Chapter 8
He walked into the dark apartment and looked around sullenly. It felt so empty and cold without her smile. How long had it been? Two or three weeks, maybe even a month? He wasn’t sure anymore. He shook his head and walked into the empty kitchen for a drink. Seemed that was the first thing he did now a days after work. But it was the only thing that helped with the pain. The pain he felt in his chest every time he came here. It was getter harder as the days passed but every day he forced himself to leave the distraction of his work to come to the empty apartment where the memories wasted no time invading his mind. After the first two drinks began to seep into his blood making him more relaxed he would remind himself this was for the best. It was the best for both of them.
{I think you can do much better than me
after all the lies that I made you believe}
His dulled eyes glanced at the dirty dishes in the sink that contained mostly glasses from his nightly drinks then over to the stove thinking about may be making some ramen. As they slid lazily back toward the refrigerator, they fell upon a blue apron draped over a kitchen chair. Another reminder of what he gave up making his heart pinch with pain. The hunger that had been building in his gut quickly faded as remorse gripped his senses. He picked up the bottle and walked toward his room without even turning on the lights on his way. He tossed his jacket to the floor and leaned over to unlace his work boots wishing he had someone to help him. His mind lazily ran over her face again making the ache inside pinch a little tighter. He shoved the thought away with an inward growl and finished the job by himself. He chastised his traitorous mind as he took a drink from the bottle not bothering with a glass tonight. The room felt so cold and uninviting now. But then of course it would be since this is what he chose. He looked around the room for some sort of comfort but every where he looked he would find traces of what she left behind. His minds eye could even make out where she used to throw her robe at night on the base of the bed frame making his heart pinch yet more.
{guilt kicks in and I start to see
the edge of the bed
where your nightgown used to be}
Once again he made a valiant effort to shove the thoughts from his mind as he took a long drink from the bottle. He told himself over and over that he didn’t need her. He didn’t need anyone. All he needed was time. Slowly he laid down on his pillow to relax and let the alcohol do it’s job. Sluggishly he rolled over and pulled the pillow from the other side toward his chest. Immediately he could smell the scent of her hair and his heart strained against the throbbing pain it caused. Her image appeared in front of his eyes. Even when he closed them against her, she was there with that enchanting smile and those beautifully innocent eyes. He didn’t even realize that he pulled the pillow closer to his nose as he inhaled deeply relishing her smell to sooth his aching soul as a tear slid from the corner of his eye. Images of holding her in his arms filled his mind in a fast flood of emotions overwhelming him to a point of insanity.
{I told myself I won’t miss you
but I remembered
what it feels like beside you
I really miss your hair in my face
and the way your innocence tastes}
Even so, it all came back to the same cold hard memory of that morning when he told her she should leave. It broke her heart and his but it was best. He lied when he told her he didn’t want her around anymore. But that didn’t matter. He had lied to her before. She would understand it in time. He couldn’t help to wonder how long it would be until he understood himself.
{and I think you should know this
you deserve much better than me}
His watery eyes opened and instantly fell upon the shoe box setting on the dresser next to the bed. After the last time he spoke to her, he gathered up the things she asked for and put them in the box but he couldn’t get the nerve to call her and tell her it was ready for her to pick up. He got up as he wiped the tears from his cheeks and retrieved it before returning to the bed to set down. He carefully pulled little bits of her from within imagining the times he saw her touching them. Photos, hair accessories, a couple of pieces of jewelry and some letters she received from that girly man friend of hers, Jak. For some odd reason, thinking about the flamboyant man made him smile saddly. If it hadn’t been for Jak, he wouldn’t have known where to look for her and none of this whole mess wouldn’t have started. But it didn’t make him angry because the time he spent with her would never leave his heart. She taught him so much in the short time they were together. He wouldn’t change any of it except maybe the pain he caused her.
{while lookin through your old box of notes
if found those pictures
I took that you were lookin for
if there’s one memory I don’t wanna loose
that time in the mall
you and me in the dressing room}
He picked up a picture of her as she posed at the edge of the Grand Canyon. She was leaning against a wooden safety fence with an impish look in her eyes. Her hair was blowing gently to the side giving her a wild kind of look. That night they rented a cabin and made love almost all night. It was the first time he ever felt complete and nothing else matter but her in his arms.
