Tactics and Swords

Disclaimer: I do not, nor will I ever, own Inuyasha

“Good Yasuo, Kaori, keep your arms a bit higher, I had a clear shot.” Sango called out. “Drop those fists again and I’ll strike. You need to see what you’re doing wrong.”

Kaori growled low in her throat before mutely nodding and drawing her fists tighter to her body. With that she and her brother charged forward once again trying to land a blow on the human before them. Yet, Sango, miraculously it seemed, dodged every punch they threw at her. As Kaori surged forwards for the umpteenth time Yasuo held back. They were getting nowhere by just rushing in blindly. At this rate they would be too worn out to continue whereas Sango would still be rearing to go.

As Sango soared through the air she couldn’t help but notice that there was only one indignant fluff attacking her. She looked about only to spot Yasuo contemplating something off in the distance. She sent a rock speeding towards the ground near his feet; if he kept standing there his foe could easily attack him. She was, needless to say, more than slightly surprised when he dodged the rock with ease. He looked up at her, a smirk played about his features before he set off running.

‘Kaori.’ Yasuo thought desperately ‘Kaori listen to me. Keep fighting her full force; I’m going to attack her from behind. Whatever happens, don’t let her see me. Keep all her attention on you.’

‘Right’ was her quick responds.

Telepathy was a technique the two discovered years ago. As long as they could remember they had been able to communicate with one another without having to worry about intruding ears. A nifty little secret they had decided to keep to themselves.

Wave after wave of attacks were thrown at Sango, each more fierce than the last. Then, she felt it. A strong blow to the back, she turned to find Yasuo behind her. The two hanyous wore cocky grins as they watched her bewildered expression. She was left to wonder how the two had coordinated the attack as they raced speedily back home for lunch.

When the twins reached the hut they were shocked to find that Inuyasha was not eating, or, for that matter, anywhere to be found. Kagome cheerfully handed the two steaming bowls of Ramen, and then, as if sensing their confusion, answered their unasked question.

“Inuyasha left this morning, he should be back this evening. I thought we could work on your archery after lunch.”

“Alright” they answered in unison. Thought their words were simple, their thoughts were anything but that.

‘Where do ya think he went?’ Kaori asked, not bothering to look up from her food.

‘Who knows’ Yasuo thought back ‘but he better be here before nightfall.’

‘Why?’

‘Because,’ Yasuo began, sounding a bit impatient ‘tonight is the night of the new moon. If he’s like us he should be a human.’

‘Oh…I wonder where he went’

Yasuo sighed openly, earning himself a few strange looks from the human adults around him. Shippo, however, didn’t even glance at the hanyou. Strange as it was, he had a pretty good idea of what was going on between his adopted kin. He knew that they could communicate without words or gestures; he just wasn’t sure how they were doing it. That was not the only thing Shippo knew. Though his physical appearance was young, he was actually quite advanced. He always knew exactly what those around him were saying, though he didn’t let on that he did. If they knew he understood what was going on all the time they would surly not speak so openly in front of him.

That was something that Shippo did not want to risk. He liked to be informed; he wanted revenge just as much as the others. He wanted to be there when they killed Naraku. The bastard had stolen just as much from him after all. As much as he loved Kagome and the others, they could never replace his father. He missed him so very much. Naraku would pay for what he had done.

As the twins grabbed their bows and arrows Shippo grabbed the wooden sword he had painstakingly carved off the far wall. Yasuo watched the older demon follow Sango onto the sparing grounds as he and his sister were led to the makeshift archery range. An hour later Yasuo found himself more than slightly flustered as Kaori hit the target dead center whereas his arrow sailed wobbly to the left of the target and buried itself into the ground.

“Here,” Kagome offered gently moving behind him and correcting his stance “Now, steady the arrow, very good. Keep that elbow up, higher, perfect. Now, aim and pull back as far as you can.”

His effort was rewarded with an arrow buried just to the right of the center of its destination. Over and over he shot and retrieved his arrows. By the end of the day he and Kaori were decent archers. Kagome giggled as Kaori sat perched on her back chattering about how fun archery was. Yasuo shyly held her hand as they made their way up the steep hill back home.

