“Mother I’m home.” Shana yelled while quickly locking the door behind her. It was a really long day of school, but finally the day was over and all she desired was to have a nice dinner and sleep, “mom? Where are you? Is anyone home?” Shana kicked off her shoes nerve the welcome mat and let her backpack slip out of her hand to fall to the ground beside the door. She then quickly looked around the empty living room then peered around the corner into the also very empty kitchen. Shana noticed the stove was still on, “someone must be home if the stove’s on” She made her was slowly up the carpeted stair case to her room.
As she reached the top of the stairs she noticed a very creepy and strange cry coming from the room beside hers. The cries started to get louder as each second passed. Shana rapidly made her way to the direction of the cries when she detected it was coming from her younger sister Kiya’s room.
She pushed open the door only to see her sister on the floor with tears streaming down her face. Shana ran to her sister’s aid to help her in anyway possible. She grabbed her sister‘s shoulders and carefully pushed her upward so the two were making eye contact, “Kiya what happened? What’s wrong?” She painfully watched as her sister clenched her teeth and held her eyes shut, “Shana! My chest! It hurts! Please help me!” Fresh tears rolled down Kiya’s soggy red face. Shana gently picked up the young girl in pain and placed her on the near by bed. Shana glanced down at her sister that was starting to breath harder, “where’s mom?”
Kiya slightly opened her eyes to gaze up at her big sister. Her eyes shut once more as she rose from the bed to grip tightly to Shana’s arm, “mom hasn’t come home from work yet.” Kiya had hardly finished her sentence before she fell back down to the soft bed rapping her arms around her chest, “Shana! Help! It’s getting hard to breath!” Kiya yelled out as loud as she could trying to reveal the pain.
Shana took one last painful look into her sister’s eyes then quickly got to her feet and ran over to the door, “listen Kiya. I’m not a doctor. I’m going to get the help you need. Stay here. I’ll be back as soon a possible.” Kiya watched as her sister ran out of the room at and down the stair case at top speed. Kiya quietly managed to say something before she passed out in pain, “please big sister. Help me. Don’t leave me here.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shana ran up and down the little town that she called home in looking for a doctor, but there was no doctor in sight. It was 6:00 p.m. and all the doctor offices were closed. It was a weekend so they closed early, “shit! What am I going to do now?” Shana ran around the back of the office hoping someone was there. She spotted a car, so that meant the doctor didn’t leave for home. She peaked through the slightly opened window of the doctor offices and saw a figure moving around inside! What luck! The doctor really didn’t leave for home yet.
Shana jiggled the door handle but it was locked up tight. She started banging on the door in hope that the person would have a good heart and open the door out of kindness, but still no answer, “please! Please! Open the door! My little sister needs help!” Shana yelled at the top of her lungs trough the open window. Tears started rolling down her face thinking of the pain Kiya was going through right now. Shana banged harder on the backdoor and yelled more hoping the person would hear her cries for help, “please! Someone! Help my sister!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kiya carefully listened as she heard the front door swing open. She was so thankful Shana came back so soon. Her breathing was getting heavier by the minute, “Shana! Help! Please!” Kiya heard foot steps coming from the stairs. Kiya was still lying on the bed where Shana placed her. It was too painful to move. She watched as her bedroom door opened slowly. Kiya’s eyes opened wide when her mother walked into the empty room, “mom!” Tears rolled down the young girl’s cheeks as she gazed at her mother running to her side, “Kiya! What’s wrong? Tell mom.” Her mother rapped her arms around Kiya and embraced her tightly. Kiya pushed away from her mother trying to keep her breathing in order, “mom my chest. It burns. And it’s getting harder to breath.” Kiya closed her eyes and made a fist when the pain hit her chest, “it hurts! Help me!” She watched as her mother ran her fingers over her forehead, “Kiya where’s your sister?” Kiya opened her eyes to look at her mother, “mom. She went to go get help. But she hasn’t come back yet.”
