~~~Chapter 8: Demons of the Past~~~
As soon as Kagome hung up the phone with Inuyasha the phone rang again. She eyed it suspiciously because no one had the landline number to her beach house, not even her. “Hello?”
A familiar husky voice came over the phone, sending chills down her spine. “I know your secret Kagome.”
She straightened herself up. She was positive it was just some reporter who had found where she was hiding. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, but I don’t have time for these types of games. I am not going to give you anything to print in tomorrow’s paper.”
The voice on the other end cleared his throat. “I don’t intend to write anything about you my dear.” She heard him chuckle. “No one person is intended to have the amount of power as your mother did. Unfortunately for you, you inherited it as well.”
Kagome’s throat clenched up as she realized just who it was, and she was scared to death. She didn’t understand how he found her. The only people that knew where she was were Shippou, Miroku, and Sango, and they wouldn’t tell a soul.
“What are you talking about? You’re the one who killed all of them.” She had no idea what power he was talking about, but she knew she should be terrified he knew where she was. “Please leave me alone.”
“But I can’t leave you alone my dear. You have something I want.” He said in an appalling tone that made Kagome quiver in her shoes.
“I don’t know what you think I have, but I’ll pay you to leave me alone!” Her voice trembled with fear as she spoke. “Isn’t it enough that you killed my family and got away with it!”
“So you really don’t know yet?” He sounded amused.
“What am I supposed to know? What power? I am a normal person that had to go through the tragedy of losing my fucking family to a psycho like you and that bitch accomplish of yours!” She was confused, scared and shaking like a leaf.
“I would watch what you say when you are alone my dear. You never know who might show up to say hello.” He said snidely.
“I am not your dear!” She shouted at the top of her lungs.
He ignored her outburst and continued on. “Don’t you wonder why you didn’t drown not so long ago? You were under the water for thirty minutes, I thought I had finally got you.”
Kagome gasped when she realized what he was talking about. “You sabotaged the boat! Ten people were killed in that accident!” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“Yes, worthless, all of them. But you, you my dear are worth much more to me. I would prefer it if you came to me alive, but I know you won’t, so I will obtain you in my own way, and your power.”
“What power?” She demanded to know what he was talking about.
“The power to...” He paused for a second and Kagome heard a car drive by in the background. “Well it looks like your bodyguard is finally home, and with some company. We will finish this conversation in person. Shall we not?” He laughed maliciously, hanging up the phone.
‘How can she not know of her powers yet? She was supposed to obtain her full powers at the age of 18 and she is 21 now. She should already be skilled and knowledgeable. Why would a family hide such a thing from their blood, especially when they knew they were going to die? She’s lived her whole life, unprepared, unprepared for my arrival.’
“This won’t do! This won’t do at all!” Naraku slammed his fist on the table startling Kikyo.
She strode over to him, wrapping herself around him. “What is it baby? Did she upset you? Do I have to go slit her throat for you?” She said it with such pleasure it made him smile. He had trained her well, but her power paled in comparison to Kagome’s.
The sadistic smirked quickly vanished from his face. “You will not harm her. Only I will take care of that. But there is no fun in capturing such an easy opponent. She must be coached.” Naraku thrust his fist into the table once more. “Dammit! She should have discovered her powers by now! All this fucking time wasted waiting when I should have just taken control of her learning!”
“But Naraki-pu, how were you supposed to know she’d be so ignorant to her powers?” Kikyo said seductively as she began to kiss down his neck.
Naraku pushed her off of him. “Not now! I have to think up a plan. Her power will be mine.”
Shippou walked in and Kagome ran to his side in tears. “Shippou... he’s... he’s... he’s back!”
After some consoling and a cup of hot chocolate to sooth her nerves Shippou finally calmed her down enough to talk. “Its okay Kagome, you are safe with me here. At least he doesn’t know where you live.”
She began to panic again. “But he does! I heard your car drive past when I was on the phone with him. He knows where I’m at, there’s no running now.”
Kagome glanced at the clock. “Shit! I’m supposed to meet Inuyasha in twenty minutes!” She quickly covered her mouth in disbelief that she had just admitted it.
Shippou got up and left the room and in walked Sango and Miroku. “Shippou told us what happened. We thought to leave you alone for a little bit.”
Kagome got up and prepped herself for her date with Inuyasha. “I’m sorry you guys, but I have to get ready to leave. Shippou! I need you to take me to the hotel to see Inuyasha!”
