Cannot Touch

Cannot Touch
By Leloi

“Where the hell are they?” Inuyasha cursed, turning around to stare at the clearing he and Kagome were standing in.

“Maybe they got lost,” Kagome said quietly.

He stared at her with an “ I can’t believe you just said that” look in his eyes.

She shrugged and turned around to look at the trees behind her. “They could have. It’s a big area.”

Inuyasha sighed and rolled his eyes. He regarded her thoughtfully. “Well, it’s going to be dark soon. We can’t go off and look for them. We better stay here tonight.”

She blushed and smiled shyly. “Miroku has my stuff…”

He shook his head. “You’ll have to live without it.” He sat heavily against the base of a tree.

She glanced at the setting sun and shivered. “It’s getting cold. I wish I could have my sleeping bag at least.”

He watched her... she stood alone and silent in the clearing, her face towards the waning light. “Come here,” he whispered.

She stared at him in confusion.

“We can’t light a fire, it’s too dangerous.” He rested his hands on his knees. “Come here,” he repeated.

She knelt beside him and he gestured for her to sit in front of him. She obeyed and he wrapped his arms around her.

“This will keep you warm,” he said quietly, trying to ignore the sensations that ran through his body.

They sat silently together, watching the sunset. She shivered as a night breeze rustled the treetop above them. He held her tighter, feeling like he was burning up. She finally relaxed and snuggled against his warmth. “What do you think happened to them?” she yawned, watching the shadows deepen.

“I don’t know,” he responded. “Try and get some sleep.”

She nodded and curled up against him.

He watched her as the light faded. She looked peaceful in his arms… too peaceful. He shivered. If only she knew what kind of monster held her close, keeping her warm. A monster that had killed… and would probably kill again. She laid all of her trust and innocence in his arms without a second thought to her own danger. Her face was beautifully slack with sleep. So much trust… He squeezed her to him, reveling in the warmth of her body against his. He kissed her delicately on the top of her head, inhaling the scent of her hair.

She moaned and wrapped her arms around his waist. “I love you…” she mumbled before falling back asleep.

He stared at her in shock. His heart raced and he felt dizzy. “Kagome?” he whispered.

She moaned softly.

He reaffirmed that his arms were around her protectively before settling back to wait out the night.

She came out of the darkness with her bow and arrow drawn. He stared at her, unsure what to do or how to explain the sleeping girl in his arms. “To hell…” she whispered.

“No!” he cried, but it was too late. The arrow was released. He watched in horror as it whizzed towards him and his companion. He looked down and realized that she was in the direct path to his heart. He barely registered the heat that burned in his chest.

Kagome gave a soft sigh as her life escaped.

“No…” he whispered, cradling her body as best he could with the arrow piercing both of them. Her blood scent was strong. It mingled with his blood. He wrenched his eyes up to stare at Kikyou. “Why?” he demanded. “Why kill her to get to me?”

“She was in the way,” Kikyou replied quietly.

“Damn you!”

“Too late, my dear Inuyasha,” the former miko knelt beside him. “You should have chosen sooner. And now it’s too late for you and her.”

He stared at the one against him. “Please release her… and give her a proper burial. That’s all I ask.”

Kikyou stood and glared at him. “I can not do as you ask. Farewell.”

He watched her leave completely before looking back down at the girl in his arms. “This is all my fault,” he moaned, holding her close and sobbing on her shoulder.

^.~

“Inuyasha… why are you crying?” her voice broke him out of his misery.

He opened his eyes to see her staring up at him from the crook of his arm. The arrow was gone. “I… I… I thought…” he stopped and looked puzzled.

“Bad dream?” she asked, snuggling against his body and sending more shivers of delight down his spine.

“Yeah,” he responded. “It was a bad dream. It’s over now.” He hugged her and kissed the top of her head without her knowing.

^.~

A girl dressed as a miko stood in the woods, staring at the two under a tree. “Oh no, my dear Inuyasha… It’s only beginning.”

^.~

He woke late in the night. Kagome’s scent filled his senses. It was almost her fertile time. His body ached with a longing he wasn’t sure how to appease. She was curled up against his chest with one arm down between his legs. Her hand gave a spasm and idly touched his manhood. He twitched as raw desire ran from between his legs to his extremities. He hugged her to him, trying to ignore the sensations that ran through his body. Her scent washed over him. It made him dizzy. He clumsily leaned forward and kissed her lips.

