Modern Love

Sesshoumaru scowled down at the sleeping man next to him. He was angry, very angry. The loophole in Krista's mother's will was only a minor one, but somehow that grandmother had been able to wriggle through it. He had to prove otherwise. InuYasha had no clue as to why the whole situation angered him. Nearly twenty years had passed, during one of the times they were not together, Sesshoumaru had fathered a son.

Krista looked so much like her father, it nearly killed Sesshoumaru to know of what had happened. There was so much he needed to tell Krista and InuYasha. Inu had accepted the son, as the mother had died during childbirth. It was InuYasha's idea to name the son Miroku after a long passed friend.

Miroku was Krista's father, that much was explained in the will. Long ago, Sesshoumaru had given him up for adoption, as he looked like his mother. Sesshoumaru gazed out the window, at the moonless sky. InuYasha's locks had indeed darkened, but now he could sleep peacefully. He allowed a sigh to escape, one that woke the younger man.

"You're still awake? You're thinking of him?" InuYasha accurately assessed the situation.

"Yes, I can't lie about that. Did you know he was Krista's father? I was reading the paperwork. Miroku was adopted by that couple.. as his name was the same as the.." Sesshoumaru turned his gaze to look into the deep violet eyes.

"That was a descendant of Miroku that adopted the child. It was the perfect cover, too. He signed the adoption papers as the child's natural father. Who could have blamed him anyway. The baby looked like him."

"The loophole that she used was that Miroku was not related to us. He was my son, and he knew it. Half that trust fund was from him. He died in that car-wreck in Kyoto. That was just days after Krista's birth."

"So.. rightfully, Krista's OUR grandchild."

"That is correct. They can't get his DNA, but they can use mine! Elizabeth knew this when she singled us out. We'd applied for adoption, but now given our current state.. it was no longer necessary for us to adopt. I agreed to adopt Krista given anything happen to her. I even gave Elizabeth money to get here on." Sesshoumaru clenched a fist.

"Easy, please.. think of the babies. Don't get worked up." InuYasha tried desperately to calm Sesshoumaru.

"That trust fund was VERY rich. Elizabeth had put two loopholes in her will, knowing her mom would find ways to weasel through them. One was if Krista was to be adopted by a non reletive, then her mother got half the money. Half a million dollars..."

InuYasha suddenly had a thought. He'd heard about the wreck that claimed his nephew's life. Rumors had it there was money involved in taking his life. It would have taken the last bit of support Elizabeth had in keeping Krista.

"How did the grandmother know.."

"She doesn't. She thinks that Miroku's parents were his birth. She doesn't know that I was his father. Elizabeth did, and she stated in her will that if anything happend to her, Krista would be placed in the custody of her Paternal Grandpa. That being me, the grandmother can do nothing. She'll be out all that money, when it comes down that Krista was indeed adopted by a blood relative."

"That now brings us to how to tell her about the kids." InuYasha stated simply.

"That and the fact that I am her Grandfather." Sesshouomaru smiled softly and settled into a more comfortable position and closed his eyes. "Maybe I should try to sleep, you should as well. You've been working alot of shifts here the past week."

"I know, I've been so wrapped up in Krista's case that I have agreed to take on more shifts. Though I've also covered a few others off my ward. Don't worry, I'm off for the next four days." InuYasha yawned and dozed off.


- Three Days Later -

InuYasha stared across the room at the woman who sat beside their daughter, Shiori. Shiori was a lawyer, specializing in Family Law. InuYasha quickly took his seat next to Sesshoumaru who was sitting on Shiori's other side.

As they all rose from their seats, a judge stepped into the room, taking his seat. InuYasha held his breath as the judge settled his notes. He looked over his notes at those sitting before him.

"I have before me the case of Taisho vs Stephenson, I have all parties before me. There is one issue that must be brought forth is due to the will of Elizabeth Stephenson. All parties here have been at the reading of the will, so I will not go into further details, save for one clause. Krista Stephenson was to be adopted by InuYasha and Sesshoumaru Taisho if anything had happened to her. Calgary Stephenson, I have before me a DNA test of Krista's father Miroku Thomas, as well as that of Sesshoumaru Taisho. It is the understanding that if Krista was to be adopted by a non relative, you were to recieve her trust fund."

At this moment, the woman sitting to Shiori's left stood.

"Your Honor, she has been adopted by these two gentlemen. She's of no relation to them..." The loud banging of a gavel interrupted her.

"BE SEATED! You will have your chance to speak. The fact that these men are of no relation to you is not relevant. This hearing is of their relation to HER. As I said, I have the DNA tests of her father, and of the man she left custody to. I have reviewed the resaults. My finding is that you return the trust fund to it's original account, fully intact. Krista was left to the custody of her paternal Grandfather."

The woman closed her mouth with a snap and sat down. She looked at the judge with a meek look. He nodded to her and she stood again.

"I was under the impression that she was adopted by a non-relative, as her father..wait.. This man here is her Grandfather?"
