Chapter 8 – The Toad who possessed a prince, The Second Shard

I leaned against the tree that Inuyasha sat in, my eyes closed as I thought back to the talk I had had with Kaede after I had heard Inuyasha crash in to the wooden slats and broke the bridge from Kagome’s ‘Sit Boy’ though I still was a bit sceptic about her reasoning, I would follow her advice.

I had just knocked on the door frame when I heard a thump and breaking of wood and looked in the direction I had come from wandering what Inuyasha had said to get sat by Kagome. I snorted at that just as the curtain moved to reveal Kaede. “What is funny Shade?” I looked at her as I slowly went past her in to her abode. “Just Inuyasha getting sat again.”

I turned to Kaede and sat down as she lowed down across from me. “What is it ye came to see me about Shade?” I blinked at this and lowered my head to my hands. “Shade?” I looked at her through the bags of my hair. “I am wandering if I should stay with the group as I got more in the way last time than helped.” She blinked at this as her brow furrowed “From what I heard from Kagome ye helped her and Inuyasha fight Sesshomaru and keep her from being caught by the poison mist Sesshomaru created.”

I looked up at her more with my hair uncovered from my eyes that looked for help, Kaede sighed as she stood “Just give them a chance, ye may find yourself part of the group more than ye think.” I shook my head my eyes darkened a bit from worry, “What if I cause more trouble than is worth it?” Kaede moved over to the fire and sat down now holding a couple of pouches that she put next to her “All I can say to ye, is this. Do ye best, concentrate on returning the jewel to its original state, things should work out.” I then gave smile that I hid from most people. “Thanks this helped alot.” Kaede gave a nod in return “If ye be needing anymore help, I be here in the village when ye get back.

My eyes opened as I stared off into nothing, I would have to try to be not as much a burden to the other two and try to pull my weight in fighting demons as well. ‘After all Inuyasha had to save me once from Yura and the other time from Sesshomaru’ I snorted at my own thoughts and blinked my eyes coming in to focus just as something darted in front of my vision. My body without thought reacted and I sprung after the blur my eyes narrowing as I came to the river where Kagome was bathing.

I heard her screech at either me, the blur or Inuyasha as I passed right by her in pursue of the creature as it ran in to the woods. As I ran after it I picked up the sound of a whistle and saw the blurred creature run towards the sound and I followed. I soon came upon a young lad holding on to clothing of Kagome’s. My eyes narrowed “What the hell are you doing?” I could hear Inuyasha and Kagome getting closer, the lad looked up at me with a oh-god-now-I’ve-done-it look “I um er.” The lad looked petrified.

“Hey!” The lad cried out seeing an annoyed Hanyou just to the side of me “give me back my clothes!” and a human girl who looked like she was going to hit him any second. Then the lad drew a sword on us and I just sighed and crossed my arms a board look on my face “Who are you? You look suspicious.” Then the lad had only time to blink before Inuyasha crashed his foot in to the lad’s face, Kagome just looked stupefied at this. “We were just about to say the same thing.” I snorted at this as I shook my head ‘Inuyasha your temper.’

I stood beside Inuyasha staring out at the wilderness, a strange sort of calm overtaking me, ‘for the first time I feel as though I belong somewhere’ I brought a hand up to where my heart was my brows furrowing as I looked out the corner of my eye at Inuyasha ‘but what is it I feel when I am around him that I have never felt before’ I closed my eyes and sighed as I sat down and leaned my back against the tree my eyes half mast.

“You must of really been hungry.” I turned my head to the lad my head tilted as I watched him “Would you like some tea?” My eyes watched him suspiciously as he took the drink with a thank you and gulped it down like a dieing man. “Maybe there’s something in here for you two as well”, she then pulled dog biscuits out of the bag and my nose wrinkled at the smell “no thank you” I nodded to inuyasha’s answer “not hungry at the moment” I stood up and streached “But if you eat it I won’t have to carry it.”

