What Her Gentle Smile Hides

(A/N: I am SO sorry for taking so long to update! My muse decided to abandon me when I needed her the most, so I had to track her down, tie her up and drag her back to that little spot in my mind where I keep all of my creative thoughts, lol. She currently is sitting at a desk with a large shotgun pointed to the back of her head and being forced to help me create by Mr. K. (Any Gravitation watchers? XD) Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the updated chapter!!! Thanks for all of the reviews!!! PS: I also updated my Author profile; New recommended reading, favorite authors, little tidbits about me…Enjoy!!! Oh, before I forget; I love ALL of my reviews because they are SO funny! Thanks for them, but here is one that really made me smile from Harmony:

“omg, another GREAT chapter. and thanks SO much for the compliments! i noticed something when i was reading the replies to the reviews at the beginning of this chapter: we seem to be a kind of closely knitted circle of authors on here who respect/love each other's work. Selina, Hikari, me, you, l0ver... I just think that's neat.”

Honestly, I feel the same way. Author love! Thanks for all of the reviews and I look forward to reading all of YOUR stories and updates as well! ^_^)

Chapter 9: What Her Gentle Smile Hides…

Kagome felt as if someone were wrapping their hands around her throat as the feeling of being punched in the stomach to the point of sickness overcame her. Her body felt cold and all of her muscles had suddenly locked up on her. Had Koga not been standing behind her to steady her weakening body, she was positive she would have gone over in a dead faint.

“Kagome, are you alright?” he asked.

Slowly, she raised her head, her eyes meeting with the soft brown ones of her elder sister’s as they sat at the kotatsu. Finding her voice, Kagome barely whispered,

“Wh…what did you say, Kikyo?”

Kikyo calmly took a long sip of her tea and sat it down, smiling gently. She hadn’t expected Koga to escort Kagome home from school, but the more people that knew, the better.

“Kagome-Chan, Inuyasha and I are going to have a baby. Isn’t it wonderful?”

Kagome lowered her head, ignoring the nauseating feeling that was trying to overcome her entire body. Pregnant? Her only sister? With Inuyasha’s child? She closed her eyes, taking a few deep breaths. She prayed that someone would wake her up and that it would all be a bad dream, but it wasn’t. This was the reality in front of her. Kagome looked up, glancing at Inuyasha who may have been smiling, but Kagome could tell he was as torn as she was. But why would he have any reason to be? Kikyo was the woman of his dreams and carrying his first child. Why would he be torn? Where did he have the right to be, she thought angrily.

“Kagome-Chan?”

Kagome quickly raised her head, wearing a bright smile that didn’t reach her eyes. Even Koga could tell she was faking it.

“Kikyo! I’m so happy to hear this! So, I’ll be an aunt?”

Kikyo breathed a sigh of relief. She was so worried at what Kagome’s reaction was going to be, but she was glad that Kagome was taking it very well. Kikyo invited Koga and Kagome to join her and Inuyasha at the kotatsu. After getting them tea, Kikyo took her seat beside Inuyasha.

“Yes, I cannot wait. Kagome, would you like to have a little niece or a nephew?”

“I’d love to have a nephew! I bet he’ll be so cute! And when he gets older, we can have HIM do all of the hard work around the shrine!”

Inuyasha looked at Kagome, seeing she was obviously very happy about the entire thing, especially if she was making jokes. Inuyasha could only sigh. He’d fucked up big time. He was excited, but…

“How far along are you, Kikyo-Sama?” Koga asked, drinking his tea.

“About two months or so. I suppose we have a lot of planning to do, nee, Inuyasha?” Kikyo smiled at the future father of her child.

“Yeah. I’ll do my best to start making preparations in my time.” He smiled.

“In your time?” Koga asked.

Kagome and Kikyo froze; Koga didn’t have any indication that Inuyasha was from a different world and they intended to keep it that way.

“Uh…what he means is that it’ll take a lot of his time and dedication to start preparing for the child!” Kagome giggled nervously.

Kikyo shot Inuyasha a small glare, mentally reminding him to mind his tongue and what he said in front of other people. Koga nodded with a small grin.

“Fatherhood, huh? Congrats. I know it’ll be a while before I start havin’ kids, but I’m looking forward to that day nonetheless.”

Kagome blushed, lowering her head in her lap as the vision of Koga and her having children entered her mind. She could see their two children playing with their handsome father in the snow while she brought them out hot chocolate and when the day was over, she’d tuck each child in and sing to them. Kagome couldn’t suppress a small smile at the very thought of being a mother. Even if for a moment, it erased the painful, heart wrenching thought that now, Inuyasha could never be hers. Koga glanced at Kagome out of the corner out of her eye with a small sigh. It had only been two days since they began their ‘trial’ dating, but already, one of the main objectives of their dating had been blown completely apart. So much for making Inuyasha jealous…

“Nee, Kagome-Chan,” Koga began.