She gasped and opened her eyes. “Inuyasha?”

“I want you,” he blurted without much thought. The hand on his manhood twitched. He pushed his hips up, against it, wanting more contact.

“What do you want?” she asked, confused from sleep. Her hand moved away from between his legs.

“You,” he whispered. He kissed her again, pushing his lips hard against hers and licking them. She opened her mouth slightly and he tasted her mouth. He wanted so much to become a part of her. His manhood ached with need. His skin burned, wanting to feel her against him. He reached down and fumbled with the ties for his pants. They seemed to be hopelessly knotted. He yanked at them in frustration before finally getting them undone. She blushed in the darkness as he opened his kimono. He knelt before her, naked in the night and wrapped her back with his discarded kimono before pushing her to the ground. He carefully placed most of his weight on his elbows as he lay atop her. “Touch me,” he begged, feeling his long hair cascade down around them, caressing his bare back and arms.

“Inuyasha… you…” she breathed beneath him, looking up into his eyes with confusion.

He delicately brushed a stray tendril of hair away from her face with his thumb. He stared at her, willing his body to relax. His lips touched hers again. “Please…” he whispered.

“You want to… make love to me?” she asked carefully.

He pondered the foreign English words she used for a moment. “If you mean share pleasures with you… then yes. I do… if you want to.”

“I’ve never shared pleasures with anyone before,” she stated nervously.

He blinked down at her. “Neither have I,” he whispered, kissing her deeply. He felt her hands flutter up and wrap around his back. He took it as a good sign and rolled off of her, touching her body through her clothes.

“You’ve never done this?” she asked again, staring into his eyes.

He shook his head. “Your clothes…?” he whispered as his fingers brushed them helplessly. He was only familiar with things that tied or wrapped, not buttoned, hooked or zipped. He watched with interest as she undressed herself down to her panties. His hands took over where hers left off. “Are you sure?” he asked, staring into her eyes, begging confirmation.

She smiled and laid down on his haori. She reached out her arms to him and he crawled into them, taking delight in her naked skin against his. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him against her. “Go ahead,” she whispered in his ear.

It sent fire down his spine. He reached down between them and guided himself into her. “Kagome…” he whispered as he slowly pushed in.

She gasped and cried out.

He pulled back, afraid he had wounded her.

“Don’t” she hissed, resting her hand on his arm. “Move slowly.”

He nodded and slowly eased back in. “Did I… what?”

“First time.”

“Want to stop?”

She shook her head. “No. I want this… with you.”

He smiled and slowly began to push into her. “Kagome,” he moaned, kissing her neck. Her arms and legs wrapped around him and her body rose to meet his thrusts.

^.~

They lay in darkness. Her breathing had slowed back into sleep and he watched her, his body satiated. Their union had been a little too brief. He delicately caressed her cheek and curled up beside her, holding her body close to his own.

^.~

He opened his eyes and saw someone staring down at them. The person knelt and Inuyasha gasped, trying to back away, taking Kagome with him.

Kikyou caught hold of Kagome and pulled her into an embrace. Silently she slit her reincarnation’s throat. “For what you’ve done…” she whispered as she let Kagome’s body fall.

Inuyasha moved to catch her, supporting her head and body as if she were a child.

“You never should have involved her. Your body and soul belong to me.”

“No… NO!” he cried, holding her close. It felt almost like his own blood was escaping from her wound, making him feel weak and empty. “No…” he moaned.

^.~

He was wrapped around her protectively. She mumbled something in her sleep and he focused on her breathing. Another nightmare had passed. He sat up and covered her with his discarded clothes. Dawn was coming; he could feel it. He leaned back against the tree, feeling the rough bark on his sensitive skin.

She slept peacefully, almost like a child. How could he expose her to atrocities? Did she deserve to die simply because she cared about him? He shook his head. “I can’t do this,” he whispered to her sleeping form. “I can’t put you at risk. Everyone who cares for me ends up dead. I can’t do that to you. I’m sorry.” He crawled to her on lethargic hands and knees and kissed her cheek. “I’m sorry…”

The sun rose over the horizon and he took back his kimono. “Wakeup!” he called out gruffly.