I snorted at this and watched as Inuyasha picked up the knapsack full of god knows what. “look its not my fault you’ve got to carry around so much junk all of the time!” I sighed and walked over to the lad who was watching the exchange with wide eyes. I tapped him on the shoulder and he jumped as he looked at me “look I don’t trust you and you don’t trust me but do you know of a way to keep to people from arguing?” he blinked at this question and shook his head, I sighed and my head lowered “I knew it.”

I then blinked as the lad stood up and clashed the crisps bag between his hands as he bowed “I give you thanks woman, the chips potato were delicious!” I watched wearied as Kagome stood up as she watched him while Inuyasha looked at him suspicious still. “My name is Kagome, His is Inuyasha and her by your side for this moment is Shade.” I nodded my head when he looked at me as I crossed over to Inuyasha’s side.

Then I watched him look to the side of his face and slap Myoga who floated down to the ground flattened again. “He’s Myoga the flea.” The lad look seriously freaked out. “You said before that you were separated from your allies tell me are you a nobleman?” My eyes widened as I moved away from Kagome, Inuyasha blinked and turned his head to look at me I looked at Inuyasha “look if he is a nobleman I do not want to be near when she finds out his name.” Inuyasha blinked and nodded his head as he edged back ever so slowly away from the tree, “I’m not at liberty to reveal my family.” I kept by Inuyasha as I watched Kagome “Kagome leave the lad alone.” Then the lad turned around “It’s alright, my name is Nobunaga.”

I shook my head exasperated as Kagome’s face lit up “N-Nobunaga?” I groaned as Inuyasha shifted uncomfortable next to me as he looked at Kagome “The Nobunaga?” The poor young man looked like he wanted to run away as far as possible from Kagome who shook his hand with too much emphasis that made me groan for the stupidity that was fangirlisum (lol new word?) and moved behind Inuyasha while holding my hands over my ears.

I sighed ‘I seem to do that a lot’ and let my hands drop and shook my head when I heard Inuyasha spoke up. “Uh I wouldn’t go that way if I were…” I looked round Inuyasha and walked to the cliff edge to look down at the human who had fell down the incline and snorted in laughter at his figure at the bottom of the small incline. “Only an idiot would miss this incline” Inuyasha came up next to me as did Kagome who perched at the edge. “I told him! But he did not listen.” I snorted again and looked up at Inuyasha “Who ever listens? Most people don’t.” Inuyasha just crossed his arms and turned his head away “Feh.”


We all followed the young man to a near by village while hiding in the surrounding forest and bushes to keep out of sight, we all came to a stop very close by where several girls just coming in to adulthood were being taken away while held together by rope on each of their wrists. I had stopped after seeing this image but once I had noticed that the others were ahead of me caught up while keeping out of all the villagers sites.

I stopped close by Inuyasha’s side ignoring as they spoke to each other while my ears flicked and I focused on one of the old men who was whispering to another, although it had taken me time to get used to my demon characteristics and was still getting used to them, my hearing was one of those things I was doing really well in and I could hear perfectly what they were speaking about. “I wouldn’t want it repeated, but, they say the lord’s been possessed by some kind of demon!”

My eyes widened at his whispered words ‘Demon?’ my eyebrows furrowed as I heard Inuyasha echo my thought. I then moved passed them and ignoring their startled exclamations as I grabbed the lad, put him on my back, telling him to tell me the direction the castle was in and followed my nose to where all girls scents seem to end up at the castle on the hill.

‘It looks more like a cliff than a hill’ I looked up at the high wall as Inuyasha, Kagome caught up to me and the lad on my back. “What the fuck was that Shade?” My ears flicked in Inuyasha’s direction but I did not turn to him as I stretched out my senses and tried to analyse how far up the wall went and if I would clear it if I tried to jump over it as well as trying to scent what type of demon was in the palace.

