Chapter One – Unnatural Alliance

Inuyasha never saw it coming as Kouga’s fist slammed across his face. His body flew back into the tree behind him; Kouga only smirked at the poor hanyou as he slowly crawled up on his knees.

“Give it up Mutt-face! Just give Kagome to me and we’ll be done with this.”

“Shut up!” Inuyasha lifted the Tetsusaiga ready to strike.

“Kouga! Hey Kouga you won’t believes this!” Kouga leapt back away from the charging hanyou.

“This better be important Ginta!” Kouga snapped.

“It starting! The tournament it’s going to start in two months!”

“What?! Are you joking! Do the others know?” Kouga was no longer paying attention to Inuyasha.

“Tournament? What tournament Kouga?” Sango asked walking up to the excited wolf demon.

“Only the greatest tournament known to demons!” Hakku smirked.

“Demons?” Kagome lifted Shippo into her arms moving closer.

“It’s a tournament built on demons fighting demons, only the strongest demons compete. If a human has what it takes they can take part in the tournament too. I’m surprised you’ve never heard about it Sango. Demon slayers are always in the tournament, well they use to be.”

“A demon tournament…” Inuyasha’s mind went wild with ideas.

“Do you think you’ll bet Sesshomaru this year Kouga?” Ginta asked, once again Inuyasha looked dumbfound.

“The bastard won the last six tournaments! I’m gonna be the winner this year for sure!”

Inuyasha looked stunned, “Wait Sesshomaru…Sesshomaru fights in the tournaments.”

“He has to…family tradition. His family holds the title of the most wins. Second place, is…” Hakku paused when Kouga growled.

“Don’t say it! I don’t want to hear that name!” Kouga growled deep warning his friend to keep quite.

“Kouga…she hasn’t competed since well…you know.” Hakku whispered.

“Look….just leave her out of this, I don’t want to bring up the past.” He frowned looking at Kagome.

“I’m sorry to say I have to leave you with the mutt for the time being. Only fifteen demons can take place in the tournament. I need to train.”

“Fifteen demons!” Shippo stated, with a bit of nervous.

“Well fifteen competitors I guess you could say, in two months demons and humans from all over will being entering the four main Dojos in each area. West, East, North, and South. They will be given a gem, once the trails are over a list will be posted letting everyone know who is in the tournament. On the night of the full moon, the tournament will being. Each competitor is given a gem of a different color. If you win you take the gem from the loser and move up in rank. Pretty simple.” Ginta smiled.

“Sounds great…Kouga do you think I could enter?” Sango looked hopeful.

“Have to past the test, better hurry; demons live for this…it’s a chance to prove just how powerful you are. It gains you respect in all circles. The winner is given a sword engraved with the title of ‘Kami Warrior’. With all the gems in the handle. Sesshomaru has six.”

“If I don’t make it then I can try again next year right?”

“Next year?” Kouga lifted an eyebrow

“Yeah.”

“Sango the tournament is every four years.” Ginta answered.

“What…no wonder demons live for this.” Miroku seemed dishearten for Sango.

“Some spend all four years training.” Hakku smiled.

“Good luck Kouga.” Kagome gave him a warm smile.

“Thank you Kagome, I’ll be victorious this year! Let’s go boys.”

With that said, Kouga was gone Ginta and Hakku chasing after his cloud of dust. Inuyasha hadn’t spoken, but he’d heard every word. His family held the title of most wins, Sesshomaru was the champion for the last six tournaments…respected by everyone in all circles! He’d be crazy not to enter…why hadn’t he heard about this? Granted he’d been pinned to a tree for fifty years that was no reason to be left out of the loop. Inuyasha looked over his group of close friends. Sango and Kagome spoke about her chances in getting into the tournament. She claimed it would be a good way to slay the most powerful demons, but he knew it had nothing to do with that. Just like him, this was about family…honor. Kouga said demon slayers were always in the tournament.

“Inuyasha, are you ok?” Kagome touched his shoulder lightly.

“I have to get in this tournament Kagome…I have to…to prove to everyone, Sesshomaru, that I’m not just some dumb half-breed.”

“I understand, but you don’t really know the full details. Where these dojos are and well you’re missing a few key parts of information.”

“I know how to find out…”

“How?” She titled her head looking up at him.

“…Sesshomaru.” He growled.

“He’s not just going to tell you…you know how he feels about things like this.”

“I don’t care…I’ll get a chance to face off with him one on one, no interruptions.”

“Inuyasha I’m worried…what if you’re getting in over your head, this could be dangerous, what about Naraku?”

“I need this Kagome, I need to do this. Naraku can wait…just this once. I have to at least try.” He looked at her with pleading eyes.

