Ch8 Home is where my Heart lies (II)
*******
He groaned as he adjusted the straps of the pack, and shot an unhappy look to the raven-haired girl trudging next to him.
“Was it really necessary to pack all this?” Yusuke grumbled, besides the heavy book bag dangling from his shoulders, he also carried a large shopping bag, which continuously bumped into his legs.
“Don't complain Yusuke.” Kagome shot back, “I only had two bags, the rest is courtesy of my mother.” Kagome was similarly burdened, yet she held an extra smaller bag in addition to the pack and shopping bag, “You'd think I was going to another planet, instead of just the outskirts of the city.” Kagome muttered. Yusuke grunted in agreement and cussed silently as the shopping bag once again got tangled up in his legs. It was with obvious relief that the duo reached the train station that would bring them back to Genkai's temple. They climbed the stairs to their track and gratefully sank down on an empty bench as they waited for their train to arrive. Soon they became involved in a teasing banter that often caused either one or both of them to break out into hysterical laughter.
“Honest to God, the guy was convinced Kurama was a girl and wouldn't believe otherwise until Kuwabara pulled the fox's pants down.” Yusuke chuckled, “I'm not sure who was redder, Kurama or his suitor.”
Kagome gasped as she tried to breath around the laughter.
“Having fun?” The voice was slightly whiny and tinged with annoyance and something else. Yusuke stiffened immediately, and turned to face the newcomer. Kagome peered over her shoulder curiously at the brown haired girl in the navy blue school uniform. She was pretty, but the sharp look in her eyes gave her an ugly feel to her aura.
“Keiko.” Yusuke said evenly, the anger clear in his voice.
“I'm surprised to see you here Yusuke, usually you avoid the real world.” The girl, Keiko, spoke again harshly.
“I'm here with a friend Keiko.” Yusuke ground out, clenching his fists in anger. Kagome put a hand on his arm in an attempt to sooth him, and he flashed her a grateful smile. This was not lost on Keiko, who was now seething with anger.
“A friend is it?” Keiko practically snarled, “Tell me Yusuke does she know? Have you told her what kind of monster you are?”
Yusuke turned red and made as if to stand, but was stopped by Kagome, who turned and more fully faced the hurtful girl.
“If you are referring to Yusuke's heritage, then I know all about it. However, the only monster I see right now is you.”
Keiko sucked in a breath and narrowed her eyes at the girl.
“You're just like him aren't you? Another demon.” The last word was uttered with such hatred that Yusuke flinched.
“No, I am a priestess.” Kagome replied softly, not letting the girls words get to her. Keiko's eyes widened and she took a couple steps back as this information filtered through her brain. She opened her mouth to say something further, but luckily for both her and the two on the bench the train rolled in and anything that Keiko had said was lost in the roar of machinery. Quickly Kagome galvanized Yusuke into action, and with only a few prodding's managed to herd Yusuke, and all the bags, onto the train. Yusuke stood in the deserted car, and refused to move as the train slowly began to roll out of the station. Kagome took a swift look at the solitary girl standing on the empty platform, and noticed a brief look of pain flint across her eyes. She quickly turned her attention back to Yusuke, who was still standing in the middle of the car, his whole body shaking with suppressed emotions.
“Yusuke?” Kagome queried softly from her seat, not sure what was going on. Yusuke turned and Kagome drew her breath in at the amount of pain reflected in his chocolate eyes. Not saying a word, Kagome motioned for Yusuke to come and sit beside her, and when the boy reluctantly complied she wrapped her arms around him and sent out calming vibes with her aura. He instantly relaxed, and they were content to remain this way for the rest of the train ride.
As they exited the train at their stop, Yusuke turned and let out a string of expletives towards the direction they had just come from. Kagome stood by patiently, waiting for him to get it all out. Finally the teenager seemed to have run out of curses to yell, and he spun back towards the silently waiting Kagome.
“Soooo.” He let out a long breath, “You've met Keiko.” Kagome arched an eyebrow but responded in the same light tone.
“Yes, so I have.”
Yusuke sighed, gathered up the bags and started walking towards the station exit. Kagome picked up her own packages and followed, not speaking, waiting patiently for him to speak.
“She was my childhood friend, and my first love.” He said suddenly as he exited the lone building and entered the forest. Kagome remained silent as he continued.
“I thought that she was the one. I was ready to stay with her until the end.”
“You loved her.” Kagome stated softly behind him. Yusuke stopped in the middle of the path and slumped his shoulders.
“Yes.”
“What happened? If I may ask?”
Yusuke began to walk again as he spoke, eager to get back to the temple where he would have lots of things available to hit.
“She always had a problem with my fighting. Wanted me to stop, and try harder at school.”
