The Pure Heart of a Child
Chapter 1: Listen to My Story
Kagome held her tears back as she hugged Sango one last time. The battle was finally over and things were going to get back to normal, or, at least, as normal as they could be considering many lives were shattered by Naraku and his evil.
Kagome took a step back and let her eyes go over her friends again. Miroku gave her a brotherly smile and nodded strongly to her, taking Sango’s hand in his. Shippou was crying softly, trying to be brave and not make it harder for Kagome to say goodbye. Kirara sat next to him, lending her silent support to him. “Merow.” She said, nodding to Kagome.
She looked over them and the sadness hit her in the pit of her stomach again. Inuyasha would not be here to say goodbye this time, and she would not be coming back to have him hover over the well again, waiting for her to return.
She roughly brushed away a stray tear, and concentrated, holding the jewel tightly in her hands. She paused as Sesshoumaru walked forward, a limp Rin in his arms. His Tenseiga had been lost somewhere in the battle, and was sucked in by Miroku’s wind tunnel, thus he lost his ability to bring her back, although her body was quite intact.
Kagome saw his anguish in his eyes and walked to him, patting his arm and nodding to him. “She will live again, Sesshoumaru. I promise. Just wait a little longer.” She said, her eyes sparkling with unshed tears.
“Midoriko…I’m ready to make a wish.” She said, and everyone watched her apprehensively. “Child…what is it that you desire?” the woman’s voice came back to her, floating gently over the clearing.
“I wish…for the happiness and safety of everyone whom I have come in contact with in this time, for as long as they each roam the earth, and for each and every life they are reincarnated in.” she said softly, clasping the jewel again, sending her pure energy into it, making it shine brighter with hidden power.
As the power shot out, it healed Sesshoumaru’s lost arm, while also reviving Rin. It cleared the area of impurities, and helped the lost souls of the warriors go on in peace, ensuring that their next lives would be much safer than in this time. The power swirled around her and floated in different directions, reaching everyone she had met, and alerted them to her presence.
“You wish has been granted, Child. Now you know what you must do.” Midoriko said, sighing heavily. The girl would have to sacrifice even more before everything was said and done.
Kagome hung her head, hiding her tears from everyone’s sight. “I have to go back to my own time.” She hung her head further, remembering that those were Inuyasha’s exact words to her so very long ago.
“Goodbye, everyone. If I don’t see you again, remember that I love each and every one of you, with all my heart. Maybe we’ll meet in another lifetime. Maybe.” Then she stepped back, taking in their features one last time, before she fell back into the well.
Kagome cried as she landed on her back in the well in her time. She looked up to see a dark wood roof and steep sides to the old bone eaters well.
She didn’t want to move, moving was painful on her mind and on her body. She was exhausted physically and mentally, and she couldn’t help but wonder if anyone would notice if she never moved.
“Kagome!” She heard her little brother’s voice cry out, and she cried harder. “It’s really over…I will never get to go back…” she sobbed, her bag clutched at her side. The jewel glowed softly in her hand before the light extinguished itself, becoming a dull pink in her hand.
“Kagome! Kagome? Are you alright?!” he shouted, jumping down into the well next to her. She hugged him tightly, her heart ripping into shreds. She missed them already, all her friends. It hurt more than anything Naraku could throw at her, not being able to see her friends again. Souta helped her to her feet and she subconsciously climbed up the ladder and out of the well house. It was a bright, sunny day outside, the complete opposite of the feelings in her heart.
She ran into her mother’s outstretched arms and held her sobbing daughter close. It hurt to lose friends, but it hurt more to lose a love, and Kagome had lost her Inuyasha. Her mother thought that they would end up together, but such was not the case. Kagome wasn’t so much upset about Inuyasha as she was her friends. He chose his fate, and in the end, fate was chosen for her.
Kagome stopped her tears late into the night, sleep and exhaustion finally claiming her, shielding her from the pain temporarily.
The days passed slowly, and soon, a day turned into a week, a week into a month, and a month into two, then three, six, nine, a year. Each day that passed her by, she grew stronger. She ended up at the bottom of the well frequently, the Shikon no Tama bouncing around her neck, a strength spell on the chain so she would never lose it.
