CHAPTER 7
Kikyo stood with her back straight, dark eyes locked on Inuyasha and Kagome.
“Well…go on…answer her question, Inuyasha.”
“Kikyo. Please…just leave him alone.” Kagome begged.
“Be quiet!” She snapped. “The ONLY reason you are even here is because YOU are MY reincarnation.”
Kagome’s grip tightened on Inuyasha. He noticed she shivered as Kikyo moved closer to where they were standing. Kikyo looked from Kagome to Inuyasha.
“I’ll ask you again, Inuyasha, does this girl mean more to you than I do? Are you going to break YOUR promise to me?”
“Kikyo…”
“ANSWER ME…you owe me that.”
Kagome looked up at Inuyasha. She could feel his heartbeat speed up. ‘Is he afraid to tell Kikyo how he feels about me?’ She thought. Kagome felt her heart sink and her anger and pain swell like the waves crashing hard against the side of a cliff.
“Well?”
Kagome kept her eyes on Inuyasha, her heart sinking to the bottom of her stomach when she realized he did not intend to answer the question…truthfully…if at all, pushed him away from her and ran.
“KAG…”
“SIT!!!” Kagome yelled over her shoulder.
Inuyasha hit the ground with a thump, and a loud grunt. Kikyo’s eyes narrowed, and she smirked. ‘I see Kaede has provided Kagome with a means of controlling him.’ She thought.
“DAMMIT! He yelled rising to his feet. He spun around glaring at Kikyo. “What do you want from me?!” He growled.
“You know what I want.”
“I CAN’T!”
“You can’t, or won’t?” She asked.
“I can’t.” He looked at the ground.
“Why?” She asked coolly.
“I…just can’t.” He shook his head.
“I see…” She paused. “This is the second time you’ve betrayed me!”
“Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! You wanna talk about betrayal?! What about pinning me to a tree for eternity! I’d still be sealed to that goddamn tree if Kagome hadn’t released me! Death would have been kinder! And what about the attempts on Kagome’s life?!”
Kikyo’s eyes widened.
“Didn’t think I knew about that did you? I can’t understand WHY you would try to hurt someone who has done NOTHING to you. She is an ally against Naraku…speaking of Naraku…I cannot BELIEVE you would give him the fragments of the jewel!”
She started to open her mouth to speak, but he held up his hand to keep her from interrupting.
“Kagome IS my friend. I don’t care if you have a problem with that or not! I’m sorry, Kikyo. I MUST break my promise to go with you to hell,” he looked away, “I am sorry for what happened between us…I really cared for you and still do! I THOUGHT you cared for me too.” He shook his head. “But I realize, now, how mistaken I was. I am NOT responsible for what happened…I WILL make Naraku pay for what he put us through…but…Kagome needs me, and I need her.”
Kikyo avoided Inuyasha’s eyes. “You are right, Inuyasha. I have done many unforgivable things…since I returned to this…this…form” She said bitterly. “But all that I have left in me is anger, hate, and bitterness…my being seeks vengeance.” She looked at Inuyasha with pleading eyes, begging him to understand. “Kagome and I are the same, but exactly opposite. While she is filled with love…I’m filled with hate. Ironic, ne?” She smiled.
Inuyasha gave Kikyo a sad smile.
“Yes, ironic.”
She threw her arms around him, but he didn’t hold her. “Never forget…that I did love you once…”
He hugged her, he felt his eyes sting.
She pulled away, and pushed him. He could see tears in her eyes.
“GO!” She pushed him again. “GO!”
He backed away slowly, then turned on his heels and ran.
Meanwhile, Kagome ran through the forest. She was almost to the well, when she tripped. She felt her nose crack from the impact. She looked down to see that something was wrapped around her ankles…her eyes followed to where the tentacle was attached. She could have sworn her heart stopped… “Naraku?”
Kagome tried to scoot away, but she became dizzy, and felt something trickle down her forehead. She brought her hand to her forehead, and felt something warm and sticky. She looked at her hand, and saw blood. She thought she must have hit her head on a rock or something.
With a jolt she realized Naraku was looming over her. She tried to scoot away, but her vision was getting blurry and her body wouldn’t cooperate.
“Awww don’t worry little one…you are safe…for now.”
“W…wh…what do you want?” Kagome asked. Her head was pounding, and her nose was throbbing from the fracture.
“What I have ALWAYS wanted…Inuyasha’s head on a plate.” He said in a sadistic voice.
Kagome’s vision was darkening, and the last thing she remembered before losing consciousness was Naraku’s grinning with pure malice in his eyes.
Inuyasha ran as fast as he could to the well. He figured she would go home, and he’d have to persuade her to return once again. He jumped in, and out, bursting through the doors of the well house and ran to the house. He immediately jumped into the tree next to Kagome window. He slid the window open, and crawled inside. He was puzzled that Kagome wasn’t there. He could smell her, but it didn’t smell like she was there recently. He walked down the stairs, and bumped into Mrs. Higurashi.
“AAAHHHHH!”
“Sorry…Sorry! Is Kagome here?”
“Inuyasha, no honey, Kagome hasn’t come back since she left with you” She began to worry that something was wrong. “Is everything OK?” She asked.
“She must be at the village then…” He mumbled to himself.
“Inuyasha?”
“Yes. Everything is fine. I’ll have her back soon.” He ran out the front door and towards the well house. Without stopping he jumped in, and out back in the feudal era. He sped towards the village, but became even more discouraged when he didn’t smell her as he approached.
“Miroku! Sango!” He called.
The small group came out of Kaede’s hut looking concerned.
“Where’s Kagome?!”
“She was with you.” Miroku said.
“She was, but she ran off!” He panted, trying to catch his breath. “I thought she went home…but she wasn’t there, either!”
“Maybe she went to the river?” Said Shippou.
But Inuyasha wasn’t paying attention. He had just caught a whiff of something that made is worry turn to panic. “Shippou! You smell that?!”
Shippou sniffed, and his eyes widened. “Blood! Kagome’s blood!
And then they both caught a whiff that turned panic to terror, and made their blood run cold. Inuyasha and Shippou looked at each other, their eyes wide. “NARAKU!”