“Mom. It’s getting harder to talk.” He mother placed a kiss on Kiya’s hand and held them in her own hands, “Kiya don’t waste your energy. You don’t have to talk. I’ll stay here by your side until Shana returns.” Kiya glanced at her mother as she placed her head down on the bed, “Kiya. Try and rest. I know it’s hard when you’re in that much pain. But please try and rest.” She watched her mother close her eyes and tightened her grip on Kiya’s hand. The young girl closed her eyes and rested her head on the pillow. The pain increased but she did as her mother said and stayed calm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shana ran up and down the town once more, but again no doctor in sight, “that basterd doctor. The damn person wouldn’t even help me!” Shana quickly glanced down at her mini clock around her belt, “damn! I’ve been running around town for two hours!” She caught sight of a near by pay phone, “great! I’ll call mom at work!”
Shana reached into her pant pocket looking for some spare change. She pulled out a quarter and started to run towards the pay phone. She grabbed to phone off the hock and inserted the coin, “please someone pick up the phone.” The phone rang and rang but no answer. Shana was about to give in but right before she hung up the phone she heard someone on the other side,
“Hello. You have reached Matuzi Hair salon. How my I help you?”
“It’s Shana. Is my mother there?”
“Oh hi Shana. Sorry your mother left about a half an hour ago.”
“Thank you. Do you know where she went?”
“Well she said she was going to go straight home because Kiya didn’t go to school today.”
“Thank you! I have to go. Bye.”
Shana quickly put the phone back on the hock and started running back towards her home. If her mother left a half an hour ago then she should be home now. Shana kept running as fast as her legs could take her. She was running non stop for three minutes and she was already tired. Shana stopped for a second to catch her breath. Some kids form her class quickly ran up to Shana and grabbed her by the shoulders. One of the guys looked into her eyes and said as he tried to catch his breath, “Shana! You have to get back to your house! There’s a fire! Your mom and Kiya are still inside and the fire trucks haven’t come yet! ” As the word fire left the boy’s mouth Shana was off running down the street once more, “how the hell did a fire start!?” Shana thought hard as she made her way across the busy road. As she reached the other sif thf the street she froze.
“It started in the kitchen! The stove!” Shana flashed back to when she first walked into her home after the long day of school. As she looked around she spotted that the stove was left on. Shana snapped out of her thoughts and continued to dash off towards the house. She cursed at herself for not turning the damn stove off. Now her family was going to pay because of her stupidity! “Please be ok! Please!” Shana never noticed how far she was away from the house. Shana quickly turned the corner and ran into the front yard of her flaming home. She noticed that people were also standing in her yard watching as her home burned into ash.
Tears rolled down Shana’s face like a fast flowing river as she started to run toward the entrance of the house. Shana just reached the door handle when was stopped by a young man, “you must not enter the house. It’s dangerous.” Shana pulled her arm away from the man’s embrace, “my mother and sister are still inside! I need to go inside!” The man glared at the girl and quickly griped her arm dragging her away from the burning building, “we have to wait till the fire trucks come. I’m sorry. We can’t let anyone go in.” Puddles of tears were around Shana’s feet as she fell to her knees, “please! You have to get them out!” Shana griped the grass beneath her remembering the pain her sister faced before she left the house in search for help. Poor Kiya was in so much pain.
Shana looked up at the man that stopped her, “when did the fire start?” The man turned his gaze away from the flames and down to Shana, “well I found out about the fire about an hour ago. People say it was going on for an hour and a half.” He watched as the girl rose to her feet in attempt to enter the burning building once again, “I have to save them!” The man did as before and tightened his grip on her arm. Shana fought back with every bit of energy she had left, but it was no use. She wasn’t strong enough at the moment. Shana looked through the window of her sister’s room hoping for an answer to if her family was alive or not. She saw no movement at all in the small room. All she could see were flames burning down the door. Pain struck her heart as she watched the door to Kiya’s room burn to ash.
Shana’s head turned when she heard the sweet sounds of the arriving fire trucks. Shana got to her feet as they parked the trucks on the street. She watched as they jumped out of the truck and headed towards the flames. They ran right pasted her at full speed. Shana quickly ran up to one of the fire men and tightly griped the red uniform. The man looked down at the girl that was hanging off of him, “Please! My mother and little sister are still in there!” The man placed his hand on her shoulder and lifted her head up so he could talk to her face to face, “don’t worry we’ll get them out. Do you know where they would be?” Shana looked into his eyes as she tightened her grip on his arm, “my sister would be in her room on the second floor on the left.” The fire men gentility pulled the girl off him and walked toward the house informing his men about the information Shana gave him.