“Hmm?” she asked looking up at him.

“What do you say you and I have a few kids someday?”

Kagome looked at him as if he’d dropped a plate at a dinner full of aristocrats. He was grinning from ear to ear, watching her blush from ear-to-ear.

“Have you lost your damn mind?!” Inuyasha raged.

“I’m only teasing her.” Koga smirked at Inuyasha.

Kikyo giggled a little; the look on Kagome’s face was more than priceless.

“Well, I’m not sure if Kagome-Chan is ready for marriage, much less children, Koga-San. Though, it would be a great service to me if you could watch her while we were gone.”

“Gone?” Kagome asked, quickly looking at her sister.

Kikyo gave a small nod, hoping Kagome wouldn’t be too devastated with the next bout of news she was about to deliver…

“Yes, for the next few months, Inuyasha and I will be traveling back and forth to um…Kyoto, to Inuyasha’s home, to prepare for the arrival of his child. Then, before the child is born, Inuyasha and I will marry. We plan on moving to Kyoto after that.”

Kagome both admired and resented Kikyo for having such concrete plans for the future, but then it dawned on her…

“That’s all well and good, but as Kagome’s teacher, I have to ask what is going to become of her and the shrine.”

“Psh. ‘As Kagome’s teacher’ my ass…You know damn well this would be a perfect opportunity to take advantage of a situation you know could damn well work in your favor!” Inuyasha growled, standing.

“Inuyasha…!” Kikyo glared.

“No, this is insane! Once this pup is born, Kagome will come live with us! I’m not going to leave her here for some sort of pervert to prey upon!”

“Excuse me?” Koga said, standing.

“Inuyasha, you’re being irrational! What about the shrine?” Kikyo asked.

“Do you just plan on leaving her here by herself?” Inuyasha turned to look at Kikyo.

Kikyo, even while sitting, stood her ground. She took a long sip of her tea before looking at Kagome who seemed to be caught in the crossfire of male egos and questions about the future.

“I trust Kagome. She is a fine priestess and knows the shrine better than I. I see no problem why Kagome couldn’t live here on her own. It would be an inconvenience to have the child here at the shrine, don’t you agree, Inuyasha?”

”Hell no! The baby can stay in that spare room upstairs…”

“Inuyasha, you know very well that is a storage room.” Kikyo sighed.

Kagome slowly stood up, looking at the three people in the room, but her eyes stayed locked on Inuyasha’s.

“Inuyasha, once more, you are trying to decide for me. I may be young, but I can run the shrine just as well as anyone else can. You need to stop concerning yourself with me and focus more on my sister and your unborn child.”

”But I…” Inuyasha growled.

“Moreover…”

Kagome narrowed her eyes, throwing Inuyasha a glare that Kikyo would have been proud of.

“How I choose to see Koga is my own business.”

“He’s too old for you! SEVEN years older than you! And he’s your teacher! I’ll be damned if I let you date a damn pedophile and whether you like it or not, you are moving to Kyoto or wherever with Kikyo and I! That’s final!”

Kikyo slammed her tea down on the table and stood up. Kagome recognized that look, though she’d never had it pointed directly at her; it was Kikyo’s look of ‘I have had it’.

“Inuyasha, choose your next words wisely, for I shall not allow you sit here and try and control Kagome’s fate.”

“Do your worst, Kikyo! You know as well as I do that this set-up is all wrong!”

“Inuyasha…” Kikyo said calmly.

Kagome could sense the spiritual energy emitting from Kikyo increase one-hundred-fold. Kikyo quickly held up two fingers and tapped Inuyasha throat with them before he could even blink.

“Shut your mouth!”

Inuyasha’s eyes widened and he grabbed his throat feeling a slight pressure closing around his entire neck. Koga and Kagome watched in amazement as several small beads of light began forming at the base of his neck, completing a strange looking necklace when the glowing had stopped.

“What the…?” Inuyasha growled.

“Inuyasha, I shall warn you once more; choose your next words wisely. That rosary around your neck isn’t something to be taken lightly.”

”What the hell is this?!” Inuyasha yelled.

Kikyo turned to Kagome and Koga, bowing slightly.

“Regardless of the nature of your relationship, I’d like you to stay here, Kagome, and Koga, I’d appreciate it if you watched over Kagome from time to time. These next few months are going to bring such change and I don’t want Kagome to feel as if she’s been all but forgotten.”

