Storming Distance
Kagome watched wistfully as the rain fell at the mouth of the cave she was settled in, perching her chin in her hands as though she were almost…bored. Should truth be told, she felt consumed with boredom, having been camped inside this stinking hole for days that went uncounted. The rainy season had begun, met greedily with the parched mouth of the dry fields, and although this was a relief for those suffering drought, Kagome could not stifle a small bit of regret.
She glanced back behind her, where her comrades slumbered with utmost peace. Her eyes grew softer then, adjusting to the darkness of the inner cave, glistening with particular love to the white-haired boy who had nestled sideways against the dwelling’s left wall. His attire was simple, the brilliant red illuminating him in the shadows, making her at ease to know he was there. One might notice that she had a rather different affection spilling from her hazel gaze hence her looking upon him…giving evidence that she thought of this strange boy more faithfully than the others. He slept silently, occasionally giving the faintest flick of his canine ears, small tremors that indicated he was encased in the land of dreams…safe and secure.
Kagome sighed quietly, turning her face back to the world outside, where the drumming of the rain began to grow thicker, and a twisted branch of lightning stretched along the sky. She shifted, suddenly nervous, and cupped her chin in her hands again. Something was coming…she could feel it in the air.
If only she had known.

It did not take long for everyone to stir. Merely hours later, Inuyasha uncurled his arms from his chest and gave a great, welcomed yawn and lifted his head, eyeing the girl at touthouth of the cave. He was worried…Kagome usually slept as well as the rest of them, and possibly longer if she was allowed. And yet, for a few days, she had seemed to get slim to no sleep at all, sitting there while the rest slumbered as though guarding them. Carefully he sniffed the air, but scenting nothing besides the expected, he sat up, brushing a white coil of hair from his face.
“Kagome,” he said softly, trying (for once) to approach at a gentle conversation, “why aren’t you sleeping? I’m worried for you.”
He must have startled her, as she jumped, whipped about to face him, and gazed for a brief moment before responding. “I’m fine. I’ll manage on a few hours.” With this, she turned again, folded her hands in her lap, and peacefully stared into the storming afternoon.
Inuyasha twitched noticeably, standing with a frustrated grunt. He had just said he was worried, and she just shooed his comment away as though he had made a statement about her shoes! He was not a patient man. “Fine, ” he said, his words sharper than before, “see if I care when you have a stupid melt down. Maybe then you’ll learn how to sleep like everyone else, instead of being so weird!” The hurt gasp she uttered made his insides jerk, but trying to shrug it off as though she meant nothing to him, he passed her, setting out into the rain.
“Inuyasha!”
He turned, watching her stand as well, picking up her arrows to follow. He regretted saying such, but he shook his head, smirking. “Don’t bother. You’ll only slow me down, Kagome. I’ll be back sooner or later.” Kagome’s eyes shimmered with a hint of tears, but the rain made Inuyasha able to doubt such a thing, and he turned before he made sure, afraid that she might bewitch him into coming back. Or even worse…apologizing.
Inuyasha pondered while he moved along the wet ground, his bare feet soon caked with mud and the hem of his pants soiled with rain and earth. The downpour itself had lessened somewhat, but the light drizzle twisted deep into the roots of his hair, making him long for a fire to rest beside. Better yet…he wished for Kagome’s kind, considerate hands to roam his bare back, tenderly brushing the soreness from his muscles…before reaching deeper and then…
He gave a rough shake of his head, frozen in step. The thought of Kagome touching him in such ways was unctedcted, leaving his mind to feel dirty, as though he had violated her somehow. His lips pressed together in a tight frown, crossing his arms over his chest, as if he felt he had to prove he had no feelings for her. “Kagome,” he rationalized with himself, “is nothing more than a jewel seeker.” He sighed and gazed up to the turmoil of sky, amber optics glittering. “Nothing more.”

Sesshomaru quickened his step, unsure as of why he had been beckoned. Rin was gone, missing from her chambers since last eve, and his eyes narrowed, swearing at the world should she be harmed. He had grown to care for this little whelp, since she had collected things for him whilst he recovered from a normally fatal wound. He recollected the memories, closing his eyes briefly to flutter page by page of their life thus far, in which he had rendered a helpless affection he had never known he was capable of feeling. Her messy hair…the few missing teeth…even the scent she gave when she warded away bathing for a few day’s time. He had come to accept it all. And now that it was lost, he felt a faint lust to have it returned.
He had first worried about Rin when she failed to appear at his bedtime, as she was normally nestled within the fur of his blanket, intent on sharing a story or two. Of course, most of his fables were morbidly obsessed in the death of his younger brother, Inuyasha, but Rin smiled about them all the same. He had worried more so when a note was found attached to one of his guards, who had been pierced by an arrow, his ashes the only remains. He had only known one woman alive to be capable of this. Kagome. Inuyasha’s newest playmate. Sesshomaru had normally found the bare remains of mercy while under the assault of this small woman, as she was human…like Rin. But to take Rin herself away from him…this was unforgivable. And in the very grounds of his land at that!
The note had read very distinct commands, of which the handwriting was sloppy and ill informed on just how to go about all of this. It clearly stated, ‘Bring any shard in your possession or loose the girl forever.’ But this was a stupid mistake…everyone knew that Sesshomaru, although quite able to obtain the shards of power, did not have and did not yearn for such. At this realization, he partly wondered if this really was the work of Inuyasha and his Kagome, but he had no time to dawdle. Should they not have his Rin, he might find himself pleasure in taking what they had gathered and making it his bounty. Less work, more reward.
So the white-haired demon moved with liquid grace, his elegance only hindered by his quivering anger. He wanted his girl back…and he wanted her now. Until the soft hands of Rin lay upon his chest, and her eyes fell upon him with that familiar, innocent smile, he would find no strength in him to accept being calm. Nothing would stop him from reclaiming -his- Rin.