“Shade?” I started when she touched my arm and jerked back as I accidentally knocked Nobunaga off of my back on to the grass. I snorted in shock and moved just behind Inuyasha hating to be startled like that. “I’m fine” I looked back up at the castle walls as Kagome turned her head to me “but Nobunaga says this is the place where the lord is.” I looked out the corner of my eye as he nodded “Yes this is the place where the lord resides.”

Next to me Inuyasha was studying the wall like I had done “Heh, I smell the demon stink from here.” Then I caught it the faint sense that the jewel piece Kagome had with her. “I sense a jewel shard that feels alike to the one Kagome has.” My ears twisted towards Inuyasha when I heard him growl in satisfaction and wandered why it made a funny feeling go through my chest. I placed a hand on my chest and then shook my head to ignore it and got ready to spring over the wall.

“We better go have a closer look, jump on Kagome.” I looked over as Kagome got on to Inuyasha, we got ready to leap when I felt someone climb on my back, I looked back out the corner of my eye as I scowled at Nobunaga, “Get the hell off!” I reared up as I snarled, not liking the way my hair was being held on to. “Stop please” I soon settled down “I’ve got business up there.” I scowled and let out a breath with a growl. “One time ok? Never again and don’t fucking pull my hair you eidgit.” He sighed but held on to my kimono instead.

“Hey are you coming!?” I looked over at Kagome and Inuyasha who where watching us. “Yeh, we have an extra guest as well” I saw inuyasha roll his eyes as he turned to the wall, I turned as well and tensed, then when I was sure that Nobunaga had a good hold pushed myself into a leap that cleared me right over the wall to land next to Inuyasha and let off my passenger. I stretched my shoulders and shook my body a little to get rid of the feeling of a person I did not know well enough riding on my back like some pack mule. “I will not have him on my back again.” Inuyasha heard my mumbling from his ears that were turned in my direction as he smirked and I just glared at him as I moved beside Kagome as we all noticed a castle guard that was fast asleep.

My ears turned every which way as I picked up snores from all directions my brow furrowing in suspicion. I moved past them all as I went towards the front door of the palace, I then looked back at Inuyasha and the others “I’m going to check some of the rooms, this does not feel right, like they are not naturally asleep.” Inuyasha looked very suspicious “Yeh, I’ll stay with Kagome, ok? Don’t take too long or I’ll have to come find ya.” I nodded my head once and ignoring Kagome leaped through the doors and inside.

I ran human speed around the hallways of wood, my ears and nose trained for anything suspicious though the snores of humans were starting to get to me. “Christ how loud can you snore, it’s hard to concentrate.” I stopped and furrowed my eyebrows as I noticed what looked like a giant toad in bandages; go in to a different part of the castle. I jumped out the door I was standing by and ran over to the wooden door my nose going ten to the dozen as I pulled open the door and went inside cautiously. I walked along the wooden floorboards looking left to right when I felt something behind me, but I was a second too late as I was hit from behind and went flying in to something sticky and soft.

Then as I moved I felt something cover me and as I gasped in surprise go down my throat and made me choke until I was breathing through the liquid. I looked up through the wall of the clear stuff and saw the same toad who was not bandaged now was looking in delight at having caught me unaware, my expression grew angered for getting caught so easily in what had to be an egg sack because I was still not fully comfortable with my abilities yet as a half-demon even as my eye lids began to fall in fatigue.

The last thing I saw was that toad in front of me who sent me in to unconsciousness after trapping me inside toad spawn egg sacks I think it was and next I was standing in the nothingness that had sent me to Inuyasha’s world in the first place. I growled as I sniffed and listened for anything that would attack me in this nothingness. I then heard a chuckle behind me “good, you are getting used to the Hanyou instincts you have gained through your transformation.” I spun round my canines bared as I faced the person who had brought me to this world.

But when I turned around my angry expression changed to one of shock as I looked upon a certain figure I had only seen an illusion of made by Sesshomaru and in a memory that I could not comprehend though all the memories were getting clearer as more pieces fitted together. It was Inuyasha’s mother who stood in front of me a small smile on her face. “You’re… You’re…” I was in shock as I blinked at her my jaw hanging open.

