Chapter 8
“Kagome! Help!”
Kagome ran out of the hut to see a smiling Inuyasha get taken down by a small toddler. She shook her head at the sight Daitaro sitting on Inuyasha’s back in victory. Eri walked over and popped her thumb in her mouth, grabbing onto her uncle’s ear, pulling it softly. She was much more reserved then her brother, but still loved Inuyasha very much.
The last four years had gone by in a blur of diaper changing, thrown food, and Inuyasha tormenting. Her sweet twins were growing up fast and well thanks to the help of her friends. Kaede was even training Daitaro in protection spells, because he had inherited Kagome’s pure magic.
“Ok guys. It’s getting late and it’s almost time for your baths” she leveled her gaze at the twins as they gave a round of protests.
“Alright! Listen to your mother or Uncle Yasha will get you.” Inuyasha growled playfully as he got up and chased them to Kagome. They hid behind her skirt looking around at him and sticking out their tongues. “Gome? I have to help Miroku with a few things in the village, can you wait to bathe them?”
“I don’t mind taking them by myself. Plus it’s way easier to get them clean when you’re not around. They only want to play if you’re there.” Inuyasha nodded his consent and went off in search of Miroku.
Kagome slung her tattered yellow knapsack over her shoulder, picked up both of her precious children and made her way to the spring. She had just reached the edge of the water when she heard a loud grunting coming from the clearing beyond where a bear demon sat. Setting the twins down she placed herself between them and this new threat. The bear growled hungrily when he noticed the three nervously backing away and began to stalk them.
“Mama?” Eri was frightened.
“What do we have here.” The bear’s gravelly voice rang out, “looks like I will be eating well this eve.”
Continuing to back further away Kagome whispered to her children, “You know the way to the village, go get your Uncle.”
“But mama!” Daitaro grabbed her hand, “we don’t wanna go without you.”
“Please children… RUN!” Kagome screamed at them as she pushed them back towards the village. She watched them disappear and turned again to face the bear. He was getting closer, slowly she reached into her pack for the only weapon she had thought to bring, a small dagger. Kagome slashed at the bear as he neared her. The demon leapt at her and Kagome cried out as she fell to her back, loosing her grip on the knife. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a tiny figure in white come flying through the trees before the bear’s huge paw rendered her unconscious.
“Mama!” Daitaro jumped in between his mother and the huge demon. He began to glow pink and a barrier formed around his mother and him.
“You leave my mama alone!” The bear laughed at this small upstart who dared to get between him and his meal. He began to advance on the small child watching, satisfied, as the little boy began to quake with fear.
Sesshomaru had been relaxing under a tree when he heard a woman cry out. He thought nothing of it until he saw the two small children of his brother running through the woods away from the hot spring. As he watched they stopped and argued a moment, then the boy tore off, back in the direction he came from and the girl followed him at slower pace. Sesshomaru, curious, took to the air and saw a bear demon next to the unconscious priestess, Inuyasha’s son guarding her with a barrier. He landed gracefully behind the bear and gutted it before it could even turn and fight. The child dropped the barrier and fell to his knees, exhausted.
“Thank you for saving mommy.” He gasped as he curled up near Kagome.
Eri finally reached the clearing and seeing her brother collapse she ran out, small fingers beginning to glow green. A pale stranger stood over them.
“Leave them alone!” Eri yelled at him.
Sesshomaru moved his attention to the small female spitting angrily at him.
“What could you possibly do to hurt this Sesshomaru, little…..” His words stopped as a small poison whip cracked across his cheek. The clearing became deathly silent as he narrowed his eyes at her.
