Chapter Eight: I'll Let You Live

Kimi sat up and groaned, holding her head. She looked across the room at Yash, who seemed tired and a little annoyed. “What the hell is going on now, Kim?” he asked her. She smiled a little, wincing at the pain in her head and torso. When she stood and pulled the blankets away from her body, he saw that the bandages Minoru had wrapped around her thin waist had splotches of blood on the front and back, where her wounds had been. He made a face and looked into her blue eyes. It concerned him that she was in her normal form and the wounds still hadn’t healed.

He gave her a deep growl. “I don’t understand why you’re still hurt.” He reached around and grabbed the small roll of white bandages. She smiled at her mate gratefully as he handed them to her, and, together, they began to remove the old bandages to replace them with the new.

“I’m frightened,” he mumbled, his face turning a little red at the confession. Kimiko gave him a small smile. “I can understand why,” she replied. “You’ve always been so used to me being able to take care of myself. But…”

She stopped, her eyes glazing a little, and she tilted her head. “Do you remember that?” she asked.

He stopped also and thought. “Yes,” he whispered, his voice thoughtful and puzzled. “But… that didn’t happen before, did it?”

Kimi shook her head. “No,” she replied. “He’s not fucking with history in general. He’s doing it to ours also.”

As soon as the new bandages were secured, the pair headed into the rest of the bunker… to find it empty. “Huh,” Yash mumbled. “Weird.” He found a note posted to the inside of the front door, addressed to him and Kimi: “Hey, guys. Inuyasha and Miroku wanted to go out to kick some bird demon ass, and Kagome and Sango want to find out more about what happened to the world since Naraku fucked it up. Shipp and Shippo and both Kirara’s have come with us. Sue is still asleep in the basement, as are Minako and the baby. See ya later – Minoru.”

Kimi looked at Yash; their eyes met at the exact same moment. “You feel that?” he asked her. She nodded. “Let’s go find out what just came through my fucking well – and kill it.” He agreed and they suited up, jumping in the Jeep and rushing to get to the ruins of the Higurashi shrine.

When they got there, they expected some form of Naraku or one of his many cronies. But, no – they were met by a very disgruntled looking Inuyasha.

“Who the fuck are you people?” he yelled. “And where’s Kagome and the others?”

Yash and Kimi held their aim against him but exchanged looks. “What do you mean, Inuyasha?” Kimi asked him. “You know us; you and the others, including Kagome, have been staying here in the year 2256 with us for a couple weeks now. We told you the entire story.”

“No, I’ve been spending the last two weeks searching for my missing wife and friends,” he shot back, obviously pissed off and confused. “They said they were going to take something for Kaede, and then they left without me. The well got all sealed up and I couldn’t go through it until now. And they never came back.”

Both Kimi and Yash paled when they looked at each other.

Yash growled in aggravation as Kimi grabbed Inuyasha by the arm and led him to the Jeep. “I knew he was too quiet! And he didn’t curse enough! Godammit!”

“Somebody better fucking tell me what the fuck is going on right fucking now!” the real Inuyasha was screaming in the backseat.

Kimi just looked him dead in the eye. “You know about Kagome,” she stated. He blinked, looking at her. “That she’s not really a fifteen-year-old human schoolgirl from the future? That she’s really the fucking Kami of Time disguised as a woman to better help her keep other people from fucking with history?” He eyed Kimi at the point, and the two from the future could practically hear the gears turning. “You’re the real her, aren’t you?” he asked. “You’re Kimiko, the Kami that controls time.”

Kimi looked at Yash, then back at Inuyasha. She nodded.

Inuyasha looked at Yash. “And I would assume you’re my fucking older self, huh?” Yash nodded back to him by way of the rearview mirror. The real Inuyasha sat back in the faux leather seat, crossing his arms. “So, what the hell happened here?”

“Naraku destroyed my life,” Yash snapped back at him. Kimi watched her lover with concern. “And now he’s trying to destroy yours.”

“Whaddaya mean?” Inuyasha asked, glaring at his older self.

Yash looked at him very seriously. “He’s been pretending to be you for the past two weeks. He’s been fighting with me, threatening Kimiko, and having sex with Kagome.”