“I am Inuyasha’s mother as you can see.” My jaw shut with a click as I blinked, then I put an expression of irritation as I moved away and looked in the distance “I see.” She sighed (everyone does that a lot!) and moved over to me her steps echoing hollowly as she moved to my side. “I brought you to our world to help my son.” I swallowed as I watched her out the corner of my eyes as she looked out in to the nothingness her expression grim “you and I both know what will happen after the last battle has been fought.”

I walked away from her my back going stiff as my expression tightened “Yeh, I know what will happen, Kikyou dies and Kagome goes back through the well never to return to the past.” I could feel her gaze turn to me as she listened “but Shade do you know what will happen after the final battle is over and finished and Inuyasha has no one to love to hold him up?” I looked away my body growing even more tense as I did not turn around at her words. No I did not know what would happen to him though I always wandered if he ever found anyone to make him happy. Though my curiosity got the better of me.

“What happened?” I brought up a hand and looked down at it still in wonder about the changes my human body had went through to become Hanyou “Inuyasha did not give up waiting for the well to open and even though he was not there all the time or everyday he waited for the one he had called his to return to him after thinking she had just closed the well for a short time to celebrate with her family.” I watched mesmerised at the blood that dripped from my clenched fist and seemed to disappear in to nothing with strange detachment, most of my attention on what I was being told.

“It was through his waiting that aged him the same as a human as he waited for her return to him but as the years passed…” I suddenly turned around my expression pulling in to one of anger and pain my clenched fists at my side not registering pain as blood ran from my claws digging in to the palms of my hands as I snarled at her “what the fuck has this got to do with me!?” She shook her head as her expression grew agitated “I want you to change his future, his fate.” My eyebrows furrowed as I tried to think of how I would do that, then it clicked.

“You want me to give up my human life to help someone who probably hates me and wants nothing to DO WITH ME?” My lips had pulled back fully in to a snarl, she raised a hand as she took a step back as I took a step forward in her direction “If you think for one fucking minute bitch (I get really out of control when I loose my temper which is not often) that I will allow you to toy with us this way you have anou…” She cut me off as she waved her hand and it was like I was gagged and chained to a brick wall. She shook her head at me and stayed just outside the range of my claws incase I would go after her “I have connected you an Inuyasha in a way that sometimes he will react to your moods and you will react to his.”

She gave a sad smile “The bond is only new so be careful as you could both get your emotions out of control if one or the other will not calm down when you both get angry.” I snarled at her as best as I could as she looked away into the nothingness “I am not giving you much of a choice at the moment. You will stay for quite a while and I will allow you to make your choices later on.” She gave another sigh and looked at me with sad eyes as I just kept on growling in anger “enjoy yourself, but remember help him.” Then she wavered as I blinked at her as though she was in water and being broken apart by the ripples.

Then I closed my eyes for a second longer than before and found myself back in the egg sack, I felt tired as though my soul was being pulled at as I looked up I blinked in surprise as I saw Inuyasha at the wooden door that he had burst open when he had come through it. I shifted and put my hands against the egg sack wall as I leaned against it as I tried to keep awake. I blinked and looked up again and was surprised to see Kagome and Nobunaga behind him ‘hmm I must be more out of it than I thought’ My attention then went to the sack I was trapped in.

I then brought up one of my hands and looked at the claws on it that were sharp and pressed them against the sack, after a bit of pressure they slid through piecing through to the outside, I then began to slide down my hand when I felt the tugging on my soul grow painful and separate from me. I looked up and gasped in surprise as girl’s souls flew in to his mouth and healed the gash on his neck. I brought my claws up and pushed both through the rip making it wider, the voices of everyone was muffled at best when the pulling on my soul disappeared. I blinked in surprise my eyes wide as the tired feeling went away slightly and gave me more energy to rip the sack open a bit more (the thing was tough, you ever tried to rip something slippery? It’s damn hard!) I had the sack open about halfway and the liquid was slowly dripping out though no one had noticed, they all had eyes on the princess.

