Chapter 9 Mom's Home Early

‘I don’t want to open my eyes. Kami my head hurts... Oh kuso!’ Recollection entered her mind and Kagome’s eyes shot open. She dared not move for fear that she may startle Inuyasha, and she certainly didn’t want that.

It was daylight already. Her pink bedroom was bright from the light pouring in the broken window. Kagome slowly moved her head to see if Inuyasha was still in her room. Much to her relief, he was gone. As the relief passed it was replaced with dread. If he wasn’t here, then where could he be?

Kagome sat up slowly. She looked down at her injured leg. She needed to treat the wounds. They had stopped bleeding, and appeared to have healed some, but were still open and gaping. She leaned to her good leg and used the bed to lift herself off of the floor.

‘What was that?’ She thought. It sounded like something on the roof. She stood very still listening for the slight sound again, but heard nothing. She moved to her closet and grabbed the first thing she came to, a light blue sundress. ‘Oh well, it’ll do’, she thought miserably. Kagome used the wall to pull herself along to the bathroom across the hall. She dared not look in the mirror. She wasn’t ready to see her reflection... or face her loss. Instead she turned on the shower and slipped in.

The hot water stung like fire running across her open wounds, but she gritted her teeth and began the task of cleansing herself of the grim. Once her hair was washed she felt marginally better. She lathered her cloth and began scrubbing her body. When the cloth brushed over the mark on her neck she winced. It didn’t really hurt physically. It was the emotional wound that was left behind. Kagome remembered Sesshomaru’s words. We will be together forever... How wrong he had been. How short their time together. She began crying again, her tears mingling with the steaming drops of water running down her face.

Kagome stepped out and quickly toweled dry. She slipped the blue dress over her head and grabbed her toothbrush. She raised her eyes to the mirror. ‘Dear Kami!’ Kagome stared in shock at her eyes. They were no longer the deep brown, so like her mothers. They had changed. They were now an amber shade with flecks of gold. ‘Strange’, she thought. ‘Damn... now every time I look in the mirror I will be reminded of what I once had.’ Her heart broke just a little more. When Kagome pulled her lips back to brush the front of her teeth, she leaned closer to the mirror. Her eyes creased together a bit as she stared at her canine teeth. ‘Iie! What in the seven hells has happened to me!’ Her canines were protruded slightly and longer. ‘Mom is going to kill me!’

Kagome pulled a spray can of antiseptic down from the medicine cabinet. She held her breath, and sprayed the gashes on her thigh. It stung like nobody’s business! She fought the urge to cry out.

After putting away her toiletries and first aid items, Kagome headed for the bathroom door. On the back of the door, was a pretty white scarf. ‘This is nice, it must be moms.’ She reached to pull it off the hook, and gasped when her fingers slipped right through, making three neat cuts in the delicate cloth. ‘Oh my!’ Kagome snatched her hand back, and looked down to her nails. No longer did the tips of her fingers hold neat little rounded nails. Instead there were sharp little claws.

Sesshomaru’s blood had changed her, just like he said it would. ‘He never said I would change this much!’ Her thought’s once again lingered on her handsome demon lord. Unwelcome images of his once ethereal body lying lifeless under the thrashing tentacles of Naraku. She began sobbing uncontrollably. Her tiny frame wracked with grief. Slowly she slid down the door onto the floor, allowing herself a little time to mourn for her lost love.

Time went by. How much she had no idea, and couldn’t bring herself to care. She didn’t want to get up from the bathroom floor. She didn’t want to face the monster that she knew was prowling outside. She just wanted to stay there and die. No matter how badly she wanted this, it couldn’t happen. She had to save her family. She had to push her grief to the back of her mind and figure a way to stop Inuyasha. Slowly she dragged her pain-wracked body up, using the counter as a support. Kagome hobbled over and splashed her face with cool water.

Kagome looked around for something that she could use to fight Inuyasha. Hair dryer? No. Curling Iron? No. Finger nail file? No. ‘Oh, it’s useless’. There just wasn’t anything. She would have to rely on her relationship with the hanyou, and hope that he would not kill her.

Kagome opened the bathroom door slowly, leaning her head out to look around. No sign of him. She made her way to the stairs then inched her way down, holding tightly to the wall. With Kagura’s pin still buried in her leg, each movement sent shooting pain through her leg, but still she moved on. Once at the bottom, Kagome moved to the door. If she could make it to the well, then there was a chance that she could lure him there, and then jump in taking them both back to the feudal era.

