~~~ Chapter 9~~~
Kagome and Inuyasha hit the bottom of the well with a harsh thud. There was no pink light, no tunnel home, just a deep, dark, stinky and wet well. Kagome was devastated, and Inuyasha was highly disappointed he couldn’t get her home. She wouldn’t even be able to go home one last time, one way; she had no choice but to stay.
He hung his head in disappointment, “I am so sorry Kagome. I thought for sure this would work, but me going through the well must have had a connection to the jewel too.”
She stared off blankly, no response, and then all of a sudden cried out in agony. “No! This can’t be!” She began to sob heavily and frantically began to dig at the bottom of the well, determined to somehow get home.
Inuyasha could smell her blood mixed with the dirt. She was digging so hard her hands were bleeding, and he quickly was by her side grabbing her bloodied hands from the dirt. He picked her up and held her close. “Shh… please don’t cry,” he pleaded. “There has to be a way to get you home. I know we’ll find it. Your powers are awfully strong for a miko. I have never seen a miko with the ability to transport her self like you do. Maybe if you were to learn how to use your powers better… Maybe Kikyo can help you learn how to use your powers so you can go home.”
Her sobs began to subside and she wiped away the remaining tears as she stood up. “You know, you actually have a point. To Kikyo then.” She grabbed Inuyasha’s hand and in an instant they were back in the village in front of Kikyo’s hut.
“How do you know she is here?” Inuyasha asked curiously.
Kagome smiled, “I don’t. I just thought of going to Kikyo and I guess this is where I took us. I know about as much as you do.”
Kikyo slowly emerged upon sensing their sudden presence. “Good morning,” she said as she emerged, eying them suspiciously, not quite understanding why she had just now sensed their arrival. “What is your purpose with me?”
Kagome spoke out first, panic still thick in her voice. “I need to go home!” she blurted out. She calmed herself down and started over again. “I think I could use my miko powers to take me back home, problem is I have no idea how to use them. I have come to notice they are very much dependent on my emotions as of now. Help me, please,” she pleaded.
She looked her reincarnation up and down and then did the same to Inuyasha. ‘He is protecting her too much. If this is going to work she will need to rely on herself, not him. He is going to have to leave her with me. This will be the most efficient, effective, and quickest way of doing this.’ “Inuyasha leave. You are of no use here.” She looked his way again, sensing his worry. “Don’t worry Inuyasha, she will be safe. You are just a distraction is all.”
Inuyasha nodded in agreement, squeezed Kagome’s hand in goodbye, and walked off. “Don’t’ leave without me.” He commanded as he walked off. Kagome just smiled. She would never dream of it.
As soon as he was out of sight and earshot Kikyo began the lesson. “Come, Kagome, we shall begin your training as a priestess. I hope you are a quick learner, because I had to learn this as a child.” Once inside she began the questions, she motioned for Kagome to have a seat. “I have a few questions first if that is alright.”
Kagome sat down and nodded her head. “Go ahead, I will answer them to the best of my knowledge.”
“Do you have any powers that you can control yet?”
“Only the purifying touch and arrow thing.”
“What powers do you think you have?”
“I know I have some kind of barrier capabilities. I somehow turned Naraku to stone. And somehow I can transport myself to anywhere in a matter of seconds. I also have this purity blast attack thingy that I found out I had when Inuyasha pissed me off.”
Kikyo sat back almost shocked at what she had said. “You can transport yourself?”
“Yes, but I don’t know how I do it.”
“When do all of these things occur?”
“When… um… when I am all emotional usually. I think that my emotions have a lot to do with it.” A blush stained her cheeks at her admittance of ignorance.
The conversation went on for another hour before they even got to the training part. For the rest of the day Kagome trained with Kikyo on how to use her powers.
By nightfall they were finished and Kagome was satisfied that she could get herself home. “Thank you so much Kikyo. I really appreciate all that you have taught me today. If you do not mind I would like to train with you weekly.”
Kikyo smiled, “That is not a problem, I was just about to suggest it myself. Although it can wait till you get back. I will see you when you get back then?”
“Yes, most definitely, I am looking forward to it.” With a wave goodbye she disappeared into the night, off to find Inuyasha before she left.
Inuyasha was sitting by the hot spring holding the clear jewel in his hands. “All this trouble, just because of one little piece of glass.” He tossed it into the spring, “Good ridden to you and your power.”
