Chapter 9: “Falling Into The Unknown”

“I was proposing. Lady Kagome and I are engaged to be married. Congratulate us.”

For a minute no one said a word. Then Inuyasha spoke through greeted teeth.

“I suppose I must congratulate you. Welcome to the family.” He sarcastically told Kagome. Kagome lowered her eyes to the floor, trying to escape his gaze. ‘What do I do now? If I deny Koga I will be nothing but a whore to Inuyasha for allowing Koga to take liberties with me. But if I don’t, I will be betrothed to Koga, and I am not sure of wanting that. I have to get away from him, from both of them. I need to think.’

“Please excuse me”, she left, passing by Inuyasha towards the door but never taking her eyes of the floor.

A feeling of protectiveness came over Inuyasha as he saw her exiting the room. ‘I wonder if she knows what kind of perverted pig her betrothed is.’ He felt compelled to ask Koga, though.

“I hope you didn’t force her to the engagement.”

“I didn’t, but what if I did?” was Koga’s defiant answer.

“You would have to answer to me. She is too young and innocent to know the kind of sick person you are, so you better treat her well. I don’t know with what kind of tricks you fooled her with, but I wont let you hurt her. Am I clear?”

‘Damn mutt!’ “Why is it you worry so much for her? Could it be that you are infatuated with her? I’m warning you, Inuyasha, she is mine. So stay away from her.” With that said he left the room, slamming the door behind him.

‘He’s right, why do I worry for her so much?’ with a sigh he changed for bed; his thoughts about a raven haired woman never leaving him.

*********

Kagome had been pacing back and forth from the minute she entered her room. ‘Oh my god! That was obviouslyhis room! And he found us there....KISSING! Calm down Kagome, why are you worrying so much about a simple kiss.......Argg, because it wasn’t just that, he told Inuyasha we were engaged.’ she sighed. That was what had really upset her. Koga had no right to make such a statement, and even less without her consent. ‘I can’t stay here, I need to think. I need to be away from Koga.’ With that decided she walked to the desk and sat down to write a letter explaining the reason of her departure, but before she even had started, one thought came clear and loud in her head, ‘KIKYO! What I am suppose to tell her? That we are running away in the middle of the night because the brother of an earl proposed to me? No, I cant’ tell her that: she will refuse to go. Alright, I’ll wait until morning, and then we will leave first thing.’
She then began writing the letter.

Dear Koga,

I am sure that I will have left by the time you are reading this letter. I’m sorry; you must be surprised about my leaving. But I need time by mysel; I don’t know if I want to marry just yet, or to be engaged for the matter. I have no idea why you told your brother that we were betrothed. The only reason I manage to conceive is that you did it to save my reputation, and I’m most grateful for that, but now I fear that I will have to be betrothed. It’s not that I’m declining your offer; it’s just that I need time to think, so please give me space.
Again, I am sorry about all this, yours,

Kagome

She re-read the letter and nodded in satisfaction. ‘I know he will come after me anyway, but at least this explains a little bit.’ She glanced at the clock. It marked 4:30 in the morning. ‘Only half hour to sunrise. I must think of something to tell Kikyo. Maybe I can say that the earl was upset with us here; no, she wouldn’t buy that. Oh I got it, I will tell her that I need to go home because I forgot something, and …and...arrgg, why can’t I think of a good reason? Maybe I should just tell her the truth. Yes, I’m going to tell her the truth.’
Kagome glanced at the clock again and noticed it was 5:15. ‘I took that long to think of a reason? Never mind, I have to focus. Alright, wake Kikyo, ask Mr. Miroku for a carriage, what else?’

She walked toward Kikyo’s room, and once she was in front of her door, she opened it with out knocking. Kikyo, much to Kagome’s shock, was spread in bed, naked. She was sleeping, letting a small snore disturb the quiet. The sheets of the bed were tangled, some around Kikyo’s body, while the rest were laying on the floor. Pillows were also at the floor, next to Kikyo’s nightgown that appeared to have a gash.