She blinked her eyes open as he tossed her clothes at her. She looked confused for a moment. “Last night… did we…?” she whispered, looking down at her naked body.

“There’s nothing to get excited about,” he answered shortly, adjusting his clothes.

“We… you and I…”

He glared at her. “You were convenient.”

Tears filled her eyes as she slowly began to dress.

The others arrived a short while later. Miroku and Sango seemed to be arguing about the previous night.

“Oh no… It was YOU who started it,” Sango growled.

“It was NOT!” Miroku answered. “You had that… that…” he paused and looked around at the present company.

“You BOTH were making a LOT of noise last night,” Shippou snapped.

Inuyasha gave Kagome a fierce glare, watching her cringe in terror.

She made some comment about the hot springs. Sango followed her.

Miroku gave Inuyasha a wink.

^.~

Inuyasha sat in the treetop, staring down at the camp. Another day had passed and they got no closer to finding what they came out here to find. The monk and the demon slayer slept near each other. Shippou was curled up near Kagome’s head.

The dog demon stared at Kagome. She looked so sad and alone… why did it have to be this way?

^.~

He held her body in his arms, her blood dripping down his body. He buried his face in her chest and sobbed. She was gone, lost to him forever.

“You’re the reason she’s dead,” Kikyou whispered, standing before him. “If you didn’t have feelings for her she wouldn’t be a target. You are such a selfish bastard… you have no mind to other’s feelings. It’s only you, you, you.”

“No… no…” he whispered, staring into Kagome’s lifeless eyes.

“Your feelings will betray you. She’ll be killed. You have to let her go completely.”

^.~

He woke, breathing heavily. His feelings… he had feelings, didn’t he? He felt such peace when she was near. His day was brightened with just one of her smiles. She could reduce him to pain with a single tear. Is this what it was to care for someone?

The way she had cried out beneath him as he moved to fill her… he had taken such pleasure in the way his body fit into hers… Her arms embraced him and he didn’t feel so alone. He felt acceptance.

He stared at her sleeping form, shaking his head vigorously and looking away. “I have to let you go… for your own good.”

^.~

The day was bright and beautiful. They strolled along at a leisurely pace, much to Inuyasha’s annoyance. Everyone was behind him, taking delight in the journey. He felt like shit. All at once Kagome was at his side, making his stomach flip flop.

“Hey,” she said, cheerfully.

He glared at her.

“Can we talk about the other night?” she asked carefully.

“No.”

“Why not?”

He turned and snarled at her. “Because there’s nothing to talk about. It was a mistake, so leave me alone about it.” He resumed his stroll, except it was a bit more of a stomp.

Kagome stopped walking and Sango immediately went to comfort her.

Miroku followed the dog demon. “That was uncalled for!” he called out.

Inuyasha turned around and made a face. “It’s for her own good!”

“You’re hurting her, don’t you care?” the monk asked drawing closer.

Inuyasha looked away but didn’t move. “I don’t care. She’ll live.”

“I’m not so sure about that…”

The dog demon spun around and stepped into Miroku’s space. “This doesn’t concern you, houshi.”

“On the contrary, hanyou, it does. She’s a good friend and a sweet girl. I can’t stand to see her suffer because of your stupidity.”

“Then tell her to leave me alone!” Inuyasha barked and turned to leave. He was livid. Why did they have to be in his face because of Kagome? They acted like her personal saviors.

Miroku stared at him. “You don’t really want that,” he remarked calmly.

“Yes, I do.”

^.~

A week passed with silence between the dog demon and the girl from the future. There was a noticeable change in Kagome as days passed. Inuyasha ignored her and kept to himself. She occasionally caught him looking at her, but mostly he stayed away from the camp.

Another week passed and Kagome was a wreck.

One day she was going through her bag when she broke down and started to cry. Sango was immediately at her side. “What’s wrong?”

Kagome clung to her like a child. “Inuyasha is being a complete asshole, my period hasn’t started yet and I can’t find my pencil sharpener,” she sobbed.

Sango face faulted. “What?”

“It’s missing. I know I put it in here somewhere.”