The twins shuddered as they watched the blood red sun sink below the horizon. A gentle tingle started at the top of Kaori’s head and slowly dripped down, a sensation not unlike having an egg cracked onto one’s head. The tingling grew steadily stronger as it moved down her body. By the time it reached her toes it felt as though she was being stabbed by a series of tiny needles. She clenched her fists as the discomfort faded into what can only be described as darkness.

Kaori didn’t know how humans could stand it. Not being able to hear or smell approaching danger. Not being able to smell comfort, kindness, love…not being able to smell her mother. Panic gripped her heart as that familiar scent vanished, only to be replaced by dull nothingness. It was silly, she knew her mother was there…but she no longer had proof.

After being around a surly hanyou for so long, you pick up warning signs. As soon as she felt both Kaori and Yasuo tense Kagome picked up the pace. They were obviously not comfortable being outside when they were like this, and she couldn’t blame them. She was practically running by the time they got back to the hut. She burst through the door painting heavily from her up-hill run.

She smiled when she spotted Inuyasha across the fire, a not so unusual scowl played about his handsome features. He hated being human, and it showed. He acknowledged his fellow demon-turned-human brethren with a slight nod of the head. The tiny hanyous plopped down on either side of Inuyasha and gratefully accepted a bowl of Ramen from their mother.

By the time they finished Miroku emerged from the ever growing darkness. He wiped the dust from his hands as he sat down. He wasted no time in devouring the bowl that was placed before him.

“Where ya been Miroku?” Inuyasha asked in what could be interpreted as either a taunt or an honest question. Miroku decided to assume it was the latter of the two.

“I was erecting a barrier to protect us tonight.” He gulped as he caught the dirt look shot his way by Inuyasha. “It’s not that I have any doubt about any of our abilities, it’s just that I believe it would be best to avoid trouble tonight.”

Inuyasha merely shrugged. The monk was right, though he would never admit it. The last thing any of them needed was a demon to attack when there were not only weak, but in an area with children and jewel shards. The situation just screamed trouble. Demons were crafty; they knew that children were a weak spot among almost all humans. There couldn’t be a more perfect opportunity to obtain jewel shards.

When Inuyasha finally snapped out of his daze he found an entirely different atmosphere. The room had gone from dull and depressing to lively and cheerful. Miroku was playing a strategic game with Yasuo, and by the looks of it, the runt wasn’t doing half bad. Kaori was looking over her brother’s shoulder, a look of frustration adorned upon her face. Kagome and Rin were giggling over a joke as they dished up two more bowls for Shippo and Sango. Speaking of which, the two were coming in the door. Shippo had a look of smug triumph on his face and Sango was smiling prettily as she congratulated Shippo on what must have been a successful lesson.

It was then that he decided to present his gifts. He cleared his throat, effectively gaining the attention of the entire room. Having all eyes suddenly transfixed on him was slightly unnerving, but he continued on anyway.

“Here.” He said rather gruffly as he pulled three lengthy objects out from behind him. He had meant to congratulate them or something of the sort, but this worked too. He quickly handed Shippo, Kaori, and Yasuo a sword. “Totosai made them.” He said quietly “You need them, they’ll be a big help later.”

All three children were in a state of awe as they held their swords. They truly were finely crafted.

“You’ll begin your training with them tomorrow.” Inuyasha began once again “put them away for now, you can admire them later.”

Kagome smiled warmly. He had gone out of his way to have swords made for his niece and nephew. He was so different now. When she first met him he had been a stubborn ass who refused to even refer to her by her name, he was still stubborn as ever, but he was also very kind-hearted now. Not only she, but the rest of them, they had all melted his cold exterior.

As the children began to settle for the night Miroku decided to go out and check the barrier. He was being extremely cautious lately; he wasn’t going to risk their lives. As he made his way out the door he was pleasantly surprised to find that Sango was right behind him.

“Mind if I join you?” she asked quietly

“Not in the least.” He replied. And with that the two began to walk the perimeter of the protected area. The night about them was calm. A warm breeze rustled their hair teasingly before sweeping across the rest of the land. When they were certain that nothing was getting in they settled on the grassy hill to the left of the hut.

There were a few minutes of awed silence as they gazed longingly at the stars above. Sango shifted about as she felt Miroku’s gaze pierce her skin. She turned to face him only to find that he was giving her the same look that she had just been giving the stars. The type of look that one can only give to a celestial beauty.

