While you were Sleeping
While you were Sleeping
Opening Credits: Ok, I’ve gotta think “Modest
Proposal” out a little better before I continue it. So until then, here’s a
lemony adoption of one of my favorite romantic comedies EVER. Ever. And it works
so freakishly well, I couldn’t help myself. This is very different, though, to a
lot for more lemons and twisted humor.

Chapter One: Enter a Dream
“Thank you for stopping by. Have a nice day.”
Oh, how she hated those words. For her, it was an instilled ritual; every sound,
action, and fake smile like applications to a program that ran day after day,
hour after our, customer after customer. There were about 1000 other places
she’s rather be on that crisp November morning. Specifically Hawaii, basking in
the sunlight and tropical grandeur. Wishful thinking on her part.
The most exotic thing about her current location was the withered up vine that
grew up the side of her booth. It wasn’t much to look at. In fact, it was really
ugly….
Kagome Higurashi was like many other 20 year olds who were trying to find a sort
of niche in a society run so much on business, economy, and technology. She
dropped out of the local college after two years with the thought that it was
suppressing her creative mind. Perhaps all those painting classes got to her
head. But she was determined to find a place in this new world where artists
still reigned supreme. She would find it if it killed her. And what better a
place to start than the local supermarket!
That’s where she worked. One of the smaller outlets of a chain supermarket line.
Sakura Market, it was called, and they decided to be cool and use English
letters to spell it out. She wondered how badly the catchphrase was translated.
If she wasn’t too lazy to recall her high school days, she might have actually
tried to read it herself. Yeah, whatever.
“Thank you for stopping by. Have a great day!” Check that ouhe the thought. I
said great. She was stuck on the outside booth, where rushing workers liked to
stop by and pick up quick meals. It was always busy for such a small place,
actually, since the location of this store was on the corner of two busy
streets, across from a subway station and around the corner from a prestigious
university. Especially this time of year where hot chocolate and coffee were
treasured commodities. At least she wouldn’t be bored. She checked her watch and
felt an all too familiar flutter in her stomach. He would be showing up soon.
He was Sesshoumaru Taisho, one of the most handsome and well to do young
entrepreneurs of the area. From the first time she laid eyes on him, she felt an
instant attraction. Then again, who wouldn’t? He was gorgeous in every way
possible. His eyes were the most beautiful shade of amber, his hair silky, long
and shiny, his skin was a soft and well kept. She liked to fantasize about what
it would be like to be his. All the lavish parties and expensive dinners, being
able to travel anywhere, not to mention hearing him say her name…
“Kagome..” So deep and strong. And sexy. Very very sexy. “Hey, Kagome…” She
smiled to herself. “Hmm, Sesshoumaru…”
“The usual please.” She blinked. Suddenly her romantic little thought bubble
burst. He was there, alright, but so was the store, and the city, and a line of
impatient customers.
“Oh god,” she mumbled under her breath as she began to hastily put together his
breakfast. How embarrassing. Did I really say his name like that?
…Did he really say mine?
As the espresso machine rattled, curiosity got a hold or.
“So, you figured out my name, eh?” she said, smiling wittily. He chuckled, and
his very charm was enough to melt her, even in this harsh cold.
“Yeah, you know. Finally noticed that big gold thing on your hat,” he said after
removing his wallet and giving her the exact amount.
She laughed back, even though inside she was kicking herself. Duh Kagome, she
lamented. Name tag… “Don’t you think it’s a little early to be day dreaming?
Does somebody have a crush?” he teased lightly. She felt her face go crimson as
she packed his order into a bag. “Aha, I was right. That’s one lucky guy. Well,
have a great day.” She choked. She couldn’t even get her program to work right.
How dumb. Her thoughts were interrupted by a harsh voice.
“A bagel with cheese, bacon, and eggs. .. Wait make that sausage. Actually, do
you have biscuits today?” Kagome sighed. It was going to be a long morning.
After the initial rush died down, fifteen minutes had gone by. She still felt
sheepish and silly, but elated at the same time. He said whoever she liked was a
lucky guy. That was definitely a compliment. She couldn’t help but crack a smile
as she leaned over to rest her elbows on the edge of the counter. Suddenly,
something dropped down to her feet and she looked. Her eyes opened suddenly and
a giant smile plastered onto her face. She picked up the phone and paged her
friend inside, who she could see through the window at the register, looking
very bored. People never really went inside this early, and they were
overstaffed. The girl picked up.
“Hello?”
“Sango! It’s Kagome!” She was practically shrieking into the receiver. Her
friend turned to look outside.
“You dolt, why didn’t you just come in?”
“Cover me!”
“What?”
“I need you to cover me. I’ll explain later!”
