing each other and besides Kagome would never agree to such a thing. The demon lord grunted, I assure you that dominance issues can easily be solved, it will merely require compromise and control on our parts, as for the onna... she will agree. He was certain of it, he knew she loved his brother and in time he was quite certain that she could grow to love him too. He merely had to foster those feelings. Inuyasha's absense would do nicely. Of course he preferred to be aboveboard about the situation with the Miko. It would male things so much easier in the end.
He had observed that when given the truth, she usually chose wisely. Now he simply had to keep himself from claiming her before the hanyou returned. You will leave at once? Inuyasha had nodded, yes I think so. You won't hurt her will you? Sesshoumaru growled at him I would not intentionally harm my mate and that is what she is Inuyasha, though she is unaware for now. I will tell her in due time, before your return. I shall collect her tomorrow, Naraku is not a fool and since he has destroyed the well, I have no doubts he will come for her soon. You deal with the half breed and I shall deal with the girl. Inuyasha had departed then, warmth in his heart that Kagome was his and his father's house would once more be whole. It had never mattered to him before, but he was to have a mate now and she needed a home for her pups.
