Never Again
They were gone. All of them, lost to her. Miroku had fallen first, his wind tunnel growing more and more powerful until one day, he told them to not follow him as he went for a walk. She had watched with sorrow as a great wind came upon the land, taking in a huge piece of the land with it as it barreled towards Miroku’s direction. Later that day, they erected a small grave stone, bearing his name in the center of the crater that marked his death. Sango had wept then, carrying on about how she should have said yes to him, how she should have just told him that she loved him.
Kagome felt tears come as she thought of Sango. Sango, her dear surrogate sister, had perished next, during a battle against Naraku. She had died at the hands of her own brother, whom then was destroyed by the vile hanyou afterwards. Kirara could barely respond after that, her only choice to live on under Kagome’s care. The neko youkai sat beside her now, a low purr in her throat as she attempted to comfort the silently grieving miko.
Kaede had trained her completely, Kagome’s power under her full control. She no longer dressed as a school girl, her uniforms long since destroyed after the well stopped working. She dressed in miko’s garb now, the village giving her green hakama in memory of her old uniform and to differentiate her from Kikyo. Kagome sighed as the wind blew her long hair into the air. It was longer now, hanging to her thigh. She usually kept it back with a ribbon, but today, she felt like it should be free.
“You are here,” a familiar, male voice stated.
Kagome turned, her saddened chocolate colored eyes alighting upon her new companion. She nodded to him and gave a slight smile. “You asked.”
Silver hair mingled with black as the wind tossed them together. Gold eyes locked with brown as the pair stared at one another. He looked away, unable to stand her sorrow for long. “How do you fare?” he asked.
“Why do you ask me that?” she countered.
He lifted his head, the violet waning moon flashing on his brow. “Duty.”
“Duty? You held no ties to him, and he never claimed, nor mated with me. His mate went with him to death. You know this, you watched it happen with me.”
His brows furrowed as he nodded. “Hai, I remember.”
“Then why do you care if I fare well or not?”
He said nothing, only looked at her with a strange wanting. “You… how is she?” he asked brokenly.
Kagome smiled softly. “She’s happy to be with me and Shippo. They are with Kaede-sama now, learning about herbs.”
“You do not look different,” he commented.
She quirked a brow at him. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“I meant no ill. I just meant to say that, you are the same.”
She smiled. “Is that a good thing?” she asked.
“It could be.”
“Well, being the mate to a youkai has lengthened my life. But you knew that already,” she said.
“Kagome…” he began.
“I have been told that my child will not be hanyou,” she said, as she touched her slightly swollen belly absently.
His eyes grew wide. “How?”
“Something to do with my being a miko, I’m sure.”
His lips twitched into a small smile. “I’m sure.”
“I do wish that my mate would stop acting like a pompous ass and tell me why he came,” she mused lightly.
He snorted. “If only it were so easy.”
Kagome’s head snapped straight up. “Easy? Do think it was easy to watch them all die? Did you think it was easy to wake up that morning after we… after that night to find you gone? Did you think it was easy to discover that I was going to have a child without you?” she asked, tears threatening to fall as she looked away from his penetrating stare. “Was it easy to find out that I loved you, even though you abandoned me?”
He stepped forward, his arms open. “Kagome… I-“
She shook her head and stepped back. “Please, don’t tell me that it didn’t matter, and that it wasn’t anything but meaningless sex, and that you just came to see her, because it will break me,” she whimpered.
He was suddenly behind her, his white and red clothed arms around her as he held her close. He breathed in deep the heavenly scent that was her and tightened his hold on her. Faintly, he could hear the sound of his pup’s heartbeat within her womb and he smiled against her raven locks. “Kagome, it mattered. As much as I tried to tell myself that was just sex, I knew it wasn’t. Something happened to us that night. I ran because I became afraid I was just becoming my father. I will try not to break you, Kagome, because… I love you.”
Kagome choked back a sob as she clutched his arms tightly. She had thought she had lost them all, save Shippo and Kirara. She hadn’t lost him. He loved her. “Oh, Sesshomaru. Don’t ever leave me again!” she cried as she turned in his arms and buried her face into his kimono.
The daiyoukai’s eyes softened as he embraced his mate gently. “Never again, koiishi. Never again.”