Shana stood there staring into the huge flames. It was like nothing she’d ever seen before. The flames were so big and the heat coming off from them was tremendous. She could only wait and hope that her only family were still left alive and well. Her eyes opened wide as she gazed at the two fire men that had her mother cradled in there arms. She stood in shook as they come towards her. The men brought the women away from the building and laid her down on the freshly cutss. ss. A Fire men pushed his way through the crowd towards the lady and placed his hand on the left side her chest to check her breathing.
He quickly took his hand back and studied her carefully. His eyes glanced up at his fellow workers with the look of worry written all over his face, “the woman isn’t breathing. How long will it be till the ambulance is here?” Shana was standing at the back of the crowd as she heard the words leave the man’s mouth. She pushed everyone in hay aay aside as she made her way over to her mothers side. New tears flowed down her face as she took her mothers cold hand in hers, “please. You have to do something to save her. You are trained for these kinds of things aren’t you?”
The man took the other hand of the women trying to look for a pulse. Shana watched him through red eyes as he dropped her hand and looked down to the ground, “I’m sorry kid, but she isn’t breathing and she has no pulse….” Shana got to her feet and looked at her mother’s pale white skin, “no! She can’t die! You have to do something!” Her tears dripped one by one off her face and hit the floor. The man looked up into Shana’s eyes, “listen. We can’t do anything if she’s already dead. I’m so sorry.” Shana fell down on one knee as his words hit her ears. She reached for her mother’s hand once again and held it tight with both hands, “mom.” Tears hit the women’s cold arm as they flew form her daughter’s eyes.
“We found the girl inside. She’s unconscious, but still breathing.” Shana heard the men call from the other side of the yard. She whipped her red watery eyes and took one last look at her mother before she jumped to her feet and ran over to her sister. She slipped down to her knees and watched as the men checked her breathing and pulse. Shana reached out her hand and pushed the hair out of her sister’s face as she let the tears flow out of her. She was so happy to see that her sister was alive. She didn’t know what she would do if she lost all of her family. If she had her sister by her side then she wouldn’t have to feel alone.
Shana snapped out of her thoughts when she heard the ambulance coming down the street. She cupped her sister’s cheek hoping that she could hold on a little longer. She could see clearly that Miyu was badly burned from head to toe. There wasn’t a spot left on her soft skin that wasn’t burned or covered in black ash. Shana turned her attention to the ambulance that was pulling up behind the fire truck. Five men in white jumped out of the little van. One of the fire men greeted them and told them of the situation. Two of the men dressed in white made their way over to her mother and the other three ran over to her and Miyu.
The men in white did just as the fire men. They check her breathing patterns and pulse. Shana watched her sister in worry. Two of the tree men that were standing around her carefully picked up her sister and brought her over to the open doors of the ambulance. Shana slowly got to her feet and followed her sister. She wasn’ing ing to be left there at the house with all the painful memories. She was going to go with her little sister. Shana made it to the two doors and watched as they placed her on a stretcher in side the back of the small ambulance.
Shana put her foot on the first of the side of the small van ready to get in when was stopped by a hand on her shoulder pulling her backward, “sorry little girl you can’t come.” Shana pushed the unwanted hand off her and turned to look at the man the stopped her. She quickly glanced into the man’s eyes and yelled back at him, “listen to me. Don’t ever call me little girl. I’m 16 so I don’t appreciate it. Also that’s my sister in there so I’m going if you like it or not.” Shana quickly got into the little van that they call an ambulance and positioned herself beside Miyu. She was never going to leave her sister’s side again.
Shana was never the greatest sister to the young girl. She would always pick on her or take things of hers. Shana wanted to make all that change. She wanted to start fresh with her sister. Forget the past. Forget the fire and everything else they lost. All Shana wanted now was to see her sister alive and well.