“M-M-Mir….” Before she could even finish his name he cut her off with a searing kiss. He hadn’t meant for it to happen, but he just couldn’t contain himself. In the moonlight she looked even more like a goddess.

He gently cupped her face as she began to respond to the kiss. He mentally crossed his fingers. He was surprised she had let him get away with this much, but how would she react to what he was about to do? Ever so gently he slid his tongue across her lips, silently begging for entry. He was even more surprised when she granted his wish. As he ravished her mouth he slowly began to trail his hands down her back, pulling her closer to him.

When he pulled away Sango looked as though she was floating out of a dream. She absolutely glowed until a look of nervousness overtook her features.

“Ummm…M-Miroku…?”

Miroku winced, this couldn’t be good.

“Yes my dear Sango?”

“I feel so stupid asking this, but, what do I do with my hands?” She asked blushing furiously. Relief washed over Miroku, she wasn’t mad, she was just inexperienced. He smiled as he guided her hands to cup his own face. He then proceeded to place his hands on her hips once more and drew her in for another mind boggling kiss. Before long Sango had moved her hands to play with his silky hair.

“You learn fast.” He chuckled as he pulled away.

Sango blushed prettily once again before pulling herself to her feet.

“Come on.” She said as she offered him a hand “They’re waiting for us.”

With that the two made their way inside, smiling happily as they settled for bed. Kagome and Rin giggled knowingly at the blushing pair, as Inuyasha just looked on perplexed.

As the evening wore on to early morning Inuyasha sat awake as those around him slept. He smiled as Kagome drifted in and out of wakefulness. She ended up falling fast asleep with her head on his shoulder. He looked down and found Yasuo asleep in his lap cuddled deep in the folds of his shirt. As Inuyasha looked about his friends he realized this was happiness. This was home.

His allies, no, they were more than that, his friends, were always there for him. They cared for him when he thought that no one else would. They protected him, even when he was too stubborn to admit that he needed it, and they stayed with him, even when he himself would have left long ago. These people cared for him, and he would always protect them, just as they did for him.

He sighed as the sun lazily inched its way into the sky. Warmth seeped into his veins and the numbness that had surrounded him slowly dissipated. His senses once again heightened. Thump thump, thump thump. The steady heart beats were music to his ears. They were safe, he knew now, they were safe. He could put his mind at ease. As soon as Kagome’s scent reached his nose he fell into a deep slumber.

‘Embrace the sleep with open arms and set your mind to rest’ Kagome thought as she felt him relax and slip into the realm of dreams.

I feel I must apologize. Not only did it take for fucking ever to get you this chapter, it’s short as hell. I’m so sorry! *bows* PLEASE FORGIVE ME….and please please please don’t track me down and kill me with a butter knife! Don’t worry, I’m going to start writing chapters more often, like I used to! GIVE ME A BREAK! I just started driving, of course I wanted to enjoy my freedom for a while, can you blame me? Then there was a nasty…er…run in with someone I hate. He’s an asshole! Riiiiiiiiight…you know what I found? I WAS ON A RECOMMENDED READING LIST ON SOMEONE’S PROFILE! I was so excited, you have no idea! As you can see I started a Miroku Sango thing. I figured it’s been freaking ages since you all had a lemon…so, I’ll work towards that….and I just really like Sango/Miroku pairings…it makes me happy.

My Patient Readers

LordFluffysMate – I agree…it does work with like every freaking hottie! Lucky dog! Hehehe anywho, I’m so glad you liked this chapter, it really means a lot to me that you keep reading this, I’m not kidding, thank you!

Altari- *jumps in the air with you* That review made me so happy! Just the fact that you were honestly THAT excited about reading it! Teehee, I feel special!

Hiro- I laughed so hard when I read that I literally started crying. Yes, it’s so very true; parents really are quite cruel aren’t they? But what really made that funny was her mom had told me it would work! Don’t worry, I learned my lesson. Getting hair dye tomorrow actually. Dying the tips green…HOOORAY!