Kagome thought her plan was working until she got about twelve meters from her back door. Suddenly she felt a presence behind her. It was him. She knew it. What to do? Run? Not likely. Ever so slowly Kagome turned to face Inuyasha. He stood behind her glaring at her with his glazed red eyes. He made for a frightening image. He was still filthy from the battle. His silver mane of hair caked with blood and gore. He had a snarl plastered on his face and a low growl resounded from deep in his chest.

Kagome was petrified, but dared not show it. She wanted to flee, but knew there was no possibility of that. He was way to fast, and with her injury she had been lucky just to hobble this far without falling. She stepped back one step. He didn’t move. She stepped back once more. He still didn’t move. She never took her eyes off of him as she stepped back a third time.

Inuyasha pounced! Kagome screamed, and from Kami knows where a flash of white passed over her head and slammed into Inuyasha with a thunderous thud.

Realization of what she was seeing swept into her mind. “SESSHOMARU!!” She screamed. ‘He’s alive! Dear Kami... he’s alive!’ Kagome had never felt such relief wash over her. She suddenly became a little dizzy and lost her balance. She hit the ground, breaking her fall with her hands. She looked back to the fighting brothers. Inuyasha and Sesshomaru were battling with claws. She could see her mate’s red coated bandages and she knew his injuries were far from healed.

Suddenly Sesshomaru snarled. His hand glowed green and he punched the crazed hanyou in the forehead. The force sent him reeling back to land with a thump on the grass. It appeared that he was out cold. Sesshomaru dropped the Tetsaiga quickly on Inuyasha’s chest, and turned to Kagome.

Never had she felt such relief and happiness. Kagome began to cry. She tried to go to him, but was having trouble standing. Soon she felt him wrap his arms around her, holding her tight, gently rocking her, as he rubbed his hands over her hair.

“My sweet little mate. Please forgive this Sesshomaru. I should have protected you.” He whispered softly in her ear.

“You... you’re alive. You are alive. Oh thank the heaven’s above you’re alive.” Kagome repeated her words like a chant. Holding her lover to her. His long ivory hair spilling around them like a silken sheet. Then Sesshomaru fell a little, and Kagome looked down to the spreading red on his bandages. “Oh! Your wounds have reopened!” He released her then, forced to hold himself up, as his blood, once again leaked from his body.

“Kagome! What in heaven’s name is going on here?” A familiar voice called.

Kagome looked around to see her mother, grandfather and Souta standing near the backdoor. Immediately her mother ran to her side.

“Dear Kami! What has happened to you dear?” Her mother kneeled down inspecting her daughter’s leg, then she looked to Sesshomaru. “Oh! You’re not Inuyasha!” She looked to Kagome, “Who is this Kagome? He’s badly injured too!” Ms. Higurashi called out to Souta and her grandfather to come and help her get them inside.

Kagome smiled warmly at her mother. “Mom, I’d like you to meet Lord Sesshomaru. He is my husband.”

Sesshomaru looked at her curiously. The term husband was a human one. Kagome glared at him, willing him to go along with it. Her mom wouldn’t understand the term ‘mate’, so she hoped this would suffice.

Ms. Higurashi stepped back a little. “Husband? Kagome... I think you have some explaining to do. How did you get these injuries?”

Kagome looked over to where Inuyasha lay. Oh she definitely had some explaining to do. Kagome decided quickly not to tell her mom that Inuyasha hurt her. Instead she would blame it on Naraku. “Mom, Inuyasha is laying over there. She pointed. He’s been injured as well.” Her mom moved to go to Inuyasha, but Kagome grabbed her wrist hard. “No, don’t go near him.” Her mother looked confused, then Sesshomaru spoke up. “Do not worry Kagome. I have placed the Tetsaiga on his chest. The transformation has been reversed.”

Kagome breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you Sesshomaru... for everything.” Kagome leaned up and kissed her mate. His lips covered hers so warmly. She had just this morning thought that she would never taste those lips again. She thanked her lucky stars above that she was wrong.

It took some time to get both of them in the house. Sesshomaru instructed them to leave Inuyasha be, for now. His body needed to rest from his ordeal. Souta refused to leave him alone though, and sat under a tree nearby, waiting for him to stir.