Today, was an exception. Kagome was celebrating her graduation of High School. She had made it, with flying colors no less. Colleges were sending her applications left and right, her mother was so happy she was absolutely giddy planning her graduation party, and Souta was avoiding her, having a feeling she would be leaving them for college soon, and not really liking the idea of her leaving again. Her grandfather dotted on her with strange artifacts, all of which were precious to her now that she had experienced the past for herself.
She sat underneath the Goshinboku in the family shrine, contemplating nothing in particular. She sighed to herself, a sadness building in her just from being in that particular spot. She looked up and could picture Inuyasha pinned to the tree, and a centipede demon crushing them together. She shook the images away, getting to her feet.
“I’m going for a walk, Momma!” she shouted to the older woman, who was sweeping the steps of the shrine, still in full momma mode for the party to take place the upcoming weekend.
“Okay, Kagome! Come back before it gets dark, okay?” she shouted back, smiling brightly. “I’ll try, Momma. See you later!” she shouted, sprinting down the steps, heading for the park. Things around the house were just so busy and tense. She couldn’t take it anymore.
She let her feet to the leading, as her mind wandered over the past, her friends gracing her thoughts yet again. They were always on her mind, they never ceased to be in her train of thought. “How are you guys doing without me? Are you all okay?” she questioned aloud, slumping down underneath another tree. She let her teeth bite down on a stick of rock candy she was eating, enjoying the sugar as it melted on her tongue.
“This was Shippou’s favorite candy, other than strawberry pocky.” She said aloud, looking up into the tree and visualizing Inuyasha again, her heart clenching slowly. Kagome ignored the aura of demon she felt. It was unusual now to feel an energy as powerful as the one she was feeling, but she dismissed it. After coming back to her time, she had become more aware of how many demons actually existed in her time. It was strange she never noticed them before, but she was unphased. The demon watching her, however, felt just a little curious about the human before him. He stared at her and listened to her strange sentences to herself. He sniffed the air and his eyes widened involuntarily.
‘She holds the Shikon no Tama! And her energy is that of a miko…who is that human?’ he thought, his focus now entirely on her.
She frowned, noticing the spike change in the demon’s energy. ‘What’s that demon doing? This is unusual…’ she thought, looking over to the energy signature. The demon drew back as the girl looked at him, her eyes full of jumbled emotions. He stared back at her, and her eyes finally met his as he sat in the tree. Kagome was taken back to say the least, he was short, but he had really tall jet black hair. His eyes held a tint of lust to them, but were otherwise quite unreadable.
She smiled, her mind and heart clicking as one for the first time in a long time. ‘A demon, interested in me…that’s unusual since…before…’ she pushed down the thoughts of the past, relaxing back against the tree. He watched her dismiss him, and it made him slightly angry. ‘What’s she doing, turning her back on me! I may just kill her just to prove a point!’ But he knew he would never kill a human. He was being punished for long enough without getting his sentence elongated for the worthless killing of a human woman.
“My name is Kagome.” She said, looking back to him, her soft voice floating over the space between them. He almost fell out of the tree at her statement.
“You shouldn’t offer information freely, ningin.” He said, leaning back in his own tree, taking the casual look.
“And you shouldn’t stare. It’s impolite.” She said, looking over to him a moment before relaxing back into her tree. He looked quickly to her. No one had back talked him in a long while, unless they wanted to be killed, and this ningin had the gall to! She would prove most entertaining. He would let her live…for now.
“You shouldn’t talk to strangers.”
“You should take your own advice.”
He paused, mulling her words over, then came back, “You should know who you are talking to before you get cocky.”
“I know I’m talking to a demon, so I’m not that worried. Your aura isn’t malicious, another reason for me not to be up in arms.” She replied, hiding her smirk at his incredulous look.
‘She knows of demons…who IS this girl?’ he thought, looking at her again, taking in her features.
“Not malicious…how can you be so sure?” he asked, trying to deepen his voice in order to scare the girl.
“Its not hard, you see. Your aura is swirling around you, a little chaotically, but its still there.” Kagome paused getting to her feet, wiping the dirt from her skirt. Hiei narrowed his eyes at her as she stood, but calmed as she didn’t move. Kagome looked closer into the tree, her aura pulsing around her and testing his own.
‘What’s she doing?!’ he thought quickly, pushing back against her pure aura.
“Don’t worry. I was just seeing what else your aura could tell…” she paused, her eyes widening in shock and pain. The demon looked to her again, his eyes widening. ‘What’s that look…?’
