Author’s Notes: This story takes place approximately 2 years after the events in Coyote Tricks: The Bone Eaters Well. Coyote Tricks, Coyote Tricks: Outfoxed, and Coyote Tricks: The Bone Eaters Well all precede this story. It is not necessary to read those stories to enjoy this one but it will help with understanding the history and relationship of the characters as well as some background references. It should also be noted that the story is posted on AFF in the regular IY section and not the Yaoi section. There are reasons for this that will become obvious as the story unfolds.
Prologues: Fateful Meetings
Yuki put down her pencil and admired her work. She worked hard to recapture on paper the two demons she had seen at the airport. She had to admit that she had done an almost perfect job. Now what to name them? The sandy haired one was obviously American or European and his ears and tail weren’t Kitsune, more of a coyote or wolf. She decided to name him Carl and the Kitsune she would call Kit, short for Kitsune of course.

The jarring sound penetrated Shippo’s sleep filled brain. After a moment his brain connected the sound with a label, ‘telephone’. He picked up the receiver as the sleeping form next to him stirred but didn’t awaken.
“Hello” he said sleepily into the phone.
“Shippo” said the voice on the other end “did I wake you?”
“Yes but its ok, what is up, Kurama?”
“He has agreed to the meeting you requested.”
“When and where?”
“At your condo, 10:00 o’clock.”
Shippo glanced at the clock on the nightstand. ‘Nice of them to give me plenty of warning’ he thought sarcastically.
“Wait,” he said into the phone “he is coming here?”
“In a manner of speaking,” Kurama said with a hint of amusement in his voice “Botan will be there around 9:30 to set it up.”
“Alright, I’ll be ready. And Kurama thanks.”
“No problem, I hope he gives you the answers you want, old friend. Goodbye.”
“Goodbye.”
Shippo put the phone down and looked at the sleeping figure next to him. Kit was a half human/half coyote spirit or a hanyou as the Japanese called half breed spirits. At a little over 60 years old, Kit was young as the near immortal spirits went. He looked like a human in his late teens that is if a human had sandy colored coyote ears and a tail. Shippo was a full blooded Kitsune (fox spirit) with a tail (5 of them actually in his fox form) also but his ears were more human with just a point at the top. He also had fox feet instead of human legs. Being over 500 years old he looked like a human in his mid 20s.
Kit snuggled closer to Shippo in his sleep. Shippo smiled and enjoyed the coyote’s warmth. Kit had been here over a year now since his mentor died rescuing him from the clutches of the Queen of Darkness. Shippo’s thoughts drifted pleasantly back to last night and the memory of the coyote’s hard sweat covered body beneath him in the throes of passion. Shippo had developed a relationship with the bisexual coyote but over time as it became obvious to Kit that Shippo was not going to allow any commitment, by either marking Kit or making him a life mate, the relationship had grown colder. Kit would go back to his tomcat ways for awhile but he always kept coming back to Shippo’s bed.
They both kept pretending that there was nothing wrong but Shippo knew he had to do something soon. Despite having free will, canine spirits are still strongly influenced by the instincts of their lesser animal cousins. The lack of a commitment in the relationship was tearing Kit and Shippo apart. He either needed to break it off with Kit entirely or mark him as his; if not as a life mate then at least as a love mate. This was the reason for this morning’s meeting. There was something that had to be determined before Shippo could do anything.
Shippo quietly slipped out of bed spurring a whine of protest from the sleeping coyote, who wrapped himself around Shippo’s discarded pillow as a poor substitute for its warm owner. Shippo slipped into his kimono and quietly went down to the kitchen. He found the counter lights on and the smell of freshly brewed coffee helped to perk him up. His sensitive ears heard the sounds of Toshiro’s morning workout coming up the stairs from the basement gym.
‘Thank the Gods someone in the house is an early riser.’ Shippo thought, although he had no idea where his second oldest child got it from. He poured himself a strong cup of coffee and went down to the gym.
Toshiro was in the middle of a Kendo exercise with a practice sword. Shippo knew Toshiro was aware of his presence but by long standing agreement as long as Shippo remained silent Toshiro would know that his father did not demand his attention and could continue his exercise. As he sipped his coffee, Shippo stood and watched the graceful fox hanyou move through the motions of the exercise. Aside from some of the demon lords who wielded swords of power, few demons bothered to learn the art of human weapons preferring instead to rely on their own natural weapons and abilities.