Kagome’s jaw was, to say the least, almost touching the floor. ‘OH MY GOD!!!!’ she had to hold her self before she would burst out laughing. ‘The respectful Kikyo laying in her bed, naked, her clothes discarded all over the place, this is to unreal.’ She turned around silently and closed the door behind her. Once outside, a small giggle escaped her lips. She started walking to the kitchens to find the butler, laughing the whole way. After she found Mr. Miroku and asked him for a carriage to take her and her cousin to town, she went quickly upstairs to Kikyo’s room, this time knocking first.

She heard a ruffle, and a sleepy voice that said, “What? What time it is? Aahh, 5:30?? What do you want? Who is it?”

“Kikyo, it’s me Kagome, can I come in?”

“NO! I mean, please wait until I change into a proper outfit”

‘Oh, don’t be such a moralist all of the sudden now....What a hypocrite. She lectures me about morals and being respectable? Please.’

The door opened, showing a perfectly dressed Kikyo and a tidy room.
“What is it Kagome? It is very early in the morning.”

“Yes, I’m sorry. You must have had a rough night” Kagome answered sarcastically, which went pass by the still very much sleepy Kikyo. “But we must go. The carriage is expecting us. Do you need help with your luggage?”

“No, I have had it ready since last night. Why are we leaving so early?”

“I’ll explain it to you in the carriage; let’s go.”

Once inside the carriage, Kikyo said:

“Well? Are you or not?” her voice a bit harsh.

“If am I or not what?” she asked, although she knew what Kikyo was talking about.

“Engaged”

“Yes, no…well actually I don’t know.”

“What do you mean you don’t know? Or you know or you don’t. It’s that simple.”

‘What is her problem? Why is she so irritated?’

“Not a morning person, are you? What I mean is that he said in front of the earl that we were engaged, but he never asked me if I’d marry him. So technically, I never said yes.”

“It doesn’t matter, consider yourself betrothed. If the earl knows and didn’t opposed you are engaged to Koga.”

After that, both fell into silence lost in their respective thoughts. When they arrived, Kagome realized that she had forgotten her luggage at the Hall. In her hurry of leaving and waking Kikyo, she had dressed in her ugliest brown dress. She never felt less attractive in her life. She thanked the driver, and then watched as the servafollfollowed Kikyo to her room with her luggage in hand. She knew Kikyo would go to sleep, so she decided to go to the river bank. She didn’t want to be in the house all day because she knew Koga would go to look for her after Mr. Miroku gave him the letter.

She spent the day by the river, thinking about her situation with Koga. In a few months, she would turned 18 and be granted her majority age as well as her inheritance. She wanted to be free for at least a year before getting married, and if Koga loved her, he would wait for her, and remain engaged to her for that year.
With that settled, Kagome spent the rest of her day there, enjoying her solitude until the afternoon. For a change, she decided to take another road back. There, she discovered a street full of antiques stores, with beautiful articles. She entered one, and was fascinated by the embroidery of a tapestry that was hanging at the wall. It had medieval motifs, with a princess being saved from the dragon by a knight on a white horse.
‘I wonder if it is truly from the medieval age.’
She let her eyes wonder around the store, when something bright caught her eye. It was a bronze Roman helmet. Next to it was a dagger and a shield with strange Roman designs. “All this must be from the first century!” she whispered with awe. She held her breath as she ran a hand through the helmet, a feeling of burning fire went through her hand. She looked around the store to see if anyone was there. When she was sure no one was watching her, she put the helmet on. ‘Wow, this is really heavy. Oh damn it; I forgot to take off the wig.’ She raised her hands to pull the helmet off, and found that it was stuck to her head. Feeling a little bit dizzy was not helping, nor the buzzing she kept hearing. Again, she tried pulling off the helmet, but the minute her hands raised the buzz turned into a full drum shattering noise. Her body was cold as ice, and she was trembling. Her sight was blurred, and the noise kept getting lauder and lauder, until suddenly everything went black and she fell, but she never touched the floor. She just kept falling, falling into the unknown.