Then the feeling came back twice as bad and I gritted my teeth as my eyes fell to half-mast as the tiredness came back upon me. I snarled as I gripped even harder and tried to open the opening more but found my strength lacking. I breathed hard in the liquid when I noticed Inuyasha had sat down right next to the sack, I gave a small grin and reached a hand out of the liquid of the sack and pushed his shoulder. I grinned then as Inuyasha jerked and stood up as he spun round with Tetsusaiga in front of him to defend or attack.

I then watched him blink and narrow his eyes until I moved my arm and hand that was outside the sack and waved at him with my wavering strength. His eyes widened as he came over and crouched beside the sack as he looked over it. I arched and eyebrow at him and moved back while opening what I had already done so he could use his sword on it. Though when the sword sliced through the sack and I came sliding out coughing and swearing under my breath as Inuyasha blinked at me in surprise.

He then gripped me under the arm and pulled me up beside him as I growled under my breath threats that would make any toad run. I then felt him chuckle as I straightened under my returning strength, I snarled at him for his chuckle “Let me go Inuyasha I have a toad to kill.” I heard him snort as he moved with me towards the door “I said I wouldn’t.” I growled at this “Well I said no such thing, and if you think I will allow that toad to kill Kagome you have another thing coming.” I wrenched my arm away from him as I ran down the hallway with Inuyasha right beside me “Why you so concerned about Kagome anyhow?” I looked at him out the corner of my eyes while my ears swirled in his direction “Well she is the first person I have truly connected beside yourself and I already see her as a sister.”

We stopped at an intersection and both of us sniffed the air for the toads scent then we ran down the hallway his scent as well as Kagome’s and another woman’s scent were gathered. “It was only a short time but I already see her as the little sister I never had, heh, we already had a fight as well.” He gave another snort as we came upon all three, I then slowed down as Inuyasha sped up and jumped over the toad “You still in their toad lord!” I brought up my hands and moved to the side while watching for my chance to attack the toad for putting me in that spawn sack. “Inuyasha!”

I then glanced over at Inuyasha who was gripping his sword tightly as he got ready to charge at the toad “Kagome, I’m sorry but mercy’s a luxury we cannot afford.” I agreed in my mind, the human side may still be alive but would you want to live possessed by an evil creature that would kill humans that you treasured and loved? I would not so I did not think this human would either ‘god I’m thinking like a demon when I am human inside’ so I thought it would be a mercy for this person to not live through that.

I brought my hands up to face level with my claws ready, I would show I could take care of myself and not be weak. “luxury?” I looked at Kagome out the corner of my eye though I kept most of them on the toad. “I know! As in hairspray.” Then Inuyasha began to charge with his sword out in front of him and my attention switched back to the toad and I tensed my muscles to attack. “SIT BOY” I snapped my head to Inuyasha as he went crashing to the ground and then roaring flames struck the toad.

Then it was as though a cloud came from the body that formed the spirit of a toad, instantly I jumped forward and slashed my hand down, I dissected the toad and Inuyasha’s Wind scar came straight after and cut the spirit in to pieces. Out of the spirit the jewel fell and I caught it in my hand purifying it instantly. I looked over at Kagome and walked over as I held out my hand, she put out hers and I dropped the shard in to her hand.

“Inuyasha, Inuyasha.” I looked round to see Nobunaga coming as fast as he could towards Inuyasha while leaning on the stick he had to balance himself as he walked “Well done” A smirk grew on my face as Nobunaga grabbed Inuyasha’s arm with one hand and brought it up near his face, poor Inuyasha looked like he just wanted to be away from the guy with the way he was cringing away from him. “The lord is still safe. You drove out the toad.” I huffed at this ‘Didn’t all three of us drive it out?’ “You worried me for a bit, but you came through.” Inuyasha still looked horrified and Kagome was too worried about the princess to be bothered. I sighed and my shoulders sunk in exasperation as I sighed and moved over to Inuyasha “Actually I uh.” I came up beside him, while Kagome came up behind him “It’s kinder to let him believe it” I nodded my head to this “yeh”.