“No, the part about your period…”

“It’s late.”

Sango lightly patted Kagome’s back and tried to smile. “There’s nothing to worry about, unless you’ve done something to…”

Kagome turned bright red and looked away.

Sango stared at her in shock. “With… Inuyasha?”

Kagome nodded mutely.

Sango gave a soft sigh and hugged her friend. “When was the last time you saw your pencil sharpener?”

^.~

Inuyasha sat, staring out at the landscape, lost in thought. He barely noticed the sound of angry feet, but he felt the sharp blow to the head. He turned and glared at the monk with his staff. “Ow! What was THAT for?”

Miroku’s face was red with rage and he held his staff aloft, ready to strike again. “You no good, self centered, demonic bastard! How could you?”

“What?” Inuyasha growled, rubbing his head.

“I talked to Sango and she told me about Kagome.”

Inuyasha paled and looked away. “So…” he answered weakly.

“So?” Miroku chuckled at the absurdity of the answer he was given. “You are a jackass for taking what you want and then leaving her alone with the consequences.”

Inuyasha frowned, perplexed. “What are you talking about?”

“Tell me, Mr. Dog Demon, can you smell when a female is fertile with that doggie nose of yours?”

Inuyasha blinked a few times, his face pale with shock before he turned bright red and looked away.

“I thought so. Did you plan to shame her so completely?”

Inuyasha shook his head and sniffled. “No… I just… Gods…” He covered his face with his hands. He wiped away some wetness before the monk could see. “What do I do now?” he managed, weakly.

“Well I suggest you go talk to her.”

“I can’t,” he whispered, staring at the ground.

“I really think you should.”

The hanyou turned and stared at the monk with something that may have been pain or rage. “I can’t talk to her ever again. It’s for her own good.”

Miroku crossed his arms and glared. “How can it be for her own good? She might be carrying your child. Don’t you care?”

Inuyasha’s anger melted away into pleading. If he allowed himself to care… she would die. The thought echoed in his mind as he pictured it a thousand times over. Each one was savage and bloody. He shook his head. “I can’t allow myself… that luxury.”

“The luxury of caring?” The monk’s tone was harsh.

“You don’t understand.”

“Maybe if you explain it, I would.”

Inuyasha frowned and stood indignantly. “I don’t owe anyone an explanation.”

“Not even the mother of your child?”

Inuyasha turned red and stomped away.

^.~

It was dark again. He was left alone with his thoughts when it was dark. Everyone else slept, but his thoughts often kept him awake. “I can’t abandon them, can I? She needs me…”

He stared down at her from his vantage point. She was in so much pain. Her smile had faded and her happy spirit was heavy with despair. It was hard for him to watch. Each tear she shed, he shed a million inside. He knew why she was in pain. It was his own fault. He wanted to see her smile… but he was afraid.

^.~

“Forget her,” Kikyou said, staring up at him. “It’s for her own good.”

Inuyasha shook his head. “I can’t.”

Kikyou nodded and readied her bow.

Inuyasha jumped down and stood between Kikyou and Kagome. He unsheathed his sword and slashed out. “Don’t touch her!”

^.~

He landed on the ground. His body was sore from the fall, but he rubbed his pains away. It did nothing for the pain in his soul. He slowly became aware that he was not sitting alone. Kagome was beside him, staring at him in concern. He lunged for her, wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his face in her lap.

“Another nightmare?” she asked quietly, lightly touching his head.

“Yes,” he answered, shaking with emotion. He sniffled silently. There was a scent of blood to her. Her blood time had come. She carried no child within her. Something inside was disappointed.

“What happened in your dream?” she asked quietly.

“I was told not to get close to you or you would… die,” he answered. “It kept happening over and over. I couldn’t let it… I couldn’t let you die. I had to stop it. I had to push you away.”

She wrapped her arms around him holding him close. “How could you keep something like that to yourself?” she demanded. “How could you push me away?” She sobbed against his back.

They held each other.

^.~

A born again miko watched the scene. “Looks like your little dream child failed in his task.”

A man in a baboon pelt silently watched, livid. A crumpled demon lay at his feet, slain for its failure. “It won’t happen again…” the man finally spoke and walked away.
