Chapter 9: Happy Endings
A few days later Miroku was finally feeling strong enough to go out walking in the forest. He went straight to the tree he had first met his lord at and put his hand on the rough bark of the trunk, looking up into its branches. ‘Under this sacred tree is where we first met.’
Sesshoumaru, who had been carefully keeping an eye on his servant, walked up behind the monk that was contemplatively gazing into the Goshinboku tree. He stopped just a few feet from him not wanting to interrupt his thoughts.
Miroku grinned, knowing that his master was there, and turned to smile at the demon boy. ‘Ever since then I’ve lived only for Sesshoumaru.’ he thought without regret.
Sesshoumaru suddenly glanced back the way they had travelled, staring angrily at the sensei that had just come into view. He moved to block the blonde’s way to his Miroku.
Ryukotsusei grinned. “Don’t look like that,” he chuckled. “I just came by to thank him.”
“He does not need thanks from you!” Sesshoumaru returned angrily. He was still pretty mad that the sensei had basically kidnapped the monk and then had used him to exhaustion to purify his father’s jewel.
“Sesshoumaru!” Miroku said reproachfully, coming out from behind his master to stand in front of the sensei. “How is Lord Tashio’s health?”
“Pretty good. He’s stubborn, just like someone else around here, so he’s a handful,” Ryukotsusei joked with a smile, glancing in Sesshoumaru’s direction. “He keeps trying to get up and walk around even when he’s supposed to be resting.”
“What about his shard?” Sesshoumaru questioned, ignoring the comment about him being stubborn.
The sensei’s smile widened. “You’ll have to ask him about that yourself.”
Sesshoumaru’s father came slowly down the pathway to where they were all talking. Miroku was astonished at the changes in the demon lord. He was now young and beautiful, his body fit and his golden eyes clear.
“My child,” Tashio greeted as both Sesshoumaru and Miroku kneeled on the ground before him, bowing their heads in obeisance. “Even after witnessing your father’s fate…do you still intend to walk the same path?” the lord questioned his son.
Sesshoumaru took a quick sideways glance over to Miroku. “I do not believe that my path is wrong,” he replied respectfully.
Miroku looked over to his lord in surprise. ‘Is he saying what I think he’s saying?’
“What of your duty as successor?” Lord Tashio questioned.
Again Sesshoumaru was very respectful. “I will consider that once you have passed on, father.”
Tashio frowned at his son. “How selfish!”
Sesshoumaru stood and held his hand out to Miroku to help him from the ground. He looked at his father. “That is why I wish you a long life, father.” He gave his father a rare smile and pulled the monk to his feet. “For my sake, and for Ryukotsusei’s too,” he finished, giving his father a knowing look. He nodded his head politely and then walked away, still holding the hand of the one he loved.
“What do you want to do?” Ryukotsusei asked. “Should I chase them down and bring them back?”
The demon lord stood watching as the two boys walked away. “Demons live for a thousand years…so there’s still plenty of time, no need to rush.”
Ryukotsusei grinned. “Of course, I’m the only one who could stand to be around you for a thousand years.”
Lord Tashio hid the grin that wanted to come to his lips. “Don’t be so insolent,” he replied, trying and failing to be stern.
“You really haven’t changed at all, have you? Admit it, you’re happy,” the sensei said as he gave his lord and lover a huge smile.
Lord Tashio returned Ryukotsusei’s happy face with a small smile of his own. “Be quiet,” he admonished gently. Both of the older demons continued to watch as the two boys disappeared into the forest.
