“Get back here mother fucker!”
He ran as fast as he could from his pursuers. His lungs burned and his legs felt like jelly, but he continued to run at full speed. He knew that what pain he felt now would be nothing compared to what would happen to him if he was caught,
“You better stop right this fucking instant!”
“We’re gonna kick your ass so hard fucker!”
“Damn queer! Quit runnin’!”
They’re shouts were getting closer. Panic filled him and he tried to push himself harder but he couldn’t seem to get any further from them. He turned a corner and run into someone which knocked him down flat. He groaned and looked around dazed.
“Hey are you okay?” A young man with long black hair and hazel eyes held out a hand to him. Shouts then came from around the corner and the man on the ground peeled himself off the ground. He took one step and fell against the wall to steady himself. His heart was threatening to burst through his chest and he could seem to get enough air. The other man put his hands on his shoulders to steady him.
“You don’t look so good. You should take a seat.” He tried to get him to sit but the breathless young man just shook his head and took another step.
“He went around the corner! Don’t loose him!” The dark haired young man lifted his head at the shouts and the sounds off running feet and made the connection in his head. He put the other man’s arm around his neck and pulled him along.
“Come on dude, you can hide in here.” He pulled him into a laundry mat and took him around the corner next to the dryers. He let the panting man slide to the ground while he went back and watched as five other men ran past the front of the mat. He waited to see if anymore were coming and when they didn’t he went back to the man on the floor. He had his legs spread out in front of him and his head back against the machine with his eyes closed. He was taking quick shallow breaths and his hands were shaking slightly. He sat down on his haunches and spoke to him.
“You okay man? Those guys ran past here. I think we gave ‘em the slip.” The young man opened his eyes and looked over the other man. He nodded and took deeper breaths. He drew up his knees and put his forearms on them. He rubbed his hand over his face and blew out air. The dark haired young man looked at his quizzically.
“So why were they chasing you? They looked pretty pissed.” The young man began waving his hands around. He pointed outside and then back at himself and waved his hands around again.
“Whoa, whoa chill out man, why don’t you just tell me what happened?” the young man quirked an eyebrow at him and shook his head. He covered his mouth with his hand and shook his head again.
“You cant tell me? Why not?” The man sighed and tried something different. The opened his mouth and tapped his throat. He made motions with his hands over things coming out of his mouth and shook his head again.
“You’re mute. You can’t talk.” The other man nodded. “Oh, sorry.” The man made a gesture that told him not to worry about it. He put his forehead to his knees and blew out air again.
“Hey.” A red spot behind the mute man caught his attention. He looked at it and realized it came from the man’s head.
“You’re bleeding dude.” The man reached up and touched his neck. His hand came back covered in redness. He pulled his ball cap off and looked inside it. It too was stained red. He ran his hand along the back of his head and winced as he found the source of the bleeding. He tried to stand up but a wave of dizziness slammed him back down to the ground.
“Whoa, lets get you to a hospital.” The dark haired man draped the other man’s arm around his neck and lifted him up. The man shook his head frantically and pulled away.
“What do mean ‘no’? You’re bleeding from your head, we gotta get you to a hospital.” He shook his head more and motioned to the window and then himself. He pleaded with his eyes and hoped the man understood him.
“You’re afraid those guys will find you.” The man nodded. “Alright. No hospital. But we gotta get you outta here.” He half walked half dragged the man out to his car and drove to his apartment.
He got out in front of the building and went over to the call box.
“Please still be home Kag,” he said to himself. He pressed the button and waited.
“Yes?” a pleasant female voice came over the intercom.
“Its me babe. I need you to come down and help me with something.”
“What is it?”
“Just come on down will ya? You’ll see when you get here.”
“I’ve got to get ready for work hon, what is it you need?”
“Just get down here will you? I don’t want to argue with you.” He let go of the button and went back to his car. He opened the passenger side door and pulled the now unconscious man from the car. He kicked the door shut and waited for the girl to get to the front door. Moments later she appeared a gasped. She opened her mouth to speak but the he cut her off. “Ask me when we get upstairs. Take his arm.” The two drug the man up the stairs and finally into the apartment on the third floor.