“Fire…and Ice…kami…” she said, bringing her hand to her lips. “You have both elements in your body…how is that possible?” she questioned, making his eyes go wide. ‘She could tell that from my aura…she is not a normal human…not even a normal miko…only other demons could tell of my blood from my aura, and I’m even masking my power…how could she tell?’ he thought, his eyes full of confusion.
Kagome waited for a response from the demon. He seemed to be frozen in time, his face a puzzle of emotions she couldn’t decipher. “Hello? Are you okay?” she asked, taking a step towards him.
He looked to her voice and noticed her step and growled in warning. Kagome stopped walking, and stared at him. “Are you okay?” she asked again, looking worriedly to him.
“Hn. You shouldn’t concern yourself, ningin. I am fine.” He said, turning from her. Kagome frowned. “You could call me by my name. It’s Kagome. Please use it.” She said, taking a deep breath.
He looked to her again, an incredulous look on his face. ‘No one orders me around, no one.’
“I’ll call you whatever I like, ningin. I don’t take orders from humans.” He said, his voice back to normal.
“It wasn’t an order, just a simple request. I’m sorry you took it that way.” She said, hiding her anger. She didn’t want to get on the wrong foot with him. He was the first person she had really talked to since she came back, and she somehow felt some strange comfort in his presence, no matter how conflicted he was.
He looked to her soft voice again and frowned. ‘Sorry? A human, apologizing to me? A miko, at that? Who is this girl?’ he asked again, replying with a, “Hn.”
“May I have your name?” she asked, taking her seat again.
“No.” he replied. He didn’t expect to see her again, so it didn’t matter what his name was, and she certainly didn’t deserve to know anything about him other than what her powers had gotten already. That alone was enough to irk him.
“Okay. Fair enough.” She nodded and looked back to the tree tops. ‘She’s not normal…normal humans would be pestering me and getting on my nerves more than she is. What is up with this human?’
“Uhm…I have…a favor…to ask you…will you listen?” she asked, looking to him again.
‘That’s it, this girl has gone too far, asking me for anything. We just met! What’s the girl want?’ he thought quickly, masking his outrage.
Kagome felt his energy spike and winced, getting his attention. “I’m sorry I made you angry. Don’t be mad at me.” She said, hanging her head.
Hiei looked to her again, puzzlement on his face. He wanted to shout and slash at her, but he found he couldn’t. His body didn’t seem to want to be mad at her.
“What is it you want, ningin?” he asked, sighing. ‘Maybe it’ll be something impossible, that way I can leave and never talk to this strange human again.’ He thought, looking to her.
“Just that…I want you to listen. Will you listen…to my story?” Kagome said, not understanding why it seemed so vital for her to share her story with him. Somehow, it felt right, to talk to him, something told her, that he would listen, and he wouldn’t condemn her for it. Her story would be heard, and he wouldn’t hate her, and he wouldn’t think she was lying. He would believe her story, and that was enough for her. No one else could know of her past. No one else would understand. He was a demon. He would understand enough. That was enough to give her the courage to ask.
“Listen?” he repeated, looking to her. She nodded, her eyes finally meeting his. He read her mind like an open book, his Jagan itching to take a dive into her mind. Hiei was curious when the Jagan floated over to her, wanting to explore the depths of her mind. He pulled it back, knowing that, strange miko or not, she wouldn’t enjoy him just going through her memories.
“It’s exactly what I want.”
Hiei jumped up, surprise on his face. “I want you to listen to my story. No one else knows, except Miroku, Sango, Shippou, and Inuyasha. They are the only ones who know this story, and three of them are in the past, and one is in hell with his lover.” She said, looking back down to the ground, hiding her unshed tears. The scent flooded Hiei’s nose and he felt a something unknown tug at the center of him. Her tears bothered him for some reason.
“Just listen?”
“Yes. There’s not much else you can do. The story is over. It ended over a year ago.” She said softly, now pulling up her knees to her chest.
He considered her request. He could listen. Maybe she could keep him entertained while he waited for another mission to come up. Maybe.
“I’ll listen to your story, ningin.” He said, nodding to her. A small smile came to her face, and she nodded back to him. “Thank you. I appreciate this.” She said, looking back to her knees.
He waited, and then she began, but he was in no way, shape, or form, prepared for the words that followed next…