“I’ll go with you then, later on today. Let’s get Shippo and the others back to the village and together we’ll find Sesshomaru and ask him.”

“Thank you Kagome.” He pulled her into a soft hug, making her cheeks turn red.

“You’re welcome Inuyasha.”

Meanwhile Kikyo had her own things to tend to, something that she’d been waiting for, and something that was long over do. Why she came across the ocean in search of this one, the one many demons stilled feared and trembled before. The one, who held the power to bring even the mighty Sesshomaru to his knees, was beyond her. The demon could not be trusted. Evil, two-faced, seductive, luring, charming, lovely, she was evil in a demonic form. Making her way though the vacant village; she could see the demonic aura from thirty miles off. Thick light pink hazy floated about the ground, as she pulled back the curtain door, stepping in. Her powers wouldn’t work here…no ‘her’ powers far surpassed her own. Though she was a miko, this demon moved too fast to land an arrow. Only she didn’t fear for her life, not with this demon. They shared an understanding.

“Why have you come here?” A voice asked from the pink mist.

“I’ve come to speak with the lady of the domain.” Her voice held confidence.

“And you would be?”

“Lady Kikyo, a priestess from the shore of Japan.”

“I heard tales she was slain fifty years ago, by an Inu hanyou.”

“That is true, I was slain, but I have risen again.”

“I see…” There was silence, before a soft voice answered back.

“You may enter.”

The mist parted showing a hidden paradise in the wake. A waterfall glistened as bamboo grew to new heights. Smooth black stone made a path showing a woman gazing into the glowing pool of water beneath her. The jet black kimono hugged her form to perfection like a second layer of skin. Hair pulled back into a high bun pinned up with oriental hair-chopsticks and ivory hair combs. Lovely pearls hung around her neck dangling to her waist.

“Lady Kikyo…it’s been a long time.” She stood turning to face her, Kikyo was stunned by her timeless beauty, one that would never fade with age.

“It has.”

“Glad to see you well, yet to feed off the souls of the undead is so unbecoming of a lady such as yourself.”

“I agree…yet you can see them?’

“I’m not dumb, nor blind.” She looked rather amused. “Why have you come here?”

“I ask you to join the tournament this year.”

“Has it come already…my time does fly.” She looked down into the glittering pool with a lost expression.

“I must decline your request.” She answered with a hint of sadness.

“Much has changed, I’m not the only one alive…”

“Is that so….I have lost my touch, I’m not who I use to be…China is much different than Japan. I will stay here…”

“My Lady…please reconsider?”

“Why do you press the matter…I have spoken! I will not fight.” She turned her face growing cold, and her tone turning uncaring.

“Afraid…fear was never an emotion you showed before. Why show it now?”

“How dare you…miko or not, I surpass you in power. You’re nothing more than a bug under my foot! You will not speak to me that way!” She turned Kikyo stepped back watching her aura grow dark.

“Fight…not for the title…not for the honor, but for the enjoyment that we…You and I once shared.”

“I have forgotten such a time…be gone.” She turned, her dark kimono rustling along the ground.

“He has changed too; he’s grown dark and uncaring. He is a cold man; with a dark heart and only kills when it suits him. I understand the change in Lord Sesshomaru, but not you. You were the dark goddess of the battle field, and the fiery vixen that burned the desires of many demons and human men. Now you’ve turned hard and ugly…you beauty destroyed by your hatred for a man who only used you for a title.” She was lying, her beauty was still unmatched.

“Kikyo…Sesshomaru betrayed my trust, he used me…my love…to win the title when I was so close. I can’t face him…not now and I don’t think I ever can.”

“Then well will face him together. I too know how it feels to be betrayed, and I have learned one thing. Not everything is as it seems. Confront him; make him face the dark demons of his past, much like you have been doing these past twenty-four years. We were all crushed by his betrayal to you…even when you left. I was already gone, but Kaede told me. Though we all fought, we were a family, a group. He has won the last six tournaments, only because of your absents nothing more.”

“Why do you fight?”

“I have my reasons…there are things I must learn, understand, and grow. I have my own demons to fight.”

“And you, a miko, will fight along side me in the battle of my past. A past you had missed out on…it was never the same after you died.”

“I’m sure, fight with me…my friend.”

“Friend, funny. Our kinds have battled each other for decades everyday, yet you come to me as a friend. Maybe things have changed. I will think this over… I promise nothing.”

“That’s all I ask.” Kikyo bowed to the demon, who nodded back.

“Until another time Kikyo.”

“Indeed.” She turned walking away with a slight smile…she would come.

This would be a tournament that would last throughout the ages.