{I told myself I won’t miss you
but I remembered
what it feels like beside you
I really miss your hair in my face
and the way your innocence tastes
and I think you should know this
you deserve much better than me}
He laid down on his side and pulled her pillow close to his chest again. His golden eyes scanned her image in the photo over and over imprinting it permanently in his mind for all eternity. The coolness of the room flowed over him reminding him that it was still cold at night. Reflexively he pulled the comforter over him but it offered little warmth without her there to fill his soul with her sunny smile.
{the bed I’m lyin in is getting colder}
He regretted so many things from the past and now the regrets of the present haunted him too. Mostly he regretted hurting her over his own insecurities.
{wish I never would’ve said its over}
He knew he would never be able to get over her. He could admit now she was so much more then just a room mate. She had been more then that the first night he laid eyes on her but he was to wrapped up in his own insecurities to see it. He didn’t even really say goodbye to her. He was too afraid that he would never get to see her again if he did. Maybe that is why he never called her about the box.
{and I can’t pretend that I won’t think about you
when I’m older
cause we never really had our closure
this can’t be the end}
He buried his face in her pillow again letting the tears leak from his eyes. He was such a fool. All he ever wanted was the perfect life with a woman that loved him for him and when he gets it, he throws it all away for some kind of stupid past fantasy. Her scent flowed over him calming his racing heart some but the pain didn’t go away. The desire to hold her was still there.
{I really miss your hair in my face
and the way your innocence tastes
and I think you should know this
you deserve much better than me}
He knew he needed her more then air but why should she listen to him now after all the pain he put her through. She probably hated him by now. ‘But that wasn’t the way she acted on the phone. She said she missed talking to you.’ His selfish mind told him bringing some of the false hope back. Subconsciously he sniffed the pillow again. Her scent had always calmed him but at the moment it drove him crazy.
{I really miss your hair in my face
and the way your innocence tastes
and I think you should know this
you deserve much better than me}
Selfishly his aching soul grasped at the thought of calling her. It plagued his mind over and over until finally he began to sum up what he would say to get her to talk to him. He could use her stuff to see her. He would give it to her little by little and maybe by the time he got through it all he could talk her into forgiving him for his stupidity.
Even so, she had no real reason to return. What could he offer her but pain and misery?
{(and I think you should know this)
you deserve much better than me}
If he worked hard at it and really tried then maybe he would stop hurting her. He realized putting her feelings first would help. He could do it if he tried right? His lungs drew in several gulps of air as he tried to calm himself. He didn’t deserve someone like her but damn it all, he wanted her more then life itself. He needed her beside him. Quickly he picked up the phone and started to dial. Before he pressed the last two numbers he stopped. He still had to question, was it the right thing for her?
{(and I think you should know this)
you deserve much better than me}
Rebelliously his heart thumped hard at the thought. She might not want to be with him. He would have to realize now that was a possibility. It had been a few weeks since he last saw her and in that time she might have found someone else. Maybe he was wrong about her feelings toward him. After all he did cause her quite a bit of heart ache before. She might feel like he wasn’t worth her time anymore. His heart pinched as this thought took precedence in his mind. The facts were still the same. Slowly he set the phone back on the receiver with even more sadness in his heart. He laid back down curling around her pillow again letting his fears of rejection take over. Finally after several more minutes the alcohol consumption took affect and he was able to slip into complete numbing darkness.

Pain. That was the only word for what throbbed through his head right now. It pounded with a long ringing effect that was making white flashes of agony slip across his closed eyes. He groaned as he fought the urge to throw up while rolling over to his side. Hesitantly he forced his eyelids open and looked around his room it was the same as it was before he passed out. The only difference was the pain throbbing through his head. Suddenly the phone next to him rang loudly making him jump in surprise. He flinched as more pain shot through his head at his sudden movement. Slowly he reached for the phone and lifted it to his ear while rubbing his eye with his free hand. “What the fuck do you want?” He asked hoarsely not caring at the moment who it was.
“Inuyasha? Are you ok?” The last voice he thought he would hear said nervously.
“Oh, hey Kagome. Sorry about that.” He said feeling a flush of embarrassment run across his heated skin.
