CHAPTER ONE
“Inuyasha, could we please stop?” Kagome begged. “We’ve been walking since we left that Inn this morning…please?”
Inuyasha looked over his shoulder at his travel companions. He noticed how tired they all looked. Perhaps he had been pushing them too hard as of late…what with the shikon no tama almost complete. Inuyasha stopped, and the others halted behind him. He turned around facing the rest of the group. He looked around the area, and decided that this would be a good place to stop for the night. They were standing in a clearing, and they could see if there was an ambush. He shrugged. “OK we can stay here for the night. I’m gonna go gather some fire wood.”
He smirked when he heard them sigh in relief and slink to the ground. They all began to set up camp and when he returned, they were all playing cards.
“Great! Thanks, Inuyasha! Could you start a fire? I‘ll get the ramen ready, k?!” Kagome stood and rummaged through her enormous yellow backpack, and pulled out a couple of packs of ramen. She walked over and kneeled down beside Inuyasha. She poured the ramen into the pan. Inuyasha watched hungrily as the water boiled.
“Ramens ready!” Kagome called a few minutes later.
The group of unlikely companions huddled around the fire, and ate in relative silence. No one seemed to have noticed the growing tension between Inuyasha and Kagome over the past couple of weeks. Maybe they were preoccupied with finding the remaining jewel shards. Or, perhaps, they were anticipating the day when they would finally vanquish Naraku once and for all. Had they cared to pay attention they would have noticed the long glances and the heated stares. No, the others might not have noticed that things were changing, but Inuyasha and Kagome were certainly aware. They had hardly spoken to each other in three days. Neither knew what to say to the other without making things more complicated. They knew the quest was coming to an end, but they didn’t want to face the facts: What happens when the jewel is complete? These and similar thoughts were plaguing Inuyasha as he stared at Kagome over his bowl of ramen. Kagome noticed his eyes on her and a chill went up her spine. He noticed this and looked away. Kagome got the distinct feeling Inuyasha was avoiding her, after all they had hardly spoken to each other in the past few weeks. Kagome put her bowl down and asked…
“Inuyasha. What’s wrong?”
Inuyasha looked at her and then at their friends, who were watching with interest. Apparently, they figured out something was bothering their companions.
“Keh…not here, Kagome.” He mumbled, digging back into his ramen. He continued to glare at Kagome over his bowl. She looked sad, and he immediately wondered if he had hurt her feelings, but she said noting else.
By the time they finished the meal, the sun had set. Shippou fell right asleep on Kilala. Miroku and Sango were discussing techniques to destroy demons, however, Sango kept her distance for fear of getting groped by Miroku. Inuyasha looked at Kagome. She was writing in her journal, and he decided that this would be a good time to talk to her. When he got up, however, he noticed his senses had diminished. ‘Oh right! How could I forget!? It’s the new moon!’ He thought. “Kagome.”
“Yes, Inuyasha.” She looked up and saw he was in his human form. “Oh! Inuyasha! I didn’t realize it was the new moon already. What’s up?”
“Will you come with me?”
“Sure…but it’s kinda late…”
“Never mind that…I’ll let you sleep in tomorrow…”
“Really” Kagome looked a little skeptical.
“Promise…now come on!” He grabbed her hands and helped her to her feet. They started in the direction of the well, and Kagome felt her heart speed up. She remembered a few years earlier when Inuyasha pushed her into the well and she wasn’t able to return because she didn’t have any jewel shards. She stopped dead in her tracks, and reached for the bottle around her neck. Inuyasha looked back at Kagome. “What’s wrong?” He asked a little impatiently. Then he noticed she was looking at the ground and her fingers were playing with the glowing bottle around her neck. “Oh…” Inuyasha thought. “She must think I’m gonna send her back to her time again.”
He let go of her hand, and rubbed the back of his neck. “Kagome…I never…I only wanted to make sure you were safe…” He mumbled.
“It’s OK Inuyasha I understand. I’m still just a weak human…an inconvenience that you have to put up with…and protect…I’m not even as good an archer as Kikyo was…” She said, looking anywhere but at Inuyasha. She desperately willed herself not to cry. “Hell…I can’t even wield a weapon like you or Sango!” She turned away.
Inuyasha was speechless. He couldn’t believe she thought he felt that way about her…as a burden, and inconvenience…as if! How many times had SHE saved HIS life, and their friends? After all the shit they’ve been through…
“Awww… bullshit Kagome!”
Kagome tuned back around. Her eyes were wide in shock, and Inuyasha almost smirked. “What?” She asked weakly.
“You heard me… bullshit! Don’t you dare speak about yourself that way! How many times have you saved my ass?! Not to mention the others? I can’t believe you’d say something like that, you’re my friend Kagome. I would never think that…”
She looked puzzled for a second. A compliment from Inuyasha? Hmmmm? She looked up at the sky.
“Hey what are you looking at!?” He said with a scowl on his face.
“Oh…I was just checking to see if pigs were flying…”
“Huh?” He asked confused.
“Never mind.” She sighed.
“Did you hear what I said?”
“That was just pure dumb luck, Inuyasha.” She said still not looking at him.
Now Inuyasha was getting a little impatient. “Kagome!” They looked at each other for a second. He sighed. “This isn’t the conversation I imagined us…Look. We have to decide what we are going to do after the jewel is complete.”
“Why are we talking about this now?! You know what you want, right?! You are gonna go with Kikyo to hell, right?...no matter what I or anyone else says! You've made THAT perfectly clear. Don't let me stop you!" She spit out. She turned her back on him.
"Hey what's your problem?!" He grabbed her arm and spun her around.
Her eyes narrowed. "Inuyasha. I'd appreciate if you'd let go of my arms. Thank you very much."
He released her, and avoided her eyes.
"What's wrong, Inuyasha?"
"When we get the rest of the jewel ARE you going leave” His chest tightened at this last question.
She sighed. This was THE question she’s been asking herself since the quest began. “I don’t know, Inuyasha…we’ll have to deal with that when the time comes…What does it matter to you? You don't care, really.” She said rather matter-of-factly. But truth be told Kagome was scared. She was so afraid that Inuyasha would push her away. She didn’t WANT to leave the life she had here…and she especially didn’t want to leave Inuyasha. She began to walk back towards camp. But Inuyasha grabbed her wrist. She looked up at him, but his face was hidden by his bangs.
“I don’t want you go…please…stay?” His eyes met hers.
“What?” She whispered.
“Stay here…when the jewels complete…don’t go back to your time. I mean…use the well like you do now, of course…but…please…don’t leave…” He shook his head, looking in her eyes ...“for good.”
"Why?"
"Because...I need you." He said simply.
Her eyes shot up to lock with his amber gaze. She thought she was going deaf. She couldn't have just heard what she thought she heard, right?
"What exactly are you saying to me Inuyasha?"
He made a sound of frustration in the back of his throat. "I don't KNOW...I wish I did, but..." He groaned.
Inuyasha pulled away, and ran into the forest.
“Sure, run off just when we were getting somewhere…damit! Why does he ALWAYS pull away?” She shook her head. “Just once I’d like to finish this ‘conversation’ we’ve been having for the last THREE years. Inuyasha, you baka.” She ran a hand through her hair, and headed back to camp.
Inuyasharan until he felt his chest was on fire... “Grrrrr…damit…when am I gonna grow a fucking backbone? Why does she affect me the way she does? ...And she doesn’t even realize it!!!” He placed his hand on tetsuaiga, and headed back to camp.
