Chapter One
Disclaimer: No owning of any sort going on here. Nothing here but us chickens.
Oh, and be warned: This is a Death Fic. You've been warned. So no flames, all right?
“Inuyasha!” Kagome’s cry echoed off the valley walls. The half-man,
half-demon figure of Inuyasha sped between the forest trees, toward the
frightened voice of the teenage girl. They had become separated from
each other after splitting up from Miroku, Sango, and Shippo, and he
was sure he could sense the presence of a large, powerful demon. Now
panic began to set in as he frantically traced the scent of his friend.
He came to a screechialt alt as he reached the edge of the forest and
the opening of a large canyon.
“Kagome!” he called, finding her pinned to the side of the canyon. A
white, sparkling lion-like creature was snarling menacingly at her,
large teeth shining in the sunlight. Inuyasha drew the Tetsuisga and
leaped from the canyon wall, bringing the blade down at the demon’s
head. The lion roared and jumped back, narrowly avoiding the sharp
sword.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome cried again. “You came!”
“Of course I did,” he responded, slightly insulted. “What made you
think I wasn’t?” He smirked at her for a slight instant before dashing
forward, looking to slice his claws across the demon’s nose. As they
slid through the lion’s flesh, Inuyasha suddenly felt his fingers
freezing. He cried out and drew his hand back, icy blue blood staining
his claws. “What hellhell…?”
“What’s wrong?” Kagome asked, concern sounding in her voice.
“My fingers!” he called back. “They’ve gone numb!” He looked down at
his hands, finding that his digits had turned blue and were shaking
uncontrollably. “What the hell is going on?” He had no more time to
contemplate his condition as he was suddenly confronted by a large
white paw with several long claws. He dodged it easily, shaking his
right hand, trying to bring the feeling back into his fingers.
“Kagome, you need to get out of here!” Inuyasha shouted. “I don’t know
what this demon is, but it’s dangerous! Go, now!”
“But…” she began, but stopped. He knew best, she decided. She turned
and began running down the canyon, away from the fighting demons, but
screamed when she realized that the white lion was chasing after her.
“Inuyasha!”
“Get away from her!” Inuyasha demanded, running after it with the
Tetsuisga glowing. He braced himself and was closing in when the demon
lion turned and opened its mouth, a blast of cold wind firing from it.
“What?” Inuyasha gasped as he attempted to jump out of the way. The
cold blast hit him, knocking him backwards into the rock wall.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome screamed. “Are you all right?”
“Kagome! Keep going!” Inuyasha yelled back as he landed hard on his
hands and feet. His body shivered with cold as he attempted to recover
from the cold blast. “What the hell is this thing?” he thought out
loud. He wrapped his fingers tighter around the helm of the Tetsuisga
and leapt forward, shouting in anger and in determination as the blade
made contact with the flesh between the lion’s shoulder blades. The
lion roared in pain as its body was split open and in a giant
explosion, cold wind blew out from its body, knocking Inuyasha
backwards into the wall again, but with much more force. His skull
cracked on the hard rock and he collapsed onto the ground.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome screamed as she was thrown upwards, finding herself
flying above the canyon as her body was chilled to the bone by the
brilliantly cold wind. Her scream sounded across the forest as she
found herself fast approaching the jagged rocks of the canyon. Her body
tumbled over and over and she shut her eyes in terror, her mind racing
with silent prayers as she approached her certain doom. Tears streamed
down her face as she waited for her tremendous impact with the rocks
below. But when the impact came, it was not as she had expected at all.
She felt herself land on two appendages that hugged her close to a warm
body. Her eyes flew open and she gasped in surprise when she realized
that she had been caught in the arms of an ally who had leapt from one
side of the canyon and landed on his feet on the other.
“Koga!” she exclaimed. “Where did you come from?”
“I heard you scream,” he replied, setting her down on her feet. “Are
you all right?”
She nodded, but the motion suddenly made her feel rather dizzy. She put
a hand on her forehead and tottered, fearing that she was to fall back
into the canyon. But Koga stopped her descent with his arm.
“You’re not all right, you’re hurt,” he deducted. “Don’t worry, Kagome.
I’ll get you somewhere safe.” He picked her up again, cradling her in
his arms as he took off running away from the canyon.
“Oh, but…” she mumbled into his chest. “Inuyasha…”
Koga cringed at the sound of the name. “He’s a big boy. He can take
care of himself,” he replied. “You, on the other hand, are in need of
some help.”
“But, Inu… yasha…” Kagome protested softly, but the warmness of Koga’s
body was so comforting to her that she found she was having trouble
keeping her eyes open. “Inu… yasha…”
Koga refused to stop. He held her close to him, feeling her tremble in
his embrace. Her skin was so cold, it felt like ice against his body,
and he could hear her teeth chattering as she nuzzled her face into his
chest. He had to keep her warm, he decided, and the best place for him
to do it was away from that half-breed mutt of a demon, Inuyasha. After
all, should Inuyasha find Kagome in Koga’s arms, he was sure to take
her away from him. And Kagome belonged with Koga.

“Inuyasha! Inuyasha!” Shippo called, perched on Miroku’s shoulder.
“Where is that guy?”
“We need to find him quickly,” Sango announced from above them on
Kirara’s back. “We were able to stop the Fire Lion, but the Ice Lion is
sure to be around somewhere.”
Miroku nodded his agreement. “We cannot allow Inuyasha and Kagome to
fight the creature alone.”
Kirara lifted her head and sniffed the air. She growled slightly and
picked up her pace.
“What is it, Kirara?” Sango asked. “Do you smell something?”
The nekomata continued her ascent through the forest and finally
arrived at the edge of a great canyon. Miroku and Shippo followed
after, and Shippo pointed excitedly into the canyon.
“Look! There he is!” he announced.
Miroku took a position behind Sango on Kirara’s back and the group flew
down the rocky walls and landed softly a few yards from where the
half-demon lay on his stomach, his head turned to one side.
“Inuyasha, are you okay?” Shippo asked worriedly as he approached the
motionless form.
“Don’t touch him, Shippo,” Sango warned.
“It looks as though he met the Ice Lion,” Miroku said, noticing the
still blue tinge of Inuyasha’s fingers and the ice still clinging to
his red kimono.
“Where’s Kagome?” Shippo asked.
Sango knelt down beside Inuyasha and laid a hand on his back. “He’s
still breathing,” she reported. “We need to get him somewhere warm. As
for Kagome, we can only hope she escaped the Ice Lion without harm.”
Shippo shivered and looked down the canyon. “It’s so cold here. Do you
think Kagome’s okay?”
“She’s proven herself capable of many things before,” Miroku replied.
“I wouldn’t worry about her just yet. We will find her, but right now
our top priority should be warming up Inuyasha here.”
Miroku went to join Sango beside the half-demon’s body and the two
worked together to lift him onto Kirara’s back. Shippo glanced around
worriedly, hoping to catch some glimpse of Kagome somewhere, but to no
avail. He climbed onto Miroku’s shoulder as the party began climbing
out of the canyon.