Kimi thought Inuyasha would literally pop when he heard this disturbing news. “WHAT?!” he yelled. “What are we waiting for? Let’s get our asses to them so I can kick his into the next life!”

They arrived at the front door of the bunker just as Minoru and the others were unloading the van… all but the fake Inuyasha. Yash pulled up, and Kimi leaped from the Jeep and took off into the bunker. Yash and the real Inuyasha jumped from the Jeep and ran over to the van. “Minoru,” Yash said when he reached his old friend’s side. “Where’s the other Inuyasha?”

The reincarnated monk, who was obviously confused by the presence of a second Inuyasha, pointed to the bunker. “He went ahead of us inside to check on Minako, Sue, and the baby.”

Yash and Inuyasha looked at each other, their faces turning white. Both hanyou men raced for the open front door; it slammed shut in their faces when they came up to it. Yash cried out and threw himself at it, trying to break it down. There was no use, he knew; he and Minoru and Suzume had designed it to be impenetrable. He peered in through the small glass window.

He saw the false Inuyasha holding Kimi by the throat from behind; his eyes had turned the same sick, dark color of Naraku’s, and Yash saw the glowing necklace laid, once again, around Kimi’s throat. Her hands had been cuffed behind her back. Yash growled when he saw Naraku/Inuyasha nuzzle his mate’s jaw and ear; the Miko shrank away from him.

“Good night, Kami of Time,” Yash saw Naraku/Inuyasha whisper into her ear, and her chocolate eyes widened and went blank as the villain ran her through with the rusted form of Yash’s prized Tetsusaiga.

“NO!” Yash didn’t realize that he had begun yelling and screaming and pounding furiously on the steel door. He stopped momentarily to look inside once again; she was still, sprawled on the floor, her hands still cuffed, the strange, glowing charm still around her neck. Dark blood pooled around her small, slight figure.

He turned right then and looked at Inuyasha and the others. “Someone help me!” he cried out, throwing himself at the door once again. “Help me, she’s dying!”

Minoru dodged his friend and took a quick look inside the window. He shook his head. “I’m sorry, my friend. I think she’s already gone.”

Kagome had gone pale where she stood beside the van. Miroku and Inuyasha, who were both looking at her, were the only ones to notice, but Miroku only thought she was upset at the thought her own reincarnation meeting its demise in front of her. Inuyasha knew the truth, and he ran to comfort his mate. Sango stepped forward. “It’ll be all right, Yash,” she murmured. “I know it was hard, looking for Kimi all those years, but she’ll be reincarnated again, I’m sure.”

Inuyasha and Kagome stared at her, knowing she only meant to be comforting. Yash turned around and glared at her. “How could you be so ignorant, Sango?” he asked hoarsely. “She’s not normal. At least,” he said, looking past her, at Kagome huddled in Inuyasha’s arms. He shook his head and took in a deep breath. “At least not in the sense you think.”

Minoru tilted his head, watching his friend. “What do you mean, Yash?” he asked.

“I’m a Kami, for Christ’s sake!” Kagome cried out. Everyone turned to look at her. “I’m the Kami of Time; my name isn’t Kagome, it never has been! It was never Kikyo, either, but that was what people of that time decided to call me. And there were so many others… others whose names I do not even recall because they were so unimportant and definitely not mine. Even Midoriko, the first human life I ever created for myself, was not my real name!” Tears had started dripping down her face, and she hugged herself close to her lover, disgusted also at the thought of what she had been doing with their enemy over the past week.

Her mate shushed her, wiping away her tears. He smiled down at her in an understanding expression, and she gave him a small, reassured smile back. He believed in her, and he still loved her.

She sighed as she began to spill the entire story. “I was created for the sole purpose of defining the history of the world, and I was sent here to make sure it was kept the way I had designed it.” She huffed a little, obviously annoyed by the next part of her tale. “The jewel was an accident; as Midoriko, I never meant to create it. A being figured out who I was and attempted to kill me.” Her eyes narrowed at the memory. “I slew him and his horde, but I had pulled on too much pure energy to keep contained within my body, so I was forced to create the jewel. For centuries, I protected it from demons, hanyou, and humans alike. My fellow Kami applauded me for my dedication, but they also wondered why I never destroyed it and moved on.” She looked at Inuyasha. “Truth was, I felt as if the jewel was important not only to maintaining history as it was, but also to creating a history for myself.”