“Nobunaga?” I turned to look at the princess as she called out “Princess Suyu” I shook my head as I brought a hand p to ward off a headache, that liquid I had been in had made me exhausted “Nobunaga!” Then she began to run our way “Princess Suyu!” I blinked as she took the other in to her hands ‘ah so he is the one from the history books the brother that is not liked by the other.’ “You saved my husband thank you” I yawned my eyes going half-mast “you alright Shade?” I looked over at Kagome’s concerned expression, I shrugged my shoulders not wanting to answer that question. “huh, she was caught in the egg sacks like a human, shows how weak she is.”

My eyes had closed at his first word and when he had finished my fists were clenched and I was grinding my teeth “Inuyasha, give it a rest, I am tired and not in the mood.” Inuyasha snorted as he gave me a haughty look “feh, if you were not so weak you wouldn’t be so tired!” My eyes opened and I looked at Inuyasha “Inuyasha…” He blinked at me “SIT” and down he went “Shade that’s not nice “LIE GIRL” I yelped as I landed on top of Inuyasha and made his breath come out in a woosh.

“What the hell was that for Kagome!” She looked down at us as we could not move from our places on the ground “Don’t take your anger out on Inuyasha Shade” I snarled up at her as I pushed my front half up “Well he should not have insulted me bitch!” Her face grew dark “LIE” and down I went again and poor Inuyasha was caught under me.

“Damn it Kagome, stop it with her on top of me!” She just humped and walked away I let my head drop on to inuyasha’s shoulder blade “can I get some sleep yet?”

:Next morning on the same hill/incline where they met Nobunaga:

I was lying across the grass with my back against the tree that Kagome’s bike was resting against, it was peaceful for once with the wind in the branches and birds singing, I was for once just resting my mind without having to worry about strange characters attacking us.

“With the toad gone, all the girls were safe, isn’t that nice?” I opened my eyes and sat up while looking over to the dejected figure that was closer to the incline than we were. “oh come on, say something Nobunaga, won’t you?” I stood up and stretched my back still slightly hurting from the two ;lies; I got last night. “eidgit, even though he practically got himself killed, he went out of his way to save the life of his only romantic rival.”

I snorted as I walked next to Inuyasha (for some reason I felt drawn to him, maybe it was because of the bond that his mother had put between us) “love will do that to you.” I looked over at Nobunaga as he sighed in sadness “Yeh that’s me alright Almari Nobunaga the worlds biggest eidgit and fool.” I snorted at this as I stretched again and scratched my neck the sun making me sleepy again. “You are an eidgit, but you also saved a lot of lives so don’t beat yourself up there are plenty others that won’t do that.” I looked down at him in surprise.

“Why Inuyasha that the nicest thing I’ve ever heard you saAYYummph.” I blinked up at the sky wandering what had happened. I then looked over at Inuyasha who looked embarrassed as he held his hand over my mouth. My eyes narrowed and I lunged at him and engaged him in wrestling giggled falling from my mouth. “Know what, that does cheer me up.” We both stopped with me on top of Inuyasha, my teeth holding on to one sleeve while I held onto the food and arm I had while Inuyasha watched him from his place on the ground, one of his hands around my legs pinning them while he had an arm in the other hand.

“ok.” Then he walked in the same direction he went before, Instantly me and Inuyasha looked at each other and then through each other away from the other. “Hey wait, look out.” I stood up while Inuyasha watched him from his place on the ground “Wouldn’t go that way if I were..” then down Nobunaga went “..you” We all went over to the incline and looked down at Nobunaga as he cringed in pain at the bottom of the incline. “Yep he’s and eidgit all right.” At Kagome’s comment I through back my head in laughter as I held my sides.