Ms. Higurashi removed the bandages from Sesshomaru. She and Gramps took in a sharp breath as the extent of his injuries became clear. In stunned silence she treated her daughter’s ‘husband’ and re-wrapped his chest. Kagome did her best to help him into the spare bedroom downstairs, but mostly he managed on his own, too proud to allow her mother or gramps to assist him. Once he was comfortable on the bed, Kagome kissed him, then left him to rest.

Once back in the sitting room, Kagome’s mother asked her to explain everything, while she looked at her wounds. Kagome began replaying the battle with Naraku for her mom and grandfather. They both listened intently, never speaking a word. She told of Inuyasha’s transformation, and Sesshomaru showing up to change him back.

She only stopped talking while her mom removed the abominable four inch pin that was just barely poking through the skin on the backside of her leg. “OOOWWWW... that... hur...ts!”

When Kagome finally finished the tale her mother sighed deeply, “Kagome, if I had know about this kind of danger to my only daughter, well... well, I just don’t know.” She shook her head sadly. “I feel like I’ve been a terrible mother. I should never have allowed you to go back there. I shouldn’t ha...”

Kagome cut her off, “Mom, you had no choice. I had no choice. The jewel is my responsibility. For some reason I carried it inside my body, and that made me it’s keeper. This was fate, mom. You are not responsible. You did just like you should have. You worried over me and supported me, and I thank you so much for that.” Kagome leaned up and hugged her mom close.

“Ouch!” The older woman jerked back. “You have a terrible hang-nail, dear.”

Kagome frowned. “Well... ya see... there’s a little more to this whole story.” Kagome held her hands out in front of her for her mom to see.

“Oh dear Kami,” her mother said as she held Kagome’s hands in her palms studying the budding little claws.

Kagome cleared her throat, after shooting her Gramps a look for his grumbling comments about cursed demons. She looked back to her mom. “There’s more.” She pointed to her eyes, which she had, so far, been shielding from them. Her mother gasped, and put her hand to her mouth as Kagome pulled her lip up, also showing her new set of tiny fangs.

Gramps had to find a seat, because he thought for sure that if he didn’t, then he was sure to fall on to the floor. His own granddaughter had been tainted by a demon. ‘What is the world coming to?’

Kagome explained the reason’s why her feature’s had changed, as well as senses. Ms. Higurashi sat holding her hand over her gaping mouth the entire time. When Kagome finished talking, her mother finally allowed her hand to drop into her lap. She breathed in deeply, allowing the information to sink in.

“I hope that you have made the right decision dear. From what you just told me, you’ll be with Lord Sesshomaru for a very, very long time.” Ms. Higurashi then smiled and cocked her heard sideways a bit. “No matter what Kagome, we will always love you. You will always be my little girl.”

Kagome hugged her mother once again. They both cried a little, and gramps patted her shoulder on his way out of the room. Finally the two women wiped away their tears. A loud ruckus from the kitchen announced the arrival of one normal Inuyasha, accompanied by an excited Souta.

“Where’s Kagome?!” Inuyasha called.

“I’m in here Inuyasha,” Kagome called back. Soon he rushed through the house and grabbed Kagome tightly to his chest.

Inuyasha woke up afraid. When he sat up and realized where he was, he had the most ominous feeling. He knew he had transformed during the battle, but had no memory of his actions after that moment. He was so very afraid that he had killed her. Afraid? No, not afraid... Terrified. When Souta said she was fine... well he almost passed out with relief.

“Kagome.. Kagome... please forgive me. I never meant to hurt you.” Inuyasha cried.

Kagome hugged him fiercely. “Inuyasha, you baka, she sniffed, I know you couldn’t help it. That wasn’t you. I love you.”

“I love you too,” he said.

Kagome pulled back and pointed to the hallway. “Now go upstairs and bathe! You’re absolutely filthy!”

Inuyasha grumbled, but didn’t protest. There was no way he would argue with his best friend at this moment for any reason.

Once everything calmed down, Kagome went in to sit with Sesshomaru, who was peacefully resting. She dared not wake him from his slumber. His body needed the rest to regenerate. She felt like she could use a rest as well, so she climbed up beside him. Unconsciously he felt her presence. Kagome suddenly found herself pulled closely against his side. She lay her head in the crook of his arm, and enjoyed the warm feel of his body next to her. With a sigh of contentment she drifted off.