He sat there in silence until Kagome crossed his mind for the fiftieth time. He had begun to worry that maybe she had left him there, for the night sky had already crept up on him as he sat there thinking of her. He jumped up in frustration, “Oh will you hurry up!” he screamed at the top of his lungs.
He tried to take a breath in, but couldn’t. She was coming to form right before his eyes, right in front of him. She was smiling and the pink light, which faded as soon as she was fully there, enveloped her. “Glad to see me?” she asked meekly.
Inuyasha thru his arms around her tiny waist and brought her to his lips, kissing her. “Of course I am glad to see you! Glad to see you didn’t leave me too!” He laughed as she made a face to the last comment.
“I would never leave you baka,” she retorted with a slight smirk. “Speaking of leaving, can I go home now?”
“Only if you tell me how.” He toyed with her.
“Well, me and Kikyo figured out that I have one more power than she does or did have. My soul must have learned it along its travels. I can somehow manipulate time. I can have time completely not affect me and speed it up for someone else. Or, like in Naraku’s case, can stop one person’s clock completely. When I disappear, my body is taking me to the time and place I want to be. So I should be able to make it home.” She held her hand out to him as she started to walk. “So, are you coming or not?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Inuyasha said grasping her hand. He smiled and then added, “Plus, who would protect you if I didn’t go? Those powers of yours can’t possibly be enough.”
“I’m sure they could make you ‘sit’ down and shut up.” She laughed hysterically as Inuyasha fell, out of habit. “You know it’s not around your neck anymore! You don’t have to fall down.”
Inuyasha wiped his clothes off and growled. “Can we just go?”
“Alright, hold on tight, here we go.” As she said go, they were both enveloped by a pink light and disappeared into the night.
Before she knew it she was standing in her own house back in her own time. Kagome squealed in excitement. “Come on!” She pulled Inuyasha towards the kitchen yelling, “I’m home everybody!”
Her mother came out of the kitchen, happy to see her daughter home. “Welcome home dear.” She smiled at Inuyasha, glad to see him, but taking note of her daughter’s hand connected to his and the red mark on her neck. “It is good to see you too Inuyasha! You are both in luck; I have just made breakfast. And if you hurry Kagome, you can still make it to school.”
Kagome nodded and ran off to the kitchen to get something to eat, leaving Inuyasha behind. He tried to get her attention one last time, but it didn’t work. ‘But why are we here in the morning? I could have sworn we would get here at night. She is going to leave me here all day?’ “What am I supposed to do all day!” He got no response.
Mrs. Higurashi smiled as her daughter ran off to eat with everyone else and turned to Inuyasha. “You are more than welcome to stay, as always, and you can come and go as you please.” She walked into the kitchen and bid her farewells and then was off to work.
Inuyasha walked into the kitchen to join Kagome and was greeted by Souta. “Hey Inuyasha! So are you going to stay here while Kagome goes to school?”
Inuyasha pouted, “If she really plans on going to school today.” He turned to Kagome, “You really aren’t going to leave me here all by myself today, are you?”
She looked at him sweetly as she finished up her breakfast. “Yes, I am almost finished with my senior year and still doing pretty well. If I stick to it, I could still make high honors. As a matter of fact, if you don’t mind, I think I should stay here and finish school. It is only three months.”
Souta put his two cents in where they weren’t asked. “Why should he care if you go to school or not?”
“This is none of your business Souta! Go get ready for school!” Kagome screamed at her little brother for butting in, but boy did it make her happy.
She got up from the table, grabbing her book bag, and headed off to her room, motioning for Inuyasha to follow. Once in the room she began rummaging through her closet, looking for something, then she finally found it. “Ah ha! This is it,” she said as she pulled out a bag from inside the messy closet.
“What is it?” he asked curiously.
She smiled and thought of a good way to put it. “These are clothes that I bought for you in case you ever came back to the present. So you wouldn’t stand out so much.” She handed the bag to him. “There is a hat to cover your ears, some shoes that should be the right size, and a couple sets of clothes.” She grinned ear to ear, “It is up to you if you choose to wear the underwear, I think they will be too small.”
“So you really are going to leave me here?” he was pouting again.
“Oh stop your pouting, I will be home in no time. Go see the sights… dressed in the clothes I bought you. I love you, gotta go, bye.” She kissed him softly, smiled and made her way to school.