Kagome lowered her head, feeling her body shake with the onset of tears. Koga bowed showing the highest of respect to Kikyo.

“Yes, but I can assure you, our relationship is completely innocent. I’ll watch after her as my student, but engaging in a further relationship with her won’t be my attention. You have my word, Kikyo-Sama.”

Kikyo smiled assuredly and looked at Kagome. The final decision was ultimately up to her. Placing her hands on Kagome’s shoulders, she gave her younger sibling the most honest and reassuring smile she could have.

“Well, Kagome-Chan? The choice is yours; do you want to stay here, tend to the shrine and continue high school, or will you come to ‘Kyoto’ with Inuyasha and I? There are positives and negatives to both results, but as long as you are happy and regret nothing, I’ll support your decision always, because I am your sister and nothing less.”

Kagome lowered her head, tears streaming down her cheeks. Everything was happening so fast…Kikyo was pregnant and she intended to marry Inuyasha, and then they’d live in the Feudal Era, which Kikyo disguised as ‘Kyoto’. Kagome bit her lip gently. She was only fifteen, would be starting high school in a year and all of a sudden, the entire Higurashi shrine was hers? Koga, she didn’t see as a current concern; after all, their relationship was innocent for the most part. Kagome shook her head…how could she live with Kikyo’s guidance? She knew she shouldn’t, but at the same time…

“I…I’ll stay here.”

”Wh…what?!” Inuyasha barely managed to yell.

“I. Will. Stay. Here. I’ll build up the Higurashi shrine and make it better; this is my home after all.”

”Are you certain that this is what you want, Kagome-Chan?”

Kagome looked at Inuyasha who seemed all but lost. Kagome could read all of his thoughts in his eyes; he loved her. She knew that Inuyasha loved her, but the fact of the matter that he was not only betrothed to Kikyo and getting ready to prepare for a child with her spoke levels. There was no more room for Kagome to interfere in their lives any longer. Besides, Kikyo needed Inuyasha more than anything right now. Kagome was positive that Koga would take care of her if she ever needed help, but one thing was for certain; Inuyasha loved her…just as she loved him. Kagome looked at Kikyo, smiling.

“I was going to inherit the shrine anyway, right? I’m just getting it a little sooner than I expected. It’ll be no problem! Just make sure I can come and visit you guys, okay?”

“Of course. But Kagome, we won’t be leaving for a few months. Maybe into my sixth month is when we’ll depart for ‘Kyoto’. We’ll be going bath and forth like we planned, but let’s not say our goodbyes so soon.”

“Okay.” Kagome smiled.

Kikyo took Kagome’s hand and led her over to Koga, who seemed all but forgotten in the insanity. Kikyo knew that Koga did harbor feelings for Kagome, but her age was a factor and at this time in Kagome’s life, she needed someone to turn to for guidance and not in the form of a perspective lover.

“Koga, Kagome has a small temper, can sometimes mess up and can be unpredictable at times, but…”

Kikyo bowed as low as she ever had in her life.

“She is my sister and the funniest, charming, kindly young woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Regardless of where your relationship takes you, please, watch over her.”

Koga looked at Kagome, a gentle smile appearing on his face. He held up his thumb and grinned.

“You don’t even have to worry about a thing.”

”I’m glad. Well, I suppose all that’s left is to have a celebration, naming you as the sole owner of Higurashi Shrine.”

”S…sole owner?! By why so soon?!” Kagome asked.

“Well, why beat around the bush? It’s a small inheritance ceremony, naming you the owner of Higurashi shrine. Besides, what could I, a soon-to-be-retired, priestess have use for it?”

This last piece of news didn’t come as a shock to Kagome. Kagome knew that once a priestess took a husband and wed, it was her decision to continue to serve people or retire. Kagome bowed her head with a smile.

“I’ll do my best in my training, Kikyo.”

“That’s what I wanted to hear. Now,”

Kikyo smiled at Kagome and Koga.

“I’m certain you’ve both had long days. Koga-San, will you be staying for dinner, or…?”

“Nah, thanks but no thanks, Kikyo-Sama. I have some work to do at home, but I’ll take you up on your invite next time.”

”Well, I hope to see you soon, Koga-San.”

”Count on it. Congrats, Kikyo-Sama.”

”Want me to walk you out, Koga?” Kagome asked.

”Yeah. See ya later, everyone.”

Kikyo waved to Kagome and Koga as the left the house, heading for the large shrine steps. Kikyo turned to look at Inuyasha with a sigh. He’d sat down at the kotatsu some time ago and hadn’t been addressed in some time. Kikyo took her place beside him and poured him more tea.

