Chapter Nine: The Visit

Did someone get the plates off that truck? Sango was sure it had taken her limbs too. She could hear someone talking beside her. Was that her mother singing? She was in hell and being serenaded. The demand to make it stop stuck in her throat. Why couldn’t she talk? Her mouth felt like sand paper. What had happened? She felt sore and groggy. Was she alive? An out of tone F cord, only her real mother could sound that bad. “Sha uh.” Please, or she’d be tempted to go back to sleep permanently.


“Oh, you’re awake.” Her mother was at her side. Sango tried to move her head to the right gracefully but managed an undignified flop. Yeah she was awake and still had her hearing unfortunately. Her eyes opened but everything was hazy. Blinking helped a tad and she found herself staring into an empty room. Where had the old biddy run off to? Voices came from behind her. Her mother was back with a man in white. “See, she’s awake.”


“Sango, I’m Dr. Moriaga. You were in an accident and have been asleep for a few days. Do you remember that?” Of course she did, she thought she did. She’d been walking and then she’d been really cold. Someone had been standing over her, on the other side. It was hazy but she nodded sloppily. “Good, now that you are awake we are going to need to do some tests. I hate to do it to you but it’s standard procedure. We lost you twice and need to make sure there wasn’t any permanent damage to your brain. Most of your other tests came back fine but just to be on the safe side. I’m sure you’re still pretty tired.” He turned to her mother. “The nurse will be up here shortly to take her down. If there are any visitors keep it just one at a time and short. She still needs to rest.”


“Of course,” Her mother came back to her and grabbed her hand. Sango winced as she squeezed it too hard. “We were so worried. We thought we’d lost you. All your friends are here, most of them never left. Would you like to see any of them?”


Yeah, she did. She wanted to see them all but she asked for one person. “Inuyasha,” it was confirmed when her mother nodded and left the room. It had to be him, she wasn’t sure how she knew. His voice still rang in her mind. Images flashed in her mind but mostly voices. Trying to recall everything at once was too painful. His voice mixed with sirens, she had died. One way to ensure she didn’t have to worry about exams. The back of her eyelids were already getting heavy when the door opened again.


“Hey,” Inuyasha walked around the bed. She was still pale, too pale. Doe brown eyes sought him out. There was a tube up her nose and there was still several wires attached to her. “You have no idea how much better you look.” he walked over and stood at the side. She gave him a weak smile, she’d made it. He felt awkward but she’d asked to see him before anyone else. Kagome hadn’t been too happy over it but had agreed.


“Thanks, feel better.” Her throat was sore but she needed to talk to him. “Thank you, I heard you.” Fangs appeared over the sheepish smile and he laughed. Did he have any idea how much it had helped? She knew he’d act like it was nothing but it was his voice that she had tried to focus on. The hand was welcomed as he grabbed her own. “Thought I’d stick around. So I could kick your ass, I’m not stupid.”


“What do you call walking on thin ice? There are better ways to get my attention or to get in my arms. Try not being so dramatic next time okay. I don’t think I could handle it again. Not to mention the others. Speaking of, they are snarling to see who gets to come in after me. We can talk later after you’re better. Any preference on who comes next?” He gave the hand a gentle squeeze as she shook her head no. “Okay, I’ll go get someone before they cause a riot.”


He left the bed and went out of the room. The waiting room was just down the hall. A nurse nodded towards him as he passed. Who should he tell to go back? Before he packed his bags. Heh, she’d heard him call her a stupid bitch. Made him wonder just how aware a person’s soul was during death. Kagome would want to head back next he knew. Is that who Sango really wanted to see? They were best friends but he wasn’t so sure. The fox hadn’t liked what he said but it was true. If anything he had good hearing and his name had passed the girl’s lips while unconscious. No one could deny the fact that the guy hadn’t left. If he didn’t care then why had he hung around?


The door opened for him as the male in question was coming out of the waiting room. “Where the hell are you going?” Inuyasha narrowed amber eyes at him in condemnation. Was he trying to leave now that they knew Sango had awoken? “Oh hell no, you aren’t leaving now.” He saw Kagome getting up now to go in to visit. “You aren’t going in Kagome, he is. I asked her who she wanted to see. She wants to see him for some reason. Hopefully it’s to throw his ass out of a window.”


“What I do is none of your concern but I was just going to the restroom.” Kurama squared his shoulder but glanced at the miko. “I’ll let her know you want to see her before returning. If you’d move please.” Or be knocked out of the way. He’d change after he was done. The inu was kind enough to take the bag thrust at him. “Hold this for me.” He hadn’t stayed for three days to leave the moment she woke up. The double doors opened for him to allow him back. Did she really want to see him? What the hanyou said still pricked his chest. Why had she went out in the weather?


The room was silent except for the beep of a machine as he opened the door. Was he prepared to see her? A slight amount of guilt remained knowing it was part his fault. If he’d went to see her this wouldn’t have happened. But he would have if he’d known despite his feelings. He still wasn’t sure of his feelings. He’d never thought to let a female affect him so strongly. How could his life change so drastically over a short period of time? He could still remember being able to ignore her. Now, there was no means. He tried, his ability to dismiss someone was failing him. Hiei was right, she meant something to him but what? He wouldn’t call them friends because of his attraction. Yet, she wasn’t his lover or his girlfriend. Hell he’d never had a girlfriend, just the females he slept with.


Sango opened her eyes when someone sat down on the stool next to the bed. Green eyes were studying her face. What was he doing here? Did she want him here? He’d stood her up, left her hanging. Was he feeling guilty? She searched his face for a clue and got none. She wanted to tell him to leave but his hand came to rest over hers. The touch was light but managed to chase the chill in her soul away. How could she send him away? Despite what he’d done she’d been wanting to see him. A great part of her had been hoping he’d come, just to prove that he cared.


“I can leave if you want. I don’t know if apologizing would do any good. I have no right to it.” His thumb brushed across the bruise on the top of her hand caused by being poked with a needle. There was a bandage on her forehead near the temple. She’d hit her head on a block of ice. She was lucky she hadn’t been knocked unconscious then or it wouldn’t have mattered that Inuyasha had come. He reached to brush the bangs aside so he could look in her eyes. He didn’t see any blame just confusion. “I won’t ask for forgiveness, I don’t deserve it. You have every right to be angry with me but I’d like to stay.”


“Okay,” She managed a smiled and his shoulders dropped. Had he been worried she’d send him away? It would have been the smart thing to do but she wasn’t being smart these days. It felt right to turn her face into the palm cupping her cheek. “I’m afraid it’ll be only a few minutes until I’m asleep. Not sure what they are giving me. Stay with me until I fall asleep?” A sigh of contentment escaped as he got closer. She closed her eyes and wished this wouldn’t end. When she woke up it’d probably be for tests. “I’m glad you came.”