Dimepieceleo- I’m glad you like it. About the whole jumping thing…mainly it’s due to a lack of creative ideas and poor writing style. I thought the same damn thing while I was writing it, but I couldn’t think of anything else to do. Not unless I wanted to like take for freaking ever on their early childhood, which isn’t really what I wanted to do. I wanted to get things rolling because I meant for this story to be done after like 8 chapters, but that isn’t going to happen. I have so many ideas now, and it will stop year jumping, I promise. I just needed to get them to the right age, ya know? As for the whole he should be able to find them thing…yeah…I know. But the challenge doesn’t want him to until they are older…soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo….just working with what I got.

Vanessa- OHHHHHH! Could you please E-mail them to me when you’re done? PRETTY PLEASE! *Gets on knees and begins to beg.* I think the ponytail idea is great, not even kidding! Now I have an idea on how to describe them when the time comes! HOORAY! *gives you BIG bear hug*

NewFan- I will defiantly keep that suggestion in mind! I have an idea similar to it…but I don’t know which I’ll use yet! Danka Sehr! German for thank you very much. I love this challenge, thank you so much for making it!

Animegirl007- Rin is now in her 20’s. I believe 24 to be exact. All I have to say is…no matter how odd it seems don’t worry about age…I HAVE AN IDEA! MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I don’t know why my idea deserved an evil laugh, but apparently it did….HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ren- Your comments bring a smile to my face every time I read them! Indeed sisters are a blessing…and evil evil fucked up blessing. And I sympathize; I know what it’s like to have your computer erase important things…it sucks. Huzah for winning the battle of the computers. Coffee can’t hurt me…coffee is my friend. Coffee makes me happy…DON’T TAKE AWAY MY HAPPINESS! Sorry…I’ve been strait for about a week now…noooo coffee whatsoever. IT SUCKS *starts bawling*. Awww…I’m so flattered by your reviews….I feel so talented! Oh, and tell your sister that I’m not corrupting you any more than you already are hahahahaha!

REadER- Don’t worry…Life for Sesshoumaru gets better….no really….I promise.

Altari (2) – Wow….you learn something new every day. I’ve always wondered what the hell that was…I guess it’s one of life’s mysteries…*strikes ponderous pose*.

Cassie- Don’t worry…things will work out. I like happy endings, but ya know, if it was over….well…that’s just it…it would be over. It would be no more. I would have to start a new story. So…let us not rush these things! Teehee! Plot is a good thing! Thank you for the review!

Frimm- I laughed so hard when I read that review…I thought I was going to die. Thank you for the Cheetos by the by. Now….to answer your question thingies. 1. I know he should have found her by now…but as I said before, the challenge wanted him to find them later, so later they shall be found. And I had just thought about the whole ‘follow Inuyasha’ thing right before I read your comment…but then I figured, eh, too late to change it now. 2. Once again, she had to leave to develop the plot…create conflict…all that. If he just came back with no mate and they lived happily ever after…well…that just wouldn’t be much fun now would it. I mean it would be nice and all…but kind of a dull read in my opinion. I would see that and be like ‘what the fuck? That’s it? Game over? The end? What the fuck is this?’ 3. …….*shifty eyes* yyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssss………maybe kinda….HE WAS IN A FIT OF RAW MALE PASSION, WHAT ELSE WAS HE GOING TO DO? Teehee. 4. I am so full of confusiosity…but that’s alright! And your constant flattery did make me feel quite guilty…it is why I wrote this chapter tonight actually. I reread all my reviews and I thought to myself ‘Self, HOLY SHIT! YOU HAVE TO WRITE OR ELSE SHE IS GOING TO HUNT YOU DOWN AND KILL YOU AND USE YOUR SKIN AS A CREEPY COAT TO KEEP WARM!’ I get a bit dramatic at times….yeah…

Chew- Awwww….I feel bad, you always check for me. I’m sorry it took so long to update…please accept this cake as a token of my regret.

Lady-Hoshi- Awww…that really makes me feel bad! I’m so glad you reread my story! I love your name by the way!

Frimm (2) –I AM SO SORRY! *Hands Cake* please take the cake! It’s a good cake, I swear! Please don’t kill me!

Altari (3)- I wanted to thank you for putting me on your recommended reading! That made me so very happy. I saw it and I about fainted!

Snick- I KNOW….EMBRACE THE END!! !!!!!!!!!!! er…I mean…here is another chapter for your viewing pleasure…yyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh…