“I can't see you as a serious student.” Kagome said her voice light with humor.
“I wasn't, never wanted to be. I liked fighting, enjoyed the rush it gave me. Keiko hated it, and when I started going off on missions, well she wasn't too fond of that either. We were working through it though. We had our problems, but we were willing to face them… for each other.” Yusuke paused and frowned as he walked, “But then I died the second time, and I couldn't come back as a human this time. Only my demon self came back, and Keiko couldn't handle that. She was scared of me, scared of what I was, and what I could do. She told me she wanted children, human children, not mine. Said she didn't know me anymore, and that I was a monster. She's dating some normal guy now, from Furinkan High.”
Kagome was silent as they continued to walk down the dark forest path, her thoughts churning over the new information.
“To love someone is to love them unconditionally, no matter what.” Kagome said out loud, causing the young man to stop and look at her strangely. Kagome continued to walk right past him, still talking, “Human, demon, or hanyou it shouldn't matter what you are. There are good and bad among every group, and it who the person is should matter more that what they are. If you really love a person then you should love everything about them. You are Yusuke, you can never change that, whether human or demon you're still you. Keiko kept on trying to make you into someone else, but that's not Yusuke, that's Keiko's Yusuke. If she really loved you, if she really cared, then she wouldn't have let something as stupid and petty as demon blood get in the way. Stay Yusuke, and find the one who will love you as such.”
Yusuke had remained silent through all of this, his respect and amazement for the girl growing with every word she said. Again they walked in silence through the forest until they finally reached the bottom of the temple stairs. Yusuke reached out and grabbed Kagome's shoulder before she started to climb the stairs. He couldn't even look at her as he asked the question that had been floating about in his mind for the past 15 minutes.
“Did you mean what you said? About being me?” He sounded so much like a lost little boy that Kagome felt herself melting.
“Of course.” She dropped her bags and moved closer to the distraught male. Placing her hand under his chin she lifted his face to her own, “Don't ever stop being Yusuke, I like you just the way you are.”
Yusuke groaned and couldn't stop himself as his arms circled around the startled priestess. She didn't resist as he lowered his lips to her own in a searing kiss.
His kiss was forceful and demanding, and Kagome couldn't help but submit to everything he asked for. She moaned softly as Yusuke swept into her mouth and began dueling with her tongue. Before Kagome could fully begin to explore the strange feelings shooting through her body Yusuke wrenched himself away from her and took in a deep shuddering breath. He stood there, his hands on her shoulders, holding her away; and stared at the ground panting for breath.
“I'm sorry. I just…” He stood and angrily ranked his hand through his hair, “Please forgive me.” And then he was gone. Kagome blinked and realization finally set in.
“Hey who's going to help me carry all my stuff?!”

(1) Engawa- the porch or veranda (right word??) that surrounds traditional Japanese houses. They often face a garden or courtyard and they offer a place to enjoy the outdoors, yet still be technically in the building. And NO, you should not wear your shoes on the Engawa or anywhere else inside private buildings. Not only is it extremely rude, it's also disgusting. I freaked out (my language partner taught me that it sounds strange) when I came to America and saw people wearing shoes indoors, I still refuse to do it, I always remove my shoes before going inside someone's house.
(2) Sake- pronounced 'sa-keh', a very potent alcoholic beverage that is very popular in Japan.
(3) No not Saito Hajime. Hajime is the command given in Kendo to begin a match or exercise. It is actually the command conjugation for the verb Hajimeru, which means to begin. Though the name and the verb sound similar they use very different kanji.
Cultural Note #1
Shrine vs. Temple
A Shrine is not a Temple and a Temple is not a Shrine. They are two completely different places.
A Shrine is a holy place of the Shinto faith and is written as jinja in Japanese. They are easily recognizable by the large red Tori or archways that are often situated at the Shrine entrance.
A Temple is a holy place of the Buddhist faith and is written as Otera in Japanese. Temples are usually larger and more ornate than Shrines. If a building has a large bell near it then you can be sure that it is a Temple, but not all Temples have them.
If you are currently learning Japanese, or have at least some knowledge of what Kanji are, then the easiest way to tell the difference between the two is the sign the designates the name of the Temple or Shrine. My language partner says she looks for the symbol for Kami, or God. If she sees that on the sign then she knows immediately that it is a Shrine. I think that's cheating a little on her part since she's supposed to be able to read all the kanji at this point, but who am I to say anything?
Ok lets come to an agreement shall we? You want me to update my stories, I want reviews. Can we see a connection? Give me reviews and I will give you chapters. 'My Light' is next on my list of stories to update and it's all ready to go, by I want some reviews. They give me a happy warm feeling and inspire me to write.