A few of the more human looking demons like Kurama’s friend, Hiei, and particularly hanyous like Toshiro took to human swords and similar weapons with a natural affinity. Shippo watched as Toshiro circled and moved around the mats. The sword seemed just as much a part of him as his foxtail and ears.
Toshiro finished his exercise, acknowledged his father with a bow and put away his practice sword.
“Toshiro” Shippo said quietly “I need a favor of you.”
“Yes Father” Toshiro said, wiping the sweat from his face.
“I need you to get Kit out of the house by 9:30 this morning.”
“I don’t think that will be a problem” Toshiro said “I was planning to go to that big anime convention today. Kit mentioned he would like to go.”
Toshiro glanced at the clock. “As a matter of fact I just I have time to bathe before we have to go.”
“Alright” Shippo said smiling “I’ll wake Kit and let him know, he’ll probably want to wash up too. Oh and Toshiro…”
“Yes Father?”
“It is important that he not know that I wanted him out of the house.”
“Yes Father.”
-
An hour later, the Toshiro and Kit left for the convention. Shippo watched them go, taking some satisfaction in the sight. Toshiro had been upset at first when he found out that Kit was Shippo’s lover but eventually accepted the fact and the two had become good friends.
Botan arrived at 9:40.
"Sorry I'm late, Master Shippo" she said as Shippo let her in. She was carrying a small black case that appeared to be some sort of laptop computer.
“What is this?” Shippo asked as Botan set the unit up on the living area table.
“Oh it is video teleconferencing unit with a direct link to Spirit World” Botan said cheerfully. “You know Lord Koenma and his gadgets.”
A beep came from the box.
“Oh its time” Botan said turning the unit on. On the screen, Shippo saw an elaborate office desk piled high with papers. Sitting behind it was a young looking man with ‘Jr.’ tattooed on his forehead. Shippo smiled inside, it seems Koenma had finally decided to grow up a little, after centuries of being a toddler he was finally appearing as a teenager. He still had his trademark pacifier in his mouth. Shippo never could figure out how he talked so clearly while sucking on it.
“Ah Shippo” Koenma said “it is good to see you again.”
“Thank you, Lord Koenma, it is good to see you again also.”
“Well straight to business. After the excellent job you did with the Queen of Shadows incident, I gave your missive very special consideration.”
“Thank you for that, Koenma sir.”
“Don’t thank me yet” Koenma said “I’m afraid the answer is no.”
-
Toshiro and Kit were wandering the dealer’s tables at the anime convention, when Toshiro pointed to a fan doujinshi on one of the tables.
“Hey Kit” he said “this guy looks just like you.”
“Yea he does” Kit said picking it up. “‘Coyote Dreams’ by Yuki. Wonder who that is?”
He flipped it open to the first page.
“Hey you’re in here too, look”
Toshiro looked. “You are right it does look like me. Hey it is you it says Kit!”
“No” Kit said reading the first page “your character is named Kit, I’m named Carl.”
Kit proceeded to skim through the book.
“A lot of artists are spirit sensitive.” Toshiro said looking over some of the other titles. “She probably saw us somewhere and used us as inspiration.”
“Well I guess we were pretty inspiring” Kit said with a huge grin on his face as he held the doujinshi open for Toshiro to see.
Toshiro face faulted. “Akk, its yaoi!”
“I’ve got to buy this” Kit said fishing out some yen.
“No please don’t” Toshiro moaned “or at least let me burn it when you are done.”
“No way” Kit said, handing the money over to the vendor.
The vendor put the doujinshi in a brown bag and handed it back to Kit. Kit moved on to the next table with Toshiro following closely on his heels.
“Please Kit just promise me you won’t let Father or Koto see it”
“Oh, I don’t know, there might be some good stuff in here to share with your dad. I’m always looking for new positions.”
Toshiro looked green.
The vendor at the table looked up as someone else approached.
“Hey Yuki” he said “just sold a copy of your new book.”
“Yea” Yuki asked “to who?”
The vendor pointed at the retreating Kit and Toshiro. Yuki’s jaw dropped.

At the Sunset Shrine, a teenage girl in a school uniform opened the door to the shrine building built around the Bone Eaters Well. She ran down the steps, leapt into the well and disappeared. A moment later, a shadow fell over the well and a male voice laughed.

Foxfur: Well, find somebody to draw it for you.
Stardreamer: Well, if anybody is willing to draw it or even just write the story, I’m more than willing to let them.
Foxfur: Somebody please, for me!
Stardreamer: I’ll loan Kit and Toshiro out, as long as I get them back for the next chapter: A Surprise from the Past.