Sango rolled her eyes at the mention of his name. “Are you sure he will show tonight? He is engaged you know. He might have a change of heart.”
Kagome smiled at her friend’s snotty retort. “Sango nothing is going on, I swear. We just have a lot in common and enjoy each other’s company. It’s good to gain another friend you can trust, especially one who has gone through the same kind of pain I have.”
Sango lowered her head in memory of what happened to Kagome’s parents. “I would never wish on anyone the pain you have suffered, except for Naraku, the cause of yours.” She sighed and forced a smile. “If hanging out with this Inuyasha character eases some of that pain, I’ll stay out. But just to warn you, I warned him to keep his hands off!”
Miroku placed a hand upon Kagome’s shoulder. “I will place triple the amount of security at the set and will have a car follow you to and from the set. You will never be left alone, I promise you that.”
Kagome spun around and hugged Miroku, squeezing him tightly. “It’s good to have friends like you.” She ran into her bedroom and threw on her, casual yet sexy, slinky black dress with silver embroidered flowers all over. When she emerged from the bedroom nobody spoke. “What? Does it look bad or something?”
Sango glared at her and Miroku raised a brow, amused at what he was seeing. “Kagome Higurashi dressing in something other than sweats? Are you sure there is nothing going on between the two of you?”
Kagome bounced cheerily, preparing herself to leave. “Nope, nothing at all. So don’t worry about me. Plus Shippou will be near me the whole time.” She turned to face Shippou. “Won’t you Shippou?”
Shippou sighed. “Yeah, but not only for your physical protection, but for your heart as well. I think this Inuyasha is trouble.”
“Yup, but then again, so am I.” Kagome flashed them all a smile and picked up her purse. “All right! Let’s go!”
On her way out Kagome could have sworn she was being watched. She could feel eyes gazing upon her, but she could not identify the source. Inuyasha would know what to do. He would understand what she is going through and had every reason to want to kill that bastard as much as she did.
As her thoughts grew more and more hateful her side began to burn with a great intensity that made her collapse in pain. Sango, Miroku, and Shippou rushed to her side, but she couldn’t hear anything that they were saying to her. It was like she was in a daze. One that included an excruciating pain in her chest. Her thoughts raced as she just lied there on the pavement until they fell upon Inuyasha again. As her thoughts slowed she remembered their first encounter and then their kiss, and then slowly the pain turned to bright warmth within her.
“Check and see if she is shot!” Yelled Shippou.
“There were no shots fired dumb ass! Check her vitals!” Yelled Sango.
“She is fine, just in shock I presume. She’ll snap out of it in a minute.” Miroku said calmly as he placed her head on his lap. Suddenly her eyes snapped open, a pink light coming from her now pale pink eyes.
“What... what is going on?” Sango managed to stammer out in shock.
Kagome convulsed a few times and then the light from her eyes subsided and they returned to her normal silver orbs. She got up, fighting off the others, and walked over to the car that was waiting for her. “Shippou! Lets go!”
“Yes Kagome.” Shippou turned to the others. “I’ll let you know as soon as I find out myself. I have a feeling she doesn’t want to talk about it now.”
Sango just huffed and crossed her arms. “Just make sure she doesn’t get involved with this Inuyasha character!”
“She can do whatever she likes, whether or not we approve. She is a big girl and can handle herself.” Shippou said as he stepped into the car.
Miroku grabbed onto Sango’s shoulder and pulled her to him. “I know you don’t want her to get hurt again, but she knows better. She would never put herself into a bad situation.”
“Yeah, but you never know what kind of lies he’s fed her or what kind of trouble he might get her into. And what bothers me most is that she won’t speak to me anymore!” Sango cried on Miroku’s shoulder.
“I’m sure she has a lot on her mind right now, and she’s never been the one to share her problems until their solved anyway.” Miroku consoled his wife.
“But how can we protect her then?” Sango looked up at him with pleading eyes, needing an answer.
He smiled and brushed the tears from her cheeks. “Well, based on her performance tonight, I think she might just be able to take care of herself.”
“Do you really think so?” When he nodded she sighed. “Okay then, lets just follow them back to the hotel to make sure they get there safe, okay?” Sango pleaded.
“It’s settled then.” Miroku said as he set off to follow Shippou and Kagome.
