Chapter IX: A few weeks later
Arena was very happy travelling with InuYasha and his friends. They had become her family. They formed a tightly knit simbiotic relationship, she healed them and they protected her. It worked out well for both sides. However, she could not stop her mind from drifting back to that mysterious demon Sesshomaru. He was a puzzle to her, an intriguing one at that. First of all, she thought him to be the most handsome man she has ever seen. He was a combination of elegance and power. He also seemed like such a cold and heartless creature. Yet, how could he induce adoreable little Rin to be so loyal and loving towards him. There must be something more to that cold exterior. Arena liked to go walking by herself and deliberate on the 'Sesshomaru Mystery'. She had to admit she liked a challenge. Even in her own time she was always drawn to mysteries. First she started her professional career working with children with complex special needs, then she became fascinated with ancient mysteries, and finally because of her expertise in ancient wonders of the world she was recruited by INTERPOL to aid the investigations of a serial killer who decided to leave clues in ancient Greek and Linear B. But that was all in the past, or more accurately, the future. Arena stood on a rock overlooking a valley and sighed as she thought about her former life.
“Is something wrong?” Kagome appeared from the path.
“Oh, I was just thinking about where I come from…” Arena answered.
“You miss your home?”
“Yes…and no at the same time, you have all been so wonderful to me. I feel like I am home.”
“I know exactly how you feel Arena, I am from a very different place, yet, I was meant to be here. Although I have had a horrible craving for ice cream, oh how I loved chocolate chip cookie dough..” Kagome stopped when she realized she was speaking out loud…. “uh…sorry, I was blithering again.”
“Oh it’s okay Kagome, I am longing after Neapolitan pizza, oh how I loved the thin crust, real basil, and real buffalo mozzarella. I am quite fond of Naples myself. There is a fantastic pizzeria in Herculaneum that I would travel all the way from London just to go to…” Arena looked confused for a second, she almost forgot where she was and who she was speaking to.
“Wait a second Arena, are you from the future as well?” Kagome asked.
“I think so, although I am afraid I cannot remember everything about what happened to me.”
“This is getting freaky, I wonder what brought you back to feudal Japan! What year were you born? Where did you live before you found yourself here?”
“I don’t remember, just now I mentioned living in London, but I said that before thinking. I don’t actually remember living in London, I think I used to study there, I’m not sure…In fact, I think I used to study in Rome, Bombay and Sydney as well… I don’t know, something very odd has happened to me I think and it scares me... However, I do remember some events from the future, such as great natural disasters, and I can remember celebrating the year 2000.” Arena obviously looked upset about the prospect of the lost time.
“Err….How about we go back and see what trouble InuYasha has gotten into and how many times Miroku has been slapped by Sango?” Kagome’s suggestion brightened up Arena immediately. The thought of Miroku’s face with at least two handprints on it was enough to bring a laugh. The two went back to the camp all thoughts of the past forgotten.
They had not taken five steps when Kagome stopped.
“What is it, Kagome?” Arena asked.
“I sense something… I don’t even know what it was, but some strange force is nearby.” Kagome turned back, her eyebrows narrowed. The shouts of InuYasha and Miroku could be heard as they came running to where Arena and Kagome were standing. Of course the slayer, the monk and the half demon felt the same power as much as Kagome did. As Arena looked back at her friend she noticed something falling from the sky.
She quickly jumped towards the girl and pushed her out of the way before a large white stone could hit her.
As soon as they hit the ground InuYasha was at Kagome’s side.
“Are you alright Kagome?”
“Yes, InuYasha, do not worry about me. Thankfully Arena had her eyes open.”
As Kagome stood up she noticed for the first time what had missed her head.
“What in the heavens is that?” Miroku mused.
“It looks like a big white rock, but it seems to have some sort of decoration on it. Did it maybe come from a castle?” Sango speculated.
“I bet it is Naraku” InuYasha immediately started growling and started looking around for any sign of their great enemy.
Arena slowly got up and walked over to see what had her friends so confused.
“What the…” she looked very confused.
“What has you so disturbed Arena, do you know what this is?” Miroku asked her.
“yes, I know precisely what this is. And believe me, the more important question is how it got here.” Arena looked at Kagome “I guess you also recognize this?”
“Well, sort of, although I am not sure what these strange markings are here.”
Arena looked at the incisions created in the pearly white marble under a stylized top. She squinted as she tried to make out what they could be. Her eyes widened as she suddenly understood.
“Oh my, this is something I did not excpect to see here. This is an inscription from the person who cut this column from the marble,” before she could continue she was interrupted.
“A columnum? what the hell is that?” InuYasha grunted, obviously not pleased that he could not solve the problem with his claws or a sword.
“I was just about to get to that InuYasha,” but Arena smiled at InuYasha as she was used to his habits by now, “a column was a stylized pillar that held up a great building in the ancient western world. They were quite popular long before this time, probably about 2000 years! However, this is only the top part of the column, it would have originally have been much longer.”
“But could this columnum be 2000 years old, Arena?” Sango asked.
“I’m not sure, it looks like it is in such good condition. Yet this column, which is one of the Corinthian order, was popular in the Roman Empire, on the other side of the world!”
“What about the markings, you said you knew what they meant?” asked InuYasha.
“Hmmm, just give me a minute…” Arena stared closely at the base where the architect signed his work. It said this:
M. VENTRICIUS P. F. MEMORIAE DIVI AUGUSTI CAESARIS P. P. IMP. III COS XII FECIT.
“Okay… I think I have it. It is an inscription that says Marcus Ventricius, son of Publius, made this for the memory of the divine Augustus Caesar, and then it lists all of Caesar’s titles,” Arena looked deep in thought.
“Titles? So this fellow was a lord?” InuYasha asked.
“One of the greatest the world has ever seen. Which makes this column over 1500 years old, but it is in such impeccable condition… Anwyay, I am sure you don’t want a history lesson. We should find some cover in case more debris comes.”
“Arena has a good point everyone, let us find some shelter and then perhaps we can discuss theories regarding how this columnum came halfway across the world” Miroku suggested.
Less than half an hour later the group found themselves surrounding a roaring fire underneath a limestone overhang. Night had fallen and they had to be particularly on their guard in case any more ‘columnums’ fell from the sky. It was a perfect place to keep watch. Any incoming shells would be visible by the light of the moon and would give them ample time to escape from the overhang should it be headed for the rock face. Naturally such a well fortified position would be sought by others.