”Inuyasha, what has come over you? I understand your sibling concern for Kagome, but you have to understand that she is fifteen…She is growing up.”

Inuyasha turned his head with a small huff.

“I know that…Kikyo, I just…”

Inuyasha ran a hand through his hair and rested his head on the table.

“I guess it’s still a bit much to comprehend. I mean, this is what I’ve dreamed of…Having a child with you, living in my time together where your powers could be used to help people and just watching our pup grow up into a fine being.”

”So what is it that troubles you? Is it leaving Kagome behind?”

Inuyasha took Kikyo’s hand and nodded with a sigh.

“I just don’t like the thought of leaving someone as innocent as Kagome in Koga’s hands.”

”Inuyasha, it’s alright. Try not to worry about it too much, alright? The well isn’t limited to just us passing through it; Kagome’s spiritual powers are more than enough for her to come and see us and likewise for us. Don’t worry, she’ll be fine. Now, I’m going out to the market.”

Inuyasha watched Kikyo stand up with a smile.

“Is there anything you want or need?”

”Hold on, I’m coming with you!” Inuyasha said, standing up.

“Inuyasha, I’m pregnant, not helpless. Stay here, alright? Try not to fight with Kagome, alright?”

“Yeah…okay.” Inuyasha sighed.

Kikyo left the house at the same time Kagome was just entering after seeing Koga off. Kagome was more than surprised to see Kikyo leaving.

”Are you going somewhere?”

“Yes, just to the market for tomorrow night’s dinner.”

”Let me!”

Kikyo giggled.

“You’re as bad as Inuyasha. No, you have homework and your duties to tend to, remember?”

”But I…!”

”Don’t worry, Kagome-Chan. I’ll be back soon. Look after Inuyasha.”

”Yes, Kikyo.”

Kikyo grabbed her usual shopping bag and headed out of the house, closing the door behind her. Kagome sighed a little bit before heading to her room. She laid down on the bed, closing her eyes for a minute, still trying to process everything that had happened. Koga had told her not to worry and that everything would be alright, but would it? Kagome couldn’t imagine living in a house with no Kikyo or Inuyasha. Especially a house made for almost four people…

“Kagome.”

Kagome’s eyes flew open and she quickly saw Inuyasha standing over her bed. She backed up against the wall, fear evident in her eyes.

“You idiot! Don’t you know how to knock?”

”I did! Anyway, we have to talk…”

Kagome sighed, running her hands through her shortened hair.

“Another talk, Inuyasha? What’s there left to talk about?”

Inuyasha sat down on the bed for a minute. He knew this wasn’t going to be easy, especially when he’d managed to fuck up so many times before. Kami forgive him, but what did he want with a little weak girl like Kagome? He closed his eyes for a minute; no, she was far from weak. She was strong, filled with life, love and happiness…and she was different from Kikyo.

“Inuyasha?”

”I’m sorry, okay? I shouldn’t have been leading you on the way I had. But I mean…it’s not like I don’t…have…feelings for you or anything like that.”

”HA! Don’t make me laugh!”

Kagome stood up, hands on her hips as she glared at the boy on her bed.

“Why would you drag me around so much if you did? Inuyasha, I understand that…”

”No, no you don’t understand, you little damn brat!”

He grabbed her by her shoulders, praying she wouldn’t summon her inner strength to blow his hands clean off.

“Look, you don’t understand at all! What was I supposed to do? You’re my future-wife’s little sister! I started having feelings for you the day you turned thirteen; you may have been a scrawny little thing, but you were blooming into womanhood and I was sensitive to that. I always thought that you could be ‘little Kagome-Chan’ in my eyes, but there is just no way I can look at you like that anymore! I don’t even know what the hell came over me either…!”

He released her and stormed over to her window, releasing a deep sigh.

“You’re a brat at times, your body has nothing on Kikyo’s and you’re just…too much at times. But dammit…”

He turned to look at Kagome in a way he’d never looked at her before now.

“You and Kikyo are so different, it’s then I began to see you as two separate people…You’re bold, unyielding and just so…out there. You make people want to be around you and love you without even trying. Like me, and I’ve been around you for years.”

Inuyasha took a deep breath before approaching her. She was beautiful, more so than her sister and in her own way. But he was the one she wanted and now, in that moment, they both realized it could never be that way. He was going to be a father soon…A father and a husband. Kagome knew she should have pushed him away, but as he drew his lips down to hers, she closed her eyes and prayed that Kami would forgive her.

Kagome wasn’t sure when, but mid-kiss, they’d managed to fall upon her soft, sweet-smelling bed. Kagome hesitantly wrapped her arms around his neck, whispering into his ear;

“Inuyasha…I love you so much…”