“Um… alright…” With that, Kagome slammed down the phone and threw off her apron
and hat. She grabbed the item that had caused this sudden fit and jumped over
the counter and down the street. In her hand was a small, elegant black wallet.
One look was all it took. She knew whose it was.
She found the train station to be freakishly deserted. Though she knew it was
well past morning rush hour (Sesshoumaru was a 10-7 guy apparently), she still
felt strange about it. An express train flew by, breaking the silence for a few
moments. She looked around. There was nobody, not even anyone in the help desk,
though she noticed a lot of construction going on. He did come in here, didn’t
he? She swore this was the train he took…
She heard a scuffle over to her right and gazed into the darkness beyond. Lights
in that area were shut off. Then a few voices came. She listened closely, a
slight fear running up her spine. This was very fishy.
“Damn, what a waste..” one voice said.
“The hell, man. He’s empty.”
“O well, let’s get out of here…” Kagome slid into a crevice that was on the
opposite side of the staircase. She heard hurried steps and waited ‘til they
disappeared. Then she came out of hiding, looking around to make sure it was
safe, and ran over to where they were. Though she was expecting to find someone
there, she wasn’t expecting it to be him. Her jaw dropped open and she stood in
shock for a few moments before her senses kicked in and she called the police.
It was only a few minutes before help arrived, but to her, it seemed like an
eternity. They took her with them to the hospital for questioning. It was very
awkward, and she was getting annoyed with the interrogations. It had been almost
an hour. She just wanted to go up and make sure he was alright.
“Exactly what were you doing down there in a closed station?”
“I wanted to give him back his wallet. He left it at the booth…”
“And so you went into the station… but it had been 15 minutes. Did you think
he’d still be there?”
“I was just checking. Maybe he thought he dropped it there and was looking.”
“And the guy you find beat up was the same guy you were looking for?”
“Yes…” The police officer raised an eyebrow. “Well, Ms. Higurashi. We’ll be in
contact with you…” He walked off. She went over to the desk. “Um. Yes, can I ask
what room Sesshoumaru Taisho will be in?”
“State your relation,”
“I…uh… well I’m not… you see I was the one…”
“Sorry, only family and friends are allowed in ICU,” the woman stated
robotically. Kagome nodded and began to head towards the door. She let out a
heavy sigh. “I was gonna marry that man…”
Just then came a tug at her sleeve. She turned.
“Did you want to see him?” A pretty young nurse with red hair was staring back
with a sympathetic look on her face. Kagome looked at her tag. “Ayame..”
“Uh..what?”
“Mr. Taisho. You wanted to see him, right? Here, come with me.” She led Kagome
down the hall to some elevators, flashing her pass every now and then to
security and telling Kagome to stick close. Once on the floor, Ayame led her to
the room where they had put Seshoumaru. And much to her surprise, and the
Ayame’s as well, it was full of people… Ayame quicky opened the door and looked
around.
“Excuse me, who are all of you?”
“We’re his family!” said a tall and equally handsome man. He too had silver hair
and gold eyes. They had to be related…
“Yeah, we’ve got a right to see him!” came an amusing looking old man with large
eyes.
“Technically, you’re not family, Totosai.” On a nearby chair were two very cute
looking young children, a girl with silky brown hair, tan skin, and slanted
eyes. She looked like a child model. She was the one talking. Beside her was a
younger boy with shorter hair thrown up into a ponytail. He was playing with a
bunch of toys. Kagome scanned the room some more and found a beautiful woman
with very long hair and soft eyes and an old lady hunched over the side of his
bed.
“Rin, I am his godfather. I am as good as family!”
“Who’s this girl?” the elder woman asked.
“Mother, you shouldn’t be so harsh,” the pretty one scolded.
“Hush, Izayoi. This nurse complains about family and brings this stranger into
the room.”
“Stranger?!” Ayame looked angry. But it was true. Kagome didn’t understand why
she brought her up there. “This ‘stranger’ is his fiancée!” At this everyone
looked up and at Kagome, their eyes shot open in shock. As did Kagome’s. She
couldn’t find her voice, suddenly.
“Wai, Sesshy no Onii-san is getting married!” came the two children as the
hopped over and ran circles around Kagome. Izayoi smiled brightly and gave the
girl a tremendous hug, followed by the handsome man and then Totosai.
“I apologize for the circumstance of our meeting, but you see… we don’t
communicate with Sesshoumaru much. He left us and rarely made contact. We only
knew in passing that he was engaged at all! But it’s good to meet you! Come, let
us talk over lunch” The man was obviously Sesshoumaru’s father. Kagome’s mouth
moved but she still couldn’t get any worlds out. What a mess, she thought. What
a freaking mess.
This mess, of course, changed her life forever.