“It’s ok, but are you ok? You sound like you don’t feel good.” Her voice came back filling his ears with her usual worried tone. He had to smile. That was Kagome for you. She always worried about others.
“Nothing a couple of aspirin won’t take care of. I just woke up.” He chuckled back then cringed when his head throbbed with his laughter.
“Oh did I wake you? I’m sorry.” She apologized fearfully. He smirked again.
“It’s ok, I should have fell asleep anyway.” He replied.
“If it’s a bother, I can call back another time. It wasn’t all that important anyway.” She said dejectedly. He frowned thinking she felt like she wasn’t important enough to talk to him when she wanted.
“Nonsense. I’m glad you called.” He said trying to think of something to reassure her.
“Ok but since it’s this late I shouldn’t keep you up for long. You have work tomorrow.” She said dully. “Miroku told me you didn’t look too good today. I thought I would call to see how you are. Are you eating good? You get tired if you don’t eat right you know.” She said in an almost motherly voice. It touched his heart she would worry like this. But then that was another thing about Kagome. She always worried about those she cared about.
“Well not really. I don’t like my cooking and I can’t afford to go out to eat all the time.” He admitted.
“You should have said something. I could make something for you.” She said in that scolding voice again.
“But it isn’t your responsibility to take care of me anymore remember?” He scolded her this time. “It never really was.” He added before he could stop himself.
“I know.” She replied dryly. “It’s...it’s just...that it’s hard not to when I care....” She stammered sheepishly. He frowned knowing he had pushed it too far with that last comment.
“I know how you are. Hey it’s ok. It’s nice to know at least one person out there cares enough to worry.” He said quickly hoping his words repaired some of her sorrow. There was a bit of silence as each trying to think of something to say. He could almost feel that he was losing her and she would hang up soon if he didn’t say something. “”I’m glad you called.” He said quickly.
“Oh really? Why?” She asked hopefully.
“I found some of the stuff you were looking for.” He frowned remembering his earlier thoughts on the subject of her stuff.
“Of course, my stuff.” She said with disappointment making him cringe knowing he hurt her again. “I guess I should come by the shop and get it from you. Or you could give it to Miroku. He comes over quite a lot to see Sango.”
“No!” He snapped angrily. “That’s not what I meant. I’m glad because I wanted to hear your voice.” He added quickly knowing he was making her feel like he didn’t want to see her at all. “I was going to call you earlier but lost my nerve and fell asleep.” He admitted hotly not understanding why he couldn’t just say what he meant.
“It’s good to hear your voice too.” She giggled lightly making him feel a bit better. “But there was something else I needed to talk to you about. I just didn’t want to talk about it over the phone.” She admitted quietly.
“Ok well, you could come by the shop tomorrow. We can go to lunch or something.” He offered hopefully.
“I can’t tomorrow. I have an appointment that will take most the day. I was hoping I could come by the apartment to talk to you. I understand that tonight is kind of a bad time since you don’t feel well. But tomorrow would be ok if you don’t have any plans.” She said softly.
“Yeah that would be good. I’ll have something ready to eat and I promise I won’t cook it myself. I’ll do take out or something. If that’s ok with you?” He asked. This could be his only chance to get her to listen to him.
“Ok that sounds good. What time would be good for you?” She replied with a smile from his sigh of relief.
“How about 6 pm. I can’t wait to see you.” He said excitedly.
“Well you will just have to.” Kagome giggled making him laugh. “It’s good to hear you laugh. Miroku said you don’t smile much.” She added. He frowned thinking about it.
“I haven’t had much to smile about since I last saw you. I was being stupid then and I want to you know....” He started to confess but she stopped him.
“This is getting a little deep. Maybe we should wait to hash it all out until we are face to face hmmm?” She asked.
“Always being sensible.” He replied. “But you’re right. We’ll talk about it tomorrow.” He agreed
“Ok tomorrow at 6.” She said in a happy voice making him smile.
“Tomorrow at 6.” He couldn’t help the smile that formed on his lips. He hung up the phone and glanced at his alarm clock. It gave him less then 24 hours to get this apartment cleaned and ready for her but he would do it for her because he wanted her to see that he could take care of her the way she deserved. He could be the man she thought he was because out of everyone he knew, she believed in him. He wouldn’t let her down this time.