“But why did you break it when you returned to the feudal era as Kagome?” Miroku and Minoru asked simultaneously.

“Another accident,” Kagome answered, her gaze unwavering. I meant to hit the bird demon that had begun the fly with it when my arm was knocked a little. By the wind or something else, I have no idea.”

“So you were Kikyo also?” Sango asked. Her friend nodded. “Then why were you so pissed off when Inuyasha kept running back to her? She was you, after all; it should have shown you how in love with you he was.”

Inuyasha seemed a little uneasy at Sango’s question, and Kagome sighed. “Sango, that walking, talking clay pot from hell was not me. It was not Kikyo, and it pissed me off because I had only known Inuyasha for a few weeks before we were tricked and tried to kill each other. I had to protect that damn jewel; I knew the history I had given birth to depended on it. I had a duty, and I couldn’t let my crush on a hanyou stand in the way of that.” She blushed a little and looked up into her lover’s golden eyes. “No offense.”

“None taken.”

Kagome turned back to Sango, meeting her friend’s brown eyes with her pair of blue that they had never seen before. Sango, Miroku, and Minoru gasped audibly in surprise. “My real eye color gets covered up when I take on the form of the Miko,” she told them. “Everyone always thought Miko’s were a myth until I showed up as Kagome. A Miko isn’t a powerful priestess like everyone thought. A Miko is a Kami that has momentarily taken on her human form.” She looked from the others to the bunker seriously. “A Kami can die in Miko form.”

“And you can’t in your regular form?” Minoru asked.

She stepped away from her husband. “Baby, go ahead and show them.”

He swallowed. “You know I’m not used to this yet, right?”

She just gave him a look. He sighed, drawing his Tetsusaiga from its sheath. It transformed, casting a shadow over Kagome. He pulled it back behind him, ready to swing. “Forgive me, love,” he told Kagome, his face queasy and unsure.

She nodded.

He swung at her, hitting her in the torso. There was a flash and a loud noise, and they all knew he had used the Wind Scar. The others cried out in astonishment when they saw there wasn’t a single mark on her. She had survived one of the Tetsusaiga’s most famous and powerful moves, and she wasn’t even phased or injured.

Suddenly, the door to the bunker opened, and Yash stuck his head out. “Thanks for not helping me save Kimi, guys!” he yelled, red-faced and angry. “I had to depend on the kitsune brats to sneak me inside, and Naraku’s already disappeared!” They all ran inside.

Yash sipped at his coffee as he rubbed his temples. Minoru and the others sat with him in the living room. Suzume was in the corner in a chair, nursing the new baby. Minako sat in her father’s lap, watching Shipp and Shippo have play fights and transform into strange objects for her. She clapped in amusement.

Yash smiled and leaned forward, kissing the top of her head. “Kimi’ll be back on her feet in a few days. She bled a lot as a Miko, which did a ton of damage. Any normal being would have died from it, myself and the kitsune kids here included. Thankfully, Kimi has never been normal.” His look became distant. He looked suddenly at Kagome, who rested in Inuyasha’s arms. “I have no idea what I would do if you were normal.”

Kagome smiled at him meaningfully.

“I have one question,” Inuyasha himself said. He looked at his older self. “Why did Kimi get so upset with you for having sex with Kagome? I mean, I know it was Naraku who was the one to forgive Kagome for sleeping with you, but, when I think about it, I’d have done the same thing. She slept with me in that shower; just not me, me.” He watched Yash. “So why didn’t Kimi forgive you?”

He gave a small chuckle at Inuyasha’s question. “You know the answer to that, pup,” he told him. “How would Kagome react?”

Kagome turned and looked him right in the eye. Inuyasha looked deep into those big, blue eyes, and he looked back at Yash. “She would have felt that I was still sleeping with another woman. And it wouldn’t have been the same as being intimate with her, because people change over time, and she’s not the same person she was when she was Kagome.”

Miroku and Sango stared at their hanyou friend. “Who are you,” Sango asked, “and what have you done with Inuyasha?”

Yash laughed aloud, and Minako laugh with him, although she had no idea what they were laughing about. He sat up and hugged his daughter close to him protectively. ‘I’m growing up nicely,’ he thought.
