The Better Man

Chapter Eight


Kagome looked at herself in the mirror tucking the rosary under her tshirt. It was warm enough outside for her to wear a pair of shorts. She left her hair down and slipped on a pair of sneakers. A knock sounded on the door and she heard Souta shouting. She snatched her bag and headed downstairs.

"Kagome, your date is here." Souta yelled.

"Shut up twerp." She blushed at the comment. Her eyes roamed over the embarrassed Kuwabara standing in the door. He was wearing a pair of jeans and a black tanktop, her eyes gave his chest a good look over.

"You look nice."

The compliment suprised her, "Thanks, shall we go?" He nodded and she followed him out to his car. Once again he opened the door for her. She hopped in the car, the door shut behind her. She smiled as he walked around and got in.

They rode down the road for several minutes before she decided to break the silence. "So how long have you and Yukina been together?"

"Around four years or so."

Kagome was suprised at the answer, four years was a long time. "Thats great, you two must be really close." She was suddenly filled with envy, it was nice to have someone to stay by your side. She'd always thought her and Inuyasha were close but in the end he had left her.

"Yep, she's great."

"I'm sure she is, I can't wait to meet her." Kagome smiled while looking forward. The girl had to be special to keep someone that devoted for over four years. She could see it in his face and the way he talked, the guy was crazy about her. Then again look at Keiko and Yusuke, all it took was one look to see how close they were and how much they meant to each other.

"All the guys will be there plus Keiko, so you'll have someone to talk to."

She nodded knowing that was his way of saying he'd be busy with Yukina. Not that she blamed him. He began to speak to her about school, she tried to keep interested in the conversation. She wondered if she'd be the only one there that actually didn't have a date.

She followed up the stairs, the place looked to be in a remote spot. Someone liked their privacy thats for sure. It looked like a nice place to get away from everything. Kuwabara began to sprint up the steps, in a hurry to get to his girlfriend no doubt. She slowed her pace and trailed behind him, it gave her a good view of his backside.

A sigh escaped her when he crossed the top and left her view. Looked like she was on her own, great. She continued to walk until she hit the top, a gasp escaped her. The place was crawling with youkai, more so than humans. She wasn't sure if she liked the idea of being surrounded by them. Keiko and the others would be there but uncertainty filled her.

Several of them were powerful to say the least. Two were the guys from that night, she cocked her head to the side. None of them seemed menacing, least not yet. Someone was to her left watching her, human though.

"You are safe, all of them are well behaved."

She turned to see an older lady looking at her, walking towards her. "Just enjoying the view."

Genkai looked the girl over, she appeared normal but something was off. Kurama had told her about the girl and she had to agree. She didn't appear to be anything more than an average human. It was just a nagging in the back of the mind. Just now she'd looked like she was inspecting the people yet no energy had been used. "You must be Kagome."

"Yes." Kagome looked the woman over, she didn't look hostile either. Seemed the only one that had a normal aura was Keiko among everyone there.

"Genkai, come I'll give you a tour." She turned around and felt the girl begin to follow her.

Kagome followed behind her deciding to relax a bit. She didn't think Kuwabara or Keiko would bring her someplace that was dangerous. Then again neither knew of the jewel and that she possessed it. The grounds were beautiful and serene. She took her into the main building and showed her around. There was different types of machines, she wasn't sure what they were for. Enjoyment, maybe. "Wow, thats awesome." Kagome ran over to the weapon collection the woman had on her wall.

Her eyes roamed over the many types of swords she had displayed, a few spears and daggers. She wondered where the woman had gotten all of them. Then she saw the three bows on the walls; one longer than she was tall, one like she use to use and a modern day one. "Got any arrows to go with those?"

"Yes, why?"

"Just curious, I've never seen that top one before. Where did you get it?" Kagome asked.
