Mass

Chapter Eight

"Are you sure you feel up to this?" Sango pulled on her boots not feeling up to it herself. She was moved by the fact that people were dying but part of her didn't care. Her and Kagome had went back home that same day and hadn't gone back to the shrine. Nor had anyone came to visit them. Her heart broke at the thought. Miroku had stayed behind at the temple. He'd seemed smitten with Yukina, he even stopped trying to feel her up. Sango would be happy for him if he found someone else.

"Can't I go?" Shippo pouted on the bed.

"No, you stay here with Kirara. People aren't use to seeing youkai in this era. Sorry." Kagome put her bow on her back. Botan had stopped by that afternoon to inform them that Hiei and the others hadn't been able to find a trace of this thing. They had agreed but only if they went alone. Botan had assured them that the guys didn't know that they were being asked to help.

"Lets go night has already fallen, lets try to find this damn thing." Sango strapped her weapons on, a good fight would be good for her temperment. Niether Kurama or Kuronue had come to see her and it hurt. Kurama she could understand but it bothered her that the other man suddenly stopped caring about her. If he cared about her it wouldn't have stopped just because Kurama came back. It made her feel like the only reason he had shown her any attention and been so sweet was because he'd been trying to bed her. Now that Kurama was back he couldn't pursue her. Her heart clenched as she thought about it.

Kagome followed Sango out after informing her mother they'd be back in a few hours. They walked down the dark street looking for any signs of activities. Kagome reached her senses out and reacted when she felt Hiei. If she had to guess she'd say he was at Genkai's along with everyone else. A sigh escaped her as they turned left at the next street.

They walked for over three hours before Kagome felt something. It was slight, not even a youkai presence just something abnormal. "This way."

Sango followed her ready for anything. They came to a graveyard and looked around. It was very large and it was dark. "This is creepy Kagome, are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm positive. It's here." She stretched her senses out, it was further in. They walked through rows of headstones. They also noticed a lot of recently buried, all the people that had died. She took out her bow and notched an arrow. Best to be prepared. "I can feel it, its around here. I just can't pin point it down for some reason."

Sango was standing next to one of the fresh graves looking around. She screamed when she felt something grab ahold of her ankle. "Get off," She kicked at the hand sticking out the ground.

Kagome felt like she was in a movie as she watched arms popping out all the fresh graves and others. "Oh fuck, I think we better run." She felt her stomach when one man popped out and the flesh was begining to peel off his face. "Nasty."

"Something is doing this." Sango kicked at the dead woman as she tried to crawl up her leg. "It has to be close." A man came running at them, she brought the weapon down cutting him in two. A feeling of guilt hit her knowing she was disrespecting the dead.

Kagome fired at the next one that charged, it purified the corpse. She watched as Sango sent the weapon out slicing through two more. "That's not working, they're getting back up." A woman's torso started moving again crawling on what was left of her.

Sango saw something move out the corner of her eye. It was headed for Kagome, she knocked her aside and brought up Hiraikotsu. Something black slammed into her sending her back, a sharp pain was felt as she landed against a headstone.

Kagome screamed when she saw her go down. She ran over and picked her up, "Sango." Her sensed told her she was in danger. The barrier went up as the mass came down over them. She could see it now, bile rose in her throat. It looked to be nothing but a large puddle of blood. It stayed on the barrier trying to eat it's way through. Her arms went around her friend holding her close. There was a large gash on the side of her head. Dread filled her, Sango was out cold and no one knew where they were.

"Hey just because we don't have a third eye doesn't mean we haven't been looking." Yusuke yelled at Hiei.

"Hn. I doubt you've been trying hard."

"You wanna take this outside?" Yusuke stood up ready for the fight. He was tired of the scowls the man was sending his way.

"As a matter of fact I do."

"Please you two this isn't helping. People are dying, we have to find this thing." Kurama looked up at the two. They'd all been searching with no luck and the death toll was rising.

"He's right." Kuronue had to agree with him, even he had decided to lend a hand.

"Maybe the reason you haven't been able to locate this thing is because it doesn't have a body." Miroku spoke up, adding his two cents finally. "The reports said the one woman saw a puddle of blood before she died."

"Fool how can a puddle kill someone?" Hiei looked at him.

"I'm sure there are ways. Maybe this thing is trying to create a body. The victims didn't have much blood left in them. If this is the case then it would need blood then eventually flesh." Miroku stopped talking when a loud ringing sound cut through.

Genkai walked away to go answer her phone. She lifted the reciever, "Yes." The others listened to her speak. "No, they aren't. I see, did they say where? How long have they been gone? Okay, I'll see what I can do."

"Who was it?" Kurama saw the worry on her face.

"That was Kagome's mother. Both girls left the house over six hours ago right after dark and haven't returned. She has no idea where they are."

"Knowing Kagome and Sango they went out on their own to find the creature." Miroku hoped they hadn't gotten into any trouble.

"Hiei can you locate them?" Kurama began to get a bad feeling.

"Of course." The jagan opened up and he didn't speak for several minutes. It closed and he swore, "She must be hiding herself, I can't locate either of them."

"No something's wrong." Yusuke spoke. "I got a bad feeling about this. Let's go." The others followed as he ran out the door. Even Miroku was behind them. Yusuke let his feeling guide him as he ran, he hoped they were okay. He got to the entrance of the cementary, "What the hell." His eyes took in all the corpses walking around.

Hiei sliced through the first one, it fell in many pieces on the ground. "Where is she?"

Yusuke looked over the graveyard and felt the tug. He took off in the direction, he knocked aside the corpses as the tried to stop him. The others stayed on his tail, he stopped when he saw the large mass. "What the hell is that thing? I can't even sense it."

"That has to be what is killing everyone." Miroku looked it over, "I'm willing to bet the girl's are under it."

"No way, that thing is trying to eat them?" Kuwabara slashed at another corpse. "Gross how many of these things are there?"

Hiei slashed at the mass, it was like slicing through blood. He felt the blade hit the barrier underneath, "She has a barrier up." It struck out at him becoming solid. It hit him in the chest, he landed on his feet.

"It can harden itself. How do we get rid of it? We have no idea how long she's had it up, it could fall any second." Kurama tried striking it, it grabbed ahold of the whip. He let it go when it made its way up fast.

"Shoot it Yurameshi." Kuwabara suggested.

"Do it and die." Hiei glared at him. "You could kill them in the process."

"Let me try," Miroku pulled out a sutra and focused, he threw it at the mass. It landed and the mass started emitting a loud noise. They watched as it began to withdraw, it quickly moved away and ran.

Kagome felt her barrier starting to slip, she was becoming tired. Sango had yet to wake up, it was starting to worry her. She finally got the wound on her head to stop bleeding but they were both covered in it. Fear filled her when something hit the barrier.

Tears slid down her face as it suddenly left, she picked her head up to first see Miroku. They'd been saved somehow, "Sango, wake up." She placed her head on top of the taijiya's and closed her eyes. The barrier fell as she passed out.

"It's down." Hiei reached down to touch Kagome's shoulders. She started to fall over and he caught her.

Kurama went to take Sango out Kagome's arms, they were both covered in her blood. "Let's get them both back quickly."
